Everything appears to be slowly changing since the unquiet past of the town is hidden behind a feeling of love bordering on jealousy. This is a legacy of Hellenism which can be seen in the stones of an ancient fountainhead gurgling licentious and tragic love of virgin lovers carved in stone. The sea which surrounds the town and the hot light of the sun which furtively peeks in the windy alleys and in the intimacy of its yards are the historical explanation, if possible capital, of the fate of this happy isle. It is looked for by people who make them be sweetly tended by the succession of radiant dawns and red-hot sunsets by feasts and devotions listed in a kind of collective behavioural calendar which has become stratified over centuries of partaken traditions and historical events. The best way to tell this town and these enchanted places is through its history and the wild strength of nature. The hospitality of its citizens and the masterpieces of art such as Baroque portals overtopped by coats of arms and loggias full of flowers overlooking courtyards shaded by glimpses of light in narrow alleys are the pulse of the city. Everything is marked by the rhythm of the past actualized in experiences of daily routine.

Tra i tanti negozietti tipici si segnalano: Il laboratorio di Souvenir Acqua Marina che si trova affacciato sul porto commerciale sulla Riviera Cristoforo Colombo ed è specializzato nella lavorazione del corallo rosso locale e della madreperla.

Quattro i cicli calendariali: del fuoco purificatore e della gozzoviglia, dal falò di Sant’Antonio Abate al martedì grasso; della penitenza e della resurrezione, dal mercoledì delle ceneri alla Pasqua con i riti della Settimana Santa; della spensierata vacanza, dalla fiera del Canneto alla festa di Santa Cristina, con la cuccagna a mare, e le luminarie del Carmine, del Sacro Cuore e di San Luigi; dell’aspettazione, con la pastorale che scandisce le tappe di avvicinamento al Natale nelle vigilie di Santa Cecilia, Sant’Andrea, Immacolata e Santa Lucia.

Da sempre il popolo gallipolino pratica, quasi con ostentata teatralità, eppure con convinta partecipazione e con gaia esuberanza, la parentesi carnevalesca, che lega, forse inconsapevolmente, a trascorsi paganeggianti. Non a caso ne scandisce la sequenza temporale con riferimenti a credenze e a pratiche precristiane, quale significativamente rappresenta il rito propiziatorio del fuoco, col quale il gallipolino suole iniziare il Carnevale, il 17 gennaio, col bruciare all’aperto sulle pubbliche piazze cataste enormi di ramaglie d’ulivo. Ѐ il rito delle “Focareddhe” che, dedicate al patrono cristiano del fuoco, S. Antonio Abate, si accendevano un tempo nei cento crocicchi della città, oggi trasmigrate nel Borgo nuovo. Il Carnevale era ed è vissuto ancora in continua osmosi tra paganesimo e cristianesimo, tra fervore naturalistico e religiosità popolare intensamente vissuta. Non a caso la maschera tradizionale del popolo è “lu Tidoru”: Teodoro. Narra la tradizione che Teodoro, un giovane soldato gallipolino, fosse stato trattenuto, con grande dolore della madre sua, lontano dalla sua terra, coltivando la grande speranza di poter ritornare a casa prima della fine del Carnevale. Fino a Dio erano giunte le suppliche di sua madre, la “Caremma”, che concedendo una proroga di due giorni (i giorni del-

It is no coincidence that time is marked by pre-Christian ceremonies such as the purifying fire rite with bonfires made of a mountain of olive wood, which Carnival is started by, on 17th January. This is the Focareddhe rite dedicated to St. Anthony Abbot, the Christian patron of fire and these bonfires were in the past lit up at one hundred crossroads of the town, now in the New Borough. Carnival was, and still is, celebrated with interpenetrations between pagan and Christian traditions and with naturalistic frenzy and popular religiosity. It is no chance that the traditional and popular mask is lu Tidoru, Teodoro. According to tradition, Teodoro, a young soldier of Gallipoli, was forced to stay far from his hometown but he hoped he could be back home before the end of carnival. His desperate mother, implored God praying for his return and God granted two more days, the so called days of the old woman, to carnival festival to permit Teodoro to come back home and jump into the whirlwind of dances and guzzles. He was so greedy that, on that tragic Shrove Tuesday, he ate tons of

Theodore kam in der Stadt und war in der Lage um den Karneval teilzunehmen. Es wird gesagt, dass Teodoro war zu diesem Faschingsdienstag Würstchen, Schweinefleisch und Frikadellen gegessen hatte. Mit „Teodoro“ starb auch den Karneval und alle die Festlichkeit vor der 40 Tage der Fastenzeit. Und am Mitternacht blieben alle die Einwohner von Gallipoli am Fuße des Franziskaner Glockenturms in der Altstadt in der Hoffnung auf eine göttliche Vergebung. Der Karneval war ein Moment des unbeschwerten Euphorie für die Einwohner von Gallipoli. Der Karneval meinte: tausend Verkleidungen mit armen oder auch kostbaren Stoffen, in einer allgemei-

E il Carnevale rappresentava così per il gallipolino il momento della spensierata euforia. Impazzava allora per le vie del borgo antico prima di trasmigrare nel borgo nuovo, con i mille travestimenti realizzati con i poveri panni ma anche con preziose seterie, in un generale coinvolgimento di tutti i ceti sociali dando vita a cento e cento maschere e a mozzi frizzanti e gioiosi, che ti costringevano a ridere e a scherzare, dimentichi delle naturali inquietudini della vita. Con l’inizio del nuovo secolo fece la

Ad opera della costituita “Associazione Turistica pro Gallipoli” che volle organizzare nel 1954, dopo qualche timido tentativo, la prima grande sfilata di carri allegorico – grotteschi, nella convinta consapevolezza di dover incanalare nella prospettiva turistica le intrinseche potenzialità espressive di tanti piccoli artigiani ed imprenditori, che da sempre avevano avuto dimestichezza con la cartapesta, la cui lavorazione aveva avuto precedenti significativi ed esaltanti con Flora, Pantile e Scorrano. L’esordio, se non esaltante, fu incoraggiante tanto da essere ripetuto negli anni successivi con successo sempre sensibilmente crescente, tale da non avere alla fine più rivali in contesto salentino, e con un concorso di pubblico, nelle tre giornate di sfilate, sempre eccezionalmente altissimo, con punte superiori anche alle 120.000 persone, assiepanti l’arteria principale del Borgo Nuovo. Die Orange stellte einen Fastenkalender, dass man Woche für Woche wurde aktualisiert. Am Osternsonntag wurde die Puppe verbrennt.
