Melbourne Trams

Rolling Through The Years

Boasting one of the largest tram networks on the planet, Melbourne has long been synonymous with her trams. It’s no wonder, given that various incarnations of the old rattlers have been rolling through our streets for over 125 years now, graduating from horse-drawn carts to systems with engine houses, and successfully going electric in the early 1900s. Our trams survived the tumultuous 1950s and 60s when other capital cities ripped up their tramways in favour of diesel buses, considered more fashionable at the time. Now Melbourne’s trams are respected for the character they lend our streets, not to mention their functionality – passengers take around 180 million tram trips in the city each year! Amongst the hundreds of regular trams servicing dozens of routes on a network of 250 kilometres of track, two exceptions bear special mention. The free City Circle tram runs on a circuit around the CBD taking in Melbourne landmarks including Federation Square and St Paul’s Cathedral. If the journey gives you an appetite for more, consider the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant, which serves luncheon, Early Dinner and Late Dinner daily as diners watch the streets roll by.
