Contributors DR. FRIEDA HENNING and her husband Ernst are co-owners of Kaalvoet in Yzerfontein. Frieda is a successful businesswoman but also has a creative side, with a love for interiors and décor. She is a cancer survivor and also a founding member of CANCERVIVE, an organisation that creates awareness of the importance of early detection. This group travels to rural areas on motorcycles to spread their message. You might spot Frieda on her Harley Davidson decorated in pink flames! KIM VAN NIEKERK is a born and bred Capetonian with an abiding love for the pace and people of the Cape West Coast. Since discovering Darling, she has developed a passion for the village’s local produce, craft beer and small town charm.
ANÈL HENNING MÜLLER is well known in Yzerfontein for her absolutely mouthwatering culinary creations. She is the mother of three children; Zane, Kaelin and Keithon. They’ve been living in Yzerfontein since 2016. Anèl is passionate about everything creative, be it cooking, writing, painting or graphic design!
FRIKKIE VAN SCHALKWYK is the owner of Inkuni Crafts. He manufactures a huge range of timber products and is one of the regular traders at the Groote Post Country Market.

ELANA’S EMPIRE
ARTICLE DONNAY TORR | PHOTOS ELANA AFRIKA-BREDENKAMP
Whether she’s glowing on the red carpet at the Laureus World Sports Awards 2019, uniting and inspiring mothers with the Baby Brunch or clowning around with her two young daughters: Elana AfrikaBredenkamp remains a powerhouse of a woman. Donnay Torr had a chat with the busy dynamo.
E
lana has steadily and surely been building an empire... One based on a solid work ethic and a genuine caring for others. Her Baby Brunch project brings together parents from all walks of life to share their stories and find inspiration and support along the way. The Parenting Series of Podcasts cover stories from everyday moms and dads, but also deal with heartwrenching situations, such as parents losing a child. Her work as a presenter on radio and TV has made her a familiar, beloved voice and face. She’s in high demand as a corporate MC, and was recently nominated for a SAFTA (South African Film and Television Award) for her work in TV game show Parlement Parlement. To top things off, she’ll soon be shooting season two of kykNET’s Fynskrif-series. It’s safe to say that she’s never been busier – or happier! I’LL BET YOU HEAR THE QUESTION “HOW ON EARTH DO YOU JUGGLE MOTHERHOOD AND ALL YOUR PROJECTS?!” QUITE OFTEN... HOW DOES THAT QUESTION MAKE YOU FEEL?
It makes me feel blessed that six years into it I’m starting to feel like I know how to do it! Anyone who says ‘I mastered it within 12 months’ is delusional. Last year I bought a house in Gauteng after I was asked to take over the 9am to 12pm show on Jacaranda FM. It meant that although I still work regularly from my Cape Town office, and we still have a home in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, I spend 80% of my time in Pretoria and Johannesburg for my radio show, corporate MC work, and building my other Baby Brunch businesses. Cape Town is always where the heart is, though, and I’m looking forward to more walks on the promenade and coffees on the Atlantic Seaboard when I’m back in The Mother City soon to shoot season two of kykNET’s Fynskrif. My babies have become accustomed to the warm days, afternoon thundershowers and treelined streets in Gauteng and life between Gauteng and Cape Town is exciting and filled with blessings. My number one question is always: are my babies happy and settled? Provided that that’s a ‘Yes’, we’re fine! 8 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING
DO YOU STILL ENCOUNTER STEREOTYPES AROUND WORKING WOMEN, AND WHAT THE ROLE OF A WOMAN SHOULD BE?
Personally I encounter less of those than expected, probably because the media space is more liberal and forward-thinking than other sectors. We deal with similar issues in my Baby Brunch-podcast, and I’m well aware that many thousands of moms have to battle those stereotypes on a daily basis. WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT BUSINESS LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED?
One: Oprah always says listen to your little voice. I’ve become better at doing that as time goes by, and your little voice (some people call it intuition) is ALWAYS right. Two: Build a great team. I wouldn’t be able to do as many things as I do if I didn’t employ great staff. Hire people who do things better than you can! And three: Do things with passion, and try to effect change along the way. It helps you to build a legacy, and to be able to leave something behind. DID ANY OF THESE LESSONS COME FROM UNEXPECTED PLACES, PEOPLE OR EXPERIENCES?
There are two people who had the biggest influence on me... My Dad, Hennie Afrika, taught me my values and work ethic. And the other is Ma Doreen Morris. Growing up, I watched her on M-Net and I wanted to be like her. A woman of colour on TV in South Africa was a rare occurrence! Twenty years later and she’s now my friend and mentor. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ELANA 10 YEARS AGO, AND ELANA NOW?
That’s an easy answer – I became a wife and mother! It changed my priorities, it changed how I spend my time and it changed me.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE BABY BRUNCH PROJECT?
I started it because I needed a support system after I had my daughter four years ago, but couldn’t find one. Aside from your girlfriends on a Whatsapp group, where did one get the support and answers to the pressing questions we had as new moms? I wanted an event for moms that was real. Something that didn’t only cover the rosy parts of motherhood, but the hard times too. THE HEALING SERIES PODCAST DEVELOPED FROM THE BABY BRUNCH PROJECT. SOME OF THE STORIES YOU SHARE ARE VERY TOUCHING. WHEN YOU STARTED THIS PODCAST, WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO ACHIEVE?
We wanted to share real stories and inspire change through them. YOU’VE JUST BEEN NOMINATED FOR A SAFTA AWARD - TELL ME A BIT MORE ABOUT PARLEMENT PARLEMENT?
I loved shooting that show! It was a very different format for me, and a new format for TV in South Africa. A game show starring comedians? It had never been done before and it was a wild and exciting ride. I enjoy hosting a show and holding it together, so my role as Madame Speaker let me do what I do best. It’s very different to what I’ve been doing for the past 12 months in my role as Gertrude (the legal secretary) in kykNET’s Fynskrif.
ELANA AT THE LAUREUS SPORTS AWARDS IN MONACO EARLIER THIS YEAR. DRESS BY DIAAN DANIELS
Sports Awards – that was amazing! And I have another wine label coming out soon… the rest is hush hush!
DO YOU STILL FIND JOY IN RADIO AND TV PROJECTS?
Radio is the best! It’s live, it’s right now, we get to lift people up, or share difficult stories with them. It’s a very intimate and honest space. You might be watching TV with two or three other people but most people listen to the radio by themselves. It’s one-on-one. Just me and the listener. ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC PROJECTS CURRENTLY BUBBLING
YOUR PROJECTS ARE DIVERSE BUT SEEM TO HAVE A SHARED CORE: HELPING AND INSPIRING OTHERS. IS THIS WHAT DRIVES YOU?
It’s everything to me. Real human connection is an important driver for many people around the world. I don’t want to waste my time on earth with things that don’t make a difference.
UNDER THE RADAR?
So many! My husband and I own the ‘Piekniek en Musiek’ Afrikaans concert series. We’ve done seven shows in the Cape area and we’re expanding it North. I have more Baby Brunch events coming up this year, and I’m doing a lot of work with Mercedes Benz South Africa. I’ve just returned from Monaco with them, where I attended the Laureus
WHERE DID THIS DRIVE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE COME FROM?
You know what they say: motherhood changes everything! WHICH OF YOUR PROJECTS HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE?
Definitely Baby Brunch. We’re two years into it but only just getting started. DO YOU SOMETIMES FIND IT EXHAUSTING OR DIFFICULT TO REMAIN POSITIVE?
Everyone has good days and bad days. I overcome the bad days by going for a run, or taking my dog for a walk, or in prayer. One needs time to decompress.
WORK TOGETHER TO KEEP THINGS RUNNING SMOOTHLY?
ELANA, ESTHER, IAN & ANNABELLE
We both work in mediums that we love. His businesses and my businesses have one thing in common: we’re really passionate about them, and we have fun doing it! Ian and I work together on some things, but not on everything, so that space and variety help us to be even better on the projects we share.

COVER IS THERE ANYTHING SPECIFIC THAT MAKES YOU ANGRY OR FRUSTRATES YOU, IN LIFE AND BUSINESS?
Oh yes! Where do I start! In life, if you want to see me angry, have a stranger in a shop touch my child’s hair or tummy or whatever! In business, it’s difficult to see how some people see colour or gender first, creating a barrier for them. Some cannot move past it. WHAT MADE YOU PROUDEST OF YOURSELF, YOUR HUSBAND AND YOUR DAUGHTERS THIS PAST YEAR?
Esther is adapting well to her new school where we live in Centurion – I love seeing her playing with her friends. Annie just turned two – we had her birthday party a few weeks ago and I couldn’t be prouder! Ian produces a new stand-up comedy show (Lekker Lag Afrikaanse Komediefees) – it sold out at GrandWest last year and he’s been invited to take it to the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival this Easter! AT THE END OF THE DAY, WHEN YOU GET HOME, RELAX, KICK OFF YOUR SHOES... HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ELANA IN THAT MOMENT?
Quiet and blessed. j
QUICK QUESTIONS
IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE EACH OF YOUR DAUGHTERS IN A SENTENCE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Esther will rule the world one day – look up “dynamic” on Google and I’m sure her face will appear. Annabelle is gentler, but doesn’t suffer fools gladly. She’s certainly the most headstrong of my daughters. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON THEY’VE TAUGHT YOU?
They’ve taught me to be more patient and that time is finite. One day I’ll be old and frail and my babies will be women. Take in as much time with them as I can NOW. Do not wait. YOU LOOKED FABULOUS AT THE LAUREUS AWARDS - HOW DO YOU MAKE TIME TO KEEP FIT AND HEALTHY?
Thanks for saying that! I don’t always feel that fit! I have a notoriously short attention span, so I’m often trying new ways to keep fit. There are amazing walking and running trails where we live, which makes it easy to get out every evening for a walk or run. I began running two years ago to help shake off post-pregnancy weight and it’s become something I really love. Last year I teamed up with my namesake Elana Meyer for the Cape Town Marathon. Training with Elana was next-level and is something I’m looking forward to continuing this year. That aside, we’re not health freaks – very far from it – but Ian and I almost never eat take-out and we don’t have sugary drinks in the fridge. Those small day-to-day choices help! 10 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION TO RELAX WITH YOUR FAMILY? My family and I have spent some of our best holidays on the West Coast! Lunch at Strandloper is life-changing, right?! Drives through the West Coast National Park and Kraalbaai to see the flowers is a must-do and my best stops are at the padstalletjies - we always buy breads and jams for the grandparents. FAVOURITE BOOK: I’m reading two favourites right now: Michelle Obama’s autobiography and Thrive by Arriana Huffington. FAVOURITE MUSIC: In my car I have Klipwerf Boereorkes, Spoegwolf and the latest Afrikaans is Groot. FAVOURITE PERSON: My Dad. FAVOURITE THING TO DO: Down-time with Annie and Essie. They LOVE the Johannesburg and Pretoria Zoos!

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES | MYRTLE SAMBABA Here in Darling there are many “inspirational stories” waiting to be told – a welcome antidote to the doom and gloom presented by the media. The people who make up these stories may have made a difference in our community giving of themselves and their time, or have created successful businesses, often against the odds and despite immense challenges or, like Myrtle Sambaba, they do wonderful work and for no reward. M
yrtle, a 65 year old pint-sized angel, has lived in neighbouring Mamre all her life but drives through to Darling every weekday with Inspector Stephanie to work at the SPCA Kennels just outside of Town. She has been doing this for six years, willingly and lovingly, and only recently for remuneration. Having been made redundant several years ago, she decided that sitting at home doing nothing was not for her, so she began by helping the PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals) with their mobile clinics. She later joined the SPCA team where she does whatever is needed including cleaning, washing and feeding of animals, walking of dogs and much more. She was out there helping with the sterilisation projects, and reels off the statistics like the pro she is – 1270 dogs which have undergone operations, as many as 50 animals a day. But her really invaluable role is giving love and confidence back to those poor severely distressed animals, some of whom have never heard a kind word or experienced a caring action; one of the SPCA ladies told us, in awe, that “Myrtle is like a dog-whisperer”.
THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING
Diere bring rustigheid in haar lewe.

’n Tragedie in sy spore gestuit CIA Fotokompetisiewenner Gewapende reaksiebeamptes voorkom brand in Yzerfontein-huis

Ek draai my kamera instinktief in die rigting van my mede-Caminos.

JACK CARTER AND THE SAD CHAMPAGNE Boytjie Basson continues his travels down memory lane, taking us back to his experiences as a young man in the ’80s... ARTICLE BOYTJIE BASSON | PHOTO MARIAAN HEYNS
W
e were now in our twenties, young men having just completed our two years compulsory National Service and starting our working careers. Our grandparents had moved into old age homes. Yzerfontein was starting to develop quite fast and the boom we are witnessing today was approaching. The streets in the new developments behind Villa Fontana and the first phase of Pearl Bay was all named after the first generation of Yzerfonteiners. People that I knew from my first memories and whose faces I can still clearly picture today. Surnames like Basson, Katz, Versfeld, Duckitt, De Villiers, De Jongh, Carter, Gey van Pittius, Smit and Sauerman... The pioneers of Yzerfontein.
Jack Carter, one of the first-generation Yzerfonteiners, is one of the men that streets in Yzerfontein were named after. Jack Carter settled in Beach Road in Yzerfontein as a widower in the late ’60s after his wife passed away a few years earlier. He had owned a General Dealer store in Darling and when he moved to Yzerfontein he sold his house opposite the Commercial Hotel to Hyman Becker, who then owned the Hotel. When Darling got its water and flush toilets, Jack Carter was one of the first people to upgrade his bathroom in order to install a flush toilet. Back then the buckets of the old pit toilets, which were erected a few metres away from the main house, were changed every fortnight late at night when residents were asleep by the nagwa or jamwa (night wagon / jam wagon), also known as “Ben Hur” to us. The nagwa crew used paraffin lanterns for light and the wagon was pulled by four horses. Those old pit toilets were very inconvenient to use at night, especially during the cold and wet winter ones! That’s why Jack Carter was extremely proud of his new toilet and boasted to all who would listen just how wonderful and modern it was, and that it was so very convenient as he only had to pull a chain every second week. The habit of changing the buckets in the old pit toilets only once every fortnight was a difficult habit for Jack Carter 18 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING
to break. After Jack Carter’s wife had passed away, he would visit his sister-in-law (a spinster) in Sea Point over weekends whenever he had the chance. At the time Hyman Becker had also been courting his future wife, Rosebeth, for a few years, and also travelled to Cape Town every weekend to visit her. Eventually it came to be that Hyman Becker would give Jack Carter a lift on weekends from Darling to Sea Point and back. One Friday afternoon Hyman Becker had a bottle of champagne with him when he picked Jack Carter up. On noticing the bottle of champagne, Jack Carter wanted to know what it was for. Hyman Becker explained to him that he thought the time was right to propose to Rosebeth and that if she accepted his proposal, they would celebrate the occasion with a glass of champagne. Jack Carter thought this was a great idea and immediately insisted on a bottle of champagne too, as he also wanted to propose to his sisterin-law that weekend. When Hyman Becker picked Jack Carter up later that Sunday at his sister-in-law’s Sea Point flat, he asked him how the champagne tasted. A dejected Jack Carter replied: “I am taking mine home again”. His sister-in-law did not accept his marriage proposal. Jack moved to Yzerfontein where he lived on Beach Road and remained a bachelor until his last days. At the beginning of this era the daily gathering point for all locals and holidaymakers was at the harbour from late afternoon until sunset. Most locals had small boats (bakkies) and we used to set crayfish rings all around the harbour area and alongside the harbour wall. The old metal rectangular crayfish traps were now outlawed and quotas introduced. The harbour was the place where stories were told, new friendships made and where a few drinks were enjoyed at sunset. Unfortunately this came to an end when work was done on the harbour wall and a new slipway was built in 1986, causing the crayfish to disappear for a few years. For the first time Yzerfontein also got its own Sea Fisheries inspector, a man by the name of Andre Stander. We were now being watched and trying to outwit the inspector was an ongoing challenge for us, having had free use of the sea and its resources for as long as we could remember. Now this outsider wanted to come and tell us how many, what size, and what species of seafood we could harvest. No one liked Andre Stander. He was nothing like his namesake, the notorious former policeman turned bank robber who we all admired despite him being a crook. So when we returned from Dassen Island with just a few perlemoen for the pot

and saw that his patrol vehicle was parked at the harbour, we would land at the main beach and run the few metres to our house on Beach Road with the perlemoen to be cooked for supper. Other times we would drop the perlemoen in a bag close to the harbour wall and later that afternoon would go back and “legally dive for it from the shore. Andre Stander could never figure out why we were the only people ever to find perlemoen in the harbour. The first permitted divers operating from Yzerfontein were John Fuchs and Brian Clarke, a Springbok spearfisherman. After them followed Roberts who used to launch from Yzerfontein main beach and harvest perlemoen and crayfish at Dassen Island. When he retired, his place was taken by another perlemoen diver called Van van der Merwe. He was a plumpish man with big cheeks, a red face and ginger hair. After a long day’s diving at the Island, his face and his hair would be almost the same colour. His nose was permanently scarred by the harsh sun. Van van der Merwe did not launch from the main beach, launching from the harbour instead. He did not drink at sea, but once ashore, he made up for time lost at sea. It was almost as if spending his whole day in the salty waters of the Atlantic Ocean made Van van der Merwe very thirsty. He would visit my parents regularly after returning from Dassen Island and would supply us with crayfish and perlemoen (as well as treasure that he
dived from shipwrecks at the Island) in return for a drink. The treasure could include porcelain crockery, silver cutlery and coins, some of which I still have today. Van van der Merwe knew every wreck off Dassen Island. And on the very few days during the year that the weather was perfect for diving on the western side of the island, he would dive for treasure on the wrecks. He also had a habit of loading all the perlemoen that he dived that day into the boot of his Valiant car, which was rusted beyond repair. On the days that Van van der Merwe did not visit my parents on his return from the Island, he would drive through to Cape Town where he would sell the fresh perlemoen, still in its shell, to restaurant owners. j

Met so bekostigbare tarief.

FEEDBACK
@DARLING GREEN ESTATE LAUNCH The @Darling Green Estate launch on the 15th of February 2019 was a resounding success with more than a 100 people attending the event. With 25 stands already having been sold, 5 stands were sold at the launch. The launch special of the first 10 stands at R345,000 (list price of R395,000) still stands. j

INKUNI CRAFTS Inkuni Crafts was established four years ago after what started out as a request from a friend to make a small timber box. ARTICLE | PHOTOS FRIKKIE VAN SCHALKWYK
F
rom a family carpentry background, Frikkie van Schalkwyk started experimenting with various timber items. Since then, a huge range of timber products, including outdoor and indoor furniture, has seen the light of day. He specializes in dining room tables, television units, kitchen cupboards, butchers’ blocks, book shelves, kists and a variety of decorative timber items. Frikkie believes in sustaining and protecting our natural resources and the environment. Only reclaimed timber is used for all the products. An interesting side of the business for Frikkie is to be innovative in designing his own creations with the volume of timber available. A large part of the range is based on original antique methods of manufacturing furniture eg using wire mesh in door frames, installing simple opening and closing mechanisms, and utilizing paint techniques of old. The versatility of Inkuni Crafts allows you to mix and match the old with the modern, as well as to play around with
colours. His furniture is ideal for holiday houses, braai rooms and for young couples starting out, or families scaling down. Apart from his own designs, he custom manufactures any item to the client’s requirements and finishes. He has noticed that the trend is leaning more to compact and slim line furniture, especially with modern town houses and complexes where space is limited. Colours have also become popular and important - gone are the days when everything in a room is of the same shade. A bright red chair or cobalt blue table can become the focal point in a room. Clients include furniture shops, guest houses and decorators. He also enjoys huge support from the West Coast community. Frikkie handles his own marketing and sales. He attends big expos, markets, and has a permanent stall at Market at the Barn, off the R302, outside of Durbanville. There a wide range of products may be viewed. An amusing experience which he recounts was when a customer made an enquiry asking which was the most expensive item at a market. After pointing out the item, she commented that her husband would be paying for it as he had been out of line the previous evening and needed to treat her in order to be forgiven. So guys be warned! Inkuni Crafts is client orientated and constantly strives to provide quality rustic-finished products at affordable prices. Visit Frikkie’s facebook page for updates of new products, up-coming events and markets. j

Welcome to @Darling Green Estate. Located in Darling, Western Cape - this is a one of a kind green development, situated within the Swartland District municipality, which was voted the last 2 years running as the greenest district municipality in the Western Cape. ARTICLE RALPH RABIE | PROJECT MANAGER OF @DARLING GREEN ESTATE
T
he development consists of 139 residential stands: 9 - 1ha, 13 - ½ ha, 67 - 1,200m² erven, 50 - 900m² erven, 250 retirement homes and 110 mountain biker units. Owners have 3 years in which to build their homes, should they not wish to build directly with the developer. Pricing of stands are as follows: 1ha - R995,000, ½ ha - R695,000, 1,200m² - R495,000 and 900m² - R395,000. Building packages are also on offer and estimated to sell at R9,950/m². @Darling Green will truly be a fully-fledged green estate. All homes will be required to install solar on their roofs. The developer, in conjunction with Genesis Eco-energy, will install a fully operational solar system on each home’s roof. This will be at no cost to the owner. Rain water will be harvested and recycling will be promoted. Recycling of waste will also be encouraged and the developer is also investigating a grey water system that will feed off the sports club’s excess grey water. The first phase successfully launched on the 15th of February at Darling Brew. Phase 1 consists of the 9 - 1ha stands, 13 - ½ ha, 36 - 1,200m² and 20 - 900m² stands. The developer announced an opening special on the launch day: The first 10 - 900m² stands have been reduced form R395,000 to R345,000. This is an awesome entry price to be able to secure a spot in @Darling Green Estate. Phase 1 is selling fast, with 25 stands already sold. 5 stands were sold on the day of the launch. The installation of the services will commence by midyear. Construction should start before the end of 2019. Every owner will become a member of the Homeowners Association. This will include conforming to the architectural guidelines. The estate is located adjacent to the Darling Sports club, which includes a 9-hole golf course, bowling facilities and a tennis court, with direct access from the Estate. Every owner will have membership to the Sports club, which will be included in the levy.
Darling College (a private school from grade RR - 7) is walking distance from the Estate. A daily school bus runs to Malmesbury and Curro in Langebaan. A bus to Melkbosstrand, also with a private school, will be operational once the development commences. Security is crucial - the estate will be fully fenced, with smart security access control, cameras and monitoring. Levies are estimated at R950/month, which will include membership to the Sports club (all facilities), 24 hour security at the gate house, access control, common property maintenance and gardening and maintenance of running/ cycling routes on the extended adjacent properties. Darling and surrounds is a mountain biking mecca. @Darling Green Estate, in conjunction with World Sport, are putting Darling on the map to form part of the “big four” cycling locations in the Western Cape, closing the loop of Durbanville, Paarl and Wellington. This will create in excess of 500km of mountain biking track. Owners in @Darling Green Estate will have access to the rest of the 500 hectare property adjoining the estate, for mountain biking, fishing, horse riding and walking. The wetland that forms part of the property, is a sensitive ecological area where no development may take place. A bird hide will also be constructed. Furthermore, the estate will be fibre ready. Pets are allowed on the property which includes up to four horses on a 1ha stand and two horses on ½ ha stands. @Darling Green Estate is ideally situated out of the busy hustle and bustle of the city. Distances to @Darling Green Estate from Yzerfontein is just 25km, 40 km from Malmesbury (hospital) and just 80km from Cape Town international airport and the City Centre. j

NATURE
Nature offers so much and it is our responsibility to conserve the unique natural heritage resources of the Western Cape for the benefit of future generations. ARTICLE CAPE NATURE
N
ature works like a natural factory to provide us with clean, fresh water and other natural ecosystem services. Water travels all the way from our majestic mountains, through rivers, wetlands and dams before it comes out of your tap. All trash ends up in our water ways and the ocean and has a severe impact on the natural environment. The process starts with each one of us – reduce your consumption of disposable items, re-use and recycle plastic, glass, tin and paper. Start in your own home, a recycling or litter prevention project at your school or initiate a project in your community. Our future depends on it and that is why CapeNature developed the #DontBeTrashy campaign to address littering behavior in the Western Cape. With digital, broadcast and clean-up activations, the campaign aims to involve business, NGOs, government, schools and civic groups in an effort to spread awareness. With the scale of this problem we want to change the behavior of individuals and communities. Here’s how you can help: • Join the #Don’tBeTrashy Movement • Tell your friends and family • Share the message on all your social media platforms • Be a #DontBeTrashy ambassador Register your Own Clean-up: • Sign up to host your own #DontBeTrashy clean-up on www.capenature.co.za • Receive a clean up toolkit, including checklists and bags • Share your photos and the weight of litter collected with the hashtag #DontBeTrashy and tag @CapeNature. Co-brand: • Commit to several self-funded activations • Promote thecampaign & CapeNature as a media partner • Fund co-branded material (bags, stickers, artwork) j

WINE
SNIPS AND SIPS
ARTICLE | PHOTOS CHARLES WITHINGTON | THE DARLING WINE SHOP
A fortnight ago, I approached the Darling winemakers asking for their initial sentiments on the harvest and received some both interesting and amusing comments.
I
have had some most interesting, and some very amusing comments, (more and more I realise that the DNA of Darling encompasses the ability to see the laugh in anything). Some interim comments... “Early white grapes/wines looking very good. Great acidity and freshness. Still too early for red”. AND: “The dry land bush vines are on par as per tons with the 2018 vintage. I do think there are more flavours so in short a better quality year. Challenge for 2019 is the power cuts. I am nursing a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc with a slow fermentation and this is a temp sensitive process. So as soon as the power went on I was ready to start the coolers. My wife thought I had a skelmpie in the cellar getting up in the middle of the night.” Talking about vines and wines – so often we read of the “young guns” in wine making who are making an impact on both our wines and our image, in international markets. They are indeed, but just as much difference is being made by some of the young gun viticulturalists who are doing much in their strive to ensure the best fruit possible, and without which, no great wine would see the light of day.
Meet JACO ENGELBRECHT a “new” generation viticulturalist (he surfs too!!) with a 3D approach – Dynamic, Driven, Detail. Founder of Visual Viticulture, he talks about vines in language we can understand, with pics that we can relate to and managing to make it all so interesting. Visit www.visualviticulture.co.za to see what he has to say. Having worked in Darling for 4 years he has a very good overview of the vineyards, so who better to ask for comment 32 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING
on the general state of the harvest. “For the fourth year in a row we are faced with another very dry growing season in the Cape Winelands, and this year it is starting to show.” Although some vineyards are back on par this year, mainly due to fuller dams and more boreholes, this is not a sustainable way to farm. The dryland vineyards are really struggling, especially the old vineyards, contrary to popular belief. In the Paarl and Swartland regions it is a particularly light Cinsaut crop, with little to no answers as to why, with odd climate patterns as the only answer. Varieties that still thrive in this climate, although things are quite tough, is Chenin blanc, Pinotage, Grenache noir and Grenache blanc. Stellenbosch seems to have a medium to good crop, with the younger, leafroll virus free vineyards really coming through in yield and quality. The older, leafroll ridden vineyards are suffering, maybe a hint that their era is over, and the drive to “clean” vineyards and the economic sustainability of these vineyards, becoming more evident. The cooler regions like Elgin really seem to enjoy these rather “drier” summers, with less vigour in these vineyards leaning them to even greater quality. The Pinot Noirs are really good, with the Sauvignon blancs and Chardonnays also showing great potential. The only thing that really hit home this year, is soil health and organic matter in the soils. Vineyards, where a drive towards healthier soils, with composting and better microbe management, are at the forefront of the battle and really performed well in these difficult years - just ask Johann Reyneke of Reyneke Wines in Stellenbosch. To adapt in this difficult climatic environment, we must focus on healthy, leafroll virus free vineyards, with well
WINE buffered soils, less and less chemicals and proper cover crop strategies, because without soils, the only drink we will enjoy in future is desalinated sea water...“ CELEBRATING CIVILISATION A very smart publication was launched in Hong Kong a few weeks ago celebrating Chinese cuisine worldwide. Visually stunning food and restaurant pictures, (including a pic of the front of the Darling Wine Shop!), the author’s introduction provides some food for thought “...This book celebrates
those chefs and restaurants who regard themselves as custodians of great tradition. They are not afraid to be creative but anchor that creativity on solid foundations rooted in traditional cuisine. Cuisine, culture and civilisation are inseparable.”
STATISTIC OF THE MONTH - SPOILT FOR CHOICE Wine Searcher lists 61 865 “registered” producers world wide – in other words those who have a brand and are on the market. If each produces 5 wines in their range that is 300 000 labels to choose from... Think of ANY other food product that even comes near this. Incidentally, in South Africa we have 980 producers listed. j
WINE OF THE MONTH Darling Cellars Old Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2017 – one of the most accoladed Darling white wines of this vintage. Not much around so keep for special occasion!
So taking the above, cast your eyes over to France, Italy or Spain where the family gathering around the table at mealtimes is the absolute norm, day in and day out, plus of course, some good wine to enhance the experience. Compare this to first world Britain where recent research (Mintel) showed that in the UK 80% of the population owns a microwave oven whilst in Italy it is only 27%. Sales of readymade meals in the UK accounted for 42% of all sales last year, way ahead of France with 21%, Germany (20%), Italy (9%), and Spain (7%).

ARTIKEL NADINE PRETORIUS
D
Soos byvoorbeeld (my gunsteling) - die skool Whatsapp-groepies!
“It’s been real!” of “Tot weersiens!” sal voldoende wees. Stuur jou kommunikasie as een boodskap. “Ek en my man sal daar wees.” of “Pretorius x 5” is voldoende.
‘n Blommetjie, ‘thumbs-up’ of glimlag tel ook hier.

In ander woorde: “use it or lose it”! HOEKOM LEEF SOMMIGES LANGER?
36 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING
VERMY DIE SLAGGATE Vermy ’n “handdoek-ingooi” gesindheid: een wat steun op verstokte idees, in ’n groef wees of ’n houding van “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” het.

(As daar baie tandvleis wys wanneer iemand glimlag.)
• • • • • •
Strabisme.
VULLERS
THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

Your 10 year old needs a car seat to survive a crash #CarseatFullstop is reminding families that every child under 1.5m tall, between 10 and 12 years old, needs to be in a car seat to survive a crash. South Africa has some of the most dangerous roads in the world. It was said at the 2018 ITF Summit that Africa has 2% of the world’s cars but 20% of road deaths. A car seat reduces the risk of your child dying by up to 71% and reduces the need for hospitalisation by 69%.
W
hile many families realise that children need car seats up to the age of around 4, there is a dramatic fall in awareness thereafter. Your child needs three different car seats in their lifetime. An infant seat that should be used up to 13kg or 75cm, specially designed to hold and protect your baby at their most vulnerable. A toddler seat, with a 5-point harness, up to 18kg or 105cm (there are 4 seats in South Africa that go to 25kg or 115cm). And finally, a full back booster seat, with special guides to keep the car’s seatbelt flat and smooth diagonally across the chest, midway between the shoulder and neck, and low over the upper thighs or pelvis. These seats should be used until your child is 1.5m tall (between 10 and 12 years old on average). Each seat is designed to protect a child in a specific stage of development. You can find the maximum weight and, sometimes, height, on the orange sticker on the shell of the car seat. Crash dynamics don’t discriminate. If you are in a car, you are subject to all the forces of a crash. For context, when a car crashes or suddenly stops, your weight is multiplied by the speed you were traveling. A seat belt is designed to fit an adult male of 1.5m or taller. As an adult, the seat belt catches you and all that weight and distributes the crash force to the strongest points of your body – across
your shoulder, diagonally across your chest and across your pelvis. So, let’s look at that in terms of a 15kg child in a car travelling at 60km/h. Someone jumps a stop street and you slam on brakes to avoid hitting them. In that moment, your child weighs 900kgs. If your child is not restrained in any way, that 900kg is going to be projected through your car and, in all likelihood, ejected through one of the windows. An emergency responder from a recent Ford Driving Skills for Life event shared that if they see a car seat or a “Baby on Board” sign on the car, they instantly call in the dog squad. Children are found as far as 150m away from the car. 75% of children ejected will not survive; and those that do are usually handicapped for life. If a child under 1.5m tall is using the car’s seat belt, without the support of a full back, seat belt positioning booster seat, where does the seat belt sit? Remember, the seat belt by design distributes the full force of the crash… in the case of a child, to their underdeveloped neck and unprotected belly. A child’s body is only finished developing, with their organs safely protected by the ribcage once they are older. Seat belt syndrome is a very scary reality. In addition to positioning the seat belt safely, the full back provides side impact protection and support for the head and neck. A full back booster is so important because it protects your child from

the seat belt and from the forces and debris of a crash. For your child to be completely ready to use the car’s seat belt without the assistance of a booster seat, they need to be able to meet all the criteria of a 5 step test: 1. Can they sit with their back against back rest and legs flat on the seat? 2. Do their knees bend over edge of car’s seat, and their feet rest flat on the floor? 3. Does the shoulder belt sit smooth and diagonal across the chest, between neck and shoulder? 4. Does the lap belt sit low across the thighs or pelvis, away from belly? 5. Can they remain comfortably seated in the above position for the whole trip? Ensuring your child is properly secured in the right seat for their weight, height and stage of development and that the seat is properly installed in your car; is the difference between life and death. Transport deaths are one of the leading causes of non-natural deaths of children in our country. An AA study says that only 7% of children in private cars who need car seats to survive a crash are in car seats. With 93% of our children not in car seats, we all know somebody who isn’t strapping their child in... One share, seen by one parent, who straps in one child, saves a life. #CarseatFullstop. RABIES: THE BOTTOM LINE Rabies is a fatal viral disease that can affect both man and animals. The World Health Organisation estimates that Rabies results in the deaths of as many as 50 000 people worldwide annually, with most of these fatalities in India. ARTICLE DR DONNA BROOK | TAH ANIMAL HOSPITAL & VET SHOP
42 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING
To positively identify a case of rabies, the brain of the affected animal has to be tested. If a wild or stray animal that has bitten someone is suspected of having rabies, it is generally therefore euthanazed to confirm diagnosis as early as possible. The patient can be saved if the disease is treated quickly with vaccinations and/ or rabies antibodies before the virus reaches the brain. If a pet shows behavioral changes and is suspected of having Rabies, it may be quarantined for observation for 10-14 days to see if the disease develops. Luckily there is a highly effective and inexpensive vaccine that will protect your pet against Rabies and ensure that in the unlikely event that it may come into contact with a rabid animal, your family will be safe too. Legislation requires that all dogs and cats in South Africa be vaccinated twice in their first year of life and then once every three years thereafter. Should your pet be bitten by a wild animal or should you encounter a stray or wild animal which bites you and appears to be behaving in an abnormal manner, you should take the following steps: • If the animal is dead or if you are able to SAFELY secure it in a container for transport without further injury to yourself, please bring it to one of our branches as soon as possible. We will examine it and if necessary take steps to have it tested by the State Veterinarian at no charge to yourself. • Human anti-rabies vaccines are readily available at doctor’s rooms or pharmacy clinics. If you work frequently with stray pets or animals without a known vaccine history, for example Animal welfare volunteer, then you should preferably be vaccinated against Rabies as a preventative measure. Otherwise, if you are bitten by an animal with no vaccination history, it is safer to be vaccinated yourself as soon as possible after the bite. In summary, although Rabies is a rare disease in the Western Cape, it does occur here. Always keep your pets’ vaccines up to date, be cautious when dealing with stray or wild animals that appear to be acting abnormally and have yourself vaccinated as a precaution if you are bitten. j

H
owever, Rabies also occurs throughout South Africa and is responsible for up to 30 human deaths a year in this country. Although the disease is more prevalent in the Eastern half of South Africa, most notably in Kwazulu-Natal, it does occur sporadically in the Western Cape. Local cases are usually identified in wild animals, most notably the mongoose and bat-eared fox. However, there have been a number of recent cases identified amongst feral cats in the Malmesbury district. Rabies is usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. The saliva contains the virus, which is then transmitted during the bite. Rabies can also be transmitted if the saliva of an infected animal comes into contact with an open wound or the mucosal surfaces (such as the inside of the mouth) of the victim. The virus then moves along the nerves to the brain and the salivary glands. This incubation period is usually a few weeks but may be as long as 4 months depending on the location and severity of the bite. Once the virus reaches the brain, the disease becomes symptomatic and is then almost always fatal, with death occurring less than 10 days after the onset of clinical signs. Clinical symptoms of the disease manifest as behavioral changes. Rabies is often divided into two syndromes, which are differentiated as follows: • Excitive (furious) form- aggression, restless, excitability, light sensitivity, erratic behaviour. • Paralytic (dumb) form- paralysis, uncoordinated movements, disorientation, salivation, inability to swallow, dropped jaw, excessive vocalization, excessive tameness in wild animals or affection in pets. Sometimes these forms can overlap or develop at different stages of the disease. It is therefore important to remember that the sudden onset of unusual behaviour by an animal, particularly if it has not been vaccinated, should always alert one to the possibility of Rabies. There are also other diseases which can cause similar symptoms, such as Distemper in the dog. At the moment, we have a severe Distemper epidemic in the Cape. However, if your pet is fully vaccinated, it should be protected against both Distemper and Rabies. While any animal (including buck, horses, cattle, pigs and sheep) can be infected with rabies, it is most often transmitted by animals capable of passing on the disease through a bite wound, such as a dog, cat, fox or mongoose. Of all the positively identified rabies cases in South Africa, 37% were dogs and 27% were mongooses.

New Heritage Centre launched at !Khwa ttu Just outside Yzerfontein lies a destination that should be on every visitor’s itinerary. Those who stop and stay here for long enough to discover the teachings available at this unique place, leave forever changed. For this is !Khwa ttu: a place of learning and sharing, co-owned and run, for, and by, the San. ARTICLE & PHOTOS !KHWA TTU PR
T
he San here welcome visitors. Their quiet pride in sharing their culture is inspiring and, of course, poignant. These are First People, experts say THE First People, overwhelmingly researched, then left to their plight, marginalised, impoverished and ignored. In 1999 WIMSA, the overarching advocacy group of the San, partnered with Ubuntu Foundation, a Swiss non-profit foundation, to help address the problems of the San. !Khwa ttu is the result of that partnership. The focus here is on providing training and adult education - including skills in tourism, entrepreneurship, environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihoods - for rotating groups of the San youth. As part of the skills training they offer, the management of !Khwa ttu has taken a derelict farm and turned it into the most inspiring destination for visitors. In the 20 years they’ve been here, together with the trainees, they’ve rehabilitated the land, re-wilding it with eland, zebra and various other animals, laid hiking and mountain-bike trails, established an excellent restaurant and developed an array of delightful accommodation options. The next and the newest phase in !Khwa ttu’s development was launched on Heritage Day, last year, and will serve !Khwa ttu’s mission of cultural restitution. A vast quantity of scholarship has been carried out on the San; very little has ever been made available to the subjects of that research and the !Khwa ttu Heritage Centre seeks to address that.

An astonishing architectural structure, the Heritage Centre is embedded into land lines of the ridge looking towards Yzerfontein and the Atlantic Ocean. In a short time, the surrounding indigenous vegetation has covered the curved roof, which represents a shelter where people gather to learn and to share. With its immersive, multimedia “ostrich egg” room, digital archive, partly cantilevered roof, geothermal cooling and heating, and essentially contemporary architecture, the Heritage Centre depicts old wisdom combining with new technology, for a sustainable future. It addresses the hopes and dreams of San all over Southern Africa: it is a place to tell their story in ways of their choosing, a place of dignity where their voices can be heard and the past can be remembered for a better future; a place to tell you who the San are. “The !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre is a great deal more than a collection of artefacts and historical photos. It’s a pioneering initiative that embraces the principle of community curation, led by San consultants from across Southern Africa and academics. The exhibitions, San-led trails and guided experiences are designed to engage the body and senses as much as the mind,” explains Joram / Useb, guide and trainer of !Khwa ttu. “They demonstrate the skills and knowledge of the San people, whilst also telling the archaeological story of the origins of the modern mind on the Southern African coastline.” It is imperative that !Khwa ttu becomes self-sustaining. You can help. Donations are received with great appreciation and stretched further than you can imagine. Alternatively book a few nights in one of the beautifully appointed cottages, furnished entirely appropriately with elegant simplicity - or the rustic-luxury tented camp; reserve a table at the excellent restaurant and afterwards buy a swathe of exquisite fabric, art, books or unique crafts from the shop. Whatever you do, don’t miss a tour with a San guide. There is a wonderful tea ceremony, and click-punctuated story-telling; you can also discover The Way of the San, including how to track animals. Bring your bikes, or hire one - there are beautifully laid-out mountain-bike and hiking trails... What will stay with you for as long as you live is the shift you experience as you explore the exhibition spaces in the beautifully renovated farm buildings and the new Heritage Centre, here the reality of cruelty and intrinsic revelation are

Some key exhibitions have been designed to be replicated and mobile, so in time they will be set up in !Khwa ttu’s satellite outposts in remote San villages. Whether you are a visitor to the Cape, or a local, whether you are looking for a solitary retreat, or a hiking/mountain-biking weekend with friends or your family, a visit to !Khwa ttu will be profoundly affecting. WHAT , WHEN, WHERE , HOW ACRYLIC AND OIL PAINT, WOOD
y way of this playful approach Daehnke engages in this exhibition with the idea of ‘common sense’, or indeed the strangeness of such an idea, that there exists a sense that is seen as commonly shared by all. The artist explores this idea in relation to social conventions, language, text and, especially, visual and artistic conventions. As such, artworks peel off the wall, right angles morph and warp into random shapes, and surfaces shine, corrode or distort. Many of the works are paintings on a tiny scale, painted on thick cotton-rag board and mounted on wood surfaces that curve off the wall. The wood is sculpted into facets so that the surfaces of the artworks at times recede at an angle, stand proud, or slope off. This play with artistic conventions is picked up with references to paint-by-numbers, tracing and ‘how to draw’ exercises – all common ways of creating images, however in the ‘Fine Art’ tradition these ways of making images are considered ‘hobby art’ at best, or only ever used ironically. In this exhibition these ‘hobby art’ exercises sit alongside drawn and painted images executed in line with more conventional high art expectations, which make for a tong-in-cheek juxtaposition of the ways in which images are created and how these are perceived in a ‘Fine Art’ gallery.
If this points to how expectations shape the way art is perceived in different contexts, then this theme is also picked up in terms of wider social expectations. IQ tests, references to the ‘how what why when’ questions that underpin journalism, and the use of colours promoted as ‘universal’ (specifically ‘International Orange’, a colour used throughout the world as the safety colour in aviation) all gently tease about a hope, or is it a dream, of being able to find stability. Daehnke states: “I have always been obsessed with this dream of stability and fixity – the longing for something that is not contingent – and yet find great amusement in how, in a post-Positivist world, we acknowledge the futility of this, but still cannot help but to speak in universal terms.” The idea of a ‘common sense’ is perhaps most evident in our everyday use of language, and the exhibition picks up on this through the inclusion of text. In one work the word ‘OUR’ displays just how pregnant with meaning this word is once it is stripped of other qualifying words and displaced onto a somewhat quizzical sculptural shape. The reference to a sketchbook in the title of the exhibition refers to how the artist conceived of the works on display, with all the unselfconscious play and experimentation that a sketchbook encourages. The notion of books is, however, also a wider theme that runs through the exhibition. Many of the images used in the exhibition originated from different encyclopaedias. Furthermore, the notion of an encyclopaedia – a book that, in theory at least, contains all knowledge and thus delimits the world – was a starting point for many of the works on exhibition, as for much of the artist’s previous work. Whilst Wikipedia is the encyclopaedia of today, dusty shelves filled with thick tomes continue to serve as backdrops in libraries and private homes, and it is precisely the irrelevance and demise of the physical encyclopaedia that intrigues the artist. These defunct tome-filled shelves seem an apt metaphor for the futility of searching for what is common in our sense. The exhibition runs until 28 April. j

DARLING BREW TAKES MOUNTAIN BIKING TO THE EXTREME ARTICLE KIM VAN NIEKERK PHOTOS COURTESY OF DARLING BREW
The Darling Brew Extreme mountain bike challenge returns for the sixth consecutive year on Saturday, 25 May 2019. One of the most anticipated singleday races in the Western Cape, DBX19 takes place in Darling with all four routes beginning and ending at Darling Brew.
E
ntrants can choose their challenge, with routes ranging from the scenic 15km ‘Slow Beer’ in and around the quaint town of Darling to the super endurance 80km ‘Bone Crusher’ which follows cattle trails, jeep tracks and farm roads to take you through vineyards, olive groves and fynbos trails. An exciting new addition to Darling Brew Extreme this year is the Pixie Dust Duathlon. Limited to 100 riders, this ride (25kms), run (12kms) ride (25kms) will be a first for DBX and the organisers are looking forward to people’s response to it. DBX19 truly has something for everyone, from experienced MTB enthusiasts to novices and youngsters. Event hosts, Darling Brew, together with event sponsors Retail Capital, offer riders and spectators a day to remember with family-friendly surroundings at the Brewery, live music and local produce as well as a chance to taste their wide range of locally brewed craft beer. In operation since 2010, Darling Brew is one of South Africa’s first well-established and award-winning microbreweries, as well as Africa’s first carbon neutral brewery. They brew a wide range of premium specialty beers - including traditional lagers, ales, oat ales, pale ales, IPA’s, wheat beers and exotic darks - that are loved for their flavour, quality ingredients and brewing process. Each DBX route is named after one of Darling Brew’s quaffable beers.
Designed with experienced MTB riders in mind, the challenging 80km ‘Bone Crusher’ route is 10km longer than 2018 and will have you climbing from the start. The first half is full of hills, with the biggest hill of the day rewarding participants with a spectacular view of Darling and Table Mountain in the distance. A fast and steep descent follows, with cattle trails and a challenging MX single track. The classic 50km ‘Long Claw’ route shows riders the breath-taking scenery on the far side of Darling with the 23km loop through Wolwefontein Farm incorporating single track, steep climbs, fast descents, switchback corners with berms and ramp-bridges. The 30km ‘Blood Serpent’ route requires a reasonable amount of fitness. It promises a decent work-out for riders who are not quite ready for the longer routes. Entrants will get to experience all the spectacular views without having to concentrate on single tracks. Returning for the second year, the popular 15km ‘Slow Beer’ route takes riders all around Darling. This short route is still mountain biking so be prepared for a bit of trail riding too. All riders are welcomed back to the Brewery with a cold Darling Brew beer at the finish line. Entries open on Friday, 1 March 2019. j

The Blue Ribbon Yzerfontein Cycle Experience returns to Yzerfontein with a new addition! Join us on Sunday the 9th of June and don’t miss the opportunity to RIDE or RUN in this truly wonderful event.
A
s with the previous three years, the cycle event will be complemented by an array of local stalls and entertainers, bringing a festival-like atmosphere to the town of Yzerfontein. Runners would be delighted to know that there is a new addition to the event this year. You can now enter a 5km or 10km run! Feedback from the previous race was incredibly positive, with the competitors enjoying the flat, fast, non-technical route. The veteran cyclists enjoyed the fast 78km training ride, and the less experienced , and more relaxed bunch took advantage of the 52km route, both routes being unique in that they are not open to the public, and run through the beautiful West Coast National Park. Starting from the main beach parking area in Yzerfontein, the MTB competitors will wind their way out of the town, onto the R315, and will turn off onto the Blombosch road which will take them into the West Coast National Park. The Park Manager, Pierre Nel, has generously approved a route which takes the cyclists on private jeep tracks through the splendid nature which the West Coast has to offer. On the return route there is a mixture of tar and jeep track which leads back to the finish line at the main beach, where competitors will receive a medal, a Coca Cola, and an exceptional Premier Goodie Bag. This is not just any race, we are uplifting the community, and proceeds will benefit the International Police Forum, the Jenna Lowe Trust and Reach for a Dream Foundation. All three beneficiaries will be available on the day to talk to interested parties about their organisations and the work they do.
