Love Yzer was Mei-maand 6 jaar oud.

Amanzimtoti in Kwazulu Natal. Skool was beslis ’n hoogtepunt van my lewe. Ek is vandag nog so, ek ken nie my perke nie. Ek is ’n regte daddy’s girl, terwyl my suster en ma weer baie dieselfde is. JY EN JOU GESIN TREK EERSDAAGS TERUG KZN TOE. WATTER GELEENTHEDE WAG DAAR VIR JOU?

Ek wil by my ouers wees. En the one can’t function without the other.

By ’n konsert in Potchefstroom! Herman Pretorius, my beste vriend destyds, het my aan hom voorgestel by die musiekgroep Straatligkinders se huis. Ek was toe die ‘wintie’ Peter Stuyvesant rep met die BMW Z4 en Loedi was in ’n 8 THE WINTER ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

dirty rock band, Taxi Violence.

Toe trou ek. Ek het amper my lewe verloor – asook my dogter s’n – omdat ek 34kg opgetel het.

COVER jou lewe wees. There’s no in between.

Natuurlik, niemand verwag so iets nie!

My familie, kussing en kombers! LOEDIE, LEE-ANNE, STORM & HUNTER VAN RENEN

by Virgin Active RED.

Ek moes byvoorbeeld bedank by my werk. My man moes weet dat hy tot 50 dae lank die kinders alleen sou moes oppas. Jou banksake, rekeninge… al daardie goed moet in orde kom op baie kort kennisgewing.

WAT SOU JY VIR LESERS AANBEVEEL OM HULLE TE MOTIVEER OM MEER AKTIEF TE WEES?

Begin net! Dit klink so eenvoudig, maar soveel mense begín net nie! Verskonings is leuens! ’n Parkrun is ’n goeie begin.

Miss Margate. Ek was ses. My sussie het gewen. Teer sakie. EN WAT HET JY SEDERTDIEN GEWEN?

Mev.

Dié tipe mense inspireer my.

If a human has done it, it’s humanly possible.

I

n his various books, well known author Lawrence G Green describes the 16 Mile Beach as “so laden with ozone that it is like breathing pure oxygen” and “being like the world before man appeared; here the sea beats with the thunder heard before man started his pitiful little journey down the ages”. On 22 March 2019, a few intrepid Yzerfonteiners got to experience this description firsthand when they walked the 16 Mile Beach from the Atlantic Look Out Point in the West Coast National Park to Yzerfontein. A distance of 20 kilometres. The idea was brandished a few weeks earlier by Yzerfontein resident Dieter Stutz to Boytjie Basson, who then undertook to co-ordinate and arrange the walk. After checking the tides, the date was decided upon and planning commenced. At 08:00 on the day, a group totalling 28 met in the parking area off the main beach and were transported by a taxi and four cars to the start point. On arrival, a group photo was taken, a few rules explained, and then led by Boytjie Basson through the fynbos and over the dunes onto

arling Brew Woodstock opened their doors to the public on Saturday, 2 March 2019, bringing the extensive range of Darling Brew craft beers closer to craft beer lovers in Cape Town. Hailing from Germany, General Manager Lars Pflanz blends his successful recipe for operating bars and restaurants in Europe with a South African flavour to offer a truly unique dining experience featuring bratwurst and boerewors, German-style pretzels and gourmet burgers as well as traditional flammkuchen, exceptional cocktails and fine malt whiskies. the beach. The weather was perfect and the beach nicely compacted at spring low tide which was at 10:30. Boytjie then handed over to Thys Odendal to act as leader until the finish which was at Mount Royal, 20 Beach Road. In advertising the walk on social media beforehand, Boytjie had requested that participants be over 50 years of age in order to promote group harmony and fairly similar fitness levels. Although a few younger ladies were allowed to join the group, the average age was about 55 years, with the oldest being Peter Herrmann at 79 years old. The walk was a leisurely one, with the emphasis placed on being enjoyable to all, and a 10 minute break was compulsory every hour to keep the group together and also for nature breaks. At the same time a bright smoke marker was set off so that the progress could be monitored from Yzerfontein. The group arrived at Mount Royal at 13:15 to well earned bottled waters sponsored by Yzerfontein Spar, and also cold beers, boerewors rolls and music arranged by the Bassons of Mount Royal. From the many favourable reactions on social media as well as feedback received, this event could become a yearly fixture. j

LOCAL NEWS bring live music, open mic nights, brew classes, speed dating and so much more to the social scene in Cape Town giving locals a place to unwind after work, bond with mates or impress a date. Bringing the Darling Brew experience from the West Coast to Woodstock was an idea brewed between Darling Brew cofounders Kevin and Philippa Wood, and Verde Hotels’ owners Mario and Annemarie Delicio, with their shared values of environmental responsibility, sustainability and zero waste proving to be fertile ground. Philippa Wood says, “ We are excited to bring the Darling experience from our home on the West Coast to Woodstock, one of Cape Town’s oldest and hippest suburbs - our range of beers is as diverse and eclectic as our new neighbourhood!” Darling Brew Woodstock will allow craft beer lovers to enjoy the entire Darling Brew range right in the heart of the Mother City. j

opgedaag!

Hierdie was regtig ’n eye opening ondervinding. Ek is die Here baie dankbaar vir hierdie ondervinding. j

KORANRUG FARM SCHOOL

ARTICLE CONTRIBUTORS JANET WITHINGTON | RIAAN NEETHLING

Who doesn’t want the very best for their child? Throughout the spectrum of South Africa’s peoples there are parents who are sacrificing their time, skills, creativity or hard-earned wages and salaries to invest in their children, and thus the future of our country. When this is complimented by committed and dedicated teachers with a passion to make a difference in the lives of their learners, a success story is born.

W

ere you to make a visit to the Koranrug Farm School just outside Darling, you would find an understanding of this belief very much in evidence. Koranrug is one of only two farm schools, out of the original eleven in the area, which has not been closed, but rather, its success story goes from strength to strength.

THE CHILDREN WITH TANNIE ANNA 18 THE WINTER ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

The Koranrug community project started in 2017 when the school was invited by the originator of the Darling Scarecrow Festival to make a scarecrow, and in 2018 the project was tackled with even greater enthusiasm when Miss Piggy was born! One of Darling’s residents was so infected and inspired by this enthusiasm that she continued to drive an initiative to improve conditions at the school. It started with the planting of wild fig trees as part of a Heritage Day celebration in September 2018. Learners, teachers and parents alike all participated enthusiastically in the tree planting ceremony! This last year the school benefitted from a R23 400 donation raised at the Scarecrow Auction, and also R8 260 from a beautiful High Tea attended by 145 Darling ladies - of particular note, teacher Christelle, with her mother, granny and auntie, all of whom are ex-pupils. What a legacy, and how proud they were! The event was attended by ladies from across the diverse community of Darling, and for an afternoon the many divisions we still find in our town seemed to disappear. The funds have been used to repair wall damage and paint the school inside and out (a stunning blue and cheery yellow) by painters who worked through the holidays, every day except Christmas and New Year to ensure that the all was ready for the start of the school year. In addition, and with the assistance of local organizations and residents, donations of all sorts have been received including the smartest sportswear for each child; blinds throughout the school, and illustrated creatively to aid teaching; stationery; a table, chairs and couch to create

a staffroom; the servicing of all the plumbing by a local plumber; items for the kitchen; audio-visual equipment; netting to close off the stoep area during the rainy season; and wonderfully, even warm scarves knitted by ladies at an old age home in the Strand and sports equipment from overseas teachers who are the children of local residents. Mr and Mrs Loedolff from Vyekraal Farm on whose land the School stands, and which their workers’ children attend, play an important role in the maintenance of the school buildings. They have recently installed new gutters and presently fly screens are being fitted to all the windows. They are also in discussion with the Swartland District Municipality to improve the school sewage system and improve the water pressure. Lastly and impressively, and proof of the belief which this School has engendered, Koranrug is set to be the pilot school for a solar energy project by SlimSun, developer of the Swartland solar park. SlimSun has previously also provided a container which is used as a classroom for the Grade R class.

Enige hulp of donasies sal verwelkom word.

COMMUNITY

CHOICE AND CHANGE | Two Powerful Instruments ARTICLE IZAK GELDERBLOM

The democracy in South Africa has not yet reached maturity. We still need to reach a state of racial harmony, for example.

W

e should remind ourselves what Mahatma Ghandi said years ago: “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him.”

THE INSTRUMENT OF CHOICE

The instrument of choice allows us to choose how we will behave or how we will react towards anything that happens in our lives. • We can choose not to be abrupt and rude; • We can choose to be friendly; • We can choose to be tolerant; • We can choose to be accommodating; • We can choose not to be arrogant and superior; • We can choose to be courteous. To achieve reconciliation, to ensure a peaceful future for our children, to achieve racial harmony and to combat intolerance, we should consciously choose not to use racial or derogatory terms. We should react to people according to our values and principals, and according to the behaviour of the individual we are dealing with and not according to archaic racial stereotyping or prejudice. Our reactions should not be based on whether the person has blue, green or brown eyes. THE INSTRUMENT OF CHANGE

As soon as we make the proper choices, we and our country will start to change. We know the process: we choose to follow an exercise programme, and we change into people who become fit. We choose to watch our diet, and we change into people who are slimmer or healthier. We can change, if we make a conscious decision to concentrate on our choices. POLITICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Unfortunately, politicians in our country often use racial terms when referring to the general population or minority

groups. It is unacceptable. Often we as ordinary citizens also fail this test. The Population Registration Act of 1950, for example, was repealed during June 1991 but more than 20 years later we still, during private discussions, refer to other individuals in terms of these racial classifications. When will we choose to change our behaviour? Chapter two of the Constitution of South Africa contains the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is a cornerstone of democracy in South Africa as it enshrines the rights of all people in the country and affirms the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom. Freedom of religion, belief and opinion. And so forth. DO WE KNOW THE BILL OF RIGHTS?

The Constitution and the Bill of Rights can be obtained at the following web site: www.justice.gov.za Or you can approach a government department to obtain a booklet containing the Constitution. SUMMARY

We should strive to make the bill of rights our own, and everyday to live according to the guidelines enshrined within the bill of rights. When we start making conscious choices that are in line with the bill of rights - to be tolerant, to treat people with dignity, to regard people as equal human beings, to afford people a personal opinion (and respect that opinion), then we will change in line with the bill of rights. As indicated by Mahatma Ghandi, the world around us will then also change and people will react towards us in line with our behaviour. We cannot wait for politicians to bring about these changes. Each of us has his or her personal circle of influence (friends, colleagues, employees), and it is vital that we live the changes within our spheres of influence. Do not wait. Empower yourself today. Consider the choices that you should make, and not only will you change, but all the people that know you and come into contact with you, will also change. What powerful tools! j

COMMUNITY ARTICLE LEON MARE

On the initiative of a well-known local resident Rupert Taljaard, an Article 21 non-profit company has recently been registered – Yzer Fist.

T

he rampant crime spree in our beloved little town of Yzerfontein has everyone nervous and on edge. Despite the valiant and much appreciated efforts by the SAPS, Yzer Armed Response and our efficient Neighbourhood Watch, the burglaries are continuing with seeming impunity. We decided to add a different approach to ridding Yzerfontein from all crimes, especially burglaries and drug trading. We are actually prepared to pay cash for useful information. We deem ourselves lucky to have the right man at the helm in the form of Rupert. Back in 2010, while still residing in the Lowveld, Rupert’s best friend, Bossie Bezuidenhout, was shot and killed during a house robbery. At the funeral Rupert vowed that he would do anything in his power to bring the perpetrator to book, and he started doing what he is doing today for the community of Yzerfontein. Back then he registered a section 21 company “Bossies Community Justice”, and with the support of the community, started paying for information. They got information that led to the murderer, who was sentenced to 30 years in jail in 2015. Books can be written about the successes of Bossies Community Justice, which has grown to be one of the major security companies in the Lowveld. Yzer Fist is, however, not a new security company. Our aim is not to compete with anyone, but to help the community and everyone else who strives for a peaceful life and a crime free environment. We have posted a reward of R50 000 cash to anyone who gives us information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the criminals responsible for the current spate of burglaries. We have already received some useful information, which we are following up. We are also evaluating the efficiency of the current status of our CCTV camera system, which needs either upgrading or starting again from scratch, utilising modern technology like FLIR or thermal imaging and possibly a drone with night vision. We are also looking for a dog handler with a trained tracker dog, who can get to the scene of a crime immediately.

And so the wish list goes on and on, but we feel the time to stop this is now, not later. Now, before we get to the tipping point where we start sliding into the same abyss as some of the other towns on the West Coast. As with most things in life, the bottom line is funding. Without the help and support of our community, we won’t get anywhere. We cannot do it without you. We’re not charging you anything – we’re doing it for free. But we need donations from you to finance the equipment we need for getting the job done. There are a lot of elderly people and people living alone in Yzerfontein. We want them not to fear the dark, and to be able to sleep in peace. j

ONTMOET ANITA

Veg waarvoor jy lief is.

Hierdie les bly haar tot vandag toe by.

My belangstelling in klokke het werklik posgevat toe ek ’n kleuter was. Dis soveel meer as slegs ’n ornament.

Vind troos by Swarthond

WE CARE

ARTIKEL | FOTO’S DANA SNYMAN

Of nog beter wil voel as wat jy voel. Honde met ’n storie agter hulle. Dit het begin by Anette Roberts, my verloofde wat twee jaar gelede oorlede is. Swarthond is gebore.

’n Kind, sê maar, se oupa of ouma vir wie hy of sy baie lief was, is oorlede. Daar is baie verskillende moontlikhede.

REAL GOLD OR JUST GLITTER ARTICLE | PHOTOS CHARLES WITHINGTON | THE DARLING WINE SHOP

N

ow there are wine shows and wine shows and probably the best analogy to compare, is that between educational institutions; Oxford and Cambridge would, for example, be the mark of extreme excellence with at the other end of the scale, some random on-line institution which offers apparently glittering qualifications on payment of a fee. So it is with wine – a few top-end events which really take time and trouble to objectively identify the best wines, with a slew of others (and even individuals!) who have worked out that there is good money to be made in issuing “Gold” as widely as possible. It is hard enough for the consumer, and especially so in the supermarket environment where there is no shortage of the “el cheapo” accolades, to make a rational decision. Then there are also those producers, and mainly from the topend, who deliberately choose NOT to enter their wines in the award circus. While I am certainly not saying that OMTWS is the be all and end all of SA Wine shows, the judges are extremely diligent in what they do. Every score is arrived at by discussion, the panellists taste and score working in a different sequence from each other. They then compare scores, arrive at a consensus score (or call in the Chairman if they can’t agree). Once a wine has won a gold medal, it is reviewed (for top of class/trophy) by all the other judges on the team.

TASTING TALES

dashed into the shop, grabbed the tasting “box”, hauled the relevant wines out of the fridge, and slung the whole lot into the bakkie. On the way to Cape Town we had to drop off a gift at the house of our son’s parents-in-law. We arrived in a cloud of dust and while Janet was handing over the necessary, I thought I had better check to see that all the wines were indeed there. A quick search revealed that I was short of a key wine in the line-up, a bottle of Groote Post Salt of the Earth. Panic de luxe ensued and John (the father-inlaw) sensing disaster, offered to help! He had recently been cycling at Groote Post where he had bought a bottle. Alas – it was the Sea Salter – but that was already in the line-up and on board. More panic – and in the last resort John opened up his wine store under the stairs. Aha – some light in this tunnel. First glance at what was on offer revealed some quite good stuff, and although highly grateful, I mumbled “not bad – but this is high end Constantia I am going to!” So he replied “well I have some older wines in the sideboard cabinet over there, but they are probably over by now”. I had a look – holy smoke a Lanzerac Pinotage 1993!! Visually perfect and no ullage – “Wow” I mumble to John “hey – look at this are you sure?”

A while ago I donated a “Wine Tasting” to the NSRI charity auction for which the successful bidder kindly paid R7 500. Shortly thereafter I was contacted to arrange a date to go and put my mouth where they had invested their money and perform in front of about 15 people in one of the smarter suburbs of Cape Town. I do tastings fairly often and this is only possible because ever efficient Ida (yes indeed – our Ida who runs the Wine Shop) prepares literally everything from pencils to tasting sheets, even predecanting the wines we have chosen. If there ever was military precision in Wine – this is it. As is my wont, it is always a rush at the last minute, and so it was for this particular tasting on a Saturday morning, as I ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD...

26 YEARS IN CAPTIVITY!

CHARLES WITHINGTON

I was recently invited to attend the Judges’ feedback session of the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show (OMTWS), which proved to be a most interesting exercise.

DINE A moment’s hesitation so I add, “Well it IS for charity”… And off I scoot – grinning from ear to ear – this cat has stolen the cream – double thick! I arrive in Constantia, wade through the plush carpets to the dining room and start setting up. First thing is to gently extract the cork from this very old lady. A most delicate French corkscrew is provided and it works like a dream. The wine is duly decanted and left to rest. On to the rest of the wines and suddenly, what do I discover in the box, but the “missing” bottle of Groote Post Salt of the Earth. Challenge of conscience – do I “un-decant” the Pinotage back into the bottle and take it back to Darling and share it with some good wine friends all whom would bring along their eye-teeth to the occasion, or do I present it at the tasting. Conscience edged in by a whisker – it was given to me for charity and for charity it must be. What an experience it was, clear as a bell with a russet colour. Initially a mellow almost porty aroma leading on to a soft almost sweetish taste. The fruit fading but still there and all with a mouth filling elegance. Ten minutes in the glass and it just got better – and so it should – it had only just been released having been locked up for over 26 years, one less than Nelson Mandela. How I wish I could have shared it with him. j

COOK

Van stokperdjie tot besigheid

ARTIKEL LOUISA STEYL | FOTO’S NEELS KLEYNHANS

Is die besigheids-kool die Moer Op Als Sous werd? Neels Kleynhans smaak hom dit is...

A “

Neels is eintlik ’n voltydse fotograaf. Neels is mal oor braai. “Jy is ’n groot inspirasie vir my. MOER VLERKIE RESEP

So: been kant moet altyd langer gebraai word.

DARLING BRIDGE CLUB IS GROWING

T

he Darling Bridge Club started in March 2018 with only 10 members, with the ability to play with two full tables or two and a half tables. By the end of the year, the membership had grown to 16 and they have been having between three and four tables when all members are able. The objective for 2019 is to grow the membership to twenty. On 30th June last year, a very successful Bridge Tournament was held – a first in Darling. There was very good feedback and many contestants have been asking when will be the next tournament. So, a date has indeed been fixed for Saturday, 15 June 2019. There is currently sufficient equipment to host five tables and should this number be exceeded, a new scoring system and possibly some additional equipment will need to be put in place. On 5th December, there was another successful event, when spouses were invited along with members, to enjoy a Christmas lunch, and when a few prizes were provided. Membership fees are R100 p.a. and playing fees R20. The Club plays Duplicate Bridge on the last two Thursdays of the month in the Bowls Club in Darling.

Bridge lessons are given in Yzerfontein on Monday afternoons or Tuesday mornings for those who would like to play but have not played for some time. Lessons are also available in Darling in the evening. j

DIESEL DILEMMAS AND FISHY BAIT ROCKETS ARTICLE | PHOTOS BOYTJIE BASSON

We meander further down memory lane with Boytjie Basson...

O

ne weekend my cousin Gary Basson and I were in Yzerfontein while his grandparents were away on holiday. We decided that we would enjoy the weekend using his grandfather’s old Land Rover, which was parked in the unlocked garage behind their house, Rock View in Beach Road. The problem was that there was very little petrol in the Jeep and we still wanted to drive to Langebaan via the old white dirt road (which then linked Yzerfontein to Langebaan) to visit the Tropics at the Panoramic Hotel. As luck would have it, roadworks were taking place in Yzerfontein at the time and a storage area with equipment and diesel tanks was set up in Main Road just behind where Beaches Restaurant is today. Not very mechanically minded at the time, we somehow decided that although it was a petroldriven Jeep, diesel would work just fine. Fuel is fuel, we argued, so we filled up the Jeep and drove off to Langebaan with a huge cloud of smoke following us all the way there and back. Luckily, Gary Basson was his grandfather’s namesake and favourite grandchild, so we got away with that little misdemeanor fairly lightly, given that the entire engine had to be overhauled and cleaned and the old Land Rover would never run as smoothly as it did before. In 1982, while in the SA Navy and with the ship that I was serving on in the Dry Dock for maintenance, I arranged a hike along the two beaches on either side of Yzerfontein for those members of the ship’s company not involved in the maintenance work. The route took us from Churchhaven to Grotto Bay over a period of two days and two nights. The first day we left Simon’s Town very early. About thirty of us crammed into the back of a Bedford truck with sleeping bags, enough water and victuals for two days. We were also allowed a few rations of Old Brown Sherry for the cold nights that had been forecast and which we used for motivating our request. Three hours after leaving Simon’s

Town, we were dropped off at Churchhaven. From there we hiked over the sand dunes onto 16 Mile Beach and from there to Yzerfontein: the same route which Dave Mallett and I had run nine years earlier for a generous serving of Granny’s homemade ice cream. That night we camped on the empty plot just off the main beach, now the property of Martin Versfeld. Early the next morning, after a tin of bully beef and baked beans on a slice of government bread, we walked to Schaap Island, through Pearl Bay and from there we hiked to Grotto Bay via the soft sandy beach passing Tygerfontein, Jakkalsfontein and Rondeberg to Grotto Bay where the Bedford awaited us to take us back to Simon’s Town the next day. There were no houses at Grotto Bay then, except for a few deserted bungalows that local farmers had erected right on the beach and which they would use mainly during school holidays and on the weekends. There were also two more houses situated about two kilometers further away towards Cape Town, perched on the rocks overlooking the sea. One of those houses belonged to Boetman Loubser and that is where we camped and slept that night. Our stomachs were full after braaing freshly slaughtered lamb chops, which were donated to us unexpectedly by Koos Louw who then farmed at Ganzekraal just a short distance from Grotto Bay. Earlier, on arrival at Grotto Bay, the Bedford had developed a flat tyre. And although there was a spare tyre, we could not find a wheel spanner to change the wheel. Because I knew most of the local farmers, a few of us walked to the closest farm, which was Ganzekraal, to borrow a wheel spanner. Koos Louw must have felt very sorry for us judging by how we looked after hiking along the beach for two days. We were sunburnt, unshaven, our uniforms dirty and creased and we were also very hungry. And because he knew my parents very well, Koos Louw was not going to let a son of Darling go to bed on an empty stomach if he could help it.

HISTORY

Boetman Loubser had taken over the use of the Grotto Bay house after Oupa Tokkie Loubser grew too old to make use of the house anymore. One weekend, not long after we had camped and slept at his house during our hike from Churchhaven to Grotto Bay, Boetman Loubser, after doing a few renovations to the house including adding a new deck, invited some friends to spend the weekend with him. The plan was to socialise, fish and also to dive for crayfish and perlemoen. After not having had much luck with fishing on the first day, Boetman Loubser devised a plan to get his bait deeper and further into the sea than he could cast. He believed that the cob, which had evaded them until then, would then be caught. With his friend Zunkel Basson to help him, they tied the bait hook, line and sinker to a fireworks rocket purchased over-the-counter, and left over from the previous Guy Fawkes day. Zunkel Basson was tasked to stand a few metres away from Boetman Loubser holding the rocket whilst Boetman Loubser held the fishing rod himself. As soon as the rocket was lit, it held course beautifully at first, then it suddenly changed course and fell out of the sky, landing at Boetman Loubser’s feet. And because he was wearing a large trench coat that reached his feet and formed a space in which the rocket was now confined to, there was a lot of jumping up and down and running around in circles until the rocket eventually ran out of propellant. This all happened to great amusement and laughter from all his friends: watching from a distance, of course! Boetman Loubser, unlike Mossie Mostert, was never the greatest fisherman, but after the rocket episode he never touched a fishing rod again. He would now much rather sit in his camp chair and pour the drinks and entertain his friends than fish. In 1983 I bought a second-hand Hobie Cat sailing boat, which I left permanently on the main beach, ready to hoist the sails and go for a sail when I visited Yzerfontein on

weekends and holidays. It was great fun sailing out through the breakers and then surfing them back in. One day the waves were too big to launch from the beach, so I decided to tow the Hobie to the harbour and launch from there instead. It was a Saturday afternoon and a big rugby match was due to be televised live at about 4 o’clock. In a hurry and too lazy to take down the mast, we decided to put the Hobie on the trailer and tow it to my future father-in-law’s house in Upper Street so as to be in time for the kick off. As we drove down School Street, the mast hit the overhead power cables. On impact there was a scary yet spectacular explosion resembling a fireworks display. Yzerfontein was first in flames, and then in total darkness. I was very nearly killed after being shocked by the live power cables now lying in the road and in big trouble with the local Municipal authorities. To add insult to injury, I was abused by some very irate weekenders and residents who rushed to the scene to see first hand which idiot was responsible for the damage and for casting Yzerfontein into darkness for the remainder of the weekend. I was reported to the police by Lambert Smit, and he laid criminal charges against me for damaging Municipal property. Once again, as so often before, my parents came to the rescue and paid for all the damages caused and the case was eventually withdrawn. I had now also made an enemy in the self-appointed mayor of Yzerfontein – a strict and stern man called Lambert Smit. The two of us would torment and dislike each other until his last days at Yzerfontein. One New Year’s Eve, or rather New Year’s Day as it was already past midnight, we had just returned from the dance in the shed at Yzerfontein Farm where Die Stal is today when we decided that we should go and wish Oom Lambert Smit a happy new year in our own special manner. We were in a joyous mood so we stopped outside his house in Upper Road, shouted happy new year to him at the tops of our voices and revved the car engine until it suddenly and unexpectedly blew a gasket. Gary Basson’s faithful old lime-green Audi Coupé, which had taken him on countless trips in record time between Kimberley and Cape Town during his two-year National Service weekend passes, had finally had enough of his abuse. The new year did not start well for us. Humiliated, we pushed the car away from Oom Lambert Smit’s house and later that day it was towed to Cape Town to be sold for parts and scrap as Gary Basson did not have the money for a new engine. j

n Saturday, 11 May, an injured juvenile African penguin was found in Yzerfontein. The penguin had a broken left flipper and would not have survived if not for the kind people driving him to SANCCOB. It was driven in two shifts to Table View where SANCCOB is based. African penguins are endangered. Only 50 000 left in the wild, and will be extinct in 5-10 years. SANCCOB is a 50 year old NGO and has responded to every major oil spill along the southern African coastline and at present operates from two seabird centres strategically placed in Table View (Western Cape) and Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape). Other seabirds treated on a regular basis include Cape Gannets, Bank Cormorants and Cape Cormorants (also endangered species); various species of terns, pelagic birds such as albatrosses and petrels, oystercatchers, gulls, pelicans and other coastal seabirds that are found in the region. On average, SANCCOB admits 34 different seabird species for rehabilitation per year, and has admitted more than 50 seabird species in its history.

NATURE RECENT GANNET ADMISSION

On Friday, 17 May SANCCOB admitted 28 abandoned Cape gannet juveniles, rescued due to abandonment by parent birds at the Lambert’s Bay colony. Another batch of 28 was admitted a week later on 24 May, bringing the total to 56 gannets on the premises at the Table View centre. As winter approaches, the adult birds need to hunt to feed and by this time in the season most chicks have fledged and taken flight but these juveniles rescued are not yet ready to care for themselves. It’s because of CapeNature’s presence at the colony to monitor the birds, that results in SANCCOB receiving the birds to feed and care for until release, before they become compromised and emaciated.

The best time for viewing is between 10:30 and 16:00 during the warmest part of the day when the flowers are open. The day temperature must be at least 18 degrees Celsius. Sunny days are best for the opening of flowers. Rainy or overcast weather is not ideal so avoid disappointment. Plan to visit other sights on such days. Flowers face the sun and are therefore best displayed when traveling with the sun behind you. Viewers are advised to travel north soon after departure and then to do most flower-viewing by moving in a southerly direction. When taking a circular route, try traveling in a westerly direction in the morning, followed by a southerly one and finally an easterly one. Get out of the car and walk amongst the flowers but make sure to also look for the delicate, smaller species. Tread lightly and carefully so as not to trample plants unnecessarily. Please don’t pick any flowers. Many outlying areas do not have mobile phone reception. Make sure that you set off on your journey with a full tank as fuel is not readily available everywhere. It is thus also important that you take your own drinking water.

Try to book your accommodation in advance. Darling Flower Line: 084 916 1111 Most towns along the flower routes have fuel stations, ATM’s and mobile reception. Please note that the further north you travel, the greater the distance between towns become! Stop and ask the friendly locals for advice on flower hot spots and distances. Yzerfontein parkrun turns one! ARTICLE HENNIE ZAAYMAN | PHOTOS MARISSA NIEUWOUDT PHOTOGRAPHY

Yzerfontein parkrun which started just more than a year ago on 17 February 2018, turned one year old on 16 February 2019.

I

t was a special day where many runners, walkers and volunteers shared in the joyous occasion. The volunteer team once again pulled out all the stops with their red and white “Valentine’s” theme. From early morning the team was on the farm busy with preparations to ensure that everyone would have fun, and to decorate the event according to the theme. On the morning, 77 runners and 14 volunteers arrived on the farm eagerly awaiting the start of the celebrations. The Run Director started the pre-run welcoming speech with all runners waiting for the count down as usual, but there was a surprise in store! Instead of participating in the event as normal the run on the day was to be reversed. This led too many “oohs” and “aahs” but nevertheless everyone still had a good time. If we look back over the last year there have been a few memorable moments. No matter what the weather, be it 35°C, raining, windy, or freezing we have always had parkrunners showing up and a full team of volunteers. One rainy morning we had only 3 participants but still the

volunteers were as energetic as always. One of the most special moments has to be when we were in the position to hand over a pair of running shoes to a youngster who is staying on the farm where his dad works. We also had the special occasion where Michael Rix from the UK travelled all the way to Yzerfontein parkrun to complete his “Alphabet” run. The split between runners and walkers has been about a 60/40, but very few people complete the parkrun without walking along our route. To date we have had 1450 participating runners covering 17 225km. Over the past year, Yzerfontein parkrun has even resulted in a few people who have never run before, becoming enthusiastic runners and walkers. For them running was a completely new sport. We want to wish Yzerfontein parkrun a very happy 1st birthday and trust that this event will grow from strength to strength. j

his endurance hike, (rated at level 4 for fitness) explores the picturesque and unspoilt coastline between Yzerfontein and Tsaars Bank in the famous West Coast National Park, and is the only guided beach walk of its kind offered within the West Coast biodiversity corridor. Participants will arrive in Yzerfontein and be transported to the West Coast National Park where they will enjoy a typical West Coast meal and local wine tasting, and then spend the night, before departing on the hike early the following morning. Upon arriving at the finish point in Yzerfontein hikers can choose to head home or stay for another night in Yzerfontein on the Cape West Coast. Karen Schräder is the driving force behind this exciting hike and has a passion for sharing Yzerfontein and all that it has to offer with visitors to the area. Being known for its pristine beaches, she identified the unique 16 mile uninterrupted beach north of Yzerfontein as one of the natural wonders of the Cape West Coast and South Africa as a whole, and wanted to share this with visitors. “This new Hiking Challenge is a well-organized and unique experience for small adventurous groups,” says Schräder. “And it is not just about endurance. The experience also includes a wine tasting and the experience to savour local West Coast cuisine.” “The 16 Mile Beach Challenge incorporates parts of the West Coast National Park, which hosts some of the oldest archaeological sites in our country and is internationally known for its extensive bird and plant species. Participants will experience and discover this area in a unique way through the eyes of Honorary Field Rangers who have been working for many many years in the park on a volunteer basis and know the area like the back of their hand.” “This short but captivating experience, which is only an hour away from Cape Town, is not only a wonderful personal challenge but also a great opportunity for a breakaway – to disconnect from stress, reconnect to the beauty of nature, and with yourself. ’n Smulpaap-winkeldief het hom misgis met die Yzerfontein-gemeenskap

I

THE WINTER ISSUE 2019 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

YZERFONTEIN TOURISM

SCHAAP ISLAND

ARTICLE CONTRIBUTION YZERFONTEIN TOURISM

Schaap Island is located on the West Coast - a stone’s throw away from Yzerfontein; however it is not an actual island as the contradictory name implies.

T

he so-called ‘island’ emerges when the high tides isolate a piece of the coast, creating the majestic island impression. Schaap Island received its name around 1657 and according to local folklore, sheep would venture onto the island and become stranded as tides rolled in, separating the herd from the main land. Later, locals and visitors would leave their livestock on the island at night to keep them safe from passing predators like caracal. This coastal jewel is easily accessible at low tide and therefore forms part of the Schaap Island Hiking Trail which passes along old local fishing spots with rather obvious

and unique names such as “Grasbank” due to the amount of sea grass on the flat rocks or “Duiwenes” as pigeons make their nest under a rocky arch. The hike is most certainly worth the trip, moreover the picturesque environment promotes amazing scenes for amateur and professional photographers. BOTHA’S ART

ARTICLE & PHOTOS BOTHA & CHERI LOUW

Successful artist from PE relocates to Yzerfontein to open new art studio.

W

e owned a successful art studio in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape for almost 8 years, tutoring both adults and children. Together with our loyal art students we formed a very special bond creating our art family. A dear friend of ours got married in the Western Cape and we were invited to attend; driving here our dream was born. Something magical happened that we did not expect, not having any knowledge of the Western Cape, we fell in love with it. Once back home we decided to follow our dream. With God’s blessing our house sold within three months and we made the great trek, sad to leave our family, art family and friends behind but looking forward to our new adventure! We decided to take time out to explore this beautiful country, amazed at its wide open fields of canola, its majestic mountains, its rugged coast line and friendly people with their generous hospitality. We went as far as Bitterfontein in search of our place in the sun. Almost at wits end our last stop was at Denneburg Farm on the R27, plus minus 13 kms

from Yzerfontein, to be told that the house that we were to view had been taken. We were shown another house on the property, despondent we walked in only to realize that we had come home - we named it “Vergenoeg”. A couple of months later we have become one with farm life, raising chickens, our latest edition of ducklings, feeding the donkeys treats and helping out our landlord raising a “Hanslam”. Late afternoon we are privileged to experience the most breathtaking sunsets. We have come to realize that this region fits right in with our art lifestyle! Here we are inspired by its raw beauty and able to paint to our hearts content. We would also like to offer adult art classes sharing our extended knowledge of know how, to enable you to reach new heights in practising art in oils professionally. j

What better way to celebrate the arrival of Spring than a run in nature? ARTICLE MICHAEL DAIBER PHOTOS !KHWA TTU PR

S

pring is one of the best times of the year for a trail run. The West Coast Flower Trail Run at !Khwa ttu offers the most colourful trail run where flowers are blossoming and creating gorgeous landscapes. Every trail consists of a combination of jeep tracks, gravel roads and single tracks. These trails are surrounded by some of the West Coast’s most inspiring scenery featuring rolling hills covered in lush, green grass and breathtaking Atlantic ocean views. Out on a nature run nothing beats sighting wild life on a beautiful Spring morning. Runners on these trails always encounter herds of eland, zebra and hundreds of springbok. No matter what distance you complete, every route is scenic and passes through pristine nature. Furthermore the routes offer a variety of thrilling surprises such as several waterholes, bird hides and even a replica traditional San village, not to mention a loo with a view. All this makes the

West Coast flower run such a unique event. This is ideal for the special runner who wants more than just running on gravel roads and jeep tracks. Runners, walkers, young and old, all are welcome. There is a 5km, 10km and a 21km trail for the more serious runners. Dogs on a lead are welcome. The facilities for runners include built ablutions with hot showers, a restaurant, shop, West Coast food stands, coffee bar, free wifi, and secure parking - and exclusively for runners, a free game drive. A Carnival of Wildflowers ARTICLE DWFS PR | PHOTOS DANIELA PHOTOGRAPHY

The theme of the 2019 Darling Wildflower Show is A Carnival of Wildflowers. Every year since 1917, there has been an exciting spring flower event in Darling, presented around the third weekend in September.

T

his is the time of year when most of the glorious wild flowers in the area are in bloom. The jolly sight of brightly coloured flowers everywhere, lends an optimistic carnival atmosphere to the town and it’s environs. The annual wildflower show should ideally reflect this rainbow coloured season in its presentation. This year the artist Nicolaas Maritz, an inhabitant of Darling, will be the show designer. Having designed and managed a number of local wildflower shows successfully in the past, he is an expert at creating interesting landscaping layouts. Maritz feels that the cause of local renosterveld conservation is best promoted through positive public reaction to attractive and informative displays at the flower show. As part of his design for the 2019 show, he has decided to feature bright flower arrangements strongly, but with a decidedly contemporary twist. Visitors may expect a few other surprises too, like the inclusion of a mythical Florasaurus, a lovable plant-loving dinosaur, playfully hiding in the shrubbery of one of the landscaped flower show sections.

The Flower Show will offer a variety of activities to entertain young and old. Your ticket includes entry to: • • • • •

the Landscaped Hall depicting the flowers of the area in their natural habitat, a Craft & Gourmet Food Market, a Veteran Tractor/Car Display an Entertainment Tent featuring live music from local acts safe and secure parking for vehicles,

With more than a hundred food and craft stalls, everyone’s taste buds and shopping needs will be catered for! Kids will have a weekend of fun in the playpark area with entertainment ranging from face-painting to rides, while adults can relax in the Mini Wine Route & Beer Tent. The show celebrates an integral part of the Cape Fynbos Kingdom comprised of Renosterveld, Rietveld, Sandveld, and Strandveld where more than 1200 different species of flowers can be found. Your entrance fee to the Darling Wildflower Show will help to conserve our endangered floral kingdom for future generations, so join us at the Darling Wildflower Show and contribute to conservation in our area! j
