Summer Outdoor Cafés Sipping In The Streets

Melburnians pride themselves on living in a city with a coffee culture renowned around the world, and with the warmer weather that late spring and summer bring, sippers are spilling out into the streets to savour their favourite espressos. Folded umbrellas are open once more, patio heaters have been removed, outdoor tables and chairs are no longer prey to raindrops each day, and the prospect of sitting outdoors at a café and enjoying a drink alfresco is drawing scores of thirsty patrons. Well before the first espresso machines were brought over by post-war immigrants in the middle of last century, we had the splendid coffee palaces of the 1880s, and for most of the time since the people of Melbourne, and their visitors, have delighted in the aromatic caffeinated beverage. But for those of you who prefer a cup of tea or hot chocolate, there’s plenty of room on the pavements too. After all, what better way is there to while away a warm summer’s hour or two than watching the world go by with a friend at an outdoor café?
