Sadly, no one has a crystal ball that can predict the future with 100 per cent accuracy but there are a number of key indicators that can give us a pretty good idea of where the market’s headed: The downward trend in interest rates together with the lower property prices that we’ve been experiencing over recent months all point towards improved affordability which usually precedes an upswing. Supply on the current market is notably contracted as a result of the soft market conditions and the basic law of supply and demand would suggest prices will start to move upwards as demand outstrips supply.

Unemployment figures are low, and the overall demand for housing is expected to remain strong given population growth from births plus interstate and international migration. Melbourne remains one of the most desirable cities in Australia in terms of property and this characteristic is not going to change. So, as we look towards a new year, the indicators suggest the market is well-positioned for a rebound in 2012.
