To quote: The Philippines may be just about to rudely shove Thailand off the ‘best cheap beaches’ perch it’s occupied for the best part of two decades. For those who desire nothing more than to find great, undiscovered beaches, surf the odd wave and eat unique, distinctive food for under US$20 a day, the Philippines has the edge.

I agree that there are lots of beautiful places to see in the Philippines, and not just the beaches, many of which are still undiscovered.

Up north in the Cordillera, for example, there are spectacular mountain views for those who like to go hiking.

And the northwestern coast of Luzon, from Pangasinan, to La Union, all of Ilocos (Sur and Norte), all the way to the northernmost tip of Cagayan, are dotted with beaches, eating places, baroque churches, bahay-na-bato,

Malaysia via RORO, bus and air. That’s definitely going into my future travel plans!

Our country is an amazing travel destination. But we need to improve many of our supporting services in order to attract more visitors. We also need to plan ahead to protect our resources before the influx of tourists.

First is transportation. I love how Cebu Pacific has given us an affordable way to travel by air across the country.

Perhaps they can do better by offering a discounted fare package, an open ticket for a given number of destinations and valid for 1 year for example. They can create a package that allows surfing enthusiasts to travel from one beach in Luzon to other beaches in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Perhaps our bus companies can follow the same open ticket scheme. One ticket going to Ilocos Norte, where a passenger can get off or on as many times as he wants in any town along the route. I

Money from overseas saves PHL’s agri sector, rural areas from slump

By JEREMAIAH M. OPINIANO Institute for Migration and Development Issues (IMDI) WHAT have been filling the needs of whatever yields remain for agriculture-dependent rural Philippines come from the sea.

As agriculture officials just announced the lowest growth rate for the entire agriculture sector in nine years at 0.12 percent, remittances from overseas Filipinos continued to rise albeit slowly.

But there’s a bigger story, says a policy brief by the nonprofit Institute for Migration and Development Issues (IMDI): place becomes a livelihood, and Filipinos in overseas countries —though not farmers— have been plowing hard-earned incomes for families and even for their rural birthplaces.

This does not come as a surprise, says the Institute’s paper titled Rural Folk: Hard Up, So Some Leave, written by Ma. Cristina Gregorio and Jeremaiah Opiniano. Two-thirds of overseas Filipinos —either contract workers, permanent residents or irregular migrants— come from rural Philippines, areas largely disregarded as hubs of hope and development.

However, the Institute wrote that what seems to be happening is that overseas migration —a “new rurality,” authors say— “has made up for Philippine rural areas’ many shortcomings, even if not many residents from the countryside can afford to migrate overseas”.

For example, using estimates on incomes by overseas migrant families from government’s 2006 income and expenditures survey, 60 of 77 provinces had more overseas remittance incomes compared to the total incomes of provincial local

governments (the latter coming from the Bureau of Local Government Finance).

The income gap, which IMDI refers to as “an income buffer for rural areas,” is mindboggling: P348.524 billion of migrant family incomes versus P50.482 billion for incomes by provincial LGUs in 2006.

Data from the Institute’s policy brief also reveal: ·That the growth rate of the overseas exodus of permanent and temporary migrants is better than the agricultural sector’s performance; and ·That the P348.524 billion of incomes by migrant families in 2006 are at least twice more than all the loans handed out for agriculture and fishing (P93.228 billion); However, the Institute wrote that since developed rural regions —especially those near Metro Manila— had more overseas migrants and more overseas remittances, overseas migration’s benefits have largely eased out poorer regions.

Rural regions with high underemployment and poverty incidence rates got lower money from abroad, government data which IMDI processed find.

And since underemployment indicates low-paying, low quality jobs, the situation entraps many rural folk into poverty and makes these people unable to migrate overseas.

NUTRITION CORNER Parents have positive influence on kid’s nutrition What's the best way to encourage your child to eat a healthy diet? A new study from researchers at the US Children's Nutrition Research Center says that when parents eat diets rich in fruits and vegetables, their daughters are more likely to eat healthily, too.

In this study, researchers evaluated the eating habits of almost 200 parents and their 5-year-old daughters. Parents reported how many fruits and vegetables they ate, and the girl’s nutritional intake of fruits, vegetables, nutrients and fat was also recorded.

The results showed that parents who ate lots of fruits and vegetables were likely to have daughters who ate those foods, too. Girls who ate more fruits and vegetables had higher intakes of vitamins and minerals and ate less fat. In contrast parents who consumed fewer fruits and vegetables had daughters who consumed fewer fruits and vegetables.

If you're interested in helping your child eat a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low in fat, the answer is simple: do it yourself. Try incorporating healthy foods at family mealtimes where everyone is eating the same meal. If you go out to a restaurant, demonstrate to your child that a baked potato topped with broccoli is a healthier choice than French fries. And when you pack lunches for school and work, stash an apple and carrot sticks in both adult’s and kid’s bags.#

Tea reduces abdominal fat Dr. Demetria Bongga of the University of the Philippines presented studies about the relationship of tea and energy expenditure.

Although there are dissimilar results from the studies, it could be summarized that tea catechin, together with exercise, can reduce the abdominal fat due to the stimulation of the whole body metabolism, making it significant in weight management.

However, caffeine may counteract the health beneficial effects of green tea.

For more practical applications, Dr. Jane Rycroft, Category Nutritionist of Unilever, pointed out that the milk in milk-tea mix shouldn’t affect the amount of antioxidants the tea naturally has, Rycroft also said that by soaking the tea bag in a much longer time than what is suggested in the labels can bring out more antioxidants to the water.

Among the many health benefits of tea inctude setting a positive mood, giving pleasure and stimulating the senses, reducing the risk of heart diseases and body fat.

However, the antioxidant-nutrient relationship is still in question. True enough, the science of tea is but an inception and needs further research to strengthen and validate its health benefits.

Will drinking water help me lose weight?

It's possible that drinking more water will help with weight loss, especially if you replace sweetened high-calorie beverages with plain or carbonated water. That is, of course, as long as you don't add other high-calorie foods to your diet.

Population studies suggest that people who drink more water tend to consume fewer calories. That doesn't mean drinking water directly causes you to lose weight, although some experts believe water consumption may affect metabolism. It's possible that people who drink more water may also be more healthconscious in general, so the water itself could have nothing to do physiologically with the weight loss.

However, drinking water before a meal may help you reduce the volume of food you eat during that meal -- at least if you're middle age or older; studies don't indicate that young people who drink water before a meal tend to eat less.

There are other non-calorie options other than plain water - you can also drink coffee, tea or herbal tea, but remember that adding milk, cream or sugar will add calories. There are also many diet beverages available that are made with non-nutritive sweeteners.

Region I police undergo back-to-basics training SAN FERNANDO CITY – Sixty personnel of the police regional office here underwent back-to-the-basic training in line with the thrust of the chief of the Philippine National Police.

The first batch, composed of 40 personnel from the San Fernando City Police Station and 20 from the Agoo Municipal Police Station, started their training on January 11 in their respective police station, simultaneous with other police stations nationwide.

The seven-day training, is in line with the pronouncement of PNP Director General Raul M. Bacalzo to “train PNP personnel on the basic skills of a police officer.”

Police Chief Superintendent

Franklin JB Bucayu, PRO1 regional director, reiterated this thrust of the PNP leadership at the start of the training of the said police personnel.

“We will train and re-train our personnel to do his basic job with competence. At the same time, we will intensify training on basic capabilities like investigation, proper firstresponder actions and procedures, crime scene preservation and management, case build-up, proper use of firearms, arrest and handcuffing techniques, and the like,” Bucayu said.

Bucayu said the back-tobasics training is a continuing activity and that other police stations will soon conduct the training for their respective personnel.#
