PRO1 to deploy 2700 cops in barangay, SK polls CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO – The Police Regional Police 1 (PRO1) will deploy more than 2,700 policemen in 2,635 polling centers in the four provinces of Region 1 to ensure clean and orderly barangay and sangguniang kabataan (SK) elections on October 25.

NUTRITION CORNER RP nutritional guidelines evaluated The Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos are actually primary recommendations of messages aimed to promote good health through proper nutrition. One of the messages is to “eat a variety of foods everyday.”

A study on the knowledge, attitude and practices on the five basic and refuted messages of the 1990 edition of the Philippine Nutrition Guidelines (PNG) showed generally positive attitudes towards the concept of eating variety of foods and other related messages.

In terms of practice, the mothers specifically were observed to be particular about practical tips in meal planning and management. They put emphasis on food combinations in their daily meals, the most common being rice, “ulam” (usually fish) and vegetables. They identified family budgets, however, as a majority determinant of foods served on the table.

Children believed that fruits and vegetables are essential to their daily meals, though they do not eat them regularly. Likewise, they perceived that milk is good for the health. However, milk drinking was not a popular practice among them.

The overall results of the study pointed to the need for more meaningful and sustainable nutrition education interventions. For one, a vigorous and consistent nutrition education campaign may be launched. Emphasis should be done on the following: clarification of the functions of foods; nutritional problems, causes and effects; food labeling; and the “Sangkap Pinoy” thrusts.

Classroom lectures and experiences, likewise, remain desirable interventions to promote good nutrition and the practice of certain habits (e.g. brushing the teeth after eating) among children. Moreover, counseling in mothers’ classes may have to be intensified to effect desired attitude to some messages. (S & T POST, STII-DOST/DOST, Ilocos Sur)

The other 3 Cs of food safety Cooking Food poisoning is caused by harmful bacteria such as salmonella and campylobacter.

Food can look perfectly normal but still contain harmful bacteria.

The bacteria are found naturally on raw food and usually they are killed by proper cooking. To be sure that foods are properly cooked, use a cooking thermometer.

Chilling If we keep food in a fridge (or even a freezer) it will slow the bacteria down — but it won't kill them, they are still there — however it does mean we can keep food safe for a few days rather than just a few hours. A freezer is cold and the water is frozen - so bacteria can't grow at all, but they are still alive and will start to grow again when the food defrosts.

Cross Contamination Cooking will kill bacteria but live bacteria may be left on the surface where the raw food was prepared. These bacteria can then be transferred onto cooked foods if they are prepared on the same surface — this is known as cross contamination.

People can also carry and spread bacteria around which is why hand washing is so important especially after touching anything which may have put bacteria onto them such as going to the toilet, peeling potatoes, patting the dog or even smoking.#

10 tips to control body weight Having a normal body weight is a sign of good health and good nutrition. Here are some tips to control body weight.

1. Set realistic goals. Don't set yourself up for failure. Break your efforts into manageable steps. Concentrate on changing habits rather than on reducing pounds.

2. Follow a sensible eating plan. Don't succumb to the latest diet miracle plan. There is nothing magical about weight control.

3. Get a move on. Don't live by food alone. Get enough exercise to improve health and maintain healthy weight. Adults should engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day to maintain a healthy weight.

4. Expect slow progress. Don't lose patience. The safest and longest-lasting weight loss is achieved gradually. Gradual weight loss allows your body to adjust physically and mentally to the new you.

5. Fight boredom with variety. Don't eat the same foods every day. Go for flavor with spices rather than fat.

6. Remember: There are no forbidden foods. Don't classify foods as good and bad. Allow all foods on your OK list. Just remember, the key words are moderation and variety.

7. Recognize emotional triggers. Don't ignore the stresses that push your buttons and make you want to find solace in food. Once you recognize and accept these triggers, find nonfood ways to sooth your emotions. A brisk walk or bubble bath can do wonders for frazzled nerves.

8. Celebrate! But don't make food the reward. Plan rewards for weight maintenance as well as weight loss.

9. Commit to yourself - don't diet for approval. Dieting to please someone else sets you up for failure, especially when their applause isn't as loud as you'd hoped.

10. Everything wonderful about you exists no matter what size you are. While a diet can improve your health and appearance, it won't transform the circumstances of your life.
