Reflections The two disciples on the road to Emmaus were privileged to walk with the Lord Jesus and experience His wisdom, compassion and mercy. They got to know Him through the breaking of the bread. Once they had experienced the powerful presence of the Lord at the table in Emmaus they could hardly contain themselves. They ran back to Jerusalem to tell the apostles what they had seen and heard. We, like them, are given a tremendous gift when we experience the real and substantial presence of the Lord in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. In that powerful sacrament, Jesus gives us everything that He can possibly give, his Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. Do not our hearts burn within us as we draw close to Jesus in Holy Communion? May we remember that the gift of the Eucharist is given to us as stewards. We are to pass on to others the Lord whom we receive by bringing to the world His love, compassion and mercy. EMBRACING NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN TOBACCO FARMING By Mancielito S. Tacadena Tobacco produced by the farmers in San Juan, Ilocos Sur is regarded as a beautiful lady. Because of the good quality of the leaves produced in this town, many tobacco traders and cigarette manufacturing companies wanted to buy their tobacco with attractive price. According to Jose Taclas, Tobacco Production and Regulation Officer III of National Tobacco Administration based in this town, tobacco leaves produced here in 1980’s was inferior compared to the leaves produced in the other provinces that time. It is because the farmers are using the conventional way of planting tobacco. The National Tobacco Administration then introduced the contract growing using the new technologies in 1989. At first, the farmers were reluctant to adopt the methods and advices of NTA technicians who approached them. They didn’t want to follow the proper fertilization, distance of planting and curing of the leaves. But with the agency’s
guidance, they were able to discipline the farmers to use and follow the instructions of their technicians. By 1992, the technologies were totally accepted in San Juan. Then NTA launched another technology- the topped tobacco. With this technology, the flower of the tobacco plant will be cut leaving only 12-14 leaves per plant. It draws strong resistance from farmers again because they are afraid that if they follow, their yield will decrease. Not until the farmers became witnesses to the turnout of the 15 hectare tobacco trimmed in Brgy. Barbar. To further explain the contract growing, Taclas said private companies, farmers and NTA enter into a Memorandum of Agreement every tobacco season.
