25,000 umili, naserbian 2010 Balikatan: US Marine officer Big-spending Villar still fails to overhaul Aquino lead - Kiko The 2010 presidential race will not go to the first on track nor to the more moneyed––but to the pure of heart, Liberal Party stalwart Sen. Kiko Pangilinan said yesterday. “Despite being the first candidate to run in the presidential derby, and an unprecedented ad buy of over one billion pesos since November of last year, Sen. Villar continues to fall short of his ultimate objective––that of overtaking Sen. Noynoy,” he said. The last four surveys have had slightly different numbers, according to Sen. Pangilinan, with only one common thread: Sen. Noynoy consistently leads in all of them. The latest Pulse Asia Survey had Aquino leading Villar, 3629; the SWS Survey had Aquino up 36-34; the Manila Standard Survey likewise had Aquino holding on to a 36-34 lead; while the TNS Survey had Aquino enjoying a 41-30 lead. All surveys except the TNS Survey––which was conducted just before the end of January––were conducted in February. “The numbers themselves are rather inconsistent; in one survey Sen. Noy’s numbers in Mindanao are double that of Sen. Villar’s; in another, Sen. Noy’s lead in the same island is only three points. We are, however, happy to see that our people have not allowed themselves to be swayed by the deluge of Villar ads on TV.” Villar, according to figures from AGB Nielsen, has spent over P120 million from February 9 to March 2 on TV advertise-

Victor Ibrado, and Rear Admiral Ramon Espera) link arms at the opening ceremony for Balikatan 2010 at Camp Aguinaldo, Armed Forces of the Philippines headquarters on March 9, 2010. Balikatan 2010 will focus on training the armed forces of the United States and the Philippines to provide relief and assistance together, in the event of natural disasters and other crises that endanger public health and safety. Military service members of both countries will conduct free medical, dental and veterinary clinics; construct school classrooms and other community infrastructure; and engage in combined staff exercises and field training in Ilocos Sur, Cavite, and parts of Central Luzon.

Transparent, all-inclusive approach key to peace in Mindanao - Aquino Liberal Party standard bearer Noynoy Aquino said Wednesday that a transparent, all-inclusive approach is the key to sustainable and longlasting peace in Mindanao. “We have seen how the tayo-tayo, kami-kami approach of this government has been rejected by the people. It has also resulted in renewed fighting in Mindanao that has displaced thousands from their

Binay: automation no guarantee for clean election United Opposition (UNO) vice presidential candidate and Makati Mayor Jojo Binay urged the people yesterday to guard their votes on May 10, saying that computerized balloting does not guarantee a clean and honest election. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is to hold the country’s first automated polls in May under the controversial P7.4-billion contract with Smartmatic, but Binay warned the electorate that election cheats are still out there to rob them of their votes. “Marami po kasing expectations sa automation na nakakalimutan na ang automation ay para lamang po mapadali ang pagbibilang… at

hindi na tayo naghihintay ng linggo o buwan para malaman kung sino ang nanalo,” Binay told a radio interview in Iloilo, “Kaya ‘yung mga pandarayang gagawin bago bumoto… naririyan pa rin po ‘yan.” The UNO vice presidential bet said some camps would still attempt to buy votes, intimidate voters, snatch ballot boxes, bribe official watchers and even switch results using the computer to ensure the victory of their candidates. Binay said the discovery of double registration of some 200,000 names in the voters’ list in Mindanao was another testament to the lack of preparation on the part of the

AFP, local residents, US soldiers come together, build more than walls SALCEDO, Ilocos Sur - At the offskirts of a road in Barangay Atabay, several soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. Army are working together daily with the farmers to build a flood protection wall here. The soldiers working at the site are helping to build a flood protection wall that residents here say will help control water from the river during the rainy season. Philippine and U.S. soldiers have been working hard since February 14 so that they can complete it by midMarch. The task is enormous as the AFP and U.S. teams are building many four-foot by four-foot cages each day to secure the wall. But the soldiers are not the only ones who work on the wall. “The residents help out as they can,” said Spc. Albert Ericson, a carpentry and masonry specialist with 3rd Mobile Engineer Brigade, 6th Engineer Battalion, 56th Engineer Company, 1st Platoon, from Minong, Wisconsin. Samson Ellazar, a volunteer
