NSRI DANS The colours of darling from con meyer
The 97th Darling Wildflower Show was held during the 3rd weekend of September 2014 and acclaimed as the best show ever by visitors. The Darling Wildflower Society (celebrating its Centenary in 2015) has had the privilege of presenting this show continuously for the last 97 years to raise funds to conserve the flora of the Darling District for future generations. The Wildflower Show showcases
the richness and diversity of the Darling Yzerfontein district covering the Renosterveld, Sandveld, Strandveld and Vlei areas. Also on show was a spectacular display of Orchids from Duckit Orchid Nurseries. At the show you had the oppertunity to take the very popular tractor ride into the prestine vlei outside Oudepost, only open to the public during the show. Thank you to all visiting the best Wild Flower Show! j

For those of you that can’t live without their social media or the occasional email, Yzerfontein and Darling has free WIFI at selected venues. Look out for the BFound posters and connect! We are proud to welcome Simone van der Merwe to our team as the BFound representative. We were overwhelmed with gratitude when we received 2 awards at the West Coast Tourism Awards. We won in the Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur category and received runner up for Tourism Event for the 2013 I j Yzer Feesmark. Don’t forget to join us for the Feesmark on the 20th of Dec at Delarey!

Oppikoppi, Skouspel, vertonings oorsee – Valiant is dáár. Valiant se reaksie was tipies: “Vir my sal dit vanselfsprekend ‘n pluimpie wees, maar ek beywer my nou nie daarvoor nie.

The Holiday Issue 2014/2015
Dis ‘n soort afsluiting vir my.”

Gebroke liefde is so baie om jou. Vrek, as jy weer sien, is iemand se hart gebreek.” Wees considerate. Moenie selfsugtig wees nie. Elkeen het ‘n storie. Almal is iemand.” Valiant skryf dikwels ná sy optredes, wanneer dit lank reeds donker is. “Dan is daar niks wat my steur nie,” verduidelik hy. “Die skryf kom en gaan. Daar gaan partykeer maande verby – soms ‘n jaar – voordat ek weer iets skryf. Party songs is anders, soos Eye Shadow... Dit is miskien binne ‘n halfuur of ‘n uur klaar. “Ek is op ‘n manier amper ‘n closet stand-up comic,” sê hy.
“ ‘n Mens groei mos. Jou belangstellings verander. Valiant se lys is lank.

Dis magic, man.”

Ouens soos Bacchus Nel, Gian Groen, Andries Bezuidenhout, Farryl Purkiss, Mr Cat and the Jackal... Daar is darem ‘n verskriklike spul slegte musiek in Afrikaans.” “Daar’s twee belangrike goed. Jy moet dit régtig wil doen. Dit moet jou absolute passie wees. Glo in jouself, en al daai clichés. Want dis tough. Dis tough daar buite.
Wonderlike herinneringe. Die landskap en die lig en die see, en natuurlik die mense, lok my altyd terug. Het jy ‘n gunsteling dorp of -strand in hierdie geweste?

K
yk, kreefstories is altyd groot stories. Lekker stories. Gevaarlike stories.
Ek kook altyd my krewe in ’n klein bietjie seewater vir tien minute (die beste is in ’n melkkan).

Rudi Rogers NSRI Beroep:
Finansiering in bouhandel.
Getroud/Kinders:
Enkellopend sonder kinders.
Hoe lank bly jy al op Yzerfontein? 8 Jaar.
‘n Opregte Weskus snoekbraai. (Verkieslik een wat jyself vars gevang het).
Hoe lank is jy al betrokke by die NSRI?
7 ½ jaar.

WEST COAST IN STYLE
The essence of spacious, laidback beach-house design
T
by Jacqui Bez & Sam Muir
ucked away in a corner of Yzerfontein, behind the wild costal dunes of the pristine Sixteen Mile beach with its uninterrupted views, this modern yet cozy holiday house epitomizes tranquil summer days, where memories can be formed and family living is the key ingredient. The client, Mariaan and Pieter, were clear in their brief from inception: they required a house that could maximize the kuier factor. They wanted to share their love of West Coast living and outdoor lifestyle with dear family and friends. This relaxed way of life includes savoring the local wines and fresh fish from the Yzerfontein fishing nets on the braai. Other favorites include lazy lunches at The Standkombuis just a stones throw away. Or afternoons of treasured whale watching, along the extensive stretch of beach historically known as Whale Beach. With all this at your doorstep it’s no wonder that they chose this costal holiday town for out of town breaks, and eventual retirement. Designed by Jacqui Bez, from MINC Design, (formerly know as Furious Design) this unpretentious, relaxed holiday home is a contemporary interpretation of Cape vernacular, and is positioned in an L-shape layout with its back to the South Easter. At its core is a protected central courtyard, with a covered veranda and braai area overlooking the wild costal dune landscape. Complete with a cocktail pool that has a wide seating area around it, this courtyard is the hub of the house and the base for alfresco lunches and lazy summer cocktails. Inside, the lofty church-style double volume living space, is seamlessly integrated with the modern open plan kitchen, connecting itself to the easy-living lounge with large open fireplace and outside veranda. The natural tones and simplicity of the screeded floors accentuate the laid-back beach house style. The design allows natural light to abundantly flow Photographs by NiÍl Leach
throughout the house, and the tall timber and glass doors open out onto the rolling dune views. As a result the outdoor space is a vital part of the design. On the ground floor, four family bedrooms also all lead out onto the sheltered courtyard, allowing for the whole family to be integrated into the central living area. The upstairs main bedroom is situated in the loft space of the house, with a private open terrace, which showcases the beautiful views of the wild costal dune landscape, and glimpses of the west coast untamed ocean. The focus for the interior of the home was on low-key comfort, with the emphasis on texture within a neutral colour palette. Using some of the existing furniture, Sam Muir from MINC Design created a modern yet cozy interior with soft, comfortable flop in sofas complimented with plumped up cushions. By adding natural linens, soft woven throws and accents of charcoal into the neutral tones, they created a spacious, laidback interior with a touch of sophistication. In addition to the fabric textures, rough timber accessories and crates added a hint of rustic to the light and breezy atmosphere. Using a combination of all these design elements, MINC Design has successfully created a restful, spacious and laidback space that is the essence of what a relaxed holiday-cottage should be. j MINC Jacqui Bez j +27 82 423 0900 j jacqui@minc.co.za Sam Muir j +27 84 834 8431 j sam@minc.co.za www.minc.co.za

Tuinmaak op
Yzerfontein O
PERMANENT of VAKANSIE?

ith a 12 years shipboard career on board cruise liners, I never expected that I would end up doing what I’m into now. My venture in markets started with Tales of the Sea. I made crafts with all the driftwood I collected from the beach and did my first market in Dec 2013 trading at Club Mykonos. My venture with my crafts did not last, so the idea for Asian Bites came into full view. My goal was to introduce Asian Cuisine into the SA palette. Asian Bites officially started at Denlyn Park in Langebaan and since then I’ve never looked back. I also started cooking for locals, most of them are either too sick to cook, recuperating from an illness or just want to try something different. My husband and I try our best to present Asian street food at its best, from the streets of Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul and my Manila. I‘m always trying out new recipes which will be more appealing to the locals. Fresh ingredients are a big factor and I try my best to prepare everything fresh and organic, but finding the right ingredients is a challenge. My market day starts at 4 am, preparing all my raw ingredients and then cooking them. The one thing most traders fear is the uncertainty of the success of a particular market. I love trading at markets because of meeting new people; the new friendships are priceless. For those who are thinking about becoming a trader, it requires a lot of preparation, dedication, time, patience, trial and error and yes, money as an initial investment. Also, for a married woman like me, having a husband who’s ready to give his 101% support is a must! My dream is for my adoptive SA to enjoy the simpleness yet intriguing taste of Asian Cuisine. I will be conducting private cooking class for whoever is open for an experience of creating a homely Asian dish.
Quick Bio: Exactly 2 ½ years ago, I decided to stop working onboard and was determined to find my footing in the real world. I have a diploma in Hotel & Restaurant Management, earned in a Government University in the Philippines; my specialization was concentrated on Management and Catering. j Where to find ASIAN BITES: I j Weskus Market j Every 1st Sunday of the month. History
Yzerfontein Hawe sedert 1948
deur Pietie Burger
I

wine SO MUCH MORE
TO ENJOY! by Charles Withington
T
hirty years ago and when we were still in isolation, and probably as a result of this, many of the winemakers had a wannabe approach. Someone would present something like a trendy Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand proclaiming this is the style South Africa should aim for – why? It was internationally acclaimed, and we should be benchmarking this too. France was considered outdated, the Aussies and rest of the New World were the way to go! It is so true, when we freed Nelson Mandela, we freed ourselves too! As a nation we gained pride and confidence and this translated so much into our wines. Now we want our wines to have our own identity - not entirely New World (well, we were making wines 200 years before Australia!) and not entirely Old World (our climate is different). We want wines to reflect our climate, terroir and winemaking ethos. Never underestimate the French, they have been making wine for more years that we have had breakfasts. At the top end of the spectrum, they have defined elegance in terms of wine and marketing too. Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Cognac all have that magic ring to them. The French are also masters of the Blend often producing only a single wine from a vineyard, and simply named as such. Depending on their vineyard planting, this wine can consist of several, the end product reflecting the all and the everything. Equally so, never underestimate us South Africans, and as
A selection of some of the finest.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu said post our successful hosting of the World Cup football: “We South Africans continue to amaze ourselves”. For years we have had some highly respected blends such as Rustenberg, Meerlust, Kanonkop and Thelem. Now there is so much more choice in this growing market of exciting and dynamic wines, and some absolutely world class new blends. Some wonderful things are happening in Darling too. Many will be familiar with the well-established wines like Darling Cellars Kroon, Groote Post Old Man’s Red and White, and Ormonde Theodore Eksteen and Vernon Basson. Recently added to the line-up are the Duckitt wines from Cloof, the really innovative Cellarmaster numbered blends, 7, 8 and 9 from Darling Cellars and just arrived on my desk, a sumptuous Shiraz-Sangiovese from Fairview’s Darling Vineyards. So often we consumers get too bogged down by percentages and detail - from time immemorial wine has been about sharing, savouring and enjoying. There is a rural legend that years ago a group of SA winemakers were visiting cellars in France and one asked one of the leading Chateau owners as to how much wood they gave their wines, and to which the answer was “enough”! So enjoy the day, enjoy the wine in your glass and remember offer an occasional toast to all of those involved - the pruners, the pickers, the winegrower, and above all, Mother Nature, without whom all would be in vain. j FOR MORE INFORMATION: Charles Withington j 074 1941 711 www.darlingwine.co.za

dine Famous Farm Fare
Eightee1894 West Coast Food Heroes
O
n the Southern corner of the Yzerfontein/R27 Crossing you will find a West Coast institution – the famous Weskus Padstal. Most people who have driven the R 27 have stopped at the Weskus Padstal at some point to refresh, and most people come back again. The Farm Stall stays true to what it is, a farm stall. That is exactly what Oom Bennett wanted to create here, and has achieved. Rustic, yet very welcoming, you will find just about anything here, from their own produced preserves to beautifully baked fresh plaas brood. The pies have also become somewhat legendary. The food menu is short and sweet, offering boerekos that you do not usually find on restaurant menus. Sure there are the usual toasted sandwiches, but people drive far and wide to enjoy the affal (tripe) and oxtail. I got there relatively early, and the affal was not yet ready, so I opted for the Eisbein, however, Bodo insisted that I also try the West Coast Fish Pie. So when it all arrived, a feast of food was set in front of me. The Eisbein was certainly not a pretender, and it was exactly what one would expect - LARGE, crispy, and with just the right amount of fat! The fish pie was also lovely. I understand from Dawie that this is an old Yzerfontein recipe that has been handed down from generation to generation, so you are not going to find this pie anywhere else! On weekends there is a buffet breakfast and on Sundays Weskus Padstal pulls out all the stops with the Boere Buffet. Apart from the usual farm stall fare that is on offer, Weskus Padstal also boasts a large collection of exotic parrots. This, along with the play area and man-size chessboard is a great hit with children. Oom Bennet’s family now continues his legacy of maintaining the integrity of what he originally set out to do! So en-route to your festive season destination, make sure that you pop in to Weskus Padstal to refresh, or spend a bit more time and enjoy a meal there. When you visit my blog at www.PreserveThePig.com, you can read more about Weskus Padstal and other West Coast Food Heroes. j

Vakansie Gesondheid deur Dr. Nico Nel
D
Indien onseker, soek eerder mediese advies.
Voedsel

beauty Happy Healthy Holiday Hair by Lizelle McMaster
Y
our hair needs a holiday just like you. This is a good time to treat your mane, after all fine feathers make fine birds. To bring life and shine back to your hair, try a weekly moisture treatment to rejuvenate and nourish your locks beautifully. YOUR HAIR NEEDS IT IN SUMMER! The summer sun, along with chemicals from the pool and salt from the ocean, can play havoc with your hair. The sun can dry out hair, bleach and damage it. Sun protection is one of the most important tips this summer. One quick way to add some protection is to run your hands lightly through your hair after applying sunscreen. Make sure you purchase your shampoo and conditioner from a good salon that has built-in UV protection. It also helps to get your hair wet before entering the water then it won’t absorb so much chlorine or salt. Put your hair up in loose comfortable styles. A messy braid, sexy ponytail, or what about that hat you’ve been dying to show off all winter? This is ideal for keeping your hair under control all day long and minimize exposure to the sun.
Having trendy hair is a necessity. The hottest hair colour trends this summer is ombre, platinum, dip dyes and rose gold reds. Be brave and ask your stylist to create a new look that will turn heads this holiday. This doesn’t only apply to woman but equally to men. Don’t you just love the modern hairstyles our men are showing off these days? She was the most beautiful creature on Earth - her hair said so in that language only hair can speak. kids DARLING COLLEGE A S C H O O L W I T H A D I F F E R E N C E by Marius Jerling
D
arling College, founded in 1998, is a private independent school in the heart of Darling. The school is dual medium and students are taught in both English and Afrikaans in each subject. The classes are small, allowing teachers to give special attention should a child need additional assistance. Darling College is registered with ISASA and the Western Cape Education Department. This year, our school was awarded for being top in the region in Mathematics and in the top 5 in the region for languages. Darling College offers a unique modern and progressive curriculum with a high standard for children from Grade 00 to Grade 7. Our grade 7 students move on to high schools all over the province and excel in these schools. The feedback from schools such as Somerset College, Bishops, Paarl Gymnasium, Boland Landbou and SACS about our students are always outstanding. The school offers a wide range of sports throughout the year. Athletics, mini-cricket, cricket, tennis, bowls and swimming in summer with rugby and netball during winter. Our school is highly respected amongst other schools in the Western Cape Region for its strong coaching abilities. Our coaches have represented Boland in cricket as well as Western Province, Boland and the SA College Team in netball, rugby and athletics. Many of our students have represented Swartland, Western Boland and Boland in both regional and national
tournaments. In 2013 Darling College student J P Groenewald represented Boland at the u/13 Craven Week. Besides the normal extra mural activities our students are also participating in activities such as Gymnastics, Gymkhana and Bowls. Darling College student A J Basson is an Air Gun shot representing Western Province and is ranked 7th in the country in his class. Our school participates in the Regional Eisteddfod every year, and we boast with many outstanding achievements. Our drama department never seems to rest with annual small productions that not only makes use of our own students but also draws in the greater community of Darling. We have a very strong art department and on several occasions have been awarded for its excellence in art by the Wild Flower Society. The school choir has regular local performances and our students have access to professional vocal, guitar and piano coaching. Darling College is a unique school that offers a unique experience for each student. Our beautiful environment and surroundings allow our students to explore and learn with practical experiences and outdoor education opportunities. The most amazing thing about our school is the fact that every student is encouraged to participate in all activities presented by our school, so that they have the confidence to face the outside challenges of life and to become the best they can be. I love my school because I feel loved. j FOR MORE INFORMATION: 022 492 3429 www.darlingcollege.org.za j principal@darlingcollege.org.za

PARK MANNERS I by Kathy Clayton
am probably going to ruffle a few feathers with this article, but I have been prompted to write this, following an upsurge in complaints, not only from my friends, but from people who train with me and walk regularly in parks. Scenario 1: An owner with two dogs is walking in the park. In the distance are several owners walking their dogs in a group. As they get closer, the group of dogs race up to the two dogs and some of the dogs jump on top of the two dogs. The older dog is extremely nervous and immediately rolls on his back with some dogs on top; the younger dog is interested in greeting, wagging his tail, but one large dog jumps and pins him to the ground. The owner is told firmly by the leader of the group to Leave the dogs, they must sort it out amongst themselves. When the owner finally can’t take it any more, she says a firm Uh Uh, and gets her dogs away from the group and quickly moves off. Scenario 2: A group of children are playing and they see a child is walking towards them. As he gets closer the group of children rush up to him push him to the ground, sit on him, push him around. The child is not happy and will either fight off the other children, or lie there crying, or wait for them to go away. The person in charge of the play area tells the adults to Leave them alone, they must sort it out amongst themselves. So, what is the difference between the two scenarios? In my opinion - none! They are both incidents of BULLYING. One is with children and one is with dogs. The only thing that could be different, is that the adults probably wouldn’t listen to the person telling them to leave the children alone. I’m sure that an adult would go and help the child that is being bullied. So, why is it that people have the idea that it is alright to leave dogs to rush up to other dogs, jump on top of them and generally bully? Over the past year or two, people have become more aware that they need to walk and exercise their dogs. This is great, but it has also seen an increase in the number of people walking in public places. A large number of these dogs have never been socialized properly or been to some form of training. This means that when their owner calls them, they don’t listen and generally run around doing their own thing. There are now dog walking groups that meet and walk a number of dogs together. Wonderful for the dogs that now become friends and run and play together, but extremely intimidating for other owners and dogs to see a group of dogs racing towards them, and in 9/10 cases, some of these dogs in the group will jump on top of other dogs, play roughly and make the owner feel uncomfortable about having so many dogs around their dogs. There are also the owners when they see their dogs running towards other dogs that shout Don’t worry, my dog is friendly! or My dog is just a puppy! Well maybe that dog that they are running towards is walking quietly on a lead, because it has issues with other dogs. The owner doesn’t want a dog running up to their dog because that owner says it’s friendly. Of course, in most cases the dog running up cannot be recalled to its owner because it doesn’t listen. And, how many times has the
person walking their dog on a lead and trying to avoid other dogs get shouted at with Then why do you bring your dog to the park? Not fair, they have an equal right to walk in the public place, as everyone else does. There needs to be some park manners for owners and for dogs when walking in public. I believe that dogs should not rush up to other dogs, and especially not in a group. I have a rule in my puppy and training classes: Never allow your puppy/ dog on top of another dog. By teaching your dog that it is not allowed to jump on top of another dog, you will prevent this bullying from occurring. I know that I am not going to change the mindset of most owners and trainers, but I would like to state that I believe that this is bullying, and humans are against bullying in children, so why do we allow it to happen in dogs? It is time for everyone who takes their dogs on walks to be responsible and ensure that their dog behaves towards other dogs that are being walked. j FOR MORE INFORMATION: Kathy Clayton 011 783 3042 j 082 454 1750 kcdogs@global.co.za j www.kcdogschool.co.za Chairman of Dancing with Dogs in Africa Senior Accredited Animal Behaviour Consultant Professional Dog Trainer and owner of K C Dog School BA (UNISA) HDE (Johannesburg College of Education) Qualified KUSA Judge in Obedience, Agility, Dog Jumping, Dog Carting International judge for World Canine Freestyle Organization

Mariehetta Jagman, of Hetta soos haar vriende haar noem, staan haar plek vol by die Wild Flour. Ek was so dankbaar. Nadia het my elke Maandag Langebaan toe geneem waar ek by Fransa van die chef skool in Langebaan klas geloop, eksamen geskryf en my eerste kwalifikasies bekom het. My kosbare sertifikaat hang teen my muur! My droom het waar geword!”

ancer is NOT an old persons disease. Herman is the reason that The Vrede Foundation came into existence. Originally from Cape Town, this Bellville boy is a blood brother of the now infamous Bellville rock scene elite, having played in high school rock bands with Afrikaans rock heavyweights, Francois van Coke and Wynand Myburgh. Herman, having worked on numerous shows including JIP, Meet the Fan, Meltdown, Beatlab and Selekta and having met and befriended many of the top bands in South Africa became the presenter of AMP. In late 2008 just after Oppikoppi, tragedy struck. Herman had been on excessive painkiller use for what he thought was backpain. It was during a routine stomach sonar that the specialist observed what they thought was a growth on Herman’s kidney. A lung x-ray confirmed their worst suspicions. The x-ray showed multiple tumours (lung metastases) on his lungs. On the 3rd of November 2008 the results were in; Herman had Stage 3 Testicular Cancer, with a secondary Lymph Cancer and Tertiary Lung Tumours. It was malignant. Herman was only 28 years old. And he had no medical aid. That day a fight began: A fight against an invisible enemy that was living inside of him. At the same time, The Vrede Foundation was born to simultaneously use Herman’s public image to speak out about cancer among the youth and to raise funds to assist with the cost of his treatments. Herman worked and fought to be a beacon of positive energy. He picked himself up and continued to spread the word
about cancer and how it affects young people. Through his work and everyday life, Herman made an undeniable impact on all who knew him or heard his story - giving information, hope and love to thousands of young people across South Africa. Unfortunately, the extent of the disease along with secondary complications from his last operation, were too much for his system to ultimately defeat. On Auguar 20th 2009, 8 days before his 30th birthday, Herman passed away. The Vrede Foundation continues in his name, determined to carry on with it’s goal to assist Young People with Cancer and to spread information about Cancer. All events and Foundation activities will forever embody the love of life and positive energy that Herman epitomised. If found early enough, and if treated aggressively, Cancer can be beaten. j

he new Darling Mystery Trail offers fun and exercise to the whole family or group. It is a mix between geo caching and treasure hunt and takes visitors through the scenic historic village of Darling. Guests get their personal map at the Darling Museum, decide which path they would like to walk or ride, solve the riddles and find a treasure. The newly established Darling Mystery Trail combines history, fun and wit. The old village of Darling is rich in Victorian architecture and offers wonderful views on gardens and landscapes. Participants will read in mirror writing, search for a message in a bottle, find a hint on a mysterious flower or use a compass. All riddles are family-足friendly and arranged in the secure and relaxed surrounding of this quaint village. Each visitor gets a personal trail-足map for R25 at the Darling Museum. The individual start time is daily from 10am to 1pm. Depending on skill and the chosen path, the trail offers a relaxing 1.5 to 2 hours walk. A ride on the Mountain Bike is even quicker. To make it special for the younger generation some modern geo caching elements are added. Though it is fun to use, it is not necessary to use the GPS, the QR-足code reader and the compass on the smartphone.
When everyone is finished & solved the riddles, participants will get a treasure & stand a chance to win a Darling weekend for two worth R2000. Feesmark deur Nadine le Roux
I

Fossil Park Home of the 5 million year old ‘Big 5’ by Patricia Groenewald
T
he West Coast Fossil Park was started in 1998 as part of the rehabilitation of the open-cast phosphate mine that operated from 1943 until 1993. The fossils were first made known to palaeontologists in 1958 and rescue operations began. Over a million specimens were removed and sent to the South African Museum in Cape Town. They are currently stored in Iziko’s Cenozoic Collection. More than 230 different species of animal have been described so far. Visitors who go on the guided tour are taken to the 80m2 covered dig site where the fossils have been left in situ. The guide also takes visitors behind-the-scenes to the laboratory, where the microfauna fossils and fossilized shark teeth are sorted. Skulls of some of the carnivores found here, such as the African Bear, can be seen in our museum which is open daily. The Sivatherium Coffee Shop is open during the operating hours to provide delicious meals and cakes for those who get hungry while exploring the past. Our curio shop stocks a variety of items, including a number of books related to rocks and fossils, Fossil Park postcards and other memorabilia. Activities such as the mock dig are available for kids to take part in and there is a play park where they can let off some energy. Other energy-releasers available are the 3.5km walking trail and the bicycle routes. We are open every day except New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Christmas Day, so come on down, stop on by and experience the richest concentration of Miocene/Pliocene history in South Africa. j
