NUTRITION CORNER “Low GI” kamote, gabi, ube, good for diabetics Based on a study conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRIDOST), starchy root crops such as sweet potato, cassava, taro and yam locally known as kamote, kamoteng kahoy, gabi, and ube, were found to be low glycemic index (GI) foods equivalent to less than or equal to 55.

GI is a classification of food based on the blood glucose response to a food relative to a standard glucose solution. Low glycemic foods control the release of glucose into our bloodstreams at a steady and sustained rate, keeping our body’s metabolic processes and energy levels balanced.

People with low glycemic diets or eat low glycemic foods are said to have lower risk of getting coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes. For those already suffering from diabetes, low GI foods can help in the proper control and management of diabetes mellitus.

These foods also improve physical endurance, as blood glucose levels are kept at a moderate level, instead of dipping drastically due to sudden insulin production, for a more sustained period of time.

Moreover, they help control glucose levels in the blood, lower and control triglyceride and lipid levels in the blood, and help with weight loss and maintenance of healthy weight.

Starchy roots and tubers contain other nutrients, like protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C. Study reveals Filipino health supplement users increased The use of health supplements among adults in Metro Manila increased from 1998 to 2008, according to a study done by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST).

The study showed that in 2008, 9 out of 10 adults were aware of health supplements, compared with only 4 out 10 in 1998. Among those who were aware of health supplements in 2008, 5 out of 10 actually used them. However, in 1998, there were only 3 out 10 health supplement users of those who were aware.

Among the regular users of health supplements, 64.7 percent consumed the supplements with single nutrient category only, e.g. vitamin C. Only 60.4 percent used those with combined nutrients such as multivitamins.

Herbal supplements were consumed by 51.4 percent of regular users and 48.6 percent of sporadic users of supplements.

The reasons for using supplements varied. Some were based on perceptions that those supplements make one healthy; give energy; and help perform better in school and work and that they are not getting enough vitamins from the diet. Others said that they take these because supplements are doctor-recommended; someone influenced them or just for curiosity's sake.

Majority of those included in the study agreed to health belief statements on what health supplements can particularly do to a person, it is needed if a person feels tired and run-down and makes one feel better physically. However, they disagreed that one can skip meals and just take health supplements.

In both 1998 and 2008 study years, there was a strong belief on the positive effects of health supplements.

The FNRI-DOST reminds the public that while dietary supplements may help increase nutrient intake and make one feel healthier, eating a variety and well-balance food is still the best way to meet the recommended energy and nutrient intakes of an individual.

Yacon, highly nutritious functional food Yacon, known scientifically as Smallanthus sonchifolius, is a rootcrop that has gained attention for its promising human health benefits, because of its inherent fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) content.

FOS is a non-digestible form of carbohydrates that helps lower blood sugar levels and improves the health of the intestines. Beneficial bacteria in the colon are stimulated and their promotion may help inhibit the actions of some carcinogenic compounds.

Thus, yacon is believed to have health-promoting potentials in regulating blood sugar levels especially among diabetics and for healthy gastrointestinal system.

Yacon is a highly nutritious functional food. Thus, its exploration as potential use in the Filipino diet through development of healthy recipes may play a role in micronutrient deficiency alleviation.

3. Sometime on July 2002, defendant who was then a friend and business associate of the plaintiffs, approached the latter for a loan of P250,000. Being in the business for quite sometime and considering their friendship, plaintiffs, readily gave her the amount trusting that she could settle her obligation. In turn, defendant

gave them a post dated Prudential Bank Check No. 0310566 dated 26 July 2002 in the amount of P250,000.00 payable to cash as security for the borrowed amount.

4. When the check issued by defendant is about to become due, she asked for extension of payment and requested that they hold in abeyance the deposit the check for some time for her to settle her loan to the plaintiffs which the latter acceded.

5. Numerous requests for extension of payment were made by the defendant to the plaintiffs wherein the latter granted, until after the lapse of one year when the plaintiffs felt that they were given the round around by the defendant.

6. Hence, they presented for payment the said check but the same was dishonored for the reason “Account Closed”. A copy of the said dishonored check is attached and made as an integral part hereof as Annex “A”.

7. That numerous oral as well as written demands were made against the defendant for her to replace the dishonored check with cash but to no avail. The latest written demand made by the plaintiffs against said defendant was the Letter dated 13 January 2010, herein attached and made as integral part hereof as Annex “B”. Until this date, the said check was not replaced with cash by the defendant.

8. Clearly, defendant acted in gross and evident bad faith in unjustly and unlawfully refusing to satisfy plaintiffs’ valid and demandable claim. Defendant is clearly evading her obligations to the plaintiffs.

9. That due to the unjust and unlawful act of the defendant to comply with the said demands, plaintiff was compelled to file the instant proceedings, hire the services of counsel for a fee and to incur litigation expenses, and other related costs in the enforcement of their claim against herein defendant.

10. Accordingly, defendant should be made to pay plaintiffs the amount of P250,000.00 and the accruing interests at the legal rate of twelve percent (12%) per annum counted from the date of filing of this case until its termination.

11. As a consequence of the aforesaid unjustified, deliberate and malicious acts of defendant, plaintiffs suffered sleepless nights, anxiety, and restlessness which injuriously affected their mental and physical well being. Accordingly, defendant should be made to pay plaintiff the amount of not less than P10,000.00 as and by way of moral damages.

12. Plaintiffs already made several demands on defendant to make full payment of her outstanding accountability, but defendant in evident bad faith, refused and continuously refuses to comply with plaintiffs’ valid, just and demandable claim.

Thus, by way of example or correction for the public good and to deter others in committing the aforesaid acts, defendant should be made to pay exemplary damages to plaintiff the amount of not less than P5,000.00.

12. As a result of the defendant’s unjust and unlawful refusal to satisfy plaintiffs’ valid and just claims and in order to protect Plaintiff’s rights and interests against the illegal and wrongful acts or omissions of defendant, plaintiff was constrained and compelled to engage the services of the undersigned counsel and pay attorney’s fees in the amount of P30,000.00, as well as incur litigation expenses as may be proved during trial, for which defendants should be made liable.

Pacalso arrested Leonardo Banaag Jr. y Velasco @ Jake Banaag, of legal age and a resident of Barangay 5, Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, at the Summer Place Hotel, Baguio City before dawn of September 23, 2010.

Banaag was tagged as the gunman in the killing of Jovelito Agustin, DZJC Aksyon Radyo broadcaster based in Laoag City, who was shot dead on his

way home together with his nephew Joseph Agustin on the night of June 15, 2010. The suspect is listed among Ilocos Norte’s Top 10 Most Wanted Persons (MWP).

Banaag was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by Honorable Judge Charles Aguilar of Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 12 in Laoag City for the crimes of murder and attempted murder; and a warrant of arrest issued

by Judge Francisco Quilala of RTC Branch 14 in the same city for illegal recruitment.

“We will remain committed in our drive to neutralize other MWPs. We shall continue tapping the help of the community to monitor their whereabouts to bring them to the law and give justice to the victims,” Mabutas said.

NFA continues to sell rice at P25/kilo SAN JUAN, La Union – With the onset of the lean months when the price of rice is expected to rise, the National Food Authority regional office here has guaranteed the availability of affordable rice sold in its accredited retail outlets.

“NFA rice is still available at P25.00 per kilogram. The high volume of rice in the market brought about by the agency’s stock positioning and the flooding of rice in the market has created an ample supply and provided affordable rice that is available in consumer markets,” NFA Region I Director Atty. Efren J. Sabong said.

Sabong said the early stock positioning and the procured palay from the farmers during the summer cropping season are keeping the price of the staple at bay even during the lean months from July to September.

Sabong said that at present, the NFA in the region has a total of 3.267 million bags of rice in its warehouses distributed across the region including the provinces of Abra and Benguet. With a daily consumption requirement of 53,620 bags, Sabong said that this inventory is good for 61 days or until the 1st quarter of the coming year based on daily average sales.

NFA rice is sold through the

agency’s regular outlets and the Bigasan sa Barangay Outlets spread across the region. To date, NFA has accomplished around 62 per cent of its distribution target as it continues to distribute affordable rice to its 1,709 accredited outlets.

Meanwhile, the agency is in full preparation for the coming procurement season for the year’s main cropping season which usually starts in October.

Sabong said that the agency will continue to buy palay from farmers, either individual or cooperatives, at the government support price of P17.00 per kilogram.

He however, cautioned farmers to sell only dry and clean palay so that they can avail of the government support price of the cereal.

“When we say clean and dry, the moisture content of the palay should be at 14 percent”, Sabong said. “If the palay sold to us has higher moisture content than 14 percent, naturally, the buying price will correspondingly decrease,” he added.

The agency’s procurement program not only boosted the buffer stock of the agency but also serves as a ready market for the harvests of the farmers offering them a higher buying price resulting in a higher return of investment for their produce.#
