Senate President Juan Ponce Ernile said yesterday that groups pressing for the election of the new Senate chief ahead of the May 10 polls want to gain control of the Senate when it sits together with the House of Representatives as the National Board of Canvassers. The veteran legislator explained that those seeking to unseat him from the Senate presidency are dead set to install their own people in the national canvassing board and could be responsible for unfounded talks about possible failure of elections and a government takeover by a military junta if the country’s first automated polls fail. “Gusto nilang makontrol ang proseso sa canvassing ng boto para sa presidente at bise

Binay tops VP race in NCR, jumps ahead of rivals by 12 percent United Opposition (UNO) vice presidential candidate Jejomar C. Binay has taken a big 12-point leap over his rivals in the National Capital Region (NCR) in the latest survey, edging out previous front runner Mar Roxas. Conducted between April 4 and 6, the survey showed Binay leading in the NCR with 39 percent of respondents, a big 12 percent jump over Roxas of the Liberal Party (LP) and Nacionalista Party (NP) aspirant Sen. Loren Legarda. Significantly, the survey conducted by former Social Weather Stations (SWS) pollster Pedro Laylo Jr. and published in the Manila Standard, indicated that Binay was taking voters away from
both Roxas and Legarda since his gain came when the two contenders lost 7 percentage points each. Binay’s performance is significant since the NCR is the barometer of the national political mood and registers one of the highest rates of voter participation during presidential and vice presidential elections. NCR results also a guide to the choices of voters in the Lucena-Lingayen Corridor (LLC), which accounts for 40 percent of all voters in the country. Binay may still win additional votes since the undecided voters jumped from 4 percent to 11 percent, a sizable
