This winter theme and colour palette certainly takes it’s cue from the announcement of Pantones colour of the year for 2015: Marsala. We believe this one to be a beautiful continuation of our hues from summer, complimenting the focus colour of coral in our “Summer Breeze” theme. We complimented this warm spicy colour with tones of grey, purples and berries. Spice things up this winter and come visit us at Haus of Decor.

In 1999 het sy oor my pad gestap by Bellville treinstasie. We would like to welcome Sylvia Neumeister to I Love Yzer. The bubbly blonde is a great addition to our team and we are looking forward working with her in the a crazy season ahead. TOP ALLOCADES FOR ORMONDE WINES

T

he result for the Top 100 SA Wines Challenge was announced in April and ORMONDE performed well with 4 wines being selected for this prestigious group. The Top 100 SA Wine challenge is a major fine wine event in the country. These 100 wines were selected from a record 500 entries comprising the best wines from more than 600 cellars and 10 000 wines available to consumers. The Ormonde Wines which have

been awarded are: Ormonde Barrel Selected Shiraz 2013, our Single Vineyard Chip of the Old Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 and our aged white wines being Ondine Chenin Blanc 2013 and Ondine Semillon 2013. Theo Basson, owner of Ormonde Wines, was notably pleased saying: We are proud of the hard work and dedication of our team in creating these quality products. We strive for consistency in quality, vintage after vintage. To achieve this takes a serious amount of hard work, experience and passion. A feather in the cap for the Ormonde appellation. Ormonde extends an invitation to all wine lovers to visit Ormonde in Darling and taste these great wines. j

CONTRIBUTORS Annette Richards I moved from Natal to the Cape in 1987 with my family. We all had a proud sports background in tennis, archery and tenpin bowling. I am proud to say that I was the first person of colour to achieve Springbok colours in tenpin bowling and in 1988 I became the South African Ladies Champ. In 2013 I retired from the corporate world after spending most of my working life with Corobrik. I decided to pursue my passion for cooking. So here I am enjoying what I love doing and the pleasure it gives others. I carefully choose the food markets I participate in, as I do not intend stressing myself out with too much on my plate. After all, I am retired! Dr Dalize Willemse is a GP with a special interest in Aesthetic, Anti-Ageing & Cosmetic Medicine. She is based in Cape Town and rotates between two of Skin Renewal’s Cape Town branches in Willowbridge and Stellenbosch. She studied a BSc Psychology at Free State University and graduated in 1992. Five years later, she qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Stellenbosch. In 2007 she developed an interest in aesthetics and started doing courses and attending aesthetic congresses and in 2009 she opened up her own aesthetics practice in Malmesbury and started working for Skin Renewal. She is a member of The Aesthetic and Anti-aging Medicine Society of South Africa.

Op Utrecht my skoolloopbaan voltooi en daarna in Bloemfontein my onderwys diploma gaan verwerf waar ek in my 4de jaar Pre-Primêr gespes het. Daar het ek my man ontmoet en einde 1984 in Darling kom woon. In 1986 het ek op Grootberg skool gehou. Daarna is 2 pragtige kinders is gebore.

How the West Coast set me up for a great career.

S

ome of you might or might not know me. I’ve graced your screens for a number of years now, currently starring in one of Etv’s daytime shows, SCANDAL! as Shakira. I have had a career predominantly in television, even though I obtained a degree in theatre art at the University of Stellenbosch in 1997. It was soon after I finished my studies that I landed a role in a tv series that would mark the beginning of my love for the West Coast. That series was SOUTMANSLAND, shot in St. Helena Bay in 1998. How I still long for that time. It was magical. Starring alongside some of South Africa’s best actors, nervous and fresh out of school I was immediately put at ease by the friendly professionalism and warm attitude by all involved with the project. And when I say all, I mostly mean St. Helena Bay and

6

its people. Every shooting day was met with sunshine, the ocean being the calming soundtrack. And even though we were shooting a tv series it pretty much felt like a play with people from the community not just serving as extras but also being our ever present audience. Not only was the production embraced by the community but we were part of them. It certainly made it easier for me to portray my character because I didn’t have to imagine what she was like...my character was all around me. It was a special time. Kyknet was a good stepping stone for my career. I enjoyed presenting but I realized it was not my passion. I don’t have the personality for it. Being part of Song vir Katryn certainly helped cement my career and my name in the industry. For that I’m forever grateful!

I LOVE YZER DARLING

Egoli certainly prepared me for how tough the industry can be and to grow a thick skin. From 2000 - 2001 I was the character, Paige. I enjoyed it and certainly learned a lot! But of course prior to all this I had my humble beginnings in the small Karoo town of Oudtshoorn. Born to a teen mom and raised by her and my grandparents, my childhood feels like a lifetime ago. My mom and grandparents passed on when I was still at varsity and I still make regular visits to die Hoorn whenever I can. My childhood was magical. Carefree. I grew up in a time when kids had to play outside and your mom would eventually call you from the stoep to come inside. When family suppers were a bredie of some kind, eaten around the kitchen table with every family member in attendance. The dining room table was only for Sunday lunch and doing your homework. I’m from a family of teachers who believed an education is your ticket to a better life. And thank goodness for that. They certainly have given me a life beyond expectations. That life today also consists of a husband and child. I met my husband, Charlie, in 2005 while working on another drama series in Cape Town. Yes the Cape made my life! We soon started dating and tied the knot in New York in 2008. We built a lovely home together in Johannesburg with the intention of starting a family. That wish came true in March 2012 with the birth of our daughter Jesse. Those of you who have kids know what a blessing a child is. Charlie and I are totally smitten with her and I’m just trying to make sure that I spend as much time with her as possible, because people always say that it goes by so quickly. And before we know it she’ll be all grown up and out of the house. Because time goes so quickly I have actually decided to take some time off work to spend with Jesse and our family. Charlie is an American and we have decided to go live there for a while. I am looking forward to this adventure and I’ll be blogging about this experience, where and when I can. Follow me on Social Media so I can make you part of my journey. j

Where has the Snoek gone? WORDS WALLY CROOME

S

ince the end of June last year Capetonians have been asking the question – where has the snoek gone? Snoek is predominantly caught in the Western Cape and to most of the Western Cape Line fishermen, constitutes up to 95% of our total catch. Up till approximately 10 years ago statistics indicate that as much as 60% of the national snoek catch was landed in Yzerfontein. This figure has dropped to as low as 4% over the past 5 years. Many of our older residents will remember the chaos in our town with up to 120 snoek boats and between 700-900 crew members descending on Yzerfontein in the early hours of the morning to use the harbour. The lack of facilities and any form of control exacerbated the problems at that stage. Snoek is a highly migratory fish found from Port Nolloth in the North to Gansbaai in the South with the snoek boats and fishermen migrating with the snoek shoals anywhere between Lamberts Bay and Gansbaai. Historical records indicate that up until approximately 10 years ago the West Coast summer snoek run started in Yzerfontein around Dassen Island about mid October each year and lasted until the end of February/March. Over the past 10 years however, the Yzerfontein snoek run has all but fizzeled out with the summer snoek moving initially to Hout Bay, and until recently the Cape Point area. Our winter snoek traditionally caught nearshore beween Yzerfontein and Saldanha Bay has also not materialized for the past 4-5 years. The scientific fraternity has indicated that the Southern and Eastward migration of the country’s sardine shoals (a major source of food for snoek) has in all probability caused the change in the established patterns.

Many fishermen are blaming global warming, Seismic surveys being conducted on our West Coast by the petroleum industry and the trawling of snoek (under the guise of by-catch) for our current woes. History has however taught us that in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s (way before the advent of any of the above) the fishing industry was in dire straits as snoek had disappeared! This phenomenon has repeated itself on a number of occasions since then. The reason for the current shortage and the high price of snoek is that the last snoek run of any note in the Western Cape occurred in June last year at St Helena Bay. Just prior to Easter there were sporadic catches of snoek in False Bay (up to 50 on a boat) which sold off the boats for an average of R140 with an all time high of R180 on one specific day and the public having to pay up to R240 from the middle men! Boat owners and their crew members are struggling to make ends meet and to assist them to cope with the associated hardship our Association arranged prayer meetings at various harbours. The Yzerfontein prayer meeting was once again well supported by our residents. At the time of writing this article the first winter snoek has shown up at St Helena Bay which will hopefully revive our sector and allow the public to light their braai fires and enjoy their traditional snoekbraai’s again. j Wally Croome is a commercial line fisherman and has lived in Yzerfontein since 1988. He is currently chairman on the West Coast & Peninsula Commercial Ski Boat Association and the South African Commercial Line Fish Association (SACLA). He also held the position of Vice Chairman of the South African Marine Line Fish Management Association (SAMLMA)

PROFILE

Skakel in by die gemeenskap, want hier raak vriende jou familie. Beach braai’s was elke naweek ‘n in-ding.

MARKET

Darling Pomegranates Antoinette Versfeld

Sonneblom

When did you start your business and how did it begin? Eight years ago my husband planted our first pomegranates. I was vaguely interested but only got involved in 2011 out of desperation. After four years of no harvest the pomegranates started to crack and burst. I tried to do something with the damaged pomegranates and ended up making juice. I researched why we did not have any success and I was totally fascinated by the fruit and the symbolism of ancient times. When and where did you trade at your first market? I cannot remember the first market, but I think it was Langebaan. The market was run by PLAY (Parents Lobbying for Active Youth). Describe your product. We are the only producer to have two different juices. Favour is made only with the seeds of the fruit and Blessing is made with the whole fruit and pressed in a machine that is made by Juran in Israel. Our product range includes the following: jj The first pomegranate nougat in South Africa. jj The only natural pomegranate Turkish Delight which is made from our juice and does not contain gelatine. jj Dried pomegranate seeds covered in organic milk and organic cocao. What is your best seller? Apart from the juice definitely the dried seeds. I currently supply Col’Cacchio with these seeds and I am proud to be able to work with them. What are the difficulties being a market trader? Markets are extremely hard work. Challenges are overloaded vehicles, setting up the gazebo and carrying the heavy cooler boxes. At times the weather is my biggest opponent because I sell frozen juice. The only way to sell pure pomegranate juice! Why do you love participating at markets? I love markets because I love people. In order to attend a market traders have to be innovative. Name 5 tips for new traders: jj Attractive stall. jj Enthusiasm about your product. jj I NEVER sit behind my table. jj Neatness. jj Never eat or talk on a mobile when you have clients. j

Gesondheids Beskuit Estelle le Roux When did you start your business and how did it begin? I started baking these rusks about 10 years ago for my children and family after a very good friend gave me a recipe that I changed to suit my own and my children’s taste. In no time colleagues and friends were ordering my rusks after tasting it! When and where did you trade at your first market? My first market was in May 2014 at Vygevallei Farm Stall. I had a fantastic market day and the owner also asked me to deliver my rusks to them the same day! Describe your product: A quality wholesome product and can be eaten dry as a snack. What is your best seller? The rusks and my new range Sonneblom Beskuit Peusel Happies. The off-cuts and crumbs I also sell and the children and clients just love it! The crumbs are used as a muesli with yogurt or milk. Delicious! What are the difficulties being a market trader? For me it is to be able to have enough stock, as I have a full time job and I bake at night and over weekends. The power outages also play a big role in the baking process in order to deliver enough stock for the markets & retailers. You have to plan carefully and ensure that all your marketing strategies are in place and that you can deliver and make a profit. Why do you love participating at markets? I love chatting and meeting different people and explore what interesting items the other traders are selling. Normally I never leave any of the markets without having bought quite a few items! I love shopping… Name 5 tips for new traders: jj The product must be of high quality and at the right price. jj Find innovative ways to sell your product. jj Don’t get despondent. Every market is different. One day you will have excellent sales but the next one might not. jj Have confidence in yourself and your product. jj Make sure that you have all the equipment and marketing material needed for the market. j

D

ie naam Blikaspaai kom oorspronklik van my kinderdae.

YZERFONTEIN TEKS HENNIE RICHTER Namens Yzerfontein Bewarea

O

HISTORY

YZERFONTEIN Boat Angling Club WORDS & PHOTOS EDUARDO PEREIRA

T

he Yzerfontein Boat Club has a long and interesting history. The club was initially formed by local line fishermen who stayed in Yzerfontein, in order to gain launching preference to the then very busy boat launching slipway, which at the time was also controlled by an entry boom. Boats from all over the Cape were often queued up for hours when the snoek was running. This frustration led to the formation of the boat club which later also gained the overall control of the harbour facility and in turn benefited from the launching fee income received. This financial income, as well as the committed efforts of several other individuals in town at the time, gave rise to the building of a clubhouse facility which became their base. Over time, the harbour facility became managed by the Swartland Municipality and the need for commercial line fishermen to gain preference to launching changed, due to the evolved infrastructural changes in town. Nowadays the boat club members are recreational sport anglers and the Club forms part of the Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association, who in turn are affiliated to the South African Deep Sea Angling Association (Internationally by the International Game Fishing Association - IGFA). The boat club also hosts several annual events, the most prestigious being our annual Yzerfontein Snoek Classic, which has over the past 10 years grown to become the biggest recreational sport angling event in the Western Cape. Apart from hosting fishing events, the club remains actively involved in Snoek being weighed in during an event. development, environmental and other issues. Recently the club has been representing pressing issues relating to the recent closure of Area 7 for West-Coast rock lobster at government meetings. The club has played an important role in representing recreational anglers’ rights which has a significant impact on local tourism. The club presently has a steering committee of 8 members and those persons wanting to apply for membership can log onto our website on www.yzerboatclub.co.za or contact our membership officer, Mr Iain van der Spuy. j

FINANCE

TO FILE OR NOT TO FILE.... WORDS NATASHA PIETERSE

T

he most common question we get asked is Do I need to submit an income tax return? The 2015 tax season opens on 1 July 2015 for the period 01 March 2014 to 28 February 2015. The good news is if you earn under R250 000 for a full year from one employer and have no other sources of additional income (for example, interest or rental income) and no deductions that you want to claim (for example medical expenses, travel or retirement annuities), then you don’t need to submit a return. Although salaried employees are limited, by tax law, as to what they can deduct from their income, there are a few things that can be claimed. The allowable tax deductions are: jj Medical Aid contributions. jj Income protection contributions where you take out a policy with a service provider in the case you are no longer able to work anymore. jj Retirement Annuity and Pension Fund contributions which save towards the day you retire. jj Donations paid to registered Public Benefit Organisations for example a charity. jj If you mainly work from home and mostly earn commission then costs relating to the office in your home. Points to remember: jj If you have a travel allowance a logbook is mandatory. jj Retain proof of all your medical expenses during a tax year. jj Ensure that you have all your tax certificates.

COOK

Birth of a Snoek Samoosa WORDS ANNETTE RICHARDS

A

fter making a variety of different flavours of samoosas I realized that I needed to include a fishy type of samoosa to my repertoire and what better than a smoked snoek one at that. Why smoked snoek? One of the dishes I had been making for a number of years was Smoorsnoek which my family always enjoyed and all I had to do was to adapt it slightly to fill a samoosa.

SNOEK & FETA SAMOOSAS Ingredients jj 1 kg Smoked Snoek jj 6 Medium size potatoes jj 1/2 Medium size onion jj 200g Diced tomatoes jj 400g Tub feta cheese

jj jj jj jj

2 tsp Cayenne pepper 2 Cloves garlic Salt and pepper to taste Lemon juice

Method jj De-bone and flake the snoek and refridgerate. jj Boil the potatoes and when done, mash it. jj Fry the chopped onion in a little oil adding the chopped garlic and cayenne pepper. jj After 2 minutes add the diced tomatoes with salt and pepper and let it cook until tomatoes are done. jj Add the flaked snoek and a few drops of lemon juice to cook for approximatley 5 mins, then add the mashed potato and mix well. jj Remove from the stove and add the chopped feta cheese. jj When cooled down start filling the samoosa leaves. j

THE ABC OF FINE SNOEK & GREAT WINE

J

WORDS CHARLES WITHINGTON www.darlingwine.co.za 074 194 1711

ust as Karoo Lamb is the best in terms of South African lamb, so has West Coast snoek become known as the best in snoek. Weskus Snoek is the standard chant of any snoek vendor wanting to attract his customers. Or more colloquially put, Weskus Snoek is Beskus Snoek! The reason is simple. The icy cold Atlantic waters are responsible for breeding fish with a firmer flesh and richer in flavour. It is this Atlantic ocean that provides the correlation between great snoek and fine wines; it is the chilly Atlantic breeze together with the morning sea mist, that also makes our wines great. Let’s not kid ourselves that Darling is cool climate for wines as a hot day in summer is very hot! Not bad news though – it is sunshine and warmth that are so essential for good grape ripening. However, our trump card is this ABC Factor the Atlantic Breeze and Chill that provides the magic needed for great grapes In some ways vines are like people – they can cope with a really warm day but they need that overnight cool to rejuvenate themselves for the next day. With vines having their ambient temperature drop 15-20 degrees overnight cools the growth process, extends the ripening times and allows for those wonderful full, yet delicate, flavours in our wines.

Harvesting in the mist at Ormonde Vineyards.

Which wines to go with snoek? A fighting fish with a full flavour needs a wine with character and difference. I would recommend the following: jj Groote Post Kapokberg Chardonnay 2014 A sumptuous wine with a creamy smoothness. jj Darling Cellars Lime Kilns 2013 This wine remains one of the best in the west (coast) in terms of character and complexity. jj Tullie-Versfeld ‘TV’ Semillon 2012 David Tullie grows fine Semillon and Nicky Versfeld makes it great. Very delicious and very limited. jj Roan Ranger 2013 A Rhone style blend of 65% Cinsaut and the rest being Grenache and Mouvedre. A lovely soft red wine perfect for snoek. Serve slightly chilled and watch your glass seemingly empty itself. jj Secateurs Chenin Blanc Not Darling but dear to me! A great Chenin from Adi Badenhorst’s Kalmoesfontein vineyard. Chenin and Snoek found only on the West Coast or in Paradise. j

BEULAH FARM DELI

A TOUCH OF SOPHISTICATION ON THE WEST COAST WORDS GIL FERREIRA PHOTOS NADINE LE ROUX www.idigdapig.com 083 296 4954 TWITTER @whodapig

A

s you travel north on the R27 from Cape Town and are nearing the Yzerfontein/Darling crossing, you will come across Beulah Farm Deli about 500m from the crossing. Not a regular farm stall, Beulah is very tastefully laid out, almost in a French Provençal style, making it a welcome change from the archetype farm stall. On the shelves you will find a selection of quality products ranging from organic beef and venison biltong and boerewors, right through to GMO free bread and cake flour, a selection of hand made cookies and sweets and a selection of antique crockery and cutlery. Beulah also serves fantastic breakfasts, cakes and light lunches from carefully selected local produce to give the visitor the very best quality food and arguably the best coffee on the R27. The most popular breakfast is the Root 27 which includes hand crafted bacon and pork sausages with your choice of home made baked beans or locally procured Darling Mushrooms, as well as eggs, tomato and farm toast. Another specialty is the hand cured and smoked salmon on croissant with creamy scrambled eggs. The light meals and lunch menu includes the regular fare that you may expect from a farm stall, however, everything is made in the Beulah kitchen. This includes the famous Beulah Pies, where they have had a customer drive all the way from Gordons Bay to come and enjoy them! Pies include Roast Chicken, Venison, Pepper Steak, Sausage Rolls and the everpopular Oxtail! The fish and chips is made with a proper English pub-style crispy beer batter. The rest of the food and cakes are just as delicious and very reasonably priced. It is for all the above reasons that this is an extremely special

place for me. Odd as it may sound, but this is literally where I have found my second home, and where I have come to live out my own passion – charcuterie. Through a chance meeting over a year ago, Karen Linde loved the charcuterie products that we were producing and when it came time for me to expand, Beulah was a natural fit. New and exciting developments at Beulah include the establishment of a full Deli, where people travelling the West Coast Road will be able to get fresh produce from fruit and vegetables right through to artisanal cheeses and my very own Eighteen94 CureSmiths range of Salamis and cured meats. Karen Linde, the owner and proprietor, has established much at Beulah with her own hands and it is with sheer determination and passion that this tranquil place exists. HOE KAN JY JOU KLEUTER GESOND HOU HIERDIE WINTER? TEKS DR LINDIE WALTERS

G

jj Gebruik Saline neusdruppels verskeie kere per dag.

AS JOU KLEUTER SIEK RAAK? Wanneer dit gebeur is die beste om hom so gemaklik moontlik te maak totdat die virus sy natuurlike pad stap wat so lank soos ‘n week kan duur. How to keep your weight in check during the winter months?

AFTER >>

WORDS DR DALIZE WILLEMSE

Joy Mac Master

W

Total Weight Lost: 13.1kg

inter is just around the corner, and most of us know that with the cold come cravings to eat more in order to keep our bodies warm. It generally results in the gaining of weight. Skin, Body and Health Renewal offers the perfect solution. Slender Wonder weight loss program is a programme done under the supervision of medical doctors. The Slender Wonder Programme involves daily injections and a specific, low-calorie diet. The injections assist the body to remove fat from the abnormal fat cells and turn it into energy. This means that your body starts to burn its own fat for energy, allowing weight loss while still feeling nice and warm, with no cravings at all! The Slender Wonder programme also corrects the cause of obesity, which is Leptin- resistance. The Leptin hormone is formed inside the fat cells and regulates the body’s fat metabolism. It has two functions – firstly it takes the energy out of the food we eat and supply it to the body and secondly, it communicates to the hunger center in the brain when the body has had enough so that it can stop asking for more! If you are leptin-resistant, however, none of the above takes place, therefore all the energy in the food you eat is just stored as fat in the fat cells and the brain keeps asking for more food, which causes the excess of fat collecting around your waist! j

KLOUTER KABOUTER PRE-PRIMÊRE SKOOL TEKS & FOTOS SANET LATEGAN

N

Op sport gebied gaan dit net so goed.

easuring a whopping 25 cm from head to tail, Cecil is a crossbred lionhead goldfish par excellence. Because of his enormous size, he is an only fish in the Van der Wolf home, as a large enough mate isn’t easily obtainable. Being a communicating sort of fish, Cecil comes to eat on command and provides owner Gerrit van der Wolf of The dark patches in the photos are the areas where the wounds Durbanville with much pleasure. So, as a character with were chemically cauterised. considerable presence, his name derives from another character, Cecil John Rhodes. Now aged 10, Cecil stole Van der Wolf’s heart five years ago in a Wellington Road pet shop. The price tag was a mere R30! Recently, the poor chap developed several large slow-growing fleshy growths on his flanks and head, interfering with his vision. Dr Stephen Smith of TAH Kenridge and Van der Wolf decided to take the risk of surgery. Obviously operating on a fish out of water is interesting, to say the least! Smith commented. An anaesthetic agent was added to the water until Cecil showed signs of losing his balance. The veterinary team then lifted him out of the water and onto the operating table, placing him on a wet drape and covering him with another wet surgical drape. Anaesthesia was maintained by dripping anaesthetic/water solution onto his gills, thus ensuring adequate oxygenation at the same time (fish obviously breathe by extracting oxygen from the water through their gills). Smith only removed the two largest growths to keep surgery time to a minimum and the wounds were either chemically cauterised to stop bleeding or closed with fine nylon sutures. When Smith was satisfied, Cecil was placed into another container containing fresh, dechlorinated water, given an antibiotic injection and moved slowly backwards and forwards to move water over his gills. Within a few moments he regained consciousness and recovered uneventfully. j

he Darling Trust was established by Pieter-Dirk Uys (our Patron) in 2003. The trust has a well-balanced, effective and committed board of trustees who maintain the highest level of governance and oversight. The Trust implements projects that are meticulously planned, effective and fully accountable - acting as a channel for funding our community: by identifying areas of need and assisting those who endeavour to address those needs. The Trust supports the impoverished community of Darling and surrounding areas by empowering individuals with projects through education, skills development, health care and community outreach. A consultative needs-based approach is followed with a special emphasis on the vulnerable youth. There is a high prevalence of unemployment, substance abuse, violence, abuse against women and children, teenage pregnancies and HIV/AIDS. The youth in particular is at risk. All current programmes are well researched and effectively executed. The trust has a long-standing track record of delivery and is making a real and sustainable difference in the lives of Darling residents. In 2009 we completed The Darling Community Swimming Pool and Education Centre - which includes a multi-purpose activities area and an Early Childhood Development centre. The funding for the structures was raised in the community and still remains our task to ensure the sustainability of these projects. OUR PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES INCLUDE: Early Childhood Development Programme Grade R – Evita’s Darlings, Darling Early Learning Programme (additional educational programme providing early literacy development for pre-primary school children), Darling AHA - Read Programme (remedial literacy programme), Life Skills Programme (aimed at the youth)

The investment in their community will send the message that they matter, that they can be proud of where they come from and that the youth do have a future. a Petite Grange (The Little Barn) is situated in the country village of Darling on the West Coast, approximately 68kms from Cape Town. The barn was built in 1916 as a shelter for the livestock on the farm Langfontein. It was beautifully renovated in 2002 and now sits proudly on the hill overlooking the village and the farmlands beyond. The accommodation includes two bedrooms, one with a Queen and the second with two single beds beautifully furnished with 100% Cotton percale bedlinen on a top of the range mattresses. The bathroom is neat with a bath/shower and plenty space for wash bags. The open plan lounge and dining room is cozy and has comfy couches to relax and read a book. The kitchen is fully equipped with a chef style gas hob and electric oven, AMC Classic cookware, a full size fridge-freezer, Nespresso coffee machine, kettle, toaster and soda stream. There is a wood burning fireplace in the lounge that heats the whole house for chilly winter weekends. The cupboards are stocked with staples and condiments in case you forget to pack. There is a bookshelf filled with books, you can help yourself and take one with you or leave one behind. The newly built patio has a built in braai, a table and chairs to enjoy a glass of wine and the sun setting over the village. Enjoy the abundant birdlife and watch the cattle moving across the fields across the valley. La Petite Grange is pet friendly and the perimeter fence is secure. There are many walks and mountain bike trails to be enjoyed by you and your four legged companions. Yzerfontein beach is 20 minutes drive away and West Coast National Park down the R27. ‘I just wanted to let you know that we recently had a wonderful holiday in South Africa, the Western Cape and one of the highlights was our stay at La Petit Grange in Darling, owned by Nicky and Paul Brouwer. It was so charming with beautiful views out over the village and the hills beyond. We felt very at home there especially with a glass of wine on the stoep! Nicky and Paul are very welcoming and helpful. Nicky had made suggestions for local places to visit and arranged a trip for us to drive out to !Khwa ttu and sundowners up on the tops which was wonderful. Highly recommended!’ RUTH CANE ‘This was our 2nd visit to La Petite Grange. Since our last visit the main bedroom has had a makeover and is looking lovely, light and fresh. The changes to the stoep and the built-in braai were welcome additions. The new coat of white paint adds to the little barn’s charm. I didn’t think it was possible to improve on a perfect getaway place, but I was clearly wrong. Thank you once again Nicky and Paul, we enjoyed every minute of our stay.’ ELSABE TROLLIP ‘The cottage is well set up with everything you would need and lots of extras. Nicky makes sure you are settled in and is very approachable. Lots to do in Darling with pleasant walks around the cottage. Great that they are dog friendly with secure gardens front and back.’ MARK HAYWORTH

TO DO

A Culinary Journey the

WEST COAST WAY

WORDS TRACY BARTLETT

T

he Cape West Coast is renowned for its warm hospitality, pristine beaches and spectacular scenery. What it also offers in abundance is delectable cuisine, from the freshest of fish to hearty traditional dishes - and everything in between. In fact, it can be said that the entire region is a veritable smorgasbord just waiting to be explored, but with so many tantalising options, where does one start? To add a little structure and adventure to exploring the wide open spaces of the Cape West Coast, West Coast Way has created two inspirational routes: the heritage-inspired GroeneKloof Route, and the BlueBenguela Route which focuses more on leisure activities. But what they have in common is great venues to enjoy great food and fine wine, and at most of these 21 points of interest, a feast awaits. The GroeneKloof Route starts at the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve and takes in several fascinating points of cultural interest as well as a couple of oceanfront stops along the way, ending at !Khwa ttu San Cultural & Educational Centre where both good food and wine can be enjoyed after the guided insight into San Culture. Other culinary hot spots include the Geelbek Restaurant in the West Coast National Park, Groote Post Wine Cellars and, of course Yzerfontein which is best known for its fresh seafood. Here you have the choice of relaxing in a beachfront restaurant to enjoy the catch of the day or joining the local fishermen in the laid back local pastime of angling to catch your very own snoek. This, of course, is best enjoyed cooked over an open fire with a glass of wine or ice cold brew in hand. The BlueBenguela Route focuses on the coastal villages and at almost every stop you are spoilt for choice of venues to enjoy kreef and platters laden with fresh seafood. However, if you want to enjoy traditional comfort food you can just pop across the R27 to Thali Thali Game Lodge for hearty venison potjie, visit the beachfront Boesmanland Plaaskombuis in Langebaan or visit Die Plaasmol in Hopefield for a country experience the whole family will love. But rest assured; whichever route you take, you can be certain of a culinary journey to remember. j West Coast Way is your gateway to the vibrant Cape West Coast.
