ell, I can hardly believe another month has passed since the last issue. Where does time go in the wedding world?! If the big day feels like it’s approaching at a rate of knots, fear not – we have some great features this issue to help you. From the early stages right through to the finishing details, make sure you read our fabulous planning tricks (page 85) to ensure you get your dream day without overspending. I’m also loving our dress feature this month, featuring some gorgeous new styles (page 15) and the beautiful 1920’s theme full of Art Deco details (page 48). We have five gorgeous real weddings this month, too, each very different from one another and filled with personal touches (from page 60). NOT ‘QUITE’ WHAT I ORDERED HERE ARE TWO EXAMPLES OF DRESSES BRIDES THOUGHT THEY WERE BUYING (LEFT) AND WHAT THEY ACTUALLY GOT ON THE RIGHT
f something sounds too good to be true, it almost always is. Why would a company sell a £1,500 wedding dress for a mere £100 – sense should tell you there’s got to be a catch. Would you buy a car without driving it? Or a pair of shoes without trying them on? Of course not… after all, your are a canny shopper who knows just what she wants. So why do some of us get caught up in the planning frenzy and fall for the wedding dress scam?
Real stories... Real bride Janey said she got carried away when she saw exactly what she was looking for when browsing ‘cheap’ wedding dress options online. “There it was – my dream dress – a big-skirted ballgown with a sparkling bodice. Every inch the princess number. The price tag was amazing, just £150 and the model was beautiful, there was nothing to question.” What Janey didn’t know was that counterfeit factories get their hands on genuine pictures
ALLURE BRIDALS ALLURE BRIDALS
A GREAT EXPERIENCE YOUR DRESS SHOPPING EXPERIENCE IS SUCH A SPECIAL PART OF THE PLANNING PROCESS, WHEN DONE PROPERLY
HEARTBROKEN BRIDES ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF COUNTERFEIT DRESSES THAT LOOK NOTHING LIKE THE ORIGINAL
of genuine dresses, photoshop out the background, change the model’s head and produce an image where only the dress is the real thing. Sadly, however, it is not the dress you’ll be getting if, like Janey, you are tempted to part with your money. “I couldn’t believe it,” she says. “Somewhere in my mind was the vision of a big box being delivered and layers of tissue paper lovingly wrapped around my dress. What I got was a small package held together with sticky tape, and something cheap and nasty folded and refolded to cram it in. The fabric was limp and with a weird-looking sheen. There was no underskirt, and the beaded top – so lovely in the photograph – had a few sequins scattered here and there.
Cried? I nearly died! Then when I checked, the website was no longer there. So I binned my moment of madness and started the search going the traditional route, through a local bridal boutique. In the end, I found what I wanted, but boy, did the experience teach me a thing or two.” How to get savvy So how do you know if the dress you spotted online is worth drooling over and sourcing? Suren Ter Saakov of Counterfeit Technology, which works on behalf of manufacturers and designers to find images of theirs that have been used illegally, has given us a few basic tips... Firstly, of course, is the price. Bargain basement? Highly suspicious.
Then there are little clues: meaningless information in the ‘about us’ section on the website; contact details that do not give a clear identification of the company or its location, really bad grammar and spelling in any text. You should also look out for PayPal Verified, McAfee, and Verisign Secured logos, usually located at the bottom of the home page that are not clickable, as well as a Chinese dialing code on the phone number given for live chats; Western Union as a method of payment, its logo located alongside Visa, Mastercard etc and a CNZZ counter logo at the bottom of the page. Most of all, use your common sense – if your instinct tells you it isn’t legitimate, don’t do it!
What wedding dress shopping is all about Remember, finding your dress should be one big, beautiful experience, a neverto-be-forgotten pleasure. Follow our advice and don’t make it a miserable, moneywasting exercise. For more information, visit facebook.com/ BridesBeware and Google ‘brides beware’ for photos that will ensure you don’t get caught in the trap. Instead of searching for your dream dress from unknown sources, take a look at findyourdreamweddingdress. co.uk where you can search through the latest collections from the world’s best designers, and discover their trusted suppliers all over the UK so you can shop securely.

A COUNTRY GARDEN WEDDING
A LICE & NATHA N This spring yellow wedding was all about having fun. Real bride Alice tells us her story... What dress did you wear? “I struggled to find the right dress for me. I tried on many styles but they all felt very formal and I wanted a fun unusual dress to suit me. I popped into Solitaire Brides in Midsomer Norton near Bath, where they had showcased a collection of short dresses. As soon as I put on my dress by Phoenix Gowns, I knew it was the one for me.”

A TRULY PERSONALISED WEDDING
VICKY & NEIL This couple’s day was all about family and personal details. Vicky explains all... What dress did you wear? “I wore a Justin Alexander ivory and lace wedding dress. It was the second dress I tried on and I just knew it was the one, it had everything I wanted. I bought it from The Bridal Path in Childwall, Liverpool.”
And the accessories?
“The accessories were kept simple as the dress had so much detail on, and I didn’t want 64 ♥ L OV E O U R W E D D I N G ♥ N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 5
anything to detract from it. I wore diamond earrings that Neil bought for my birthday on the day he proposed, a simple tennis bracelet from Beaverbrooks and a Matthew Williamson crystal and pearl hair comb, which I bought from Debenhams.”
Who were your bridesmaids and where were their dresses from? “I had four bridesmaids in total. My maid of honour was my best friend Becca and my other adult bridesmaid was my other close friend Liz. To have them by my side meant everything to me.
We also had Neil’s two cousins, Carla and Elena, as flowergirls. Becca and Liz’s dresses were by Chi Chi London, purchased from House of Fraser. The flowergirl dresses were from Debenhams.”
What did Neil wear?
“Neil wore something

very special to him – his family tartan. We had a bespoke kilt made with it, paired with a grey tweed waistcoat and tweed jacket. His shoes were brogues from Loake.”
What was your theme?
“Our theme was based
on our family and us as people. Being an interior design lecturer and Neil being a lighting designer, design was always going to play a major role in our wedding. We based our theme around midcentury modern design. Pattern also played a

role – from the geometric patterns I designed for each tier of the wedding cake, to the geometric tea towel wedding favours and himmeli wreaths for the table centres. It was a labour of love and a theme that was so personal to us.”
What was the highlight of your day?
“My mum giving me away and the speech she gave at the wedding breakfast. Losing my dad at such an early age gave me time to prepare for the day, knowing that he wasn’t going to be there
to do all the father-ofthe-bride things. Having my mum by my side as we walked down the aisle was an honour and something so special.”
What’s your saving tip?
“Go to as many wedding fairs and shows as
possible. We didn’t buy anything but what it gave us was an idea of what we did and didn’t want, as well as a much clearer idea of the things we could do ourselves. Seeing what was out there meant we could plan our budget effectively.” N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 5 ♥ L OV E O U R W E D D I N G ♥ 67

NICOL A & PAUL A vintage romance theme made this day so elegant. We catch up with bride Nicola... How did Paul propose?
“After being together for seven years and having a one year old, Paul knew I wanted to get married. I had given up nagging him when he finally took me by surprise on Christmas morning 2012. It was a complete surprise and the best Christmas present I could have wished for.”
What dress did you wear? “My dress was called

Fada from the Blue collection by Enzoani. I had been to a couple of shops and tried on a few different styles and they all looked nice, but nothing was wowing me. Then I tried on this dress and loved it – I didn’t want to take it off! I bought it from The Bridal
Lounge in Highgate near Sleaford.”
And the accessories?
“I wore a cathedrallength veil by Rainbow Club, a crystal and pearl hair comb from notonthehighstreet, a pearl bracelet that was a present when I was
bridesmaid for my best friend’s wedding, and then Paul bought me a pair of diamond and pearl earrings from Ernest Jones. My shoes were by Rachel Simpson.”

Emily, and my daughter; Evie. Emily’s dress was a floor-length dress from Coast. After finding out Emma was pregnant, I decided to have a dress made for her so it could be altered at the last minute. Evie’s dress was from John Lewis.”
What was your theme?
“Vintage romance, which came together after looking through endless magazines and deciding we both liked pastel colours. I’m also a big fan of lace and pearls and it all just seemed to work together.”
What was your best buy?
“The photo booth from Snapz. It provided great entertainment and we now have a book of funny photos and messages from our guests.”
What’s your saving tip?

And the accessories? “I had pearl drop
earrings along with a matching bracelet, and in my hair I wore a beautiful hair vine. These were all purchased from Lacey Grace Bridal in Somerset.”

with tears filling my eyes, but as soon as Harry turned around I felt completely at ease. It was such a special moment for me.”
What did Harry wear?
What was your theme?
“Harry is a sergeant in the army, so he wore his uniform.”
How did you feel when you saw him up the aisle? “I was really nervous walking down the aisle
“I wanted to tie the wedding theme in with Harry’s uniform, so I added the purples and lilacs in with the red, which looked stunning against the ivory dresses. I had lace in
my dress and so did the bridesmaids, so I carried this theme throughout with pearl and butterfly accessories. Ellie and Emily at Tie The Knot did a great job of putting my ideas all together to style my day.”
What was the highlight of your day?
“The highlight had to be the ceremony and marrying Harry. Having all our close family and
friends there to celebrate with us made it such a special occasion – it really was the most perfect day.”
What’s your saving tip?
“Try to put a little aside into a savings account each month and watch it grow. I have a tip box at work so saved up all my tips and we put any spare change into a pot. It’s really surprising how much it adds up.”

GET FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO HELP
Use your best friends’ and family’s skills to help you save money in the build up to the wedding. From having a live performance from a talented friend to a graphic designer in the family creating all your stationery, it could be their wedding gift to you and will make your day more special.
BOOK EARLY
It pays to book early! If you book your venue for 2017 now, you can pay this year’s rates rather than the inflated prices over the next two years. This is always worth checking when you put down your deposit. GET INSURANCE
This may be an expense but it could save you thousands
of pounds in the long run. Wedding insurance covers everything you need to ensure that your deposits are safe. It only costs between £20-30 as a one-off payment, so it’s worth every penny for peace of mind.

it’s always best to leave it to the professionals! SMALL CEREMONY
The wedding breakfast can work out at a lot per head, so keep numbers down for the ceremony and meal, starting earlier in the day, then have an earlier ‘evening’ party in the late afternoon with plenty more guests and a buffet.

LATER WEDDING
Another way to cut costs is to scrap the wedding breakfast altogether and just have a wedding later in the day with all the guests and a self-serve dinner to keep costs down. MAKE A SPREADSHEET
Keeping on top of your finances is essential in the build up to the big day, but
not only does it help keep you on track, it also monitors your spending. You could make one for the wedding and one for your usual day-to-day expenses and see where you can make cuts to fund the wedding. Remember to always overestimate – it’s much better to have a little left over than coming up short leaving yourself in debt after the day.

CHOOSE A CHEAP DATE
There are some dates in the diary that are inevitably cheaper than others. For example, midweek weddings are a lot cheaper than Friday-Sunday. Or Friday 13th will never be a popular choice for suspicious couples! Although becoming more popular, the autumn and winter seasons will also be cheaper than peak seasons.
HONEYMOON GIFTS
One of the biggest expenses for a wedding is the honeymoon. You’ll most likely book the trip of a lifetime, and they don’t come cheap. Rather than forking out for it when you have the wedding to fund, instead plan where you’d like to go and ask for money from guests as your gift so you can pay for it after the wedding.
DON’T BUY TOO EARLY
Many brides make the mistake of getting very excited shortly after engagement and buying everything wedding-related in sight! The details you buy here and there soon add up, and when you finally decide your theme, look and dress, they may not be suitable for the big day and you’ve wasted a ton of money. Be patient and wait
until you have the big things ironed out before diving into the details. BULK BUY
If you have access to a wholesaler for food, alcohol or even decorations and materials, use it to bulk buy for your wedding. This will inevitably be the cheapest option for you and you can
