FROM YOU
Stadsmuis & Plaasmuis DEUR ELBE BOTHMA
O
Helaas…dit was net 50 treë verder toe is sussie nie
4

bout 5 years ago a group of ladies started a knitting club at the Weskus Farmstall. Every Tuesday around 14:00 they meet to knit, socialize and chill as they like to say. The knitting club consists of about 12 ladies. They will knit to their hearts content to create something for themselves or for a friend or family member. Esmé, the owner of the Weskus Padstal, will order the necessary wool for them, having a wide selection available to purchase at the Weskus Farmstall. They also donate some of their needle work to charity, but mostly they do this for fun. j

ONE DAY IS NOT ENOUGH! WORDS EVITA BEZUIDENHOUT PHOTO STEFAN HURTER Evita Bezuidenhout has been associated with Darling and the community for twenty years. The longest street in the town is the Evita Bezuidenhout Boulevard. The old Darling railway Station, Evita se Perron, is now an international destination for unique entertainment. Tannie Evita was the South African Ambassador in the black homeland Republic of Bapetikosweti between 1981 and 1991 and is well-known for her two cook books Evita’s Kossie Sikelela and Evita’s Bossie Sikelela. Today her full focus is on The Darling Trust, her three grandchildren and making our democracy a safer place for all South Africans. She here shares with us what the past month of August meant for her.
I
t is hard work being called the most famous white woman in South Africa living in Darling. And yet, I can remember being brought up to be grateful for the education I was given, the chances I was allowed to dream about, and to make sure that everything was focused on the great prize: my future husband. I did all that and I’m still here. As I sail into my 80th year, still with a 12-year-old’s heart beating with excitement, I realize that no education could have prepared me for this moment. No hobby or interest could have armed me against this total onslaught of life, and no husband could protect me from a world outside and the turmoil within. So I was irritated by a Women’s Day and a Women’s Month. We don’t have the luxury of enjoying those thirty-one days in August, or that dreaded 9th day of the month, because we are busy working for a future. Yes, we try and show how happy we are, because hopefully some of the world out there will then take notice of our smiles. Yes, we keep trying to remind a watching public that there are issues that we also need the world to act on. Government notices us during August and if their promises could come true, our world would be a happier place. By now we know that most of it is just an attractive shop window filled with products that are sold on our tears and pain. Money is collected to prevent more unhappiness - somewhere. A brave public protector confronting the charge of the Nkandla Brigade fills me with pride. We are grateful, natuurlik! We look forward to the resulting changes in our lives. We also have urgent ideas to contribute. We just hope someone will listen to us now that this month of August is over. Our inspirations are those ‘Extraordinary Women’ who are regarded as leaders and mentors living on the clouds of magic. Fame often leads the way, from Angelina Jolie to Angela Merkel. I am sorry Whitney Houston is dead and her daughter is buried. I look at a magazine and the glowing beauty of a
6
TANNIE EVITA’S ISSUE 2015 j
middle-aged Caitlyn Jenner stares back at me. And yet there is something about her that bothers me, but I can’t put my finger on it. There are more women in our nation than men and in spite of a constitution that protects us, some of us are more frightened than ever before. The trouble is we can’t compete with the symbol of what we are meant to be. Extraordinary is a word often used to describe a successful woman. And yet every day I meet women who change the world around them without fame or fortune. No one photoshops them. No house of fashion gives them gowns. They are seldom reflected on our small screens in soaps or dramas. There is seldom a red carpet for these women to walk along, seldom a spotlight for selfies and snaps, seldom a special day for them to kick off their shoes and just relax because someone else will do the chores. They are the mothers who work all day to put their children through an education while fetching water from a tap at the top of a hill or a river at the bottom of a valley. The gogos and grannies who protect their small offspring against the poverty and violence that threatens life and limb. The daughter who tries to finish school while being mummy and ouma to others who have no one. The working women who scarcely take home enough cash to treat their family to a fresh meal. The retired teacher who spends her days sharing her experience with whoever needs to make sense of an alphabet. The so-called disabled women who use their disabilities to prove that the truly disabled ones are us who have forgotten how to use our abilities to enrich lives and encourage hope. These citizens of the Swartland didn’t have time to celebrate a Woman’s Day. My inspirations in the community of Darling are just some of the millions of ordinary women doing extraordinary things, for whom every day is the first day of the rest of their lives. j

DARLING, darling! WORDS PIETER DIRK UYS PHOTOS SILVERDUNE PHOTOGRAPHY ‘Where do you live?’ ‘Darling.’ ‘Yes darling, but where?’ Difficult to translate into words like small town, Swartland, West Coast. English for Skattie. Where a boulevard is named after a living person who doesn’t exist. You can see it from the hill with the NG Kerk tower pointing like a third finger, hidden by the tall alien trees that date back to colonial times. Like green leafy statues. How long will they last? As long as they are loved and needed, because shade is a rare luxury on those hot days of 40 degree heat. The Evita Bezuidenhout Boulevard used to be called Die Mooreesburg pad. The old disused blik-geboutjie next to the railway used to be known as the Darling Station when trains still ran and stopped and mattered. Now it is Evita se Perron, an international destination for visitors from all over the world including the Transvaal (which also doesn’t exist, but still is regarded as a home for some). My first view of this town was twenty years ago on Freedom Day, the first celebration of the beginning of the rest of our
TANNIE EVITA’S ISSUE 2015 j
lives. I had planned to go and look at another view called MacGregor and ended up in Darling. That’s like going to China and ending up in Brazil! No reason to go there. No family connections. Just familiarity with its name, because in the theatre one tends to call everyone darling. After a few hours there, having bought a derelict house I didn’t need, I got back to civilization and told of my adventure. ‘Darling, you’re mad!’ Then I knew it was okay. Mad is good. It means no one has thought of it. If people agree and nod, you’re standing in a queue. So back to Darling I went, darling, and have been here ever since. And now, looking at the same view from the hill, I can only say: nothing has changed and yet everything is different. There is now freedom to be equal, freedom to be original, freedom to be proud and freedom to be special. Any town that had its roots in a system of separate development and now can embrace the most famous white woman in South Africa (who is not quite what she pretends to be) with warmth and friendship, just underlines the greeting: ‘Welcome to Darling, darling!’ j

he scandals around Nkandla will just not go away. ANC member Evita Bezuidenhout is also under suspicion. To deflect attention to the rumours swirling through the corridors of Luthuli House that Tannie Evita singlehandedly is responsible for spending R246m on curtains for MaKhumalo’s tuck shop, she has been redeployed to Cape Town to keep a motherly eye on the antics of the new kindergarten. Parliament was once all white. Then it became an imbalance of white, black and brown. Now comes die rooi gevaar! The most famous white woman in South Africa and former Ambassador to the Homeland of Bapetikosweti, is here seen stranded in a red sea of expectation with some of the members of the Economic Freedom Fighters. On her lap sits their leader who sixteen months ago couldn’t rub two cabbages together and yet now has introduced his red presence to the National Assembly like a crimson gash of lipstick on an old nun’s crumbling facade. Parliament will never be the same again. Stand-up comedy has arrived! The picture proves that the EFF now also sports members who are not only white and mature, but bring with them political experience from former dangerous liaisons. On the left Dr Piet Promises who once knew how to confiscate land without compensation, sitting next to Comrade Botha who after many years in the NP ended up in a red beret via the ANC ‘because of foreign affairs that need investigating.’ To the right of Evita sits Muslim firebrand Fatima Petersen who will make sure that the handed-out sausage rolls are strictly halaal with EFF tee-shirts not imported from China. Next to her is Oom PW, happily back in Parliament after a lifetime in the political wilderness.
8
TANNIE EVITA’S ISSUE 2015 j
Behind them various other excited new MP’s who cannot wait to give the ANC a two-thirds majority in exchange for the nationalization of banks, mines and McDonalds, as well as regime-change in the Cape and Orania. It is a year since Mrs Bezuidenhout joined the ANC. ‘Give cash and you’re in’, she recently admitted. People still find it hard to believe that the Gogo of the Nation was now a member of the ruling party. ‘Yes,’ said a leading political pundit who wanted to remain nameless, ‘It’s like seeing Chancellor Angela Merkel as a Greek bank manager!’ This ongoing saga will be part of EVITA’S NKANDLAKOSWETI set to open in 2016. In the meantime, our democratically-elected parliament will prove itself as a worthy warm-up act. Little Red Riding Hood can now also be The Wolf!

FROM PIETER DIRK UYS Cash Bar & Food Stalls I’VE LEARNT: That nothing should scare me. That I have a responsibility towards my fellow South Africans -
a responsibility which we should bear with insight, compassion and joy. To plan ahead - nothing happens without being proactive and positive. To never stop creating within my own unique voice. To understand that we have to fail with the same grace as when we achieve success. Nothing beats discipline and hard work. Originality and uniqueness is what defines us. Nothing is too sacred or to serious or precious for good humour - it drives away the fear. He taught me - politicians and leaders work for us, not the other way round. As creative souls - artists, writers, directors, entertainers, story tellers - we should never leave our audiences, readers, viewers without a strong sense of hope. j

PROFILE
Gaan sien een van Tannie se shows by Evita se Perron.
My eerste uitstalling was by die Dorpstraat Galery op Stellenbosch. Ek was 33.
Kontak my: ninavdw53@gmail.com of 072 6251708.
Beplan jy enige nuwe uitstallings?
TANNIE EVITA’S ISSUE 2015 j
‘It’s more perspiration than inspiration.’
Ek reken Cecil B. DeMille se ‘quote’: “Creativity is a drug I cannot live without” geld sekerlik vir jou...mag daar nog dekades van kreatiwiteit voorlê!

MARKET
PET’S DELIGHT Sandy Wilkins When did you start your business and how did it begin? Pammie and I started making the Bird Feeders in March 2009. When we made our first bottle, you should have seen us. One holding the bottle and the other doing the wiring. It took us ages but now Pammie has the wiring taped. A friend kindly gave us a recipe for the Seed Bells which we started making in Feb 2012. Our Bread/Fruit Feeders we started making in Feb 2010 with chicken wire but that was so hard on the hands we decided to change to using Tremnet. Seed Rolls are our latest product and although a bit messy with the peanut butter, just as much fun to make. Describe your product. Everything is made from recycled materials: yy Bird Feeder Bottles yy Seed Bells yy Seed Rolls yy Bread/Fruit Feeder What is your best seller? The Bird Feeder Bottles What are the difficulties being a market trader? On the funny side getting up early in the morning in order to be on time and running out of change. Why do you love participating at markets? Because of Joie de Vivre, we laugh, dance to the music, exchange hugs and chats with friends and familiar faces – a real “big family” feeling! Name 5 tips for new traders: yy Be on time – Ha-Ha! yy Products to be clearly priced. yy Products to be well presented. yy Believe in your products. yy Market your products well. Please share a funny moment you experienced at a market. The times I had to climb under the table to dance to the music.
Shaun se Braai Slaai Morné Jordaan Shaun Van Konyneberg
When did you start your business and how did it begin? In January 2015 at a braai, where everyone commented how good our braai salads tasted! When and where did you trade at your first market? In January 2015 at the Parklands Shopping Centre. Describe your product: The salad in a jar that should accompany any braai meat! We have three varieties at the moment. What is your best seller? All our salads sell really well. Depending on the buyers preference, as we have sweet to hot flavours. What are the difficulties being a market trader? Waking up very early! Why do you love participating at markets? Meeting interesting people – especially the girls! Name 5 tips for new traders: yy Do not wake up with a hangover! yy Competitive pricing. yy Have a sexy man or girl behind the stall. yy Talk to everyone. yy Do not be shy. Please share a special moment you experienced at a market A buyer comparing our chillies to a Mexican brand, but stated it does not taste the same. HOME
ADVICE FOR HOME HUNTERS Before you sign on the dotted line
F
irstly if you need finance in order to purchase a new home it is advisable to talk to a financial institution or to a reputable bond originator before embarking on your search for the perfect home. A pre-approval from a financial institution, confirming that you have sufficient funds and are financially secure and able to complete the purchase, will enable you to look for a home in the appropriate price category from the outset. It will also strengthen your hand when putting in an offer and negotiating the purchasing price. Pre-approval is always considered in a favourable light during the negotiation process. Moreover, it can save a prospective, new homeowner a great deal of time and unnecessary anguish, and that it can be disheartening when looking at homes in too-high a price bracket only to find that you cannot obtain the necessary finance. Here are some important pointers to add to your checklist, before signing on the dotted line. yy Changes in the Neighbourhood that can devalue your property. If you have set your heart on a home and there are large open areas around it, ask questions about the zoning of the property and find out what the land is being earmarked for. yy Additional Costs. Don’t let these become the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Look at hidden costs and keep a keen eye on what you will be paying for rates, taxes and levies. Always do your calculations upfront to ensure that you will be able to afford these additional expenses. Property transfer duties can make quite a dent in your savings so be sure to budget for this additional expense. Also, put some money aside to fund three to four months’ worth of rates and taxes accounts upfront, as this is nowadays a standard practice. yy Building Plans. Ask about approved building plans and check that these match the current dwelling. It is becoming standard procedure for financial institutions to request updated plans in order to safeguard your
WORDS & PHOTO SHEENA NUTTER and their investment. Please note that outside areas such as lapas and gazebos must reflect on the building plans. If you cannot secure up-to-date, approved plans this problem will simply escalate with time, and you will have to resolve this at some time in the future. yy Compliance and Clearing Certificates. Please note that electrical compliance certificates are mandatory. If the home has an electrical fence, a separate certificate will be required for it. Should the home have gas installations, a gas compliance certificate is necessary. All these certificates must be obtained by the seller prior to registration. Ask in advance about clearance certificates for electricity and water, as well as rates and taxes. Avoid going through the entire purchasing process without asking if these can be obtained. yy Defects. Be on the lookout for obvious cracks, damp, termites and ants. Take a close look at the grass and at wooden window frames to ensure that you are not buying someone else’s problem. Be sure to switch the swimming pool motor on and off, and make a point of asking if the swimming pool is leak-free, as these can be costly to repair. Check the pool cleaner to ensure that it too is in good working condition. It is imperative to check garage motors, automatic gates, intercoms, security and irrigation systems. Do not hesitate to ask specific questions about the property and any problems that there may be. There is an obligation on the seller to advise of any known latent defects. These are defects that may not be visible to the buyer through normal inspection of the property. yy The ‘Voetstoots’ Clause, which comes into effect when purchasing a property, means that you purchase a property as
TANNIE EVITA’S ISSUE 2015 j
it stands. It is therefore wise to compile a checklist to go through with your agent and owner. Remember that the onus is on the purchaser to carry out a reasonable inspection. yy Forewarned is Forearmed. Before signing any documentation, find out as much about the property as possible. Ask your estate agent as many questions as possible to ensure that you obtain clarification on issues that may concern you. Once you have decided which property you want to buy, the estate agent will help you complete an Offer to Purchase, a document that contains all the terms and conditions of the sale, the purchase price, the payment terms, the date you will take occupation of the property, and, if applicable, occupational rent. “At Pam Golding Properties we take pride in facilitating our property transactions between the seller and buyer with professionalism, integrity and empathy,” j

FINANCE
TO INSURE OR NOT TO INSURE – THAT IS THE QUESTION! WORDS ANDY BELLAMY
W
ith the ailing economy and increasing costs many South Africans are contemplating the question: Do I cancel my insurance as I cannot afford it? A big mistake people make when saying they do not want or cannot afford insurance is what they are in effect saying is that if their possessions are damaged or lost they have the resources to cover the loss themselves i.e. self-insurance! Realistically the answer to what to insure lies somewhere in the middle or insuring everything and insuring nothing! It is good to periodically assess your insurance needs and risks to make sure you are paying for items you want insured or paying for items where there is not much risk of damage of loss. By Law, each year your broker or insurance company must contact you to renew your insurance contract. Each year you should review your insurance portfolio and consider these questions amongst others: yy Have I been given or bought something of value such that I need to consider insuring it? yy Have I got rid of something of value, previously insured, that does not need to be insured or have the circumstances changed that I no longer need to insure the item? yy Am I supposed to insure something because of a legal agreement I have (e.g. home insurance due to bond conditions or bank financing of your car)? yy Do I own items which run the risk of being stolen or damaged? yy Have the values of my possessions changed? By contacting an insurance broker, whose job is to help you insure you possessions properly, you will be responsibly reviewing your insurance needs and portfolio and making informed decisions. j BELLAMY CONSULTANTS & BROKERS Andy Bellamy j b.c.b@mweb.co.za j 086 111 5284

HISTORY
DARLING MUSEUM HISTORY WORDS & PHOTOS DARLING TOURISM
T
he village of Darling was founded in 1853 when the Darling Village Trust Board successfully purchased a portion of the farm Langfontein (now Ormonde). It is named after the then governor of the Cape Colony, Lord Charles Henry Darling. It rapidly became known for its spectacular wildflowers, game, salt and butter. In 1899, two Swedes, Nils Moller and G. Threnstrom started their own creamery in Darling. By 1906, the business had expanded so rapidly, that the Swedes relinquished control to a group of local farmers who formed a corporation. A bigger factory was built in 1914 which served the creamery until it was relocated to Paarden Eiland in 1950. The Darling Museum evolved from this industry and was founded in 1978 by the Women’s Agricultural Association with the intention of preserving the history of the butter making industry in Darling. The Museum’s first premises were the original creamery in Main Street. The idea of a museum soon snowballed. Enthusiastic and community minded residents of Darling willingly donated memorabilia and artifacts with a view to preserving the history of Darling. Thanks to the foresight of the municipality, the rapidly expanding museum was then moved into the old Town Hall, built in 1899. The setting echoes with memories of the Saturday night bioscope when Tarzan and Popeye films were screened to the locals; the many wedding receptions with guests resplendent in long dresses and large hats, and school concerts where many a small performer on the wooden boards is now a grandparent.

The Darling Museum vividly showcases life in historical Darling with fascinating displays of Victorian clothing and artifacts. Visitors can peacefully browse lovingly arranged exhibits of clothing, furniture and utensils of a bygone era. An old classroom is complete in every respect with small wooden desks, inkwells, nib pens and exercise books. A kitchen with an old Dover stove displays quaint kitchen tools that were used in a non electric kitchen. The butter museum covers an entire section detailing the beginnings of butter making. An interesting display of household butter churns shows how housewives and farm women made their own butter. There are many different types of large old wooden churns and unique wooden butter washing machines amongst the fascinating array of implements. Outside there is a large Agricultural barn with old farm equipment and tools, wagons and carts used in the area plus a large combine harvester and steam engine. A replica farm office, stable and work shed with vintage tools are set up here too. A reference/research room contains books and historical info and includes a fascinating Day Book written in beautiful copperplate by G.R.Ruperti detailing the daily activities on his farm Klawervlei in 1890. There is also a magnificently detailed sketch drawn by W. Duckitt and his father for the Duke of Bedford in 1805, of farm machinery they had invented, with drawings of a Coulter Plough, Harrows and a Sowing box for barley wheat, peas or beans amongst others.
TANNIE EVITA’S ISSUE 2015 j
The Museum is funded by a monthly donation from the Swartland Municipality, items sold on consignment at the Museum shop and regular talks and functions. For example, a selection of talks/slideshows on historic subjects regularly held during winter and an annual Crafters Day held in May, ageold crafts such as quilting, spinning & weaving, butter making, traditional archery, calligraphy, woodturning, beading and many more are demonstrated to visitors. The Museum encourages visitors to become “Friends of the Museum” which entitles them to discount entrance to events. There is also a quarterly electronic Museum newsletter to keep members abreast of Museum news. The Darling Museum is open 7 days a week thanks to the selfless efforts of volunteers. The local tourism information office is situated in the museum and the tourism officer or museum volunteers will be delighted to help with your queries. j

ost sanctions and when South African wines burst back onto the world stage, two of the most prolifically planted varietals were Chenin Blanc and Cinsaut. At that time many thought these wines were outdated and hectares of vineyard were uprooted to be re-planted with the supposedly trendier grape varieties. Twenty five years on they are coming back and we now begin to value the hidden gems we took for trinkets. Chenin seems to have got a head start, but watch out for Cinsaut coming up on the blind side, and especially from the Swartland and now, Darling, regions. Neil Ellis, one of the pioneers of Darling grapes has just released his Darling Groenkloof Cinsaut Noir 2012. Very limited, pricey (as it deserves to be) and sold only directly from the vineyard, and the Darling Wine Shop! Bursting on the scene, and in time for the big Cape Wine exhibition in midSeptember, is Darling Cellars’ new offering of Cinful Darling Cinsaut. With a strikingly different packaging, this well priced and hugely drinkable wine, will garner many followers. In the old days Cinsaut used to be called Hermitage (now disallowed by the French, being an area in France, in the same
Dear Evita, You are like fine vintage wine, which just keeps getting better. And as with fine wine, you add much to our lives – not just fun and laughter, but also introspection into the crazy world in which we live. We raise OUR glasses to you – a Toast TO Darling from the Taste OF Darling! way as Champagne is). The colloquial term used by all the pickers was Hermityk. And there would be shouts of joy when ‘ons gaan nou Hermityk pluk’. Not only was it a full fleshy grape and delicious to eat, but if you were being paid by stukwerk it is the grape that fills the baskets fastest and your biggest earner. The people’s grape. This is a big year for Darling’s own Evita Bezuidenhout as she celebrates her 80th birthday. What interesting wines she must have enjoyed over time, especially the KWV stuff which was provided in abundance, MP’s being given 24 bottles per month whilst the embassies had it on tap. But it gets better – with 31 different varieties planted in our vineyards, Darling provides a great choice for her and with a wine-list tailored for every guest, she can serve, amongst others: yy MALBEC – when dining with young Julius. yy A BLEND with Trevor Noah. yy CHENIN with Charlize. yy BLANC DE BLANC with Pieter Mulder. yy And last HANE-POOT à la Nkandla chicken coop with JZ. j

KOSSIE SIKELELA j EVITA SE PERRON A TOUCH OF SOPHISTICATION ON THE WEST COAST
W
hilst I always knew that there is a theatre at Evita se Perron, where Tannie Evita performs her various shows regularly (please check out www.evita.co.za for scheduling), I was not aware that there was a restaurant that was open every day for breakfast and lunch. And so I headed off to the Perron. Unfortunately I did not get to speak to Tannie herself as she was travelling overseas, but I was very fortunate enough to be given the tour of the theatre & restaurant by Tasha St John-Reid and Antoinette van Heerden. My impression: WHAT AN AMAZING SPACE! The theatre is what I can call Boere Chic. It is furnished and decorated with amazing Afrikana and relics from the bygone Apartheid and the new democratic eras. It is completely unique, to say the least. In this space Tannie Evita performs her very clever and current satirical shows, and I am told that many other artists grab the chance to perform on this stage because they can then claim that they ‘performed on Tannie Evita’s stage’. Ok, so to the food. The restaurant was really started in order to offer theatre-goers food when they attend the shows, but it has subsequently become a permanent feature. The kitchen is staffed by local people because Tannie Evita is particularly passionate about supporting the local communities. The restaurant is open for both breakfast and lunch and the menu is unpretentious. Much of what you get comes directly out of Tannie Evita’s cook book Kossie Sikelela, which has also become a best seller book in South Africa. The kitchen staff prepared a tasting platter, where I got to taste the Reconciliation Bobotie, Pik se Boerewors Roll, the Fish and Chips and the ever famous Poggenpoel Koeksuster. The bobotie was delicious and whilst a boerie roll is just a boerie roll I must say I did enjoy Pik’s boerie very much! And a good koeksuster is always a winner in my books. I am also told by many that the Mphumalanga Scones are incredible. As far as pricing is concerned, it is extremely good value for money. The fare is prepared with a lot of heart and flavour. Coupled with the setting, you are in for a fabulous experience. The theatre is also available for events, and I thought to TANNIE EVITA’S ISSUE 2015 j
myself that it is just such a brilliant place to host something. It comfortably fits 100 – 120 people, perfect for a birthday party or a wedding. One thing is for sure; the guests will have a lot to talk about! I would like to say thanks to Tasha, Antoinette and the rest of the team who made me feel extremely welcome. And to Tannie Evita, whilst I did not get to meet you, you are a true West Coast Food Hero in my books – and I wish you a very Happy 80th Birthday! j

EXERCISE YOUR BODY WAKE UP YOUR MIND
WORDS Claire Waumsley, Physiotherapist Yzerfontein

o I always have to walk down the street one foot in front of the other? What if I walked sideways, skipped a little, zig zagged? Perhaps I would smile to myself, laugh, lighten up. Remember how as a child you ran barefoot over the grass, hopping into a cartwheel and then spinning until you fell, dizzied, to the ground? Your body was learning to coordinate its movement, to balance. Your muscles and joints were growing strong and supple. Your brain was forming millions of new connections as it learnt new complex movements. Studies reveal that the areas of the brain that co-ordinate our physical activity also co-ordinate the movement of thought, the sequencing of thought. This is why when we start moving, go for a walk, a jog, a long swim, we may suddenly come up with the solution to a problem we have been stuck with. The physical movement has activated the thinking part of the brain. Movement has become thoughtful. Stagnation is a problem for today’s society, both young and old. Many of our waking hours spent gazing at the television or computer screen. Inactivity hastens up not only the decline of our physical body but also the decline of our mental abilities. Both body and mind love variety and challenges. Get off road with your feet. Walk Yzerfontein’s Schaapen Island footpath, explore the old jeep tracks, take the meditative spiral path of the labyrinth or join the ladies at 7am taking a dip into the chilly Atlantic Ocean.

Pieter, baie geluk met jou verjaarsdag. Dit is ‘n mylpaal. Gaan voort met jou wonderlike werk in Darling. You rock! van Ella.
Staaltjie?

Beskou jy Tannie Evita as jou muse? The Darling Trust Early Childhood Development Programme - Evita’s Darlings Grade R classes. WORDS TASHA ST JOHN-REID
O
n the 8th of March 2010 our Early Childhood Development programme opened its doors to a very needed crèche with 40 children. In 2011 our brand new Grade R class opened its doors to a further 26 eager learners. The Education Centre continues to grow and evolve - made possible by generous contributions from individuals, various organisations and subsidy from the Western Cape Department of Education. Evita’s Darlings are now up from 40 to 64 learners in two Grade R classes at our Early Childhood Development Centre with a waiting list for next year! The classes comply with all Government requirements and are registered with the Western Cape Department of Education. On behalf of The Darling Trust Trustees, patron and parents a special thank you to Noeline and Nicky Azure (Grade R practitioner) who have in the time they have been with Evita’s Darlings proved to be outstanding teachers. Their dedication is an inspiration to the learners and parents. At the start of every new year, the students which Evita’s Darlings register, arrive with very limited motor, reading and understanding skills - this is every year’s challenge and Noeline, Nicky and Tessa embrace the challenge by turning these students into ‘school ready learners’ for Grade 1 and big school.
Evita’s Darlings are privileged to have these teachers - Grade R is the learners’ first steps to ‘big school’, their care has been exceptional. Apart from teaching, Noeline and Nicky are involved in the learners’ lives as care givers – concerned when they don’t arrive for class they carefully investigate and do home visits to determine the reasons for any absenteeism. j CONTACT US:

Q: My parrot ONLY wants to eat sunflower seeds. I’ve tried everything else, but he just refuses. I’ve given up trying. A: Some parrots have strong individual preferences for foods based on experience and habit. Colour, texture, fat content, shape, size and taste are all factors that play a role in the selection of food. Unfortunately humans unintentionally encourage selective eating habits by providing their birds only with the food that they readily eat. Some birds become fixated on sunflower seeds and will refuse to eat anything else. This leads to severe nutrient deficiencies if the poor eating habits are left unchecked. Please do not give up. Seed junkies may not perceive pellets as a food item and therefore patience and the correct technique is necessary to convert their diets. Get professional help to change the bird’s diet in a safe way. j

short drive along the West Coast road, under an hour’s drive from Cape Town, lies the charming West Coast village of Darling. In the centre of the village and within walking distance of many attractions you will find Jacaranda House, a premier Bed and Breakfast establishment offering first class accommodation, friendly atmosphere, relaxing surroundings and delicious, international cuisine. Here you will be made most welcome by hosts Jane and David who have lived all over the world but chose to settle in this beautifully restored old Victorian lady in Darling. Sit out by the pool, braai on the courtyard, eat outside under the stars, set your taste buds tingling by ordering up one of Jane’s tantalising, home cooked dishes; and just relax. At breakfast, sample Jane’s home grown, homemade marmalade and jams with freshly baked bread and croissants along with your choice of smoked salmon or English breakfast. Later, explore the village, visit nearby wineries to try out top class, locally produced wines and olives, take in a Tannie Evita show at the Perron theatre, play a round or two of golf, visit the town museum or just chill out. Our guests are welcome to use the swimming pool, the covered rear stoep and the rear courtyard and patio area where you can braai if you wish, or just relax. And for those who require it, we have an extensive library of paperback fiction which you are welcome to borrow during your stay with us. Darling is surrounded by wine estates and has a good 9 hole golf course. Arranging a game of golf or a visit to a winery will be our pleasure and should you wish to bring the odd bottle back with you we will be pleased to loan you the glassware to sample it. At the end of your visit we will have made some more new friendships and you will depart, thoroughly refreshed and ready to take on the world once more! j

DARLING WILDFLOWER SHOW CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF CONSERVATION
DARLING WILDFLOWER SHOW 18 – 20 September 2015 Flower Hall open from 9:00 – 17:00
WORDS CON MEYER
T
he Darling Wildflower Show takes place 18 - 20 September at the Darling Club. It celebrates an integral part of the Cape Fynbos Kingdom comprising of Renosterveld, Rietveld, Sandveld, and Strandveld where more than 1200 different species of flowers can be found. We will be celebrating our 98th show this year. The entrance fee includes entry to the landscaped hall, a free ride on a tractor drawn wagon to see the pristine Oude Post wetland, a gourmet food & craft market organised by I Love Yzer, veteran tractor/car display, an entertainment tent featuring live music with the band Klassik who have just returned from the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees, a large childrens play area, safe parking, free entrance to the cat show and many other attractions. There will also be a wine tasting route of the local cellars comprising Cloof, Darling Cellars, Earthbound, Groote Post and Ormonde.
THE DARLING WILD FLOWER SOCIETY Darling is known as the flower of the West Coast and the abundance of flora and natural flowers is undoubtedly its biggest asset. The DWFS has held a show virtually every year since that 1st show in 1917. The ideals expressed by the founders still hold true today. They wanted to display Darling’s God-given wealth for the world to see. At the same time they promoted the conservation of flowers amongst the farmers of the district, who have since maintained the botanical diversity of the region over several generations. The West Coast flower region, an integral part of the Cape Fynbos Kingdom, boasts more than 1200 species of flowering plants. About 80 of these are endemic to the West Coast and known nowhere else. The rich flora of the West Coast occurs on mainly 3 different soil types, culminating in 3 distinctive vegetation types, namely, Strandveld, Renosterveld and Sandveld. Darling lies within the Cape West Coast Biosphere reserve in the centre of the threatened lowland sandplain and renosterveld fynbos. Darling’s veld is unique in that it consists of an intermingling of various veld types. It is not unusual to find a single patch which can be classified as Sandveld, Strandveld, Renosterveld and Rietveld. This mix-up has led to the veld in Darling producing flowers, especially Geophytes (bulbous plants), which are spectacular in their diversity, size and colour. This situation is found nowhere else in the world. The Cape Floral Kingdom, with more than 12 000 species, is also the richest in species diversity. It is astounding that Darling contains more than 10% of the species count of the Cape Floral Kingdom in less than 1% of the area. If there was ever a Golden Mile of the plant kingdom anywhere in the world, it must surely exist in Darling. If there was ever a most threatened area in the world, likewise. Rapidly expanding development along the West Coast will swallow large tracts of the internationally unique flora.
