Remembrance Day

Paying Respect This Remembrance Day

This Friday, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, a ray of sunlight will once more illuminate the word LOVE on the Stone of Remembrance at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance. On this anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended World War I in 1918, we pause to remember the sacrifices of all who have fought on behalf of our nation. As the bugle resonates we remember the 102,000 Australian soldiers who have died in wars during the past century, and the many thousands more who were injured. We remember the Unknown Soldier, and through him all of our 35,527 unknown soldiers who died in the two World Wars. Many wear poppies as an outward sign of remembrance, inspired by those which grew on Flanders fields amongst the fallen soldiers in the Great War, which also help raise funds to assist the RSL in undertaking welfare work. Those who gather at the Shrine and other memorials around the country will lay wreaths and observe the Commemoration Ritual, composed of The Ode, Last Post, The Silence and Reveille.
