FROM YOU
Mamre Garden Competition
Street Life in Yzerfontein
FROM BEA HEYMANN
FROM MARY ANN BOSCH
Excitement over the Garden Competition is rising in Mamre, and people are viewing their gardens with fresh eyes. The Garden Competition is the latest initiative of the Revitalisation of Mamre Project. The idea is to raise awareness in the community of the difference that improvement of their immediate environment can make to their quality of life, and will also contribute to the visitor experience in this beautiful and historic West Coast village. As an encouragement for people to enter this first garden competition, the Mamre Community Development Trust is offering
entrants free plants, free advisors and free compost and manure. Large donations of prize money is a further enticement for the community to get involved. A panel of experienced judges has been appointed, who will announce their decision in early October. The grand finale will be the Spring Garden Festival, with the awards ceremony, much celebration, a country market and all the gardens of the competitors on show. Everyone from Yzerfontein and Darling will be invited, as well as people from the other nearby West Coast towns. We look forward to welcoming everyone! For more info: 021 433 2221j

The markets will take a break during winter, so be sure not to miss the last markets for the season at Vygevallei on 5 April & Groote Post Vineyards on 26 April. We hope that everyone have a blessed Easter and enjoy all the activities on offer in Yzerfontein & Darling. We welcome contributions for the magazine & Bfound newsletters, so please send us your stories & photos. Weskus Groete! j

THE EASTER ISSUE 2015 j
Hurry up and wait! Toe is daar weer ‘n skommeling. Enige iets is beter as Die volgende deelnemers verlaat die Kokkedoor stoor...
I LOVE YZER DARLING
FOTO CLAUDIO VELASQUES ROJAS
Gaan huistoe seun. Dis net menslik om groot-kop te kry as so baie mense ‘n bohaai oor jou maak.
Soos Emo Adams, Miss World, Rolene Strauss, akteurs en sangers. Wow, wat ‘n gevoel! By my restaurant Lekka by die See is natuurlik ‘n heel ander storie.

MEJ YZERFONTEIN
O
My surfboard, sonroom, ‘n lekker paar sonbrille, shorts en my familie. Mense, dans, musiek, kuns, in daai volgorde.
FOTO MARY ANN BOSCH
Kuns. Ek vind my kuns klas ontspannend, want ek kan my kreatiwiteit uitleef. Daar is mos nie ‘n regte of verkeerde manier in kuns nie. Wie is Susan?
Ek glo dis my belangrikste skeppingsdoel. Hoe het jy met fotografie begin? Ek is kunssinnig. Ek is ‘n Kapenaar in murg en been. Omswerwinge sluit in Kwa-Zulu, Suid-Kaap en Witrivier in Mpumalanga waar ek ‘n laerskool juffrou was.

When did you start your business and how did it begin? Daisy Clothing began in 2010. I had thought about the name long before the first outfit was made. I had a vision of a girls clothing range that is unique and only available in limited quantities. When and where did you trade at your first market? My first market was at Shelly Point Hotel and Spa in 2010. My first ever customer became a very close friend and so did others too. Describe your product: Daisy Clothing strives to be unique and to not follow trends. We cater for that special occasion outfit, as well as something for a play date. What is your best seller? Each season has its own best seller, but the one outfit that sells every season in every colour I make, is the creased top and lace leggings. What are the difficulties to overcome as a market trader? Markets can be hard at times. But you must remember that markets are one of your cheapest ways to market your product. You must also be willing to take the good with the bad like bad weather and quiet days. Why do you love participating markets? As I work all week to make new stock, market days are my time to relax and social with fellow crafters and meet new people. It is nice to be outdoors as most of the week is spend in my workroom. 5 Tips for new market traders: yy Put effort into your display. This will attract people to your stall. yy Ensure that your product is of a high quality. yy Do not just sit and ignore your customers, be kind and helpful, but don’t overwhelm them. yy You must be willing to take the quiet days. Just remember the good days make up for it. yy Most important, do not get stuck in a rut - customers know when you have been selling the same product for years. Always make something new so that your product stay fashionable. Sometimes just changing the colour can make a big difference. yy Love what you do and do what you love. j Where to find DAISY CLOTHING: 083 434 3511 j anifourie@gmail.com I j Weskus Market j Every 1st Sunday of the month. HOME
ONE MAN’S JUNK IS ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE.
W
WORDS KAREN MOYLE karen@karenbinteriors.co.za 082 573 7736 www.karenbinteriors.co.za
hen setting up house and striving for a lovely home, it does not mean one has to go to the smartest interior stores and decorating houses to create a loving, warm and elegant space. From generation to generation items have been handed down in families. Some people attach no value to these and others love them and turn them into great statement pieces in their homes. Here I share some ideas of what can be done with what many people, who don’t share my passion for recycling, would call junk. I love junk. Seeing the beauty in an old rusty or dilapidated item. Be it an old wooden window frame, a door, a piece of wood, a gate or a light. Where do we look? Anywhere! You only need an eye, loads of imagination and a free spirit to turn your home into an inspiring space. Your home is like a picture frame. Fill the rooms with things that reflect who you are. Never underestimate your local 2nd hand builder’s shop, animal welfare shops, visit junk shops, garage sales, flea markets, places where people take their unwanted items to be sold. Fill your home with treasure, save the planet, recycle and reuse. Old books can be stacked to become a coffee table with a glass top, a desk or a real conversation piece in your sitting room. Beautiful cuts of old brocade, pieces of old tapestry or damask, even inexpensive new fabric with an interesting design, can be framed in old wood or an old wooden window frame. Cover with glass to adorn the wall behind a couch or use as a throw over an old chair. To lend an ostentatious air use wooden trestles to lean old paintings, prints or large family pictures up against. Use items in other ways than traditionally intended. Old hat boxes make lovely bedside tables, or even mismatched chairs can be used as bedside tables. The wall behind the bed can be transformed into a lovely focal point by hanging old fabric on a rod from the ceiling to the floor, or an old wooden windowsill salvaged from a builders yard, can be placed like a shelf behind and above the bed and
decorated with books, pictures or candles. From old burglar bars create a headboard, by adding small metal roses making it soft and romantic with a French touch, and let a lovely room come to life. A rustic table made from scaffolding planks adorned with roses, candles and old crockery, white serviettes and old cutlery, makes a Sunday meal or any meal a special event. A table, made from a solid wooden plank picked up outside in a farm field and 2 solid tree stumps as base, create a lovely outside entertainment area and dressed up with old miss matched crockery, glasses and silver gives a stylish air to any festive occasion. Tin buckets filled with large bunches of flowers from the fields, or foliage from the garden, can adorn your outside entertainment area or can be placed inside your home to dress up an empty corner. Look around you and salvage. My home is a testimony to one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. I believe one should create your own unique personal space that interprets and reflects your personality. A home should be true to the people or person who will inhabit it. My homes featured in the following magazines: Home Owner, Ideas, Leef, Good Taste and De Kat. In the words of Marcia Margolius, well known interior decorator and author of various interior books, Have you ever wanted to transform something archaic into something innovative? This is what Karen from Karen B interiors has done with an old farmyard barn. Taking the dilapidated and turning it into decadence is exactly what she did. GARDEN
‘Tis the Season to be Mulching...
A
WORDS DAVID COLESHILL PHOTOS LIBBES LOUBSER.
s the summer peaks and slowly ebbs its way towards autumn, the garden becomes a place of mystery and beautiful balance which can be easily maintained by following a few simple rules. Keep the early morning chill out of the soil, by adding a healthy layer of mulched material. Not only will this be good preparation for your winter planting of bulbs, Namaqualand Daisies, Ursinias and Bokbaai Vygies, but also a chance to bulk your mulch with all of the perennials that have flowered and have been cut back to ground level. The start of April running into May brings about cuttings season for all the hardwood shrubs and flowers such as carnations and dianthus. Making sure to keep your soil nice and moist, giving a liquid fertilizer twice a month will ensure healthy growth of new shoots and the vigorous growth of already established plants. The vegetable garden should not be neglected either with the opportunity to plant beetroot, cabbages, carrots, celery, garlic, lettuce, swiss chard and onions. Watering every three days should suffice. This includes pot plants which must be moist, but not soaked through. One of the wonders of the West Coast is the Bokbaai Vygie or Doreanthus Bellidiformis. Sow seeds from March for an early bloom, but usually appearing naturally from August to mid October in and around Yzerfontein. The Bokbaai Vygie route, just outside Yzerfontein, was donated by Trix and Willem de Villiers, who wanted to share their passion for the veld and West Coast. One must almost be on hands and knees to see the microcosm of tiny plants that abound in the area, including a plethora of colour provided by its namesake, a delight to the senses for young and old. j

FINANCE
Riglyne vir die Werkgewer & Werknemer Verhouding.
Y

4 egg whites. 1/4 tsp cream of tartar. 1/4 tsp salt. 1 cup castor sugar. 2 tbsp corn starch. 2 tsp white vinegar. Preheat oven to 220 degrees C. Place baking paper on a baking tray and by using the bottom of a 22cm round cake tin or a 34cm x 11cm rectangular flan dish, draw the outline of the base on the paper. Beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar and salt until stiff peaks form. While the beater is still running add the sugar 1 tablespoon at a time until all the sugar has been mixed in and the meringue is thick and glossy. Sift the corn starch over the mixture, add the vinegar and mix well until combined. Scoop the mixture onto the drawn lines and shape the meringue within the drawn lines, making the edges higher than the middle of the meringue. Place in the oven and immediately reduce the heat to 150 degrees C and bake for 30 minutes. Reduce the heat to 120 degrees C and bake for another 45 minutes. Switch the oven off and let the meringues cool inside the oven. Once cool, turn the meringue over and carefully remove the baking paper and place in a serving dish.

WINE
CHENIN BLANC FOR EASTER!
WORDS CHARLES WITHINGTON www.darlingwine.co.za 074 194 1711
T
here are several things I love about Easter but probably first and foremost is the fact that it signals the end of those hot summer days and the beauty of autumn on the way. It is also about family, but without the frenetic activity that Christmas involves. It is about Easter eggs, with children shrieking in delight as they discover hidden treasures in the dewy garden and once again indicating season. Most important of all, it is the season of the risen Lord. As I write this I am in England and Holland on a trade visit and this provides some added and relevant perspective; there is much to be proud of (read of Nando’s becoming an iconic brand in England - google: Nandos-how-did-it-become-such-acult-hit) but alas, the oscarzumaeskom epithet is a reality.

In the UK Swartland is big. Whether this is long term or simply because right now they have some writeable people and trendy wines, remains to be seen. But regardless, the good news is that they are attracting favourable attention in the wine press, proving to be great ambassadors for our wines and for our country. CHENIN BLANC is my choice for Easter wine. Yeah – we all love Sauvignon Blanc, we all know how really, really good Darling is at doing Sauvignon Blanc and we all know how many very smart wine producers do their grape shopping in Darling, but reality is, that all this applies to Chenin Blanc too. In fact, in terms of style, Chenin Blanc is a far more versatile wine - wooded, unwooded, dry, off-dry and even MCC (simply stunning one just released from De Morgenzon). With overseas markets, and in terms of white wine, there is much to be said for Chenin. Most importantly there is a link to South Africa and, unlike Pinotage, there has never been negative undertones. Secondly, and stylishly, Chenin is a winner in that, well made, it has a incredible fullness of flavour to satisfy the most demanding palate and yet even the lesser ones have a softness and drinkability with wide appeal. Chenin does have the WOW factor; for too long it has been regarded as the poor relation, and overlooked. With a few friends you may find it fun to do a blind tasting, trying something different. I have on more than one occasion given a wine friend one of my favourites, tightly wrapped, with the simple instruction to drink a glass first, before revealing the bottle and the label. At the end of the day this is what it is all about – enjoying wine as one does food – knowing what one likes but being prepared to explore. j

DINE EIGHTEEN’94 WEST COAST FOOD HEROES
Hilda’s Kitchen at Groote Post MODERN COUNTRY CUISINE WITH GROOTE HEART WORDS GIL FERREIRA www.idigdapig.com 083 296 4954 TWITTER @whodapig
O
ne of my favourite West Coast places is Groote Post wine farm. Not only do I love the wines, but it also is truly a magnificent setting with beautifully manicured paddocks and a fabulous old homestead and outbuildings that are national monuments. A few years ago I visited the Groote Post restaurant, Hilda’s Kitchen. What fascinated me then was the fact that the restaurant paid homage to its, once matriarch, Hildagonda Duckitt. Hildagonda was a famous author of one of South Africa’s first cookery books. I guess one can say that she was one of South Africa’s first real foodies. (Read more about the fascinating history of Groote Post and Hilda’s Kitchen at www.grootepost.com). Getting back to my latest experience at Hilda’s Kitchen, I guess the welcome note on the menu gives one the best summary of what awaits you: …We appreciate your visit to our oasis on the West Coast and sincerely hope you enjoy your time with us. Our Modern Country cooking only uses the freshest produce, much locally sourced and grown and the menu is designed to compliment the outstanding wines of Groote Post. From the minute you drive up to the Groote Post farm buildings you are transported to a bygone era, however, as Shaun and Debbie McLaughlin point out that when they became involved at Hilda’s Kitchen 12 years ago they so easily could have become stuck in the past, yet they made a conscious decision to produce Modern Country Cuisine – and that is exactly what you get. Debbie is the quintessential passionate chef, spending hours and hours a day perfecting her art. This shows clearly through the menu that changes almost on a daily basis! There really are only 2 dishes that remain constant on the menu and that is the Old Man’s Steak Roll and the Pork Belly. I was told by Shaun that they tried to take the Steak Roll off the menu twice and both times this was met with vehement resistance from the Hilda’s Kitchen faithful - so 12 years on and it is still there! The ingredients are mostly locally sourced with the lamb, venison and much of the vegetables coming right from the Groote Post farm. The rest is sourced from the Darling region. I had the Aubergine and Tomato Tart to start – the pastry was flaky and light, and the tomato had just the right amount of tartness to balance the richness of the cheese and aubergine – a fantastic way to start the meal. As I am a pig man, my heart was drawn to the pork belly for mains, but I had that the last time I was here, so I had to try the Old Man’s Steak Roll. This meal epitomises the philosophy at Hilda’s kitchen – under promise and over deliver! On the menu you read Steak Roll – but it is so much more than that – it actually takes your breath away! A beautiful ciabatta roll with THE EASTER ISSUE 2015 j
medium rare medallions of beef fillet (you can obviously choose the way you want your steak done), smothered in a rich roasted garlic aioli, served with hand cut crispy chips. What more could one ask? To finish I had the chocolate brownies and vanilla ice cream – rich and rewarding is all that needs to be said! As the menu changes regularly I will not delve into what else was on offer. You can simply get a sample of what is served off the Groote Post website or when you contact them. The menu itself is well priced and as mentioned above, well paired with Groote Post wines. By the way, the wines are basically sold at cellar door prices, so you really are not going to get better value and quality at a world class vineyard restaurant anywhere! What further makes Hilda’s Kitchen unique is the way that it fits into the rest of the Groote Post way of life. Because Groote Post is a destination venue, make sure you have enough time to go on one of the Game Drives (winner of the 2014 Klink Wine Tourism Award for the most unusual and memorable attraction on a wine farm), do some tasting of the world class Groote Post wines and then step into Hilda’s Kitchen for a fantastic meal. Hilda’s Kitchen and Groote Post has also become somewhat renowned for special occasions and celebrations such as birthdays and daytime weddings. The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday for lunches, and it is extremely important to call for reservations on weekends because of their popularity and special events. The Pentz Family, Shaun and Debbie McLaughlin and the rest of the Groote Post team certainly get my vote for West Coast Food Heroes! Make sure that on your next trip up the West Coast you make this a definite stop. j RESERVATIONS SHAUN MCLAUGHLIN 083 325 4148 mclaughlin@worldonline.co.za WWW.GROOTEPOST.COM

evrou het vir Meneer ingebring. Mid-vyftigs, 30 jaar getroud; oulike kinders, hardwerkend. Voorheen benadeelde mense van ‘n klein Bolandse dorpie. Diep Christelik. Soliede beginsels, waardestelsel gegiet in yster.
Jy wil mos. Hy’t geen verdediging nie; geen beskuldigings nie. Hy vat sy pak soos ‘n man. Dis wat mammie wou gehad het. Ek wonder later of hy ooit iets gaan sê.
Veral Mevrou, want Meneer is bedeesd, tjoepstil en ‘n bietjie soos ‘n verhoorafwagtende. Skuldig. Want sien, verduidelik Mevrou, die man het ‘n demoon. Die demoon het net eenkeer toegeslaan. Meneer gee onderwys by die plaaslike skool, al 30 jaar lank. En so dreun Mevrou voort vir drie sessies. Sy’s seer, daar was verloëning. Dis verstaanbaar.
Hy praat uiteindelik. Ek luister. Dis ‘n monoloog. Drie jaar saamgery. En hy sê vir my, dok, sê my iets. Ek sê dis reg, vra maar. En hy sê dok, as ‘n koerant dan nou soe in djou gesig vaswaai, gaan djy hom lies, of gaat djy nie. Ek dink dinge was toe ok. BEAUTY
Facials WORDS MEGON BURDEN The skin is our biggest organ and we need to take good care of it and protect it against UV damage to the best of our ability! We have 3 main skin types: jj oily jj dry jj permanent diffused redness Dehydration (water loss) is not a skin type, but rather a skin condition that most people suffer from. A monthly facial is good to support your skincare regime if you are using a good professional skincare range. They do contain more active ingredients such as growth factors which stimulate collagen production up to five times faster than double strength prescription retinoids. Lamelle research laboratories makes use of growth factors in their products. Megz Hair & Beauty is a stockist of Lamelle products. Peels is a word that most clients dread. With the lovely process of life called ageing, our cell turnover cycle slows down causing dead skin build-up on the surface of our skin, giving it a grey and sluggish appearance. Peels enhance and promote efficient cell turnover, giving the skin a chance to produce new skin cells in the basal layer of the epidermis. Peels also addresses the dehydration factor mentioned above by putting moisture back into the skin - in other words giving your skin the glow that everyone will be talking about. So give your skin the attention it deserves and book your monthly facial for a glowing, radiant skin! j

he original Darling Primary school, located in Pastorie Street and founded in 1896, was extended in 1920 with an annex, to be home to the music-, art- and woodwork departments. When the WCED (Western Cape Department of Education) decided to build a bigger school in Kalkoentjie Street in 1974, they kept this annex aside as a space allocated for early childhood development.
need to be ready and adjusted for school at the end of Grade R. We follow the CAPS curriculum and aim to use all five senses in the learning process.
Darling Pre-Primary enrolled its first pre-schoolers in November 1977. It was through dedication, hard work and a vision/mission by the community that we still have our lovely school to benefit Darling’s young children.
As stated in our vision and mission policy, we would like every child to be able to say the following at the end of his/her Grade R year: jj I am loved. / Ek is geliefd. jj I can succeed. / Ek kan suksesvol wees. jj I have the power to make decisions. / Ek kan besluite neem. jj I have a purpose in life. / Ek het ‘n doel in die lewe.
Our school is an independent Grade R institution. Darling Pre-Primary is registered with the WCED and receives termly subsidies. We are a dual medium school and choose to not have a class larger than 25 pupils every year. By keeping the class small we can ensure the individual attention the children
Although we strive to have the little ones ready for big school, we also aim to send emotionally strong individuals, who dispose over very good social skills, into life after Pre-Primary.
If your little one is ready for Grade R, contact Petro or Fiona to visit the school. j

PETS
The Big Itch
I
WORDS DR JEN DEVERSON
t seems that over the last few years the number of dogs and cats that are visiting the vet for itchy, sore skin is on the increase. There is no real published info on why this might be, but I’d put the changing environment at the top of my list of underlying causes. I am often visited by an exhausted owner, with an equally exhausted pet because neither human or itchy pet is getting any sleep due to the ongoing scratching, chewing and licking. If the itching has been going on for a while the skin is often inflamed and infected, with patches of hair loss and a non too pleasant smell. Why do dogs and cats itch? The list of reasons is a long one, and the first step in finding out why is to determine whether this is an itch that becomes a rash or whether this is a rash that has become an itch. The former points to an underlying allergic cause, the latter suggests a skin infection. A parasitic infection with fleas or one of the mange mites, can cause either. An infection in the skin can cause inflammation which can start off an itch reaction and the greater the itch, the more the scratching and chewing which in turn causes more inflammation so more triggers to scratch and so the itch cycle spins. Determining the cause of the itch involves a detailed history, a thorough physical examination and then skin scrapes, possible skin cultures and blood tests and maybe even a biopsy of the affected skin. If mange mites are found, an appropriate treatment will be started. If fleas are present, every effort needs to be made to rid the pet’s environment of fleas as these jumping brown pests are a major cause of itching and skin problems in our pets. In fact, I don’t start treating for any other causes of itchy
skin until the itchy dog or cat is flea free! Skin infections are usually treated with a series of medicated shampoo baths with or without antibiotics. The allergic itchy pet is often a challenge to treat and manage. The list of things in the environment that your dog or cat may be allergic to is extensive. It could be grass, a pollen from a certain tree in the neighbour’s garden, the new bed that you just spoilt them with, the omnipresent house dust mite, those little tasty treats that you tell your vet you never give... Unless the underlying trigger can be found (blood can be tested for allergens but this is an expensive and sometimes not particularly helpful test) the aim of treatment is to provide relief from the scratching. Usually a combination of medication and therapies are used including antihistamines, fatty acid supplements, skin specific prescription diets, medicated and hypoallergenic shampoos and corticosteroids. Other options include drugs that suppress specific cells that cause the itch reaction or a course of vaccinations that desensitise your pet to the offending allergens. So give you and your pet a break from the thump - thumping and the lick - licking and see your local vet about getting to the bottom of your pet’s big itch. Here’s to happy, healthy pets and well rested owners! j
