I LOVE YZER The Creative Issue

it was omtrent ‘n opwindende paar maande hier in die I Love Yzer kantoor. Weskus Groete! j

REASONS TO LOVE YZER:

Zanthè Seaton Designs has been operating in Yzerfontein for 17 years. I graduated as an Architectural Technologist, working first for a developer, then for a chain store, after that an Architectural company before starting my own practice full time. Over the past few years I have done well over 100 new houses, apart from numerous alterations, as well as the ongoing Strandveld Villas development run by Dennis and Graham Katz. I have become very busy and had to drag my father out of retirement to assist me! He is a retired, fully qualified Architect, so all my clients get his considerable experience as a bonus. Peter Pentz is tans ʼn tweedejaar BA Kommunikasiestudent by die NWUPuk. Twitter: @PeterPentz1 Instagram: @PeterPentz Blog: www.peterpentz.com Dr Rouxlene Sheridan is a veterinarian at Moorreesburg Animal Hospital, a branch of Tygerberg Animal Hospital. Apart from her veterinary degree, she also have a Master’s degree in Animal Science. She lives in Moorreesburg with her husband Paul, her son Henro as well as 2 potbellies, 3 dogs, 3 rabbits, 6 budgies and 4 pigeons. Andre Badenhorst is a Johannesburg based commercial photographer, who has won over 26 professional photography awards. His photos are some of the most recognizable images in the industry combining conceptuality with a mastery of light. As the driving force behind Black Frame Photography he has produced a portfolio of work that is equally as creative and bold as it is technical.

funksioneel fantasties

FUNKSIONEEL KREATIEF ARTIKEL PETER PENTZ FOTO’S ANDRÉ BADENHORST PRODUK FOTO’S SEAN BRAND

In Engels sê hulle a change is as good as a holiday. Dis waar my hart lê. Later het ek my hoërskooljare in Ellisras voltooi. Die Waterberge was AMAZING! 6

THE CREATIVE ISSUE 2016 j

Funksionele kuns is presies dít. Funksionele kuns.

I LOVE YZER DARLING

Hoe groot is funksionele kuns in Suid-Afrika?

My ma. Wat lê tans op jou bedkassie? ʼn Sketsboek waarin ek idees skets en neerskryf. Wat is nou op jou musiekspeellys? Rare Earth Watter boek lees jy tans? Richard Branson se Like a Virgin

Mooi so manne!

Yzerfontein Community Church SENT IN BY TRACEY DUCKITT

A

new gem has been growing in Yzerfontein since November last year – right under your nose! YCC was established by the Darling Presbyterian Church (DPC) in response to the need for an English speaking church in our seaside village. Our first service was on the 29th Nov 2015. DPC provides us with our spiritual and financial needs and our minister, Rev Rodney Brits, divides his time between the two communities, hence the reason for services every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. He has invited some interesting preachers to our pulpit and we are grateful for their time and Biblical knowledge in leading us closer to God. Our congregation has enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and has even brought a doggie along! She, “Sweetie-pie” was so well behaved, and we all enjoyed having her there! Our greatest challenge right now is to find musicians and singers who can lead our praise and worship sessions. If anyone can help in this regard, please contact Cobi on 022 451 2954 / 073 887 8028 / cobi@axxess.co.za or Loraine at lorainepretorius01@gmail.com / 083 7748153. We welcome all visitors and holiday-makers. Ons verwelkom almal om te kom kuier. Thanks & Blessings! j

ʼn STREWE NA LEWE

PROFILE

“Elke lewensfase in ʼn vrou se lewe bring nuwe uitdagings.” Stilbaai 2007, Mej. Brander 2001, en Mej. Bene 1995. “Alles was ongelooflik harde werk; niks het net in my skoot geval nie. So het my loopbaan as model afgeskop.” THE CREATIVE ISSUE 2016 j

“Hy is my beste vriend en my groot liefde.” Anita beskou haarself as ʼn plat-op-die-aarde persoon.

En ’n man – dié man – ontmoet. Hy glo in my en stook my kreatiewe vuur.”

REPORT BACK

Weersiens na 40 Jaar en meer

ARTIKEL JORINA ROETS (DE CLERK). BYDRAES & FOTO’S HETTIE GERBER (LOUBSER), ADA LOUW (COETZEE), MONTY BREYTENBACH, WILLEMIEN WINDELL (BRINK), JUANITA VAN DER MERWE.

D

Hekkie Breytenbach wat 17 jaar lank by die Darling Skool betrokke was as skoolhoof).

the visual art on Saturday. Stallholders were also kept very busy during this time. During the music performances the audience clapped spontaneously and cheered as the dancers immersed themselves in the stories, living them out as if they were their own, with their Darlings dancing alongside them. The tent was full of surprises; tiny people in glass bottles were displayed on an old kitchen dresser, drawers of a filing cabinet revealed blown-up photographs, and slideshows and paintings were there for people to browse through while students enjoyed the stalls. With a last triumphant dance performance the programme came to an end, and tears flowed as everyone said their goodbyes. Now for the Darling Voorkamerfest on the first weekend of September! j

nd that is a wrap for another unique event, only in Darling! Initiator Wim Visser, together with Jur van de Lecq, brought this idea to Darling and once again it was a joy to all! From their first meeting with forty one Darling residents right up to their last goodbye, the students from Fontys University have astounded everyone with their amazing talents! If you did not attend this wonderful event let me tell you what you missed… On Friday we had an 18 x 12m tent filled with people. Speakers Michael Rangasamy, Ian Rosant, Jur van de Lecq, and the man behind the students, Jan Grolleman opened the floor. Shortly after, the students were each introduced by Jan. People then waited for the stage to be set and soon everything began. The first act directed by Esther was followed by Jamie and Famke’s songs, Bente’s music, Laura’s dance and Laurens and Myrna’s visual arts. Most of the people came back to see

JEWELLERY BY

ROGER

ARTICLE MARIJANNE VAN NIEUWENHOVEN PHOTO SILVER DUNE PHOTOGRAPHY

J

EWELLERY BY ROGER is popular in the Darling and Yzerfontein areas. Many people have become engaged or married with one of Roger’s creations. Many more have had jewellery designed, repaired and cleaned to look and feel like new. Roger also melts old jewellery to make new designs for those who would like something different. In 1993 Roger did work on consignment for Windhall & Holmes, a popular jewellery store in Claremont. After five years with them, he completed his trade test on 28 Aug 1998. He then began working for himself at a jewellery store in Durbanville. One of his most loyal clients, Maack and Martin, with a store in the Buitenverwachting vineyards, orders all her stock from Roger. Roger relocated to Darling in 2006 and set up his workshop, where all the magic happens. He is very attentive to the needs of his clients and will sit and discuss their tastes and desires, and then design a piece of jewellery according to the client’s specifications. He works with gold, silver, diamonds, as well as precious and semi-precious stones. Roger admits that being a goldsmith/jeweller is not as glamorous as it sounds, and involves hard work, concentration, dirty hands, filing and polishing of articles. However, the results are beautiful and shiny, and indeed, rewarding. Roger’s passion for creativity started at a very young age and when he got the chance to become an apprentice jeweller, he grabbed it with both hands. The main benefit of starting this way is that you earn while you learn. He advises anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in the jewellery trade, to find and apply for an apprenticeship where Darling possible. Every five years Roger is required to apply for a licence from the SADPMR (South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator), to be able to continue operating as a reliable and skilled jewellery maker. Feel free Call: 082 899 1844 to contact Roger for an 022 492 2211 appointment on 082 899 rogerp267@gmail.com 1844 or 022 492 2211. j

WESKUS VINTAGE

In November 2014 het ek my eerste werkswinkel gekry. Ander, goeie dae sal weer daarvoor opmaak.

his usually begins with the selection and purchase of a site taking into consideration both aspect and prospects. Many of the sites in Yzerfontein have beautiful views, either of the sea or alternatively of the farmlands. These are the steps required to be followed after purchase of a plot, or a house for alteration: yy Meeting with the clients & the design team. yy Determine the requirements of client. yy Draw sketch plans. yy Get approval from client and adjust plans if necessary. yy Finalize working drawings. yy Submit plans for Council approval (the client has to sign these off). We guarantee approval provided nothing illegal is requested. WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR DESIGNING A NEW HOME: When designing a new home we need the following information from a client in aiding them to accomplish the end result: yy Levels of the site. yy Copy of the title deeds (to determine the building lines of your plot). yy Client’s budget for the build. yy Size (sqm) of the home they want. yy Accommodation requirements. yy Style of home. We are then able to ascertain in what direction we are to go with the sketch plans.

Living in Yzerfontein we are also able to advise on the correct orientation of houses taking into consideration the views, winds and sunshine - all very important for a successful result, and realization of your dream home. ALTERATIONS: These can be very successfully handled to completely change an existing house into a “dream” home. One can make alterations to your home and give it a wonderful face lift so that it looks brand new as shown in the before and after photos. In our work we do our best and have had many great successes and happy clients. j

BONSAI:

ARTICLE HENRY PRIESTLEY PHOTO SILVER DUNE PHOTOGRAPHY

B

onsai is an ancient art form that dates back to the sixth century. It originated in China and was introduced to Japan through trade. It only started gaining popularity in the West after the Second World War. What makes Bonsai exceptional is that it involves working with a living organism which develops and changes as the seasons change. The word Bonsai literally means ‘artistic tree in a pot’. Different kinds of plant material can be used in the cultivation of Bonsai, such as vines, trees, shrubs and even some succulents. There are certain guidelines that have to be followed in order for it to be recognized as a Bonsai. The great thing about Bonsai is that you can use your own discretion and styling in creating your own Bonsai. Bonsai is an art form that can be enjoyed by young and old and it can be passed down from generation to generation. A Bonsai makes an exceptional gift for celebrating birth, wedding anniversaries or the memory of a loved one. I have been practicing the art form for approximately 6 years now and I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience during this time. Practicing the art of Bonsai can be beneficial in more than one way; for example it teaches you patience, appreciation for nature and it can even be used as additional therapy for stress, anxiety, depression, etc. Bonsai is a great option for people living in limited spaces or who do not have gardens. j

TAKING CARE OF WEST COAST ROCK ART

A

ARTICLE JANETTE DEACON PHOTOS SHAUN DUNN

fter a three-day course on the age of Southern African San rock paintings, where they are found, and what they mean, trainees at the !Khwa-ttu San Culture and Education Centre recently went to see the real thing at Elands Bay Cave. The 13 young men and women who come from San communities in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa are studying for a certificate at entry level in the hospitality and nature/culture guiding industries. Their own immediate ancestors may not have made rock paintings or engravings, but fortunately the beliefs of several language groups in the Northern Cape and Kalahari were recorded within the past 150 years. This information has been invaluable for interpreting commonly illustrated images of animals and people in rock art. The animal that is most often found in both paintings and engravings is the eland, because it was believed to be the favourite animal of God and the spirit world. The trainees learned how to grind red and yellow ochre, white clay and charcoal into powder. They mixed these pigments with water, fat or egg to make paint. Then they traced images from photographs of rock paintings and used the paint to make accurate copies on paper. The exercise led to a greater appreciation of the finer details and sophistication of rock paintings that were made with great artistic skill throughout Southern Africa over the last 10,000 years. Although all rock art is protected by the National Heritage Resources Act (Act 25 of 1999), there are many people who are either ignorant of the law or who deliberately deface rock art. They write their names or scribble over rock paintings that were made thousands of years ago, damaging not only the paint, but also the integrity and authenticity of the site. This kind of damage often cannot be repaired. Imagine the dismay when the group arrived at Elands Bay Cave, a newly declared Provincial Heritage Site, to find that visitors had scribbled on the painted walls using charcoal from illegal fires on the cave floor. The original paintings form a dramatic array of scores of handprints made by putting red ochre paint on the hand and pressing it against the cave wall. The bodies of eland in a slightly lighter colour are believed by some people to have given the name to Elands Bay. The head, neck and legs were originally painted in white clay which has not bonded well with the rock and is no longer visible. 22

The group was fortunately accompanied by myself, having a permit from Heritage Western Cape to remove graffiti from Elands Bay Cave. I had brought equipment necessary to remove the charcoal, and demonstrated it to the trainees. The first task was to record the graffiti with photographs and sketches. Then the charcoal, still relatively fresh, could be carefully removed with cotton-wool wound around the ends of chopsticks and dampened with distilled water. For Josef Beregho, “This technique of graffiti removal is important because we do not want to destroy what was created by our forefathers. Everyone got to work and within twenty minutes the graffiti was gone. j 022 492 2998 j info@khwattu.org www.khwattu.org j R27 West Coast Road, Yzerfontein JANETTE DEACON was born in Cape Town in 1939. She became interested in Archaeology when she registered for a BA course taught by Professor A J H Goodwin at the University of Cape Town in 1958. After graduating in 1960, Janette worked as a research assistant to Professor W J Talbot in the Department of Geography at UCT in 1961, and in 1962 she was appointed as Junior Lecturer in the Department of Archaeology. From 1972 to 1975, Janette was appointed as a temporary lecturer in the UCT Department of Archaeology, and between 1976 and 1988 she worked as a researcher for various projects at the University of Stellenbosch. Her PhD, awarded in 1982, analysed Later Stone Age assemblages dating to the last 20 000 years from Nelson Bay Cave, Boomplaas Cave and Kangkara shelter, correlating the scale and timing of changes in stone artefact traditions with changes in various environmental parameters. She edited the South African Archaeological Bulletin from 1976 to 1993. In 1989, when Jalmar Rudner retired as Archaeologist at the National Monuments Council, Janette was appointed in his place and worked there until she retired at the end of 1999. Since 1998, she has arranged a series of courses and workshops on rock art site management, or has given advice, for the Southern African Rock Art Project in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania aimed at identifying rock art sites for nomination to the world heritage list and training the site managers. Since 2005, she has managed the South African Rock Art Initiative, a programme of the Getty Conservation Institute, that has trained rock art tourist guides and rock art site managers at the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site and the Cederberg.

2016 INCOME TAX SEASON ARTICLE JOHANN VAN ZYL

C

ertain expenses are tax deductible and can reduce your tax obligation to SARS. The 2016 tax season opens during July 2016 when all normal tax submissions have to be submitted to SARS. With that in mind, here are 5 common expenses that you can claim from SARS making sure you pay the least amount of tax and maximizing your potential for a refund: 1. Contributions to a medical aid will be converted to a tax credit and qualifying medical expenses, not claimed or reimbursed from medical aids, will form part of a formula to determine the final deduction. 2. Travel, fuel and vehicle maintenance costs are permitted if you have a travel allowance. You will have to keep a logbook of actual business kilometers travelled as per SARS requirement. 3. Expenses directly related to generating income from renting out a property. (Example: repairs & maintenance, rates, levies, interest on bond, insurance, telephone etc.) 4. Contributions to retirement annuities and/or pension, based on a formula. 5. Wear and tear (depreciation) on personal items such as a laptop, cellphone or other device used for work purposes.

SARS will only refund you if you have paid too much tax during the year. This could be in the form of PAYE, provisional tax or additional expenditure as the above-mentioned 5 points. If your employer already accounts for your medical aid & retirement annuity on your monthly pay slip, these expenses will still have to be completed on your ITR12 tax return but will most likely already be utilized to reduce your monthly PAYE payment to SARS, and will therefore not result in an additional deduction to reduce your tax payable, or result in a refund. SARS is strict about the paying-out of refunds and therefore all details completed on your annual tax return must be supported by documentation, so always keep this documentation filed in a safe place. Once your return is submitted, SARS might require you to submit this supporting documentation for a review/audit. If you are selected for a review or audit, the process will be delayed until this is finalized. SARS has a general practice of attending to reviews or audits within 21 business days, but this is not a set rule and it could take longer. j

ome two years ago I was asked to do a series of wine presentations in China, travelling from Beijing in the north, to Changsa in the south. Having visited there three times previously for various wine shows, I assumed I had some idea of what to expect! I discovered to my horror that on this occasion, while most of the audiences might have been in the right target market financially, they were not regular wine consumers at all; most were not even occasional wine drinkers! In their wisdom, my hosts thought that a presentation on South African vines and wines, followed by a wine tasting of half a dozen wines would prove to be the catalyst to convert… So while everyone nodded, clapped and agreed, I immediately sensed that tasting a range of dry red wines, mid-morning, “as is”, was a bit like tasting your first olive – and wondering what is the attraction. A radical change of plan was needed – and for the rest of the trip we only tasted round a table and together with the most wonderful array of Chinese foods, presented the traditional way of “lots of little things” on a central revolving table. What a treat, and what a feast for the senses. We were not remotely at the stage of “wine pairing”; this was literally a marriage of convenience devised to introduce wine into the mind-set. What a success it turned out to be; from there on there was no looking back. There is a lesson to be learned here for us as more seasoned wine drinkers, and that is to try, whenever possible, to enjoy wine with food, and to sense them both equally. So often we have wine at the table almost as a regular condiment like salt or pepper, same wine, come rain or shine, a trusted friend maybe, but no longer stimulating conversation. We are most fortunate at the Darling Wine Shop to have an amazing array of interesting and interested visitors passing through our doors. In general, they are an adventurous bunch and often leave clutching an assortment of different Darling wines, sometimes even writing back to let us know which wines really hit the spot.

A great attraction in the Shop are the menus of restaurants in Darling and along the West Coast, which we feel are really worth a visit – not only for the great food that they offer, but also, and indeed only, if they have a decent selection of regional wines on offer. To fully appreciate the fine array of foods of the region, you deserve to be offered a good choice of wine, (and that does not mean only the hugely expensive). Indeed, plans are afoot to make a Wine Shop Wine List Award to those places going the extra mile - and this does not mean you need a long wine list, simply one that reflects a diversity of wine and producer. I remain intrigued that we can be so adventurous with regard to our choice of dish from the menu, or even more so, the special board, and yet remain conservative with our choice of wine. The Tuesdays with Omnia evenings at Brigs Barn are a fascinating study where people will explore the different weekly menu offerings, whilst often drinking the same old wine. We learn a lot from visitors to the Shop – many of them going into much detail about those places which really wowed them, and thankfully, a lot less often, those that disappointed. This in turn enables us to provide the kind of regional food and wine information that people have come to expect from us. WINE CHOICES yy Groote Post Riesling - A superb food wine – no decent wine list should be without a good Riesling. yy Darling Cellars Premium Kroon 2013 - One of the best wines coming out of Darling Cellars, and will always come up trumps at a tasting. Very limited stock left of the excellent 2013 vintage. yy Ondine Cabernet Franc 2013 - Just been awarded a Gold Medal at the Concours International De Lyon in France. A true explorers reward! yy Fairview Darling Syrah 2013 - More Back magic from Charles Backs’s Drie Papenfontein Vineyard. Dark plums, bramble berries and hints of spice, this is what good Shiraz is all about. j

Something of a veteran in the wine industry, Charles has a wide experience of wines and wine markets. As a négociant he produces his unique Withington range of wines and owns the Darling Wine Shop - which houses the largest range of Darling wines in the world. charles@darlingwine.co.za j 022 492 3971 www.darlingwine.co.za

THE DOM OF DOUGH:

GORDON BREAKEY

ARTICLE DAVID COLESHILL PHOTOS SILVER DUNE PHOTOGRAPHY

rowing up in Camps Bay, a young Gordon Breakey had an early entry into the world of food. His parents were the owners of the infamous Bay Steakhouse, where he learned his trade in catering. After school, he spent time as an officer-chef in the Navy, eventually leaving for London to study with Pru Leith. Having had his fill, Gordon packed his bags and started his travels, meandering through Europe and ending up across the water in America, but “just for a visit” he says. Needing work, he found employment fibre glassing and painting yachts. Feeling the need to feed his thirst for food knowledge, he moved to the Marriott Hotel group, meanwhile earning his qualification as an executive chef with the C.I.A. (Culinary Institute of America), before moving into Film catering as “chef-to-the-stars”. Working on productions such as Drowning Mona, Vanilla Sky, A.I., Fisher King, Rush Hour 2, Kingpin and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, there was also a progression through the American Music Awards and The Grammys, ensuring all 2000 guests were well catered for. During the Screen Actors’ Guild strike, his company changed focus to sporting events, allowing Gordon to work at seven U.S. Opens, and NINE Indianapolis 500’s as well as NASCAR events and Barrett-Jackson Auctions. During this time, a little restaurant in Noblesville, Indiana, caught his eye, which he purchased and ran for 4 years till he sold-up and bought a sailboat to cruise the coast of California, returning to catering between adventures, back in Yzerfontein for 3 months every year. His parent’s poor health forced a return for Gordon, who then put down long term roots in town, and STALLIONS PIZZA was born.

26

THE CREATIVE ISSUE 2016 j

Famed for new flavour experiences, with names like “Evil Jungle” and “Pulled Pork”, the pizza bug had bitten Yzerfontein and his place was sealed as the “Dom of Dough”, this unfortunately played against his plans to retire as a man of leisure. Thankfully for residents, he decided to rather go back to freelancing, and can, most Tuesdays and Thursdays (weather permitting), be found making the mouths of unacquainted pizza virgins delight in his culinary escapades at Strandkombuis. So what’s next you may ask? ”Spit-braais, potjies and smoked meats” he says, ”catering only for small groups, you know, up to 200.” With a cheeky grin on his face and a permanent twinkle in his eye he adds: “And why not a brew Pub while we’re at it?” Gordon finishes with “It’s a love for the food, a passion, to see the look on people’s faces when they have finished their meals, that’s what brings me back every time.”

RECIPE: EVIL JUNGLE PASTA SAUCE

Ingredients: yy 500g Angelhair Pasta yy 200g Black Cat Smooth Peanut Butter yy 200g Sweet Chilli Sauce yy 1 Red Onion yy Garlic yy Cilantro/Dhania yy Cream yy Chilli Powder

Cook the pasta to recipe (Al Dente), remove and allow to cool or alternatively cool under running water. Finely dice ½ red onion and 2 cloves of garlic. Lightly sauté onion/garlic in 1tsp of olive oil. Add peanut butter stirring continuously over medium heat, spice it up to your own requirements with chilli powder. Once warm throughout, add chilli sauce and mix well. Add cream to achieve desired consistency, toss mixture with pasta and warm through. Garnish with cilantro and thinly sliced red onion. Enjoy with a bottle of deep red wine, such as Groote Post “Old Mans’ Blend”. This recipe can be used with chicken, beef, pork or whatever meat take your fancy, even tasty as a vegetarian option. j

ie Rooi Granaat (Red Pomegranate) is special – you know that as you arrive and the maitre d’ sweeps out to open your car doors. The restaurant is plushly decorated, reminding one immediately of a fabulous Parisian bistro, with food befitting a king. I have been coming to Die Rooi Granaat for at least 8 years – it has become our go-to place for special events and celebrations (or Afval – yes, I would say, the best Afval on the West Coast!). You are always made to feel very welcome, and treated like royalty as you are shown to your table. You will never feel neglected; the food is always brought promptly and your wine glass is always full (they only stock wines from the Darling area). The menu is updated every day with the produce that is available; I really like that and whilst the menu is small (usually less than 10 items from entrées to desserts), it has never disappointed me. It is difficult to categorise the food style; I guess I would call it good ol’ South African food with a French flair – but ever the perfectionist, the Chef ensures that the meal is always excellent! My absolute favorite is Pikante Afval (spicy tripe), done the traditional South African way – rich and delicious. The menu usually consists of 2 entrées, 4 mains and 2 desserts. You can never go wrong with Die Rooi Granaat house salad as a starter; however, the best dish I have ever had was the Smoked Trout and Leek soup – WOW! Mains usually consist of a fish dish (often prawns, which is my wife’s go-to dish), lamb (only lamb from Calvinia), beef THE CREATIVE ISSUE 2016 j

(Rump Madagascar is a firm favourite of mine) and a bredie (stew). Desserts are also to-die-for. However, for some reason I always seem to end my evening at Die Rooi Granaat with an Irish Coffee! On our last visit I had the Pork Belly and Pea soup as a starter which was exceptional. The main dish was West Coast Mussel Stroganoff – the unusualness of this dish drew me to it and it certainly did not disappoint. My wife went for her usual prawns, but this time it was a Durban Style Curry – delicious. For desert we shared a Chocolat Pot – deliciously rich cream and homemade chocolate ice-cream, and naturally I had an Irish Coffee! The team at Die Rooi Granaat have created something truly and uniquely South African – something that you do not find anywhere else – and according to me they are the consummate West Coast Food Heroes! If you come to Yzerfontein, you MUST eat at this establishment. I recommend that you make reservations (especially in holiday season) to ensure that you are not disappointed. am a Clinical Psychologist who has actively worked in Private Practice since 1994. I also love photography. The links between creativity and mental health are frequently debated and I am always curious about what is said. Does one have to be tortured, poor, and misunderstood to create great art? Is the final product the measure of creativity? What is the difference between the road taken by the dedicated artist and the everyday creative process used by others? Pain can leave any person introspective. Recovery is creative. Loss is an example. When we are in pain due to life’s inevitable losses, we turn away from others and from our world. Colours darken or are not noticed. Life loses its flavour. There is no energy for joy. And for a time this is a necessary part of saying goodbye. But the above is also a recipe for healing, and one that any individual can use regardless of talent or training, when the time for recovery arrives. Notice the colours, and the darkness subsides, have a meal with friends and life’s flavour returns. Consciously seeking out creative activity transmutes the inner pain and connects one back to the world. As a psychologist I love working with consciously creative individuals. They are able to adjust to the challenge of new thinking and they widen my own horizons time and again. Consciously choosing to live creatively is a sign of mental health. feel challenged. Here I may try to get the person to think again about what they are already doing, or about what they should do differently. ART CLASSES AT

Pre Primary

xtra-curricular art at Darling Pre Primary was started last year by Elmie Smit. When she moved away from Darling I took over the classes. There are ten children in the class, who are aged between four and six. They come for art for an hour after school on a Tuesday. They have painted and printed and cut out and stuck, and done life size drawings of themselves, and lots of other interesting things. We have a lot of fun and I love to see how each child’s interpretation of the topic and medium is so very individual. How some love paintbrushes and others pencils; how some of the children whip out their masterpieces in minutes and others take their time. The classes are R50 per lesson and there is a once off annual fee of R200 for art materials. With this lump sum I try to get the most value for money without compromising on quality. This is tricky given the price of art supplies. At the end of the year there will be a small art exhibition of the children’s best work. After the art classes I am always amazed by the creativity of the children - I am inspired, and exhausted! j

But will you? Before you and your pal start a new life together, there are a few things you need to know. It’s important to be sure that the puppy is the right one for you, and that you’re the right owner for the puppy! 1. Do you have children? If yes, you should choose a breed that is child-friendly. With that, comes teaching your children how to handle a dog properly. 2. Do you have other pets? If yes, you have to think carefully about their behavior, gender and age and then decide how you are going to introduce the new puppy to them. 3. What is your lifestyle? If you are not home on a regular basis, you’ll have to get someone to help you feed them, give them love and regular exercise. If all this is not possible, you might have to reconsider adopting a dog. If you live in a small block of flats, with a small garden, do not get a big dog with lots of energy.

4. Can you afford it? Dogs need to get vaccinated, fed well, de-wormed, treated for parasites, sterilized, etc. Remember that bigger dogs eat more and their medication and operations are more expensive. When adopting a puppy, it is wise to train them through puppy classes – which is another expense. After all of that you must decide where you are going to purchase the puppy. If you’re looking for a specific breed, do your research and buy a puppy at a breeder with a good reputation. If you’re looking for any dog, do the right thing and go to your nearest SPCA and adopt one. Remember to insist on getting a vaccination certificate and ask what food the puppy is used to eating. Once you have your puppy, it is also a very good idea to take him to your vet as soon as possible, so that they can make sure the puppy is healthy, and give you all the information you need to be a great parent. We hope that helps. Good luck and enjoy the journey with your new best friend! j

VIR ALLES WAT LEWE

Plaaslike vrywilligers maak ʼn verskil in die Yzerfontein-omgewing.

D

s with many historic homes in Darling, The Granary Petite Hotel situated at 5 Long Street, has a rich history. Oom Nicolaas Hendrik Loubser born 1863, who owned the grain mill on the adjacent property, constructed the main house in the early 1900s. Oom Nicolaas manufactured wagons in the barn in the backyard, some of which are still on display in the Darling Museum. The house stayed in the Loubser family until the year 2000 when Albertus Loubser sold to Berindina Coetzee, and it thereafter changed hands several times before it was acquired by Paul and Wendy Osborne in 2006, who turned it into The Granary Guesthouse. In 2015 Paul and Wendy decided to return to the UK and sold the property to Leon Nel, a Civil Engineer, and Adéle Drake, an environmental consultant residing in Darling. WHY PETITE AND NOT BOUTIQUE? Our quaint hotel offers accommodation in six rooms, comfortably sleeping a total of 16 guests. Four bedrooms are situated upstairs, of which three bedrooms share an entrance and communal lounge ideal for a group or family of six. The remaining upstairs family bedroom has a private entrance and comprises two bedrooms sleeping a family of four. A family suite with private entrance also comprising two bedrooms is situated on the ground floor. Another room, situated in the garden completes the accommodation. The décor is unadorned with rooms focussed on comfort rather than style. DEVINE BREAKFAST On weekdays, guests may enjoy a healthy hearty breakfast at the unique Chicory Cheese Café restaurant situated on the ground floor of the building, and at the renowned The Marmalade Cat restaurant, a short step across the road, on Sundays. j For bookings & enquiries contact Adéle Drake.
