Janet Withington I was born, brought up and educated just outside London. After a couple of interesting jobs, I was bitten by the travel bug and came to Cape Town where I worked for an airline. After marrying Charles, who was then working at Rustenberg, we spent 30 happy years bringing up our three children and being involved in the wine industry. Wine and the Darling Wine Shop, are still important in our too-busy lives. I enjoy reading, gardening and everything Darling, but most of all spending time with our family and grandchildren.

Jare later kyk ons terug en dink: Was daardie vakansie regtig so lekker? Was daardie oomblik regtig so mooi?
So maak ek ook met my kleintydse herinneringe. My pa was die dominee. Ek onthou die kosmosblomme langs die hoofpad waarop my ma so verlief was en die Sasol-fabriek se vlam. Ek onthou my mooi Graad 2-onderwyseres, juffrou Donsie, en die trompoppie-konsert. My Pippy Langkous-uitrusting by die kerkbasaar. My nuwe bababoetie.

THE EASTER ISSUE 2016 j
My grys kat, Kiets. Die foto in my kop is foutloos. Ek was onlangs weer op Trichardt. Ons het daar ingedraai omdat ek nuuskierig was. Ek wou vir my man my Instagram-foto wys. Vandag is my seun nege jaar oud. Dis so oud soos ek was toe ons Trichardt toe getrek het. Roomys eet by die Pers Huisie en poelvisse vang by Slabber se Klippe. ‘n Filter op my kinders se Instagram-herinneringe.
I LOVE YZER DARLING
Wind? Mpf! Watter wind? ‘Kom staan hier onder my blad,’ sê jy. ‘Kyk in die lens,’ sê jy. ‘Glimlag vir my foto,’ sê jy. Ek kan in my pantoffels oorstap om suiker by my buurvrou te leen. Die apteker ken my naam. Kliek. j

FROM YOU
Tosca
SENT IN BY CHARLES DUCKITT
I
t’s not often one can say that a miracle has taken place Our dogs are as good as children to us, and more than just companions. Not having children to fuss over, as in a regular family, we have instead two Dachshunds. This is Tosca’s miracle: On Monday, 16 Nov , a Female Boomslang, entered the living area of our home and our dogs sounded the alarm. Snoopy our 14 year old, wise and trained to avoid serpents, always keeps his distance but brave little Tosca, our untrained 13 year old, tackled the snake and was rewarded by a bite on her nose. My mother in law then calmly came to the rescue, managing to shoo the snake out of the house and into the garden using a pillow, before phoning me to urgently come to the rescue. I had a look at my dogs but they showed no signs of having been bitten. On Tuesday, I went about my normal chores but noticed a bit of blood in the dog basket. I went to find the dogs which were cuddled up in our bed as is their habit. Bleeding excessively Tosca’s mouth was a mess. I rushed her off to Darling Veterinary Clinic and luck was on my side. Dr Erika Senekal quickly summed up my situation and took the necessary steps. Tosca was put into ICU, fearing the worst. By late afternoon there was little or no improvement. Doctor wanted to do a blood transfusion. I phoned my wife and together we decided that it would be better to have our dog put down, and so I gave the instruction. I assumed that Tosca had been put down and let fly a tribute for her on Facebook, receiving many condolence messages from friends and family who have an understanding of the importance of this life event to us. My wife and I mourned; the tears flowed whilst we tried to explain to old Dog Snoopy that he was alone in life and that his companion of 13 years was no longer. This snake has a lethal haemotoxic venom which although dangerous is very slow acting (it may take 24 hours for the symptoms to become apparent). It requires unique anti-venom. I had asked Doctor to What’s App me when the deed was done. No message came, and later when I phoned her, still no answer. The next day Wednesday, I went to the clinic to pay my dues and collect the blanket. I was told by the assistant that the account had not been finalized and the blanket had been washed and was not dry yet. Whilst standing there Doctor came in and told me she had received donor blood and administered it to Tosca who she had not yet put down. The little dog had recovered very well but was still bleeding. I communicated with Tracey who then did some research, but later that afternoon Tosca was still showing no signs of healing. The research had shown that the venom attacks the red blood cells, breaking them down and thus the victim bleeds to death. We again asked Doctor to put Tosca out of her misery. Again I let folk know my grief. Thursday came. Doctor had not listened to our cry. Instead she and her staff had listened to little Tosca and allowed her to enter into their hearts. Overnight the miracle of prayer helped healing to take place. By Friday morning Tosca had stopped bleeding and had started to nibble at food. Friday 20 Nov 2015 - five days after being bitten and four days after being admitted to ICU.

THE EASTER ISSUE 2016 j
Defying our death wishes, both Doctor and her staff, and our dog were showing us, her guardians, ‘a toffee’. Friday I was summoned and Doctor was worried that I would be furious. How could I be? I was so relieved and thankful, but I was worried as I had no idea how my wife would react. Doctor advised that I should act mournful and say nothing to Tracey at all. How could I do that? My wife was elated at the news. Tosca spent another two days in high care over the weekend before being released back home again. We would like to thank Dr Erika Senekal who took Tosca into her care, using her best judgment and intuition for siding with her patient, to the staff and assistants who gave Tosca their hearts and to the Doberman who gave his blood. Many thanks for the life of Tosca. j
Growing Old
SENT IN BY ROSE BUTLER, AUTHOR UNKNOWN
T
his frail old shell in which I dwell, is growing old, I know full well, but I am not the shell!! What if my hair is turning grey? Grey hair is honourable they say!! What if my eyesight is growing dim, I still can see to follow Him, who sacrificed His life for me, upon the Cross of Calvary!! What shall I care, if life’s old plough has lifted its furrows on my brow? Another house not made by hand, awaits me in the Glory Land! What though I falter in my walk? What though my tongue refuse to talk? I still can’t tread the narrow way. I still can “Watch and Praise and Pray” My hearing may not be as keen as in the past it may have been. Still I can hear my Saviour say, whisper soft “this is the way”. The outward man, does what he can to lengthen out his life short span, shall perish and return to dust, as everything in nature must! The inward man the Scriptures say, is growing stronger every day. How can I then be growing old, when safe within my Saviour’s fold? Ere long my soul shall fly away and leave this tenement of play. This road afresh I’ll drop and rise, to cease the everlasting prize!! I’ll meet you on the streets of gold and prove that “I am not growing old!!”. j

10
THE EASTER ISSUE 2016 j

ARTICLE ALFRED LEGNER
he 11th season of the Darling Music Experience, came to a close on Valentine’s Day with a jazz session on the beach at Yzerfontein. The Dixie Swingers provided one of many highlights of this music festival. The Opening Concert at the NG Kerk, a community event, on 29 January set the scene for a hot summer of great chamber music, opera and jazz on the West Coast. The Piano Battle – two accomplished German pianists, Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis, head–to-head on stage at the new Darling Brewery – took the audience by storm. And the winner was…Andreas Kern. Standing ovations for Opera in Darling’s new fun production of Mozart’s Entfuehrung aus dem Serail (the Abduction from the Seraglio) at the Evita se Perron Theatre.
A series of smaller concerts with, just to name a few, Philippe Raskin and Johannes Fleischmann (violin and piano) from Austria, guitarist James Grace and German pianist Ingo Dannhorn completed the line-up of highly rated international and local musicians. The festival again lived up to its reputation as a platform for young South African talent like Sakhile Humbane, flute, Samantha van Gysen, violin, and the singers of UCT Opera School. More than one thousand happy music lovers were counted. j

• Heerlike snoek (as daar vis is). THE EASTER ISSUE 2016 j

The Urban Pantry Claudia Koopman
When did you start your business and how did it begin? The Urban Pantry started in 2013. The business is a two and a half year old start-up and currently operates as a mobile delivery service, taking delicious comfort food to our clients’ doors. Although the business was only established in 2013 the dream of operating and running my own food business had taken root long before that. Having had a maternal grandmother who was a very creative home-maker, experienced cook and generally obsessed about good food, was the spark that ignited the idea of what is now The Urban Pantry. I have a Masters’ Degree in Town & Regional Planning and worked in local government for a number of years. During the course of my career I lectured at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Free State in their town planning, sustainable development and strategic management programmes before I started my own consultancy, specialising in strategic planning. As a busy professional prioritising healthy and balanced meals rarely happened and I wanted to start a food business that would specifically ease the burden on time-poor individuals in providing delicious and healthy food coupled with convenient and great service. When and where did you trade at your first market? Our first market was the Durbanville Plaasfees in March of 2014. This was the first opportunity to market The Urban Pantry brand and introduce our healthy, comfort food concept to potential clients. We were completely unprepared for the response and the demand for a signature Urban Pantry meal that day. The bustling crowds and queues of customers convinced us that there is definitely a need for a healthier alternative to the usual market fare. Describe your product: Our goal is to provide nutritious, tasty and convenient meals to our clients, and especially to persons following specific dietary plans due to specific food intolerances (gluten-free, banting and vegetarian meal options). We use fresh, natural, organic and free range produce as far as possible to present our clients with value for money meals with an authentic home cooked style. Whether our clients desire weekly meals or a fourcourse meal for 40 guests, quick healthy nibbles for a corporate lunch or picnic, or delicious foodie gift packs sourced with the best local ingredients, the Urban Pantry provides for all unique foodie needs. At markets we often do a board with a salad selection of about 8-10 different seasonal salads, yummy wraps, sharing plates with protein sides and a few quiches. 14
THE EASTER ISSUE 2016 j
What is your best seller? Our menu is seasonal so this is difficult to pin down as there are often varied menu items available at every market. Our variety of seasonal salads however is a constant, and people respond very well to the fresh and vibrant combinations we present. The quiches almost always sell out and the picnic for a family of four is also very popular as it allows for an affordable way to feed a group of people. What are the difficulties to overcome in order to be a market trader? One of the challenges of being a trader is literally taking our entire kitchen on the road while maintaining our standard and quality of providing good, honest fare. This requires careful planning, lots of patience and endurance, come rain or shine. We deal with freshly prepared meals and produce, and limiting our waste on any given day is important but even more so when we operate at markets. The market scene is often unpredictable and one has to be prepared for any and every eventuality. Why do you love participating in markets? We love engaging with our clients and hearing their feedback on what they think of our food. People will literally come and tell you that they’ve enjoyed their meal and become regular clients. We love the energy and the atmosphere of a well organised market and use every bit of the exposure to garner more clients and interest in our brand. Name 5 tips for anyone that want to start selling their products at markets. • Be prepared to work very hard. • Research your idea very well to determine where there are gaps in the market scene. It helps if your product is unique and speaks to what people want. • Try to be flexible and adapt to an ever changing market environment. • Share your love and passion of your product by showcasing and promoting only the best. • Work on those people skills – a smile and friendly chat is always helpful when you are dealing with customers. Mainstreaming Sustainability: We believe that we eat with our eyes as much as with our mouths and therefore our packaging and the way we present our meals are important to us. Our packaging is 100% biodegradable, environmentally safe and made from plant based material. All the cups, utensils, food bags and accessories are 100% recyclable. Our stationery and labels are printed on 90% sugar cane waste (bagasse) and 10% wood fibre, and the paper is unbleached and therefore totally chlorine free. We strive to minimise waste and in our small way hope to contribute to a greener world and working environment. j

Marion Neumeister When did you start your business and how did it begin? It all started back in 2007 when I bought a charm bracelet from a lady, who came to sell her jewellery at our offices. The charms kept falling off and I had to keep repairing them. A while later while again repairing one of the charms, I took a good look at this bracelet and decided I can do this a lot better. That’s how it all began and I have been making all kinds of jewellery ever since. When and where did you trade at your first market? My first market was the quarterly Dit ‘n Dat market in 2012 in the Yzerfontein Community Hall. Prior to our move to Yzerfontein in 2011 I sold my jewellery to colleagues at work, friends, and friends of friends, and family members. Describe your product: I make mixed media jewellery, using beads, gemstones, wood beads and mostly polymer clay. Polymer clay is a very interesting medium with endless possibilities. A creative mind and lots of time are a must, but once it all comes together, is baked, then sanded and polished, it creates beautiful jewellery pieces. Add a chain or a leather band and we have a winner! What is your best seller? I do not really have a best seller. It all depends on the person looking for that specific piece and hopefully finding it. What are the difficulties to overcome in order to be a market trader? None really. Except maybe packing up and taking down the gazebo after a long, hot day in windy conditions! Why do you love participating markets? I love to interact with my customers and also the other market traders. It’s very satisfying when the customers are interested and want to know how my polymer clay jewellery is made. And of course selling … isn’t it the reason why we do what we do? THE EASTER ISSUE 2016 j
Name 5 tips for anyone that wants to start selling their products at markets: • Investigate which markets are suitable to your product. • Decide what equipment you will need to display your products – display is everything. • Price your products competitively. • A passion for what you are creating / selling. • Make sure you have enough money in change, i.e. small notes and change. Lots of customers pay in big notes… • And finally, have enough stock, smile and be friendly … it sells! My jewellery is also available directly. Everyone is welcome to come and have a look at my jewellery at my home in Yzerfontein – please phone me to set up an appointment. j

LUXURY LIVING TRENDS
the changing face of opulence
ARTICLE DAVE NEMETH • PHOTOS SHUTTERSTOCK
T
he face of interior design and decor luxury has certainly changed over recent years and although many elite still spend a fortune on their abodes, the glitz and glam seems to be fading. Rich velvet drapes with Swarovski crystal embellishment, gold plated finials and opulent chandeliers have seemed to diminished in popularity and have been reserved for the outlandish lifestyles of the Middle Eastern oil barons and sheiks. Tough times and worldwide recession, have had an impact on even the wealthiest and although they may still have their abundance of wealth, they have decided to “play down” their unnecessary ostentatious ornamentation. This is a worldwide phenomenon whereby the trend of individuality, tactility and technology have created a complete new aesthetic as well as new found appreciations. A great example of this paradigm shift is the new found appreciation of solid wood in its most natural form, mostly devoid of any carving or inlay, but rather the thickness and type of timber dictating the price tags. A twelve seater, solid oak dining table can easily fetch upwards of R50 000, whilst a similar product in a rarer timber like walnut will fetch up to R200 000. With far more stringent regulations and a worldwide awareness on timber the prices overall have seen a dramatic increase over the past few years. Many new homes currently feature cinema rooms, which are acoustically designed and include state of the art
18
THE EASTER ISSUE 2016 j
recliners, which are remote controlled, and some even feature temperature controlled seats and backs. The audiovisual elements alone can cost in excess of a million rand, before any furniture or finishes have been supplied. The splendors of these areas are often hidden away and not as noticeable as a living room or dining room. “Man Caves” have become equally popular and these can house everything from hunting trophies, to vinyl collections and even rare whiskey collections, with the emphasis being on the individual’s interests and certainly not trend driven. This “new luxury” often includes elements not that noticeable, such as high tech automation, whereby the entire house is controlled from an electronic device such as a tablet or smart phone. This automation includes everything from security, to temperature control, lighting, irrigation and obviously all the audiovisual, which will be abundant throughout the home. With eco consciousness deeply embedded in our psyches, those that can afford it will spare no expense in creating a self-sustainable abode. Features will include solar energy, harvesting of rainwater and even hydroponic plant features. Huge glass windows with electronic blinds are also very popular within new designs allowing for maximum usage of natural sunlight, within the interior space. These kind of financial outlays are so much more meaningful than gold plated taps or toilet seats. The buying of genuine designer items, instead of replicas is an essential part of any elite space, with high-end designer furniture and lighting still finding a market even though they are replicated by the East within weeks of being featured at the Milan fair. Reviving many lost cabinetry trades and crafts, the search for unique and bespoke furniture is probably the biggest luxury trend at the moment. Today a big part of luxury living is having one’s personality and unique lifestyle brought to life through a completely unique living space. j

CONSCIOUS GARDENING:
WHEN IN DROUGHT – LEAVE IT OUT! ARTICLE & PHOTOS PRU DAVIS
W
e are currently in a drought disaster area and therefore have to garden accordingly. Necessity is the mother of invention, so we need to think out of the box regarding traditional gardening practices – and because of the knock-on effect on food prices, I would strongly urge a swing to edible vegetation. The benefits of this shift in garden focus are invaluable, the most obvious being our health and well being. Less obvious is getting back to basics – becoming self-sufficient in terms of providing our own fresh, locally-grown, hopefully organic herbs, vegetables and even some fruits. What is available in the supermarkets is far inferior in taste, quality, freshness and purity. ‘You are what you eat’, therefore it is imperative that we control what we consume - if we want to maintain our health and those we feed! What to do? • MULCH, MULCH, MULCH! Any material – straw, newspaper strips, leaves, grass cuttings (dried), crushed pips, nontreated wood chips, mature compost, rooibos stalks – that will keep moisture in the ground; tea bags and coffee grounds for acid-loving plants. Stones are helpful around container plants. • SHADE PROTECTION – shade cloth, umbrellas, material strung above beds, tree/shrub shade. • PLANT CONTAINERS, RAISED BEDS – plant close together and position for afternoon shade. • Refer to the Swartland Municipality’s website for further tips and updates. 20

THE RISK OF LOSS CAN BE
TRANSFERRED – INSURANCE/ASSURANCE ARTICLE SIMEON WATSON- STOCH (FSP # 3526)
Y
ou can cover yourself for both eventualities. You can ensure that should such an event occur, that your risk is transferred to an insurer. Our day to day lives have examples and benefits of short term insurance in the form of cover for our vehicles; homes and possessions and travel, to mention a few. Long Term Insurance transfers the risk of your death, a severe illness, or a disability befalling you and your loved ones/dependents. This type of insurance also offers Income Protection, premium waivers and numerous others, such as business assurance. Your first port of call in this field is to ensure that you have a qualified and licensed Financial Services Provider to care for your needs: www.fia.org.za/EN/Content/ServiceProviderDirectory This person is obliged, through the FAIS Act, 2002 (Act No 37 of 2002), to act honestly and fairly, with integrity and due skill and diligence; always acting in the interest of you, the client, and to enhance the integrity of the Financial Services Industry. A strong, respectful and honest relationship with your Financial Advisor will give you peace of mind into the future. A good yardstick is “word of mouth” and a recommendation from a trusted source that has developed such a relationship in their experience. The values of the cover you will require will be based on your own personal circumstances, as will your need for that
cover. You will need to consider, as the breadwinner, to provide for your family in the event of your death, for the everyday necessities such as shelter, food, education, transport, day care for the youngest of the family, medical aid and health costs. If you have insufficient savings to cover these costs, these concerns can be addressed through what is called Life cover. The advancement of modern Medicine also has us living longer, and should you contract a Severe Illness, you will require some form of cover that will enable you to make certain changes to your life, and carry you financially, while you are being treated and recuperating. This cover is known as Severe Illness cover, or sometimes dread disease cover. This cover will have variations of comprehensivity. Disability cover will cover you should you become disabled, permanently or partially, and based on the personal information taken and processed with regard to the risk factors that encompass your daily life. Your medical aid/health cover will certainly take care of hospitalization and ongoing treatment, but a rounded insurance portfolio will do that much more, making you and your family secure in the event of death, or life under changed circumstances. Affordability, today, and into the future, is paramount. Open and honest disclosure across the board will allow you and your partner in your security, the Advisor, to make the best possible choices for you and your family’s life. HISTORY About Abraham Katz Whatever the origins of the name, Mr Abraham Katz, a prominent dairy farmer who started farming in the Malmesbury district in 1900, and was considered to be the first dairy farmer to deliver milk from his farms to the distributors in Cape Town, bought a large portion of the farm “Yzerfontein” in 1936. Abraham Katz recognised the area for its favourable winter grazing conditions and also as a coastal retreat for his family. According to all those who knew him, he was a true Boerejood or Afrikaans speaking Jew and a respected and valued member of the community. The foundation Stone of the Old Synagouge in Malmesbury (now the Malmesbury Museum) was laid by Abraham Katz in 1911.

he village of Yzerfontein, steeped in the frontier history of the Cape, is one of the pristine and picturesque towns that dot this wild yet beautiful stretch of coastline. From the long ridge on which the village of Yzerfontein is perched Table Mountain is clearly visible 85km away to the south. As the name suggests, a fountain was discovered there and the prefix ‘Yzer’ is believed to have come from the rustcoloured, iron flavoured water that it produced, although, it is also said that the name may have been derived from a large slab of ironstone found near the fountain.

HISTORY
Detour To Versveld Pass ARTICLE EWA KACZMAREK
O
ne exquisite Cape winter morning I awoke to a light turquoise sky and something permeating the air that quickened the blood in my veins. I had a strong urge to get out and go. Conveniently, my life’s partner was heading towards Swartland to fix up some business in Piketberg, so I hitched a lift. Going towards the N7 Freeway, my thoughts went back to the ‘old-times’ when the route was called “The Copper Way”. It stretched all along the length of the West Coast up to Springbok and Okiep in Namaqualand. The Nama tribe mined copper long before the European settlers took it away from them. As we drove, on both sides of the N7, the wheat fields of the Swartland hugged us with a dull-yellow colour of the cut stalks, while the soil lay waiting patiently to be ploughed again. Between the sharp wheat-spikes sheep were grazing, effortlessly merging into the surroundings so that one only noticed them in the last minute when passing. Infrequent herds of cattle were the only diversity in the colour of the countryside. Not counting the lonely hawk that could be detected sitting dejectedly on the fence, ignoring the traffic that was rampaging through his domain. “Het Zwarte Land”, as Swartland was called, our breadbasket of the Cape. The pride of the region is also in their wines, which have a specific character. Enriched by the chemicals of the soil they have a distinctive taste. The cellars produce a wide variety of wines, some of which can be purchased just before the turn off to Piketberg. Under a thick thatched roof, next to a garage on the N7, there is a cluster of shops where a weary traveler can find both refreshments and knick-knacks, in a relaxed country atmosphere. I spotted a lovely clay pot standing in front on the ground that positively needed me, so I bought it. I could see my mint growing inside it. The lady selling the pot mentioned that every pot while being made, was created for a particular person and that she was glad this pot found its rightful human. Picking up two cool drinks from the cafe and some delicious ‘pad-kos’ I waited for my husband to finish his business. My main objective was to make a detour up Versveld Pass. Following instructions on how to get to it we drove a short way past Piketberg central, towards the mountains. On the way I made a mental note to visit the Dutch Reformed Church which we passed. It was built in a gothic style, with a delicate wooden roof structure and is now proclaimed a national monument. As we started to climb the Pass, a miracle began to unfold in front of our eyes. With every turn of the road there was more to see, and the town left behind was becoming like a miniature toy village. When we reached the top and got out to admire the view I involuntarily inhaled, as if the panoramic beauty presenting itself was the breath of life. The 180° of Swartland Valley stretched below, was criss-crossed by a pattern of fields dotted by farmhouses. Two dams sat importantly side by side in the foreground while the Cedarberg Mountains stood guard over it all on the horizon. From this height the world looked at peace and the overwhelming silence was playing with our senses. We tore ourselves away and carried on driving along the road. The top of the mountain turned into a small plateau where fruit orchards THE EASTER ISSUE 2016 j
thrived, hedged in by protea bushes. The lush greenery hid the farmhouses enjoying their exclusivity from the world below. The road still carried on for about 10 km and ended in a cul-de-sac. We turned back and found a picnic spot built into the top bend of the Pass. We scrambled up to it and sat down to eat and enjoy the view. The story of the Pass fascinated me. It has been said that a couple of hundred years ago two run-away sailors, one Dutch and the other English, had hidden away in these remote mountains. They settled there and began farming. Only the Bushman paintings in the caves gave witness to earlier inhabitants. Around 1868 Johan Versveld bought the original smallholding and started farming tobacco for the use of the settlers. Everyone thought that he was mad to farm up in the clouds, and to put up with the problem of getting his crops to the market. Undeterred, he built his spectacular Pass with three loops, to enable a span of oxen pull a wagon around the steep bends of the dirt road. This opened the mountain to other pioneers. They soon found out that apples, pears and peaches would thrive growing on the summit. Eventually a tarred road was built up and named the Versveld Pass, which brought the riches of the settlement closer to the markets. I sat and wondered about the man who had enough curiosity, vision and dogged determination to make an access to the fertile land above. Was it the encompassing beauty that gave him the strength? Far below, in the valley, one could see a toylike tractor moving along a field. One of its wheels squeaked for oil, the sound being carried to the top of the Pass. Around the picnic spot where we sat the road twisted and turned with the traffic of the two worlds crawling along it. A truck piled up high with apples passed by, with workers sitting on top and waving madly, seeing us on the slope. They were shouting something and laughing openly like children. I waved back infected by their happiness. The whole experience was so enriching that I challenge all those who like to travel to take a detour to Versveld Pass. Whether you are visiting Cederberg Mountains or Springbok to see the wild flowers in season, or making a round trip to Saldanha Bay along the R399, turning back to Cape Town along the R27, treat yourself and make that detour. j

ARTICLE & PHOTOS CHARLES WITHINGTON
S
outh Africa is acknowledged as having the most sophisticated most authentic Wine Certification system in the world. That rather bureaucratic looking sticker on each and every bottle of certified wine verifies the type of wine, the year produced and the origin of the grapes. Each and every bottle has a unique number that makes it traceable back to the vineyard. Anyone, anywhere, with access to the internet can go to the South African Wine Information System website, type in the seal number, and verify that what it says on the label is indeed inside the bottle. Started way back in 1973, the Wine of Origin system has, over the years, engendered more and more consumer confidence; so while we might not trust our government we trust in our local wine, and to such an extent that it is very difficult for imported wines at the low and mid-price level, to make any headway in our local market. Incidentally, the same applies to olive oil where we are wary with regard to the purity and authenticity of imports. Not wanting to bore you with the intricacies of the Wine of Origin System let me fast forward to appellation DARLING and sketch the situation here. Darling consists firstly and logically with the region DARLING, one of the 26 registered wineproducing districts. Within the Darling region, there is a small sub-region or Ward, called GROENEKLOOF and producers in this Ward sometime elect to choose this in that they feel it more terroir specific. The rule of Wine Certification (appellation) is that you can always choose the larger area if you wish, but unless all your grapes or wine, qualify for inclusion into the smaller appellation – this is not possible. So for example, wines grown under the Groenekloof appellation can also be labelled “Darling” but not the other way round. The market or the producer will dictate the decision. Of course, if the producer wants to select an even bigger area, and use fruit outside Darling, then Coastal Region becomes an option. As the consumer, simply remember if it says “Wine of Origin – Darling”, it is guaranteed pure Darling, whoever the producer

might be, and vice versa! The weather has so dominated our minds over the last few months, and rightly so, as it is a torrid time for local farmers whatever they might be growing. Californian Phil Freese is one of the top five viticulturists in the world. He was in Darling the other day and en route from Stellenbosch, he stopped to have a look at the vineyards approaching Darling. His comment was along these lines… “there are some seriously old bush vines out there that have seen many, many summers; they will have learned to cope a lot better than we think… and there could still be some really good wines in the offing… though maybe in lesser quantity.” Wise words indeed! I thought Father Christmas had done us proud, but looking at some of the offerings right now in the Wine Shop, I reckon he is going to be trumped by the Easter Bunny. I am hoping to find the following hidden in the flower beds on Easter Sunday: • Groote Post Riesling 2013/2014/2015 – there is almost none left, and if you manage to find any grab it with both hands. • Darling Cellars – Lady Anne Darling 2015 – Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon. Champion South African White Wine last year. A beautifully crafted “white Bordeaux” style wine. • Darling Cellars – Premium Sauvignon Blanc 2015 – Veritas Double gold. Absolute winner – very little available. • Cloof Crucible 2014 – this iconic Darling wine only appears in very exceptional years. Special occasion stuff indeed. • Drie Papenfontein Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2015 – this from the Charles Back’s vineyards overlooking Darling village. Another example of the well-known “Back magic”. • Roan Ranger 2014 – this is the second vintage due to be released by Easter. Elegant, soft and hugely drinkable. • Niel Joubert “Herr Leicht” 2015 - not Darling but dear to me - Sauvignon blanc 56% Nouvelle 21% Chenin Blanc 14% Cruchen blanc 8% Have a great Easter. It is a wonderful time of the year and without the retail hype of Christmas, more time for family, friends and fine wine, though not to forget what it is all about!j

COOK
Cajun Calamari Salad Serves 4-6 people This recipe has been a favourite standby for years. We made it at a restaurant at which I worked and it was always a very popular item on the menu. Still today, it is one of our best sellers. I have tweaked it for ingredients that we have ready available in our kitchen. Ingredients • 500g Calamari tubes and tentacles (the already-cleaned Patagonia is the easiest and best) • 250ml Cream • Cajun spice – a good 3 pinches • 2 Lemons (You use the one in the calamari when cooking and the other you cut into wedges to serve with the salad.) • A glug of oil • Butter – a blob • Mixed fancy lettuce – one bag • Baby tomatoes – 250g • Cucumber – one half sliced • Feta – one or two round disks • Roasted veg (We roast together roughly chopped baby marrow, 1 red-. 1 yellow- and 1 green pepper & butternut.) • Olives – about a handful • Fresh coriander
RECIPE & PHOTO ANESIA DARNÉ Method Make sure your calamari is clean; there may still be some of the hard bits inside the tubes. Heat up your pan, nice and hot. Put in the oil, followed by the calamari. You want to fry it, turning continuously until just starting to brown. Now add your Cajun spice and butter, a good squeeze of lemon juice and mix all together well. When butter is melted add the cream. Let simmer for about 5 minutes, until the sauce has reduced and thickened. In the meantime put the salad together. Arrange the salad ingredients just as you wish, leaving out the coriander and lemon wedges. When the calamari is ready, scoop it on top of your salad, followed by the fresh coriander for garnish with the lemon wedges. j

Eighteen’94 West Coast Food Heroes: Dig it at The Cheese – Chicory Cheese
ARTICLE GIL FERREIRA • PHOTOS PAUL DARNÉ
O
n 21 July 2015 I posted the following on Trip Advisor about Chicory Cheese (and also gave it 5 stars): “Always innovative, this is really more Chic Bistro than Coffee Shop. Interesting and delicious breakfast (when last did you have Bubble & Squeak?) and light meal options, great selection of smoothies (that you will not see everywhere) and always a fantastic “special” or two. The deli is also fabulous with a lot of produce that you only find in high end “city” delis. Friendly staff wait on you - this is really a gem in Darling.” Nearly a year on and the only thing that has changed is its location. “The Cheese” as it is affectionately known by Darling locals needed to grow, and has done so beautifully at its new premises - The Granary, 5 Long Street, Darling. Proprietor, Anesia Darné, continues to innovate, not only with the fantastic new look but also always with the food. In visiting it again recently to write this review I noticed that there have been some additions to the menu (particularly the ever increasingly popular banting options). There are also always interesting and new specials on the blackboard.
“The Cheese” has also become somewhat known for smoothies, and I can honestly say that you will be hard pressed to find a better smoothie anywhere! Breakfasts are top drawer, with no less than 12 options – my favourite remains Bubble & Squeak. The lunch / light meals menu offers something for everyone – from fresh vegetarian options to “The Almost Caveman” and everything in between. The kids’ menu has great, healthy, options (not the usual chicken nuggets and chips!) - my 8-year-old daughter is always hounding me to take her to “The Cheese” for the Pasta with chicken and basil pesto – and I can safely say that she is an honest critic when it comes to food! It really is a fantastic menu, with much of the fresh ingredients grown in the back garden! Anesia has found a niche for the deli specialising in health products - things that you would expect to find from high-end city health shops, are now available right here in the heart of the Swartland! And if you are stuck for dinner – then the deli also boasts a large number of ready-made meals, ready for you to heat and eat at home. Chicory Cheese is Darling hospitality personified and this is why Anesia Darné and her team are true West Coast Food Heroes in my book. Pop into “The Cheese” on your next visit to Darling and enjoy the charm and food of this wonderful establishment! j

he story of Simply Bee is intertwined with family history, starting with our dad - Derick Hugo – who had been a passionate hobbyist beekeeper since 1954. Our bee hives are strategically placed in Fynbos areas around Hopefield with no commercial farming within the immediate vicinity. Our bees are not used for commercial pollination either, which eliminates the negative effects of exposure to chemicals. In 2008 Pierre and Helena van der Westhuizen took over the business and launched Simply Bee Honey & Simply Bee Natural Beeswax Products (Pty) Ltd. Due to Helena having a sensitive skin herself, she set out to develop an all-natural range of honey, beeswax and propolis products, using only the raw materials from their own hives. The main aim was to create a range free from harmful chemicals, synthetic fragrances and parabens, making it both safe and environmentally friendly. We started off with five products in our line, and now proudly offer over forty all-natural products ranging from body lotions, hand creams, foot balms, ointments, shampoo, soaps, facial skin products, polishes and Fynbos honey. We are very passionate about the environment, and we understand that the world has changed, so we know that the choices we make daily in our business, deliver a strong message on the world we want to live in. Our mission is to thus not only cultivate awareness of the benefits of using natural honey, beeswax and propolis products, but also to aid in the area of bee conservation.

HONEY REMEDIES A combination of honey and cinnamon has been found to alleviate most ailments. Produced in most of the countries of the world, honey does not seem to have any side-effects and modern scientists also note honey as very effective medicine for all kinds of diseases. Even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients. • INDIGESTION Cinnamon powder sprinkled on a teaspoon of honey taken before food is eaten relieves acidity and helps to digest the heaviest of meals. • LONGEVITY Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, reduces the ravages of old age. Use 4 teaspoons of honey, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder, and 3 cups of boiling water to make a tea. Drink a ¼ cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and slows down the aging process. • RASPY OR SORE THROAT When the throat has a tickle or is raspy, take one tablespoon of honey and sip until gone. Repeat every three hours until throat is without symptoms. • PIMPLES Mix a paste of 3 tablespoons of honey and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder. Apply this paste on the pimples before bedtime and wash it off the next morning with warm water. When done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root. • COLDS Those suffering from common or severe colds should take 1 tablespoon lukewarm honey with ¼ spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will relieve most chronic coughs and colds, clear the sinuses and it’s delicious too! • UPSET STOMACH AND GAS Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach problems and is also said to help with stomach ulcers! Take one teaspoon of honey mixed with half a teaspoon of cinnamon. Repeat as needed. • IMMUNE SYSTEM Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Mix half a glass of warm water (not boiled) with one teaspoon of honey and ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon, consume every morning. This remedy also seems to give promising results with allergies when honey of your area is used. • BURNS Apply honey to a burn immediately (no cold water like usual) and keep there as long as possible, wrapped and you will not believe how quickly the healing starts. A teaspoon of honey on a burned tongue from hot coffee, tea or soup, takes the burn away instantaneously!! Visit our Bee Observation centre right here in Hopefield for a full educational on the life cycle of the Cape Honey bee, learn how honey is made and to taste our honey. j

Derma Pen #Controlled Injury ARTICLE & PHOTO MEGON BURDEN

hen we injure ourselves our skin naturally repairs itself by the body’s mechanism called wound healing. When we have a cut or abrasion our skin starts producing new collagen and elastin fibres which can be visualised as forming a collagen network – like a spider’s web - to heal the area of injury. The same rule applies when we are treating wrinkles or a very good example, acne scarring. The objective is to stimulate or puncture the skin to get the collagen and elastin production stimulated by means of creating #controlled injury, with needles that equally penetrate to a certain depth. The skin thinks it is getting injured and therefore makes the “construction workers” (fibroblast cells) aware of the injury resulting in the skin starting to rebuild itself. There is minimal discomfort; the therapist will use a topical anaesthetic to numb the area that needs treatment (generally it will be the whole face). For each client a 12 needle point cartridge is used that vertically pierces the skin at a 0.5mm/1mm/2mm depth

depending on certain factors. The device is an automated penlike instrument used for medical and aesthetic skin needling. The device runs smoothly across the skin with the needles moving up and down, and works at a speed of 6000 – 8000 rpms (revolutions per minute). Thus it does not cause tearing of the underlying tissue. It is an aesthetic treatment and involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny, sterile, medically graded needles, so creating thousands of micro columns in the skin. These columns do not stay open for very long. This not only kick-starts the skin’s natural repair and rejuvenation process, but also the absorption of skincare products is increased significantly. The skin will bleed slightly, but old damaged collagen strands are broken up making room for new fibres. The skin will be slightly red after the treatment, looking as if you had sunburn, but it is the skins natural inflammatory response to start the healing process. Treatment indications: jj Skin tightening jj Natural collagen induction jj Lifting and rejuvenating jj Reduces wrinkles and fine lines jj Improves stretch marks jj Helps with hair regeneration jj Acne scars, surgical scars and wound healing jj Improves enlarged pores j

SERVICE!
ARTICLE & PHOTO DR MARGUERITE DU PLESSIS Meet Dr Margs du Plessis, newly installed in Yzerfontein and doing her community service in the greater Swartland area.
Y
our community service year in any profession tends to be one of the most challenging years in your career. Not only are you faced with adulthood responsibilities and need to deal with words like “tax” and “insurance” for the first time, but you are placed in a foreign town and expected to do a job for which you are not quite sure that you enough experience. When I arrived in Darling at the start of this year to provide primary animal health care to the Swartland community, I was overwhelmed with challenges. I had no facility to work from, no equipment, no medicine and no funding. Luckily for me Dr Deverson from The Village Vet took me under her wing and has been kind enough to give me access to her veterinary facilities to treat the underprivileged community’s animals. She has not only been an incredible mentor teaching me patiently, but a role model, and I hope to be as kind and compassionate a Veterinarian as she is. Despite a bit of a rough start, great things have been achieved. I have established a community veterinary clinic facility at The Village Vet that will be able to host a new CCS vet for many years to come. This facility will focus on providing affordable animal health care, educating the community about responsible pet ownership and hosting sterilizing campaigns. As mentioned, I have no funding and am relying solely on sponsorship, donations and general generosity from the public and relevant companies to keep this clinic up and running. I have been blessed with equipment, monetary contributions and medical supplies from Wirsam, Dr Davey, Dr Pyper, Colopalst, Cipla, Cape Town Mediclinic, Elanco, Cheryl Vermeulen, F10, Mr Cassim, Checkers, A&A Furnishers, Biotech and Kyron. A BIG thank you to all of you.
At times it seems like an impossible feat to make this a sustainable project, but when Alice was in Wonderland she said “This is impossible” and the Mad Hatter responded “Only if you believe it is”. I believe that it’s possible to build a facility that will truly make a difference in this community with respect to animal welfare. I hope that everyone will share my enthusiasm and get on board and support this essential clinic. j

he Darling Outreach Foundation (Ons Nessie) is a nonprofit organisation and was established on 18 May 2010. It had its origins in the kitchens of local women, who voluntarily gave soup to needy children. Soon it was realized that the children needed more than food and in 2009 Louise Barends was appointed as the full time Social Worker, responsible for the daily running of the project. After the building was extended and with the help of committed staff and generous donations, we implemented various upliftment programmes. Our main focus is on children and their families in Darling, but we manage to include surrounding farms as well. Two hundred children are fed daily. During school holidays we facilitate a week long programme for children, in conjunction with other entities in town. In the past 3 years we also focused on family preservation, where we strengthen families and first time mothers. via parental programmes. When we have the necessary funding, we also organise family days and family camps for those who participated in these programmes. Weekdays study support is given to fifty Primary School children. We have a daily playgroup for children who are not in nursery schools. On Wednesdays we have a Good News and Kids Club where we incorporate life skills. Programmes on social awareness are also taught, so that families can make informed decisions. We have support groups for women and offer counselling when needed. Through the years we have managed to build various partnerships and networks that help us to expand and strengthen our vision. We really want to thank everyone who helped us to bring about positive change to the lives of children. j

ow easy is it nowadays to get the right price for the wrong accommodation? So you have a beach get-away planned, and got everyone excited about the idea of spending the weekend away…away-away. Since you are seen as the most discerning online traveller, you are tasked to find the ideal beach get-away – at just the right price of course! You don’t delay since you know the early bird catches the worm, and you confidently start browsing through the myriad of online options to track down ‘the one’. Although the pretty beach pictures grab you at every click, you keep your internet cool and make sure you go online wherever ‘best views’ and ‘close to the beach’ take you. You exceed your clan’s expectation when your pic-‘n’-price search pays off giving a small discount in your final negotiated quotation. Now, the only thing that stands between you and your dream beach break is time…right? Right! Dear fellow dream holiday makers. We have all arrived at a destination, confident about our price, yet somewhat disillusioned about the accommodation. But why should you? Here are some of my favourite things to look out for next time you shop for the perfect beach retreat: • Must ‘speak’ beach – means beach life is an integral part of the place. Make sure there is a special spot for those memory-making sunrise and sunset celebrations. Make this happen on the private dune at Rooisee. • Simplicity is luxury – delivered from the crisp linen to the lazy chairs. Just to remind you of a time and place where nothing else matters. The renovated nostalgia is the Rooisee soul secret. • A world away – away from the madding town crowds, yet close to Yzerfontein wedding venues and coastal birding jewels such as the pink salt pans. • A paradise apart – a place with a sense that there is an adventure to be had…such as the never-ending 16 Mile beach in this neck of the Yzerfontein dunes. j

Kry ‘n bemarkingshupstoot met West Coast Way ARTIKEL & FOTO WEST COAST WAY

West Coast Way is in 2014 gestig deur Carmen Lerm, eienaar van FusionDesign.

hile the cycle event itself will be the main focus of the day, it should not detract from the wonderful entertainment and food stalls which will allow the entire family to enjoy the day. The cycle route is mostly flat, fast and non-technical, so it will appeal to both veteran cyclists looking for a fast 73km training ride, or the more relaxed rider looking to ride the 47km route. The excitement stems from the fact that entrants will be riding a unique route not normally open to the public. Starting from the main beach parking area in Yzerfontein, the competitors will wind their way out of the town, onto the R315, and will turn off onto the Blombosch road which will take them into the West Coast National Park. The Park Manager, Pierre Nel, has generously approved a route which takes the cyclists on private jeep tracks through the splendid nature which the West Coast has to offer. On the return route there is a mixture of tar and jeep track which leads back to the finish line at the main beach, where competitors will receive a medal, a Coca Cola, and a Goodie Bag from Premier FMCG. Coming on board as main sponsors are Premier FMCG’s brand Blue Ribbon. Premier FMCG (Pty) Limited was founded over 195 years ago, and its operation and distribution facilities run throughout South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique. Premier FMCG also operate a home and personal care business in the United Kingdom. Today Premier markets iconic South African brands such as Snowflake, Blue Ribbon, BB Bakeries, Star, Mister Bread, Impala, Iwisa, Super Sun, Nyala, Invicta, Manhattan and Super C, Lil-Lets, Vulco and Dove Cotton Wool.
Nodumo Novuka, Corporate Communications Officer at Premier FMCG adds: “We are honoured to support such a remarkable initiative. This is not just any race, we are uplifting the Yzerfontein and Darling community, and proceeds will benefit the International Police Association (West Coast Region), The Reach for a Dream Foundation and the Darling Trust. All three beneficiaries will be available on the day to talk to interested parties about the organisations and the work they do. Our vision is to grow our people, customers and brands therefore our partnership with the Yzerfontein Cycle Experience supports the ethos of Growing Together.” Pierre Nel, the West Coast National Park manager has opened his arms to all participants with the following statement: “West Coast National Park extends a warm welcome to all participants in the Blue Ribbon Yzerfontein Cycle Experience Race. We are honoured that the organizers of this event have selected the West Coast National Park as part of this race”. The park is popular among cyclists and currently the Lagoon Challenge Cycle Race, which will be hosted in November, is the only other cycle event in the park. This Blue Ribbon event thus adds a new dimension to cycling in the park as it offers riders an alternative route from that of the Lagoon Challenge. We are proud to be associated with Blue Ribbon Yzerfontein Cycle Experience hosts in the organizing and hosting of this event. I encourage entrants to enjoy the race and the splendour which West Coast National Park has to offer.” The event is sanctioned by the Pedal Power Organisation. As such, cyclists can be assured that route markings and safety arrangements adhere to the Association’s requirements. j Cyclists will be able to enter the event on: www.pedalpower.org.za or on the morning of the event.
