Rounding The Final Bend
Bleary eyed cycling fans will soon be able to catch up on their sleep after nights spent glued to the spectacle of dozens of the world’s fittest men riding past some of the most beautiful scenery you are ever likely to see in the gruelling and magnificent Tour de France. After setting off almost three weeks ago from the Vendée region on the central French coast, scores of determined cyclists are closing in on the finish line and the Arc de Triomph, with the winner bound to hold the trophy aloft before the end of the weekend. The first Tour since the retirement of seven-time winner Lance Armstrong, this year’s 3471km route encompassed climbing the 2645m high Col du Galibier twice in celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the first Tour inclusion of the mountain pass. Most of the demanding route was confined to France, although stages 17 and 18 included a visit to Pinerolo, Italy. 3.2 million Euros in prize money will be awarded, but clearly it’s more than just money motivating these elite athletes to perform such extraordinary feats, making this a most inspiring event.
