VOLUME OF AN OBJECT
THE THREE R’s
The objects around you are made of many different materials.
PLASTIC
Chairs, tables, buckets and bottles are made of plastic.
METAL
Spoons, forks, knives and keys are made of metal.
WOOD
Furniture is made of wood.
GLASS
Jars and cups are made of glass.
LEATHER
Hand bags and shoes are made of leather.
COTTON
T-shirts are made of cotton.
PAPER
Books and bags are made of paper.
CLAY
Pots and money boxes are made of clay.
WOOL
Scarfs, hats and gloves are made of wool.
WHERE DO MATERIALS COME FROM?
NATURAL MATERIALS
MAN-MADE MATERIALS
NATURAL MATERIALS
They come directly from plants, animals or the ground.
STONE
WOOL
CLAY
comes from the nature
comes from the sheep
comes from the sand
LEATHER
COTTON
WOOD
comes from an animal skin
comes from the cotton plant
comes from the tree
COAL
IRON
RUBBER
comes from the coal mine
comes from the iron mine
comes from the tree
MAN-MADE MATERIALS
They are obtained from natural materials through chemical processes.
PLASTIC
GLASS
STEEL
PAPER
PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS Materials have different properties. We can choose the best material to make different objects, depending on its properties.
SOFT
Paper, cotton and fabric are soft. They can be easily deformed.
HARD
Clay and wood are hard. We can´t cut them easily.
SMOOTH
A smooth surface is something that is perfectly regular.
FLEXIBLE
ROUGH
ELASTIC
TRANSPARENT
Leather and paper are flexible. They can bend without breaking.
A rough surface is something with irregularities.
A rubber band is elastic. It can stretch and return to its original shape.
Glass is transparent. We can see through it.
WEIGHT OF AN OBJECT All objects and materials have weight and occupy space. The weight of an object depends on its size and on its material.
A lorry is heavier than a bicycle because it is bigger.
A metal box is heavier than a paper box.
We use scales to weight objects.
VOLUME OF AN OBJECT Volume is the space an object occupies. All objects have volume. For example, a car occupies lots of space and a crayon occupies little space.
DOES IT FLOAT OR SINK? Some objects float and some objects sink in water..
REUSE
RECYCLE
REDUCE
They help us take care of the Earth and its limited resources.
RECYCLE
PAPER
PLASTIC
GLASS
REDUCING what we use
REUSING things twice or many times
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT IN THIS LESSON?
Let’s talk about this picture.
