To the pessimist we’re entering one of the least loved times of the year – tax time. Optimists, however, see it as potentially rewarding, not to mention the start of a brand spanking new financial year which might just be their most prosperous yet. If you fall into the former category, and the thought of sorting through endless receipts and statements has you tearing your hair out, then perhaps the best way to minimise the pain is to start immediately and set in place an efficient filing system that sees the end of the financial year become a much less stressful time. Organisation is the key, and along with a reasonable knowledge of what you can claim (in the absence of a trusted tax agent or accountant the ATO website will furnish you with the necessary information) you can breeze through tax time rather than adding another wrinkle to your brow every time it rolls around. Many different methods have something to offer, from employing a sophisticated colour-coded system to using a collection of shoe boxes, and you can even claim the costs associated with filing your tax return.
