Enjoy The Summer Issue and have a fantastic Festive Season! - from the I Love Yzer Team j.

PEDALLER PROVES HIS METTLE
Andrew Reaper
ARTICLE DONNAY TORR | PHOTOS SILVER DUNE PHOTOGRAPHY
To most of us couch potatoes, the idea of pedalling a bicycle non-stop for 24 hours sounds like a sadistic nightmare. But it’s all in an easy day’s work for cyclist Andrew Reaper. This year, this 20-year-old UCT-student won the solo division of the 24-hour Darling ttu MTB Enduro for the second year running. In 2017 he managed to complete 31 10-kilometer laps, and this year, an astonishing 33! Now that you’ve stopped feeling faint, take a moment to discover more about this promising athlete... WHEN DID THE CYCLING BUG BITE YOU?
WHAT KIND OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST?
I was three-and-a-half years old. I can’t remember much about learning how to ride, but I do remember my first ride down Silvermine Mountain on 12-inch wheels on an extremely windy day. It’s not the most pleasant memory, but it was definitely unforgettable, and I think of it every time I ride up the mountain. I started racing competitively from about grade 9.
Mountain biking, because I struggle to fully relax and enjoy road cycling as I’m always worried about my safety with cars and taxis. I really like being on the mountain or riding in the greenbelts. I love the steep technical downhills and single tracks we have all over Table Mountain, as well as the superb panoramic views. WHAT IS THE CYCLING GOAL YOU’VE REACHED THAT YOU
CAN YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST BIKE YOU EVER RODE?
ARE PROUDEST OF?
Yes, very clearly! It was a yellow Scott and weighed more than my father’s bike. My dad didn’t want to buy it for me because it weighed so much, but I insisted because I loved the yellow colour. These days, I have four (too many!) bicycles.
Winning the 2018 24-hour Darling ttu MTB Enduro and breaking the record is definitely my highlight so far. 24hour racing is unique, and it has its own set of physical and mental challenges that no other format of racing can offer.
8 THE SUMMER ISSUE 2018 j I LOVE YZER DARLING
A 24-HOUR RIDE SOUNDS INSANE: HOW ON EARTH DO YOU PREPARE FOR IT?
Loads of preparation is involved! First: I check my varsity timetable to see how many assignments I have in the week of and the week after the event. Secondly, I call my grandparents Doug and Patricia (my loyal 24-hour support crew) and ask them if they are available to bring their caravan and be my support crew for the weekend. They are the dream team when it comes to 24-hour races and have never let me down. After that I look at notes from my previous 24-hour events: the diet I followed, my performance during the race, what went wrong, and what I felt I could have done differently. Then I plan how I’d like to do the race. Then comes the training: mostly long hours in the saddle, particularly over weekends. This year I was extremely grateful to have a friend who is currently completing her honours in exercise science: she helped me with a diet plan, and she ensured that I had sufficient nutrient intake before, during and after the race. In the week leading up to the race I make sure that I get as much sleep and rest as possible and try to stay as relaxed as possible, as well as make sure that all of my varsity assignments are completed! I visit my physio, Mark Nathan, to ensure that my body is ready, and I send my bike in for a service at The Bike Park, who make sure that I have a faultless and clean bike for the event. The day before the event I head out to the venue with my grandparents and we set up camp. I also go for a route check to see if the route has changed at all. On race day I wake up and eat a massive breakfast, then I just chill until the race begins.

pain and tiredness out of my mind as much as possible and count down the hours until the race is over. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE ENDURO?
I enjoy the vibe of the event and the local community who are very involved. There are amazing people who come together to make this event happen, and they make it very enjoyable for me. This year the heat made it unexpectedly difficult. The average temperature for the first seven hours of the race was 35 degrees Celsius, and this meant that hydration and energy preservation became a priority for everyone racing. The strategy shifted from ‘racing’ to ‘survival’ for those first seven hours.
HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOURSELF DURING THE ENDURO?
To be honest, I ask myself that question, too! I mainly just focus on my goal and think of all the people who have supported me along the road to achieving it. My biggest motivation is to keep on riding until one or more of my competitors fall asleep. Once my competition falls asleep the race really starts, and I try to use that time to maximise the gap between myself and them. Sunrise motivates me too: the four hours before sunrise are by far the hardest, and I know that after the sun rises, I only have four hours left to go, so waiting for that sunrise motivates me a lot. At night I listen to music with one earpiece (so that I can listen to my breathing with the other ear). I can also receive phone calls through the earpiece from close friends and family when I need it the most. I try to stay as consistent as possible throughout the race, and conserve as much energy as possible. WHAT KINDS OF BOUNDARIES DO YOU HAVE TO OVERCOME?
The pain of my legs, cramping, keeping awake at night, and most importantly the chafe that comes with 24-hour racing! I also need to remain as focused as possible because the course is very technical, and crashes are common when you’re exhausted and can’t maintain focus. I try to block the
HOW DO YOU RECOVER AFTER A CHALLENGE LIKE THIS?
I get home and have a warm shower, a recovery meal, three glasses of rehydration powder and then sleep for as long as possible. I usually get to sleep at about 5pm after the race finishes, and then I wake up at 2pm the next day. Then I take the day off and stay in bed. I stay off the bike for about five days after the race and try to let my body recover until I can feel that I am ready to get back on the bike. Even when I am back on the bike, I keep things chilled for another week, and once I feel like I have recovered sufficiently then things go back to normal. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE TACKLE THE ENDURO?
The Enduro is one of the best organised events on the calendar, the scenery is fantastic, and the vibe at the event is unique. You can bring your family and camp for the weekend and enjoy what the venue has to offer. As a rider, you can make the event whatever you want it to be. You can choose when you want to ride, whether you want to ride on your own or in a team, if you want to sleep, when you want to sleep, and when you think it is time to call it a day and relax with a cold beer. No other event can offer so many options for the rider. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10 THE SUMMER ISSUE 2018 j I LOVE YZER DARLING 9

YOU MENTIONED FEELING UNSAFE ON ROADS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES CYCLING IN SOUTH AFRICA FACES?
Safety. On the road, cyclists still face issues with reckless drivers and a lack of respect for cyclists on the road in general. On the mountain, bike muggings have become extremely common, making many areas on Table Mountain a hotspot for crime. I do think that the country is working hard towards eliminating these issues, and I hope that one day cyclists can ride wherever and whenever without worrying about their safety. Another challenge which SA cycling faces is doping, which has recently caused a massive stir in the professional field. It is extremely sad to see some of the country’s top cyclists being bust, but thankfully there is an increasing awareness and response to this issue.

DO YOU WORK WITH ANY KIDS THAT HAVE INTERESTING STORIES TO TELL?
CYCLISTS OFTEN GET A BAD RAP – WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY TO PEOPLE WHO ARE HOSTILE TOWARDS CYCLISTS?
You need to understand that a cyclist is just another person, and that person may be a father, mother, brother, sister or anyone who is important to someone else. At the end of the day we are just humans, and everyone deserves equal respect no matter what sport they do. YOU ALSO WORK WITH YOUNG KIDS, TEACHING THEM HOW TO CYCLE – CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT MORE ABOUT THIS?
I am an ambassador for The Bike Park at Constantia Uitsig, and I also work for them as the resident kids’ skills coach. I coach kids on how to ride mountain bikes, as well as work on improving technical skills and the fundamental basics of the sport. I mostly do one-on-one private lessons as well as small group lessons, which take place at The Bike Park, and I also do lessons in Tokai and the surrounding area. Since I started coaching, I’ve worked with at least 40 kids, and I hope to expand my coaching when I have more time.
I hear some very interesting stories from the kids I coach, and I have a few who spend the whole lesson telling me stories... It keeps me very entertained! I have a number of kids who have improved dramatically with coaching, but the most important thing for me is that they have fun during lessons. I’ve had many kids experiencing difficulties in other aspects of their lives come to me, and it makes me incredibly happy to see that my lessons have been helping them through difficult times, whether it’s a break from those difficulties, or working through those difficulties by talking to me about them (which happens very often). I really enjoy helping kids through tough times. For many kids, mainstream school sports do not fulfil their needs, and seeing the mountain biking bug bite is awesome. For many of the kids I coach mountain biking is the only sport which they are really passionate about, and I try to build that passion. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CYCLING FOR KIDS?
The ‘modern child’ spends most of their lives in school and behind a phone or computer screen, and it’s a shame that many children have lost touch with the world and nature around them. I think that cycling is beneficial because it combines exercise with fresh air and the outdoors. It is the ultimate combination for health and development as a child, and also a sport that doesn’t have many of the risks of injury a sport such as rugby has. That also makes it very healthy without affecting growth. It’s the kind of sport that you can start at an early age and continue with until you are old. Not many sports can say that! I also think that a healthy body means a healthy mind, and for mental development it is vital. DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL HERO?

My Grandfather, Doug Wakeford. He has been a role model and inspiration to me since I was born. He is sporty, athletic and we share a lot of the same life values. He is 82 years old, and we still ride together when I get the chance. I hope to follow in his footsteps throughout my life. Having him on my support crew for 24-hour racing makes the event even more special.
INBOX 29 Aug 2018 Dear Eldré & Nadine, A big thank you to you both as well as the ILY Team for a wonderful evening you arranged last Friday here in Yzer. Like I have said before, you “sure know how to do it.” I had an absolute ball (like I think you noticed). Finally, all the best for the Voorkamerfest and soon after that the Flower Show, which I am looking forward to very much. Lots of love, Sandy WIlkins

16 Oct 2018 Dear David, Was really great chatting to you. My partner and I are really looking forward to the Yzerfontein Cycle Experience. I love ‘Life’ so this is going to be an exceptional ride for me – I celebrate being a survivor of cancer so October is my month, November being for ‘men’. But in fact for everyone who is going through cancer or who has survived cancer– please if you announce anything – say a good word for Cancer survivors – just a favour. I will be in pink – you will not miss me... Kind regards, Ingrid van der Merwe
QUICK QUESTIONS What do you enjoy most about cycling?
Being outdoors on my bike- there’s no time I feel freer than when I am on my bike. Also, the friends I have made through the sport and the places it has taken me.
PHOTO MICHELLE J PHOTOGRAPHY
And what do you like least?
The 4am alarm clock that goes off for early morning training. Trying to convince myself to wake up and get out of bed at 4am. The dark, freezing cold winter mornings. What’s been the biggest sacrifice you’ve had to make for your sport?
Sleep, my bank account and my ‘lazy time’.
Being so fit, how many beers does it take to get you tipsy?
Probably about 3 at the moment. Ha ha! What kinds of hobbies do you enjoy?

JAN CARSTENS ARTICLE CONTRIBUTORS JANET WITHINGTON | RIAAN NEETHLING
W
hen Riaan has been talking to local residents about ordinary people making a difference in Darling, the name of Jan Carstens often comes up as one who cares deeply about our community and especially our youth. Jan was born and grew up on Colenso Farm just outside Darling, one of six children. He attended the Koranrug Farm School but left after Grade 6 to work with his parents on the farm as an agricultural worker maintaining crops and tending livestock. He moved to town when he was 21 years although his parents, who gave him a strict upbringing, are still living on Colenso.

This is a gentle and serious man, and whilst we chatted his one daughter snuggled happily up to him in a way which clearly indicated that she adores and respects him. He loves his home, and his garden is amazing, and so he is still a farmer at heart. As a result, he grows vegetables and raises geese and pigs on land made available to emerging farmers, close to Darling. He visits his smallholding every day before and after work to look after his animals and vegetables and to ensure everything is in order. It is quite evident that family is very important to Jan but close on its heels is his passion for the game of rugby. When he speaks of this second love he becomes animated and the seriousness is replaced by smiles and laughter. He is now 44 years old but still played for the Darling Rugby Club A team earlier this year. He continues to play on Saturdays, but for the B team, training two nights each week and as committed as ever. What was evident in our interaction with Jan is that he is a happy human being and that he reflects a deep inner peace and contentment. He feels he is specially blessed and that there is nothing that he needs. There is an important lesson in this for so many people who have so much more but still feel unfulfilled. Go Jan go! Pirie-pirie...! j

Friederich’s Ataxia (FA) has become part of their family’s vocabulary. Friedreich’s Ataxia is an autosomal recessive inherited disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system. It manifests in initial symptoms of poor coordination causing walking and balance difficulties. It can also lead to scoliosis, heart disease and diabetes, but does not affect cognitive function. This means their brains are “A-okay” and that they are able to give people more information should they want to ask why both identical sisters are in wheelchairs.

These young ladies have been conquering many difficulties that FA has thrown their way and are continuing to do so daily. They are able to do things others do but just in a different manner. They are still able to enjoy dancing, swimming, cycling and have recently taken up yoga. The weekly highlight is with their physiotherapist, Clare, who is continuously giving them something new and exciting to do. There is no such thing as failure; you win or you learn. Giving up, is something these two young ladies will never do and they have now decided to enroll in one of the biggest cycling races in South Africa, The Cape Argus. How you may ask, are they going to manage that? And the answer is with the help of family and friends, and custom made back seats on two tandem bicycles. Since Annika and Chene are permanently in wheelchairs, they need a special seat with a back, and side support, for stability. The challenge will be to sit for 5+ hours with not even being able to get off the bicycle at any of the water points during the race. The cyclist on the tandem with them will have to balance for the both of them. We will have a team of riders with each tandem to provide help along the way, and their wheelchairs will be waiting at the finish. “We have developed a love for cycling over the years and this will be our biggest challenge yet.” Their goal is to create awareness for FA and to also prove to the world that limits are something you set for yourself. The one movement that the girls can do is pedal which is why cycling is the only sport someone with FA can participate in. This is usually with an adapted bicycle called a ”Catrike”. This is still a dream for them to each ride the Argus on their own Catrike. But that will stay a dream for now. j

Vir my was daardie “voorwerp” die Pelgrimsweg. En my oë loop oor. My inspirasie?

MEMORY ROAD
ARTICLE BOYTJIE BASSON
In our previous issue, we left Boytjie Basson chuckling about Tannie Doeks and her speedy silver Mercedes… Now continue your journey down memory lane with more special Yzerfontein moments from the 1970s.
I
n the mid-seventies, the R27 West Coast road was being built by two companies: Savage & Lovemore and Murray & Roberts. Each company was awarded the contract for half of the distance of the R27. One bit stretched from Cape Town to just south of Grotto Bay, and the other from Grotto Bay to Langebaan / Vredenburg. Today, the place where the two companies’ work finally met can still be seen as there is a marked difference in the colour of the road. Many contractors working on the northern section of the R27 (Savage & Lovemore) rented accommodation in Yzerfontein and lived here for the period during which the new road was under construction. Shortly after the road’s completion in 1976, the Government passed the new fuel laws and speed limits due to international sanctions against us. It was painstakingly slow to have to travel the new R27 at 70km/h to Cape Town and back! The southern part of the West Coast Road was completed first, so from Yzerfontein we could drive through Darling, past Mamre, skirt Atlantis and then travel down to the coast to where we would meet up with the brand new “Weskuspad” (as we all called it), and then on to Cape Town. Yzerfontein taught me some valuable lessons about respecting others. Life has a strange way of getting back at you. For years I had not given Martin Halvorsen, affectionately nicknamed Ysbeer and one of Yzerfontein’s best-known characters the necessary respect. I even taunted him – but never chancing a distance closer than 10 meters away from him... I knew that if he came for me, and I had a 10-metre head start, he would not be able to catch me. He was big and strong. A Western Province Craven Week rugby player. Immensely powerful and a few years older than me. A few years had passed since I had last taunted Martin and in my mind the taunting incidents had been long forgotten. Water under the bridge, I assumed. Then, one day, I strolled down to the beach to find a group of acquaintances standing around talking. I greeted everyone and joined in the conversation. A few minutes later, I found myself lying flat on my face after being given a proper slap to the back of my head! It was Martin. All this time he had remembered, and for many years had waited patiently for this chance. Respect was instant, and today we are close friends.

On another occasion, I was strolling along Beach road early one afternoon during the Christmas holidays of 1977. I was about halfway between the caravan park and the ablution block, hand-in-hand with a beautiful blonde girl called Willemien Brink. I noticed a big Mercedes speeding towards us, stopping in a cloud of dust. Behind the wheel was Nico Muis, future mayor of Darling. He shouted at me to get in the car as a fire had broken out on our farm. Being taken slightly aback, and probably also in a bit of shock from the news, I asked him whether he wanted me to put the fire out by urinating on it, but in slightly cruder words. I was only 17 years old and out of line. Nico Muis was furious at me and got Uncle Wynand Louw (Honkie) to drive me to the farm instead. A few years later I had taken a fancy to another, even prettier young blonde and fell head-over-heels in love with her. Her name was Este Smit. On my first visit to her house I knocked politely, and waited patiently for her to open the door. Instead it was opened by the Mayor of Darling whom I had been so rude to a few years before! I ended up marrying his daughter! In the years after that, I shared many a drink and good conversation with Nico Muis, but we never, ever touched on the happenings of that December afternoon in 1977. Access to 16 Mile Beach was still easy in the mid-seventies and at low tide the beach was still as wide and hard as a tarred road. There was no greater fun than to drive on the beach. At the time, there were three well-know local men in their early thirties named Boetman Loubser, Boetie Kraai (Kirsten) and Klaas Wium, and they each drove a Volvo 122S car. After sunset on Friday evenings, when the tide was low and their spirits high, they would gain access to the beach and race each other, spinning their wheels and broadsiding their cars to see who could cover the other person’s car with the most sand. That continued for a long period of time and only ended when Boetie Kraai arrived one weekend with a brand new Holden Monaco GTS. This ended the racing as the other two were now no match for him. The first proper full-time shop, or rather café, also opened during this time. It was a very basic café, and stocked with mostly sweets, cold drinks and ice cream and basic groceries. The first owner was a gentleman by the name of Oom Amos van Zyl. He originally came from the Hoedjiesbaai Hotel in Saldanha. He had been the manager there, and retired to Yzerfontein. His café was sold a few years later to James Hellyer and expanded. Much later, the well-known businessman Christo Wiese would buy the building and transform it into a beach house for him and his family. CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

YZER HISTORY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 18
The café was situated on the left-hand side of Main Road just below the hill as you enter Yzer. The café also had a license to trade in firearms, but there were never any guns or ammunition sold there. But rumour has it that James Hellyer had quite a large arsenal of weapons at his house, which was then just behind where Villa Pescatori is today. Years later, when I was in the Navy in Simon’s Town, I often saw the sad figure of James Hellyer, then a very skinny middle-aged man with long flowing hair, walking the roads of Kalk Bay. Sadly, he later committed suicide. Before the present NSR station was based locally here in the harbour, a ski boat on its way to Dassen Island during the Christmas holidays of 1979 developed engine problems during. It eventually washed ashore in Pearl Bay, on the Schaap Island side of Die Vleie. Die Vleie is descriptively named as that particular part of the beach is protected from the waves and swells by rocks forming a reef about 50 meters out to sea, which results in the water being as calm as a lake on the shore side. Now, the two beaches on either side of Yzerfontein differ vastly in characteristics. While 16 Mile Beach on the northern side is hard and wide, the beach south of Yzerfontein stretching up to the Koeberg Power Station is very soft and narrow. A 4x4 with the boat’s trailer was sent to collect the marooned boat. After initially succeeding in getting the boat on the trailer, the towing vehicle was unable to move it and kept getting stuck in the soft sand. A well-known local farmer then went to fetch his Nuffield tractor and offered his
help. On arriving at the scene, the tractor almost immediately got stuck in the soft sand to such a degree that it eventually rested on its undercarriage. In the meantime, the tide had come in and after a while engulfed the tractor while bystanders managed to save the 4x4. It was decided to leave the tractor and the ski boat to its own fate as nothing else could be done to save either – waves were by then breaking over both of them. Everybody went home exhausted, believing that it would be the last they saw of the tractor, the boat, and the trailer. Miraculously, the boat was still intact at sunrise the next morning and still on the trailer. Word quickly spread throughout Yzerfontein. So at low tide, and with the arrival of many more volunteers including a few extra 4x4s, they managed to move the trailer with the boat along the beach to safety at Schaap Island after much digging, pulling and pushing. A distance of about a kilometre! Unfortunately, the tractor could not be saved. With time and years gone by, it has sunk deeper and deeper into the sand and nowadays can only be seen every few years when rough seas caused by passing cold fronts washes it open during the winter months. The last time that the stricken tractor was visible above the sand was in October 2017, with just the wheels, a tow rope and a small part of its upper side protruding above the sand. A few weeks later it was buried again. To be continued… The next chapter will be the 80s onwards, when we got up to some real mischief as young men! j MY YZERFONTEIN MEMOIRS Order a copy of MY YZERFONTEIN MEMOIRS by WJ Boytjie Basson directly from Boytjie or buy your copy at the I Love Yzer shop for only R250. ’n Pasteistorie ARTIKEL & FOTO’S RONELLE NEL
My ouers (Nellie en oorlede Hennie) het Nellie’s Kitchen so sewe jaar gelede by Ntida mark begin. WANNEER EN WAAR WAS JULLE EERSTE MARK?
22 THE SUMMER ISSUE 2018 j I LOVE YZER DARLING
KAN JY ’N SNAAKSE OF ROERENDE OOMBLIK BY ’N MARK DEEL?

A BEER FOR THE FUTURE ARTICLE & PHOTOS DARLING BREW
Darling Brew becomes Africa’s first carbon-neutral brewery.
I
f Darling Brew isn’t your favourite beer brewery just yet, they should be after their announcement in April this year. In a first for Africa, this Darling-based craft brewery is now officially a carbon-neutral brewery. Darling Brew calculated their carbon footprint by means of a greenhouse gas audit, and offset this footprint through impactChoice, a provider of end-to-end environmental sustainability solutions, who also ensure the emissions are offset via responsible carbon capturing and reduction projects. The brewery expects to offset a total of 687.96 tons of CO2 over the next year – the equivalent of what 17 829 tree seedlings growing for 10 years can eliminate! Darling Brew has been on their sustainability journey since opening in 2010, when they created their line of craft beers that drive awareness on animal conservation in Africa. In 2016, they released Africa’s first carbon neutral beer, Blood Serpent, with the intention of later extending it across the range. Blood Serpent was a catalyst within the African beer industry and was celebrated for being an innovation, not only within the craft beer industry, but towards sustainability in Africa. “It’s not about doing what we like with our operations and just offsetting our impact,” says Kevin Wood, owner and founder of Darling Brew. “It’s about our commitment to continuously reducing our carbon footprint
as much as possible while using the offsetting process as a way of further redressing our impact.” Darling Brew have teamed up with sustainability consultants Ecolution Consulting who, in addition to guiding the brewery through the carbon offsetting process, are working with Darling Brew to reduce their water and energy consumption, as well as the brewery’s waste to landfill percentage. “We are identifying short and long-term strategies to ensure that Darling Brew continues to travel further along their sustainability journey,” says André Harms, sustainability engineer and founder of Ecolution Consulting. “This started with the procedure of tracking and recording consumption and waste data to ensure that real progress is being made.” The brewery openly and prominently displays their monthto-month statistics on their water, waste, energy and carbon use, and want to include Darling Brew’s patrons in their sustainability journey. They’ve also implemented a series of green initiatives in the brewery, including water-efficient fittings, waterless urinals, ongoing recycling and food waste management and the use of upcycled furniture and recycled wood in the brewery and taste room area. “We are excited to progress on this journey,” says Kevin Wood. “Going carbon neutral is a massive step for us, but certainly not the last.” j

WINE
DARLING DOOR TO DOOR ARTICLE | PHOTOS CHARLES WITHINGTON | THE DARLING WINE SHOP
A
s rainfall is to growing vines, so are feet to growing customers at Cellar Doors or retail outlets like the Darling Wine Shop. Interaction with one’s customers is hugely important in building ongoing relationships. It is thus understandable that at first glance “on-line” shopping might be seen as a major threat. Look closely however, and herein lies an opportunity; many of the “feet” passing through Darling may not be back for some time – so we need to be able to offer the opportunity of getting “Darling” to their homes, allowing them re-live some of the memories of their visit. Ever since the Darling Wine Shop opened it has offered national “on-line” delivery of the widest range of Darling wines in the country. From last year this offer has been extended to the UK enabling some of Darling’s leading wines to be delivered to any address in mainland UK and normally within 48 hours of the order being place online. Even better – by the time you read this the Wine of the Month Club will have a brilliant selection of Darling goodies on offer for Christmas gifting and hopefully on an ongoing basis. Yes, you can order Darling Sweet Toffees, Kotie’s Darling Gourmet Mushrooms, The Flying Pig’s bacon jam, Hugh’s original Darling Fudge and our very special Darling Meat Market biltong – all available to be delivered nationwide. One thing however cannot be done online and that is tasting! During the Christmas season we always have something in the Shop open for you to taste and now showing are some of the new additions to Darling Cellars’ GUSTUS range - a Pinot Noir and Bukettraube. You will also find other interesting wines as part of our “Wine of the Day” programme.

glasses. Costing less than a good bottle of wine, they are both elegant and durable and should last you for years, providing enjoyment with every sip. STAR OF THE SHOW
Each and every bottle of Darlington Gin and Voorkamer Brandy is HAND LABELLED. This most skilled and finicky operation is done by a young lady, Keisha Willemburg. For nearly three years Keisha has been doing this job with extraordinary competence and quiet diligence; others have tried and no one has succeeded to such a level of perfection. This is an opportunity to thank Keisha for being a valuable part of the team. j

KAIJAIKI’S coming of age
T
his year, Kaijaiki Country Inn, a charming and iconic restaurant, guesthouse and coffee shop, turned twenty one. We have built her, nourished her and loved her until what she is today – a polished gem that has offered us a magical, lucrative lifestyle. But let me start at the beginning. I was eleven years old when I was first introduced to Yzerfontein. I was born and educated in the Cape, but then moved away and eventually settled in White River in Mpumulanga. There I stayed for sixteen years, teaching. It was there that I met my husband, Rene, a Hollander. Rene, a skilled chef, as enthusiastic as a Labrador and bubbling with joie de vivre, supported my dream and understood my yearning for the Cape. I have faith in my dreams, so the stage was set for the birth of my brainchild, Kaijaiki. All the magical ingredients were mixed together and in October 1997 Kaijaiki – meaning small, humble dwelling – opened its doors for business. The decor of the restaurant tells the history of our two irrespective families, a culmination of our ancestral histories, in the form of old photographs, yellowed letters and other paraphernalia. The ratings and reviews we received through the years, testify to the high quality of service and dedication we rendered. In this magical space of stories and food, people from different cultures and countries, enjoyed meals and talked together like old friends while the fire crackled in the
fireplace. This added to the feeling of homeliness and cosiness. Through the years our guests enjoyed the good natured bantering between the Hollander and myself. As the date approached for Kaijaiki’s coming of age, a fresh idea was formed. The time had arrived for Kaijaiki to take steps of independence. Rene and I have done the job of rearing a fine business we are so proud of. Twenty one is the number of perfection by excellence. We have memories in abundance of this special place. Therefore we are proud to announce that at the end of January 2019, the Hollander and I will say our goodbyes to Kaijaiki Country Inn. The end of a memorable era. We wish the new owners the very best. They have great plans for our girl and we will observe the progress and prosperity like proud parents. But that’s a story for another day and another article... j

Ouma Nettie se Appeltert ARTIKEL & FOTO’S NADINE PRETORIUS RESEP JEANETTE LE ROUX
E
Bak was nie Ouma Nettie se sterk punt nie. Ouma Nettie se melkkos, soetpatat en appeltert was my gunstelingdisse.

How to have a HAPPY &REVITALISING Festive Season ARTICLE PAULA JANSE VAN RENSBURG SOUL COACH - YOOM WELLNESS
W
e are officially in that time of the year - the silly season. The time when stress levels increase, bodies are tired, social demands deplete us, overindulging is the order of the day, and our relationship with money wobbles. But this year the festive season does not need to leave you depleted and depressed. You can start 2019 refreshed, inspired and ready to live your best life. I have put together some easy-to-follow pointers to support you so that you have the best holiday yet, and it all starts with honouring yourself. Yes you heard me - making yourself top priority. Some might find this statement selfish but it’s the best gift you can give yourself, your loved ones and the world. Put yourself first. The following tips are here to keep you grounded, sane and energised. Be kind and gentle to yourself by: RESTING OFTEN Yes, the festive season is all about family, connection and social gatherings but this is what leads to exhaustion. I want to encourage you to rest often, spend time in nature and reconnect with yourself. A good book and a cup of tea is good for your soul.
HEALTH CHOOSING YOUR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES WISELY You do not have to attend every social gathering that you get invited to. Choose carefully who you want to invest your energy into. These social activities can either leave your energy expanded, or depleted. So before committing, choose who you want to exchange energy with and be sure that it’s with people who inspire and expand your soul. NOURISHING YOUR BODY WITH HEALTHY FOOD & WATER The added perk of the holidays is all the indulging, from delicious dishes to desserts to decadent chocolates and cookies. Be sure to enjoy every minute of the indulging and do not talk badly to yourself when you dish up a second helping of the trifle but rather commit to nourish your body with healthy treats like fresh fruits, salads and lots of water in between all the indulging days. BEING PRESENT IN EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO One can get so caught up in the festivities that you often find yourself rushing from one place to another, constantly planning the next activity. I want to encourage you to be mindful and every now and then just stop, breathe and take it all in. Take time out to reflect on the challenges you have conquered in 2018, the highlights and the let downs, all the experiences that filled your year and brought you to this very moment. Give thanks for happy times and the sad times because all of this shaped who you are today. I wish you a memorable and blessed festive season and remember that ultimately it is all about balance. May you start 2019 with hope and courage knowing that you have got this! j

FEEDBACK | VOORKAMERFEST 2018
T
he 13th annual Voorkamerfest in Darling took place during the first weekend of September. Regular and new fans were enthralled by this year’s ‘comeback’ line-up – public feedback was heart-warming and inspired us all to get cracking on planning for 2019 already! What a privilege to partner with The Fugard Theatre, Kyknet, Wesgro, Rupert Musiekstigting, Engen, Carolyn Steyn and Darling Businesses – making it possible for Voorkamerfest to continue working towards expanding the impact of the performing arts in our local community and further afield. Aside from essential funding needed in order for the Voorkamerfest to survive, this community-run festival can only succeed if key residents and performers are willing to give of their time, talent, energy and spirit –Darling’s Voorkamerfest is heralded as being something that highlights the very best of what is South African. Thanks to a revamped country market, coordinated for the first time by the I Love Yzer team, locals and visitors alike flocked to Evita se Perron to absorb a true South African and country village spirit. Aside from the diverse shows and performances, the food and market stalls were
constantly abuzz, complimenting all that Voorkamerfest brought to Darling after a two-year break. Each year the village comes together and 21 home owners throughout Darling volunteer their homes to host the theatre productions. This year was no different - a warm Darling welcome was guaranteed at each location... this is the charm and secret ingredient of The Voorkamerfest – the coming together and sharing of live theatre performances under the umbrella of the arts...thanks to every 2018 performer. Be sure to keep your finger on our pulse for Voorkamerfest 2019 info and ink the following dates in: 6 - 8 Sep 2019 j

SUMMER TRENDS
FOR THE SOUTH AFRICAN CLIMATE ARTICLE DAVE NEMETH TREND FORECASTER PARTNER IN HAUS OF DECOR
W
ith the holidays upon us and the incredible weather that South Africa offers at this time of year, most homeowners want their houses to enhance the feeling of summer and all that it has to offer. South Africa has a climate and light very different to that of Europe and the United States and when it comes to trends it is important to not just follow those in international markets but rather those that will work specifically well in the South African context. I always use the example of yellow, which is often featured in annual trends but due to our bright light can be exceptionally overpowering when used excessively in an interior. A colour like yellow is best suited in moderation for décor items and smaller focus items. Blue and white continues to dominate trend pages and is a highly suitable combination for the local market, so it is no wonder that so many holiday homes continue to go with this colour scheme. The introduction of grey as well as natural wood into the scheme has given it a more sophisticated feel and is greatly suited to residential homes. The tones and hues of the blues vary greatly and even shades of teal can be used to replace the blue for an updated version of this simplistic yet effective colour scheme. Florals are also making a comeback in a variety of forms and although they have moved away from the traditional floral prints, there is a strong move towards more botanical illustrations and patterns. The market has recently been flooded with ferns and palm leaves and this will continue to remain popular with homeowners in 2019. As far as furniture goes, minimalist styling representative of the Scandinavian style remains popular but a new introduction is the reappearance of cane furniture, especially for accent pieces and occasional furniture. Outdoor patio furniture manufactured in polypropylene is also emulating the cane look which is a definite move away from the woven furniture that previously dominated the market for many years. It is true that design styles, similar to fashion, have cycles, and items that once seemed outdated, tie in with current directions and cane is one of those elements that will dominate for several years to come. Patios overall will always be a focus area due to the amount of time we spend entertaining and simply relaxing outdoors. The focus is still on an integration between indoor and outdoor spaces and as much attention is given to external patios as is given to formal lounges and living areas. We are finding that accessories and décor
elements are becoming increasingly important in these areas and items include outdoor rugs, oversized lanterns and even mirrors. Being able to extend the use of these outdoor spaces is essential to most households and the introduction of fire pits is also on the increase. The addition of these elements means that time can be spent comfortably under the stars right up until mid-winter. It is also a great solution for those who can’t warrant the expense of having slide away glass facades or roll down awnings. South Africans will always have a passion for braaiing, but due to the popularity of sophisticated cooking and elegant dinner parties, the move is towards more functional cooking spaces. These spaces which obviously include braais, also include elements such as gas stoves, under counter fridges, pizza ovens and even microwaves. This allows for all the cooking functions to take place completely outdoors without having to set foot into the interior kitchen. It is vital to have a home that is suited to the climate and light of the country in which it is situated and with this awareness we are seeing great trends that are original and centered around the South African lifestyle. In all aspects, local design is being taken very seriously all over the world and I think these strong local trends will have an effect on many other countries that enjoy great summers. j Haus flyer R_03.pdf

NATURE
COASTAL EROSION
ARTICLE TREVOR RENWICK PHOTOS YZERFONTEIN CONSERVANCY
Is Yzerfontein also being washed away?
T
he global erosion of beaches and sand dunes seems to have accelerated over the last 14 years. It was first noticed in Australia in 2004 and was noticed in South Africa a few years later on the east coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Recently, we have seen the effects of erosion in our own Yzerfontein with huge swathes of beach and dune being washed away in a matter of months. It seemed to start with the big storm of June 2017 and it is estimated that we have lost 30m of sand dune as well the front section of the lovely Strandkombuis Restaurant to the elements. Nobody is sure exactly what the root cause is, although all the evidence points to climate change. Most experts believe that increased wave height and interval are the primary causes with subtle changes in ocean currents adding to the problem. But what has caused these changes? The sea levels are only rising at 1.4mm per year, which is bad news for the world in 200 years time, but is not thought to be a contributor to the increased coastal erosion being seen around the world. It is generally understood that climate change has increased the severity and frequency of weather events and storms in particular and it is these increasingly severe storms that are causing the increasing wave heights and changes in the wave interval. Some regions tried to fight this erosion and spent millions of dollars trucking in vast quantities of sand only to see it all washed away in the next storm. So it looks like we are going to have to live with this increase in beach and dune erosion and can only hope that the root causes are eliminated or just go away. Either way we are going to see our coastline change dramatically over the next few years and there is little, if anything, we can do to change this apart from making every effort to cut our greenhouse gas emissions. j

urrently on at the Toffee Gallery at Darling Sweet is an exhibition of handcrafted toys by Darling resident Jacqui van Staden. This is the perfect exhibition for the holiday season thanks to the playful wit of these beautifullycrafted colourful creatures, all made by Jacqui herself. The incredibly talented maker of these creatures refers to them as her “fantastic monsters”, hence the title of the show. For Jacqui, who is an avid collector of toys herself, making toys has been an adventurous journey that started with her love for drawing and illustration whilst still at art school. She used drawing to invent imaginative, outrageous characters and then dreamt up stories around these, which she illustrated. “I’ve always had a fascination for all things out of the ordinary and I draw great inspiration from reading and looking at fantasy novels and illustrations,” she says. The monster as character-type has always resonated with Jacqui, as she explains: “I love everything about the monster. By Google definition it is ‘a large, ugly and frightening imaginary creature’, but in my own monsters I combine these extreme qualities with more gentle human-like traits, like curiosity and charm”. She goes on to say: “Giving objects human after by both children and collectors of handmade toys. characteristics allows people to relate to it, even though the Jacqui designed and personally crafted ten unique oversize character still has the head of a traditional monster.” Fantastic Monsters especially for this exhibition. ARTIKEL PETER PENTZ
M
Die skoolkonserte was altyd ʼn hoogtepunt. Liezel Engelbrecht.
Daardie maskers is nooit weer gedra nie!

PETS
The Ins & Outs of HEATSTROKE ARTICLE DR ROUXLENE SHERIDAN
S
PHOTO NADINE PRETORIUS
ummer is here and a common issue that all caring pet owners should be aware of is heatstroke or heat stress. Unfortunately, many pet owners do not even realise that their cats and dogs can overheat when the weather is hot, and may only seek treatment at the eleventh hour.
WHAT IS HEATSTROKE?
Heatstroke is a state of hyperthermia (elevated core body temperature above the normal range) resulting in heat injury to tissues. Heatstroke occurs when heat generation exceeds the body’s ability to lose heat. Heatstroke is a very serious, life threatening condition: it can cause damage to your pet’s internal organs, sometimes to the point where they stop functioning and can be rapidly fatal – it requires urgent treatment.
• •
WHAT ARE THE MAIN PREDISPOSING FACTORS FOR HEATSTROKE?
External factors include: • a warm/hot, humid environment with inadequate ventilation (e.g. a dog left in an unventilated room/car) • inadequate shade • inadequate drinking water • excessive exercise Internal factors include: • obesity • brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like Pugs, English bulldogs, French bulldogs, Persian and Himalayan cats • breathing difficulties/respiratory disease, like laryngeal paralysis or collapsing trachea • heart problems/cardiovascular disease • neurological disease • age extremes (young or old) • thick/long hair coat • excessive exercise • dehydration WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
DOGS: Dizziness, vomiting, little to no urination, fast panting, bright red tongue, either dark red or pale gums, diarrhoea, weakness and lethargy, dazed and confused appearance, drooling or excessive saliva, uncoordinated movement and fainting or collapse. CATS: Dizziness, vomiting, little to no urination, fast panting, bright red tongue, either dark red or pale gums, diarrhoea, weakness and lethargy, anxiety (often presents itself by the cat pacing a lot), bleeding from the nose, seizures and muscle tremors. HOW CAN I PREVENT HEATSTROKE?
•
Have a cool, well-ventilated space for your pet. Good ventilation is critical because many animals lose heat by panting (evaporative cooling) which relies on good air flow. Outdoor pets should also always have access to shade.
• •
All pets should have access to plenty of cool, fresh and clean drinking water at all times. Never leave your pet in a car as temperatures rise extremely quickly even on mild temperature days and can kill pets rapidly. Avoid exercising animals in hot weather. Avoid hot sand, concrete, asphalt areas or any other areas where heat is reflected and there is no access to shade. A nice rule of thumb is: Put the back of your hand on the pavement, and if you can’t keep it there for five seconds, it’s too hot for your pup’s feet.
WHAT DO I DO WHEN I SUSPECT MY PET HAS HEAT STROKE?
•
Remove your pet from the hot environment immediately. Do not give the dog aspirin to lower its temperature as this can lead to more problems. • Apply or spray cool water onto the animal’s fur and skin. Then apply a fan/fanning to maximise heat loss. You can also place a towel on his back and continue to soak the towel and your pet in cold water. If the animal is unconscious, make sure no water enters the nose or mouth, because this can lead to aspiration pneumonia. • Wetting down the area around your pet can also help. • Let your pet drink as much cool water as he wants without forcing it to drink. • Then take your pet to the nearest Veterinarian immediately. Heatstroke is an emergency – always see a vet. Heatstroke in dogs and cats can cause unseen problems, such as swelling of the brain, kidney failure, intestinal bleeding and abnormal clotting of blood. On the way to the veterinarian, travel with the windows open or the air conditioner on. Even if your pet looks like they may be recovering or you just suspect they might have heatstroke they should still always be checked by a vet. A vet will check your pet’s body temperature and vital signs and then instigate emergency treatment which may include: • putting your pet on a drip • cooling treatments e.g. cooling enemas • supplemental oxygen • medication as required • blood tests to check organ function • ongoing monitoring and treatment as required. j THE SUMMER ISSUE 2018 j I LOVE YZER DARLING 45

Shwe-Shwe! Mandela Madiba
ART EXHIBITION ARTICLE & PHOTOS ADRI VAN ASWEGEN-JANSE VAN VUUREN ART CLASSES AND LIFE SKILLS | THE DARLING TRUST
The Darling Trust celebrates a hundred years!
I
t was with great joy that The Darling Trust celebrated the life and legacy of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The exhibition consisted of art works that were created by the children of the community involved in The Darling Trust Art and Life Skills programme under the guidance of Adri van Aswegen-janse van Vuuren. The Breytenbach Sentrum in Wellington was approached as an ideal venue to give an Afrikaans voice to the venture. We were grateful that they embraced the project with great enthusiasm. The exhibition opened on the 14th July 2018. We were privileged to have Denis Goldberg (a comrade of Mandela, and one of the only two surviving Rivonia trialists) as opening speaker. He told the children that they must remember what Mandela said and did. Education should supersede freedom - not the other way around.
ART CLASS WITH DENIS GOLDBERG
The art works depicted a passionate and intimate journey. The process was multi-layered. The experiences the children had over years enabled them to weave their own Madiba narrative and to express it by using different media. (One such experience was the visit to Robben Island.) At the end of the opening Adri read an ode to Mandela. A flock of doves were released as symbol of peace and freedom - with a sense of destiny and belonging. Our hope with this exhibition was to contribute meaningfully to the greater kaleidoscope of the South African landscape. Since the exhibition, wings have been added to the project: James Fernie of Uthando, has bought a substantial amount of the art work - which he sends as gifts to top donors of community projects, locally as well as globally. j

It is remarkable that despite the 22 years in prison and many other challenges, Denis still regards ‘Life as truly Wonderful’! He shared that one of the hardest aspects of imprisonment was that you never saw children. Like Madiba, it was therefore amazing to witness his love for children and how he immediately connected with them. They adored ‘oom Denis’ and said that they will never forget the day. The aim of the exhibition was to acknowledge the life of Madiba and to give meaning to the values that he stood and lived for. The children were guided to embrace these values, and to take a stand for what is right. This was portrayed in a group art work - with the underlying statement: ‘We are not victims, but overcomers’. The shweshwe cloth which is so typically African is colourful, rhythmic and exciting. It reminds us of Madiba’s famous colourful shirts. He lived with joy! His ability to keep going was remarkable. Metaphorically speaking, he never stopped dancing!

TOURISM
THE PEARL OF THE WEST COAST
ARTICLE & PHOTO YZERFONTEIN TOURISM
Y
zerfontein is one of the most unique places on our West Coast. This beautiful beach town has many green belt areas, which are designated tracts of largely undeveloped wild land between the residential areas. These areas add to Yzerfontein’s attractions as they not only allow wild life to live undisturbed, but help a person feel at one with nature. We have spectacular trails on which to enjoy our beautiful flowers, especially in the Spring, sometimes with benches where one can rest and relax in the fresh salt air and admire the amazing scenery. Yzerfontein’s 16 Mile Beach is the longest uninterrupted beach in South Africa. Our town is unique with its wild flowers, and species and colours to dazzle. Our quiet harbour has the highest lookout point of any other on the West Coast. Swinging benches accommodate those who want to enjoy the view, whether admiring the sunset or dreaming in the sun. We have wonderful B&B’s, self-catering houses and apartments, farm accommodation, camping facilities, great restaurants and coffee shops. There are special menus and attractions over the festive season to make your holiday a memorable one. Swemgat is a natural rock pool that has been used and enjoyed in the summer by families over the years. Most of our wild flowers grow around this area and make it a stunning picnic spot. Our Flora and Fauna is our pride and joy for Yzerfontein and its residents. Ostriches are frequently seen roaming the green belt areas and enjoying the cool ocean air. Whales may be spotted in the months from July to December breeching
and calving around our shores. These gentle giants often give amazing displays with the beautiful Dassen Island in the background. The busy December holiday season is a haven for those who come to relax and enjoy all Yzerfontein has to offer. Many activities are planned throughout the December/ January Holiday Season: • 15/16 Dec: Snoek Classic at the Harbour • 17 & 18 Dec: Dit & Dat Mark at the Yzerfontein Recreation Hall • 19 Dec: Dutch Reformed Church Bazaar • Stranddienste is here with us from 16 - 26 Dec to entertain the kids • 21 Dec: I j Yzer Feesmark at Strandkombuis • 22 Dec: Carols by Candle Light at the Harbour with Nadine Blom • 29 Dec: Potjiekos Competition at Yzerfontein Sport and Recreational Club • 31st Dec: New Year’s Eve Dance in the Yzerfontein Recreation Hall to end the year in style! Please feel free to visit the Yzerfontein Tourism office, situated at the Municipal building near the Harbour, where we are situated on the rocks. j
