THE PHILIPPINE NATIONAL ANTHEM: PRODUCT OF REVOLUTION The Philippine National Anthem is a product of revolution, a response to the need of the revolutionary times that gave birth to it. And this need arose in 1898, when the revolution against Spain was in its second year and a Filipino victory was in sight.

Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo astutely recognized the need for national symbols to rally the nation against the enemy. On June 5, 1898, he commissioned Julian Felipe, a Cavite pianist and composer, to work on a march for the revolutionists. Felipe worked on the assignment for six days and on June 11, sitting in front of a piano in the Aguinaldo living room, played his music before the presidente and his lieutenants. Named by Felipe the Marcha Filipino Magdalo (after Aguinaldo’s nom de guerre and his faction in the Katipunan), the music was adopted on the spot and renamed the Marcha Nacional Filipina (Philippine National March).

The national anthem was heard publicly for the first time on June 12, 1898, when, standing on the balcony of his Kawit mansion, Aguinaldo proclaimed Asia’s first independent republic before a cheering throng. Two rallying symbols were presented to the infant nation that day. Also displayed for the first time was the national flad, unfurled to the stirring strains of the marcha nacional played by the band of San Francisco de Malabon (now Heneral Trias) whose members had learned the music the day before.

But still without words, Felipe’s music was simply a maarch.

It could not be sung. The need for lyrics was just as great as there was for the music. In December 1898, the Philippines was ceded by Spain to the United States of America in the Treaty of Paris. Having thrown off Spanish rule, the Filipino found themselves under new colonial masters, the Americans. In February of 1899, the Filipino-American War erupted.

The defiant lyrics to match the stirring strains of Felipe were supplied by Jose Palma, a 23-year-old soldier who was as adept with the pen as he was with the sword. He wrote a poem entitled “Filipinas” and this was wed to the Felipe composition. The anthem was readily taken by the young nation at war. But on March 23, 1901, the war with America ground to a halt with the capture of Aguinaldo in Palanan, Isabela.

The first half of the century were years of humiliation for the Filipinos and their anthem. The American administrators discouraged the singing of the anthem and in the 1920s, Palma’s original Spanish lyrics underwent several English and Tagalog translations. The most popular were the versions in English by Camilo Osias and M.A.L, Lane and one in Tagalog.

In 1956, a new version penned by the Surian ng Wikang Pambansa (Institute of National Language) was adopted. These PAGE 6

Night blindness, a condition characterized by poor vision at dusk or night time, is an early clinical symptom of Vitamin A deficiency. It is found to afflict women during pregnancy, especially during the last three months of the first six months after delivery among breastfeeding women. This is because of the increased requirements during these vulnerable periods.

It was found out in a study that 10 out of 100 women who are lactating at the time of the survey suffered from night blindness compared with seven out of 100 women who were pregnant at that time. It was also revealed that cases of night blindness increased as the age of the mother and the number of children increased. The number of cases, however, decreased with the educational attainment of the mother.

Likewise, the study noted the high number of night blindness among laborers and unskilled workers, about 18 out of 100, followed by the housekeepers, 16 out of 100. However, the number of cases was lower among professionals, government officials, corporate managers and those having clerical jobs at 3 out of 100.

To correct maternal night blindness during pregnancy, a new policy has been adopted by the government to provide identified cases with a low dose of Vitamin A 10,000 I.U. supplements twice a week for the entire duration of pregnancy. (E. Palafox, S & T Post/DOST, Ilocos Sur)

In preparing for breastfeeding, it is best to get the husband and relatives’ support on the decision to breastfeed, so the mother and the baby can have a healthy start.

Breastfeeding classes and other nutrition and health promotion activities can help address concerns like teaching mothers the recommended diet, correct positions of breastfeeding, right clothes to wear, what to do with inverted nipples, importance of regular check-ups in health centers or hospitals and where they can get support, among others.

Today, with a growing concern on food safety and security and the threats of natural calamities like strong typhoons and prolonged droughts, breastfeeding ensures that newborn infants get enough nourishment to grow normally and become productive citizens in the future.

Two characteristics of vegetables that have an important effect on the nutritive value are color and the part of the plant that is eaten such as leaves and stems, fruit, flowers, seeds, roots, etc.

The major nutritional contribution of vegetables are as follows: • Green leafy and yellow vegetables contain B-carotene which is converted to vitamin A for normal vision and smooth skin.

The greener or the deeper yellow color, the higher their provitamin A content. They are the most easily available and inexpensive sources of pro-vitamin A. These include the leaves of alugbati, ampalaya, kalabasa, kangkong, karot, gabi, letsugas, malunggay, mustasa, petsay, saluyot and sili.

• Vegetables contain pro-vitamin A but the green leafy and yellow ones have more pro-vitamin A than the “other vegetables” like sayote, talong, etc. Other vegetables also contain vitamins and minerals, but in smaller amounts compared to the green leafy and yellow vegetables.

• Malunggay leaves have more pro-vitamin A than petsay, kangkong, saluyot and kamote tops, and carrots than squash fruit.

• Squash, malunggay, kangkong, petsay, kamote tops, ampalaya leaves, have more pro-vitamin A than other vegetables like cabbage, okra, sayote and eggplant.

• Malunggay leaves, petsay, kangkong, camote tops are cheaper but more nutritious than cabbage.

• The leaves of malunggay, alugbati and squash are rich in Vitamin C for faster wound healing and absorption of iron, but the amount contained is not as much as that in citrus fruits like dalandan and oranges.#
