Melbourne’s Architectural History Houses in Australia are an eclectic mix of architectural styles with many of them emulating European or British architecture, due to our strong British heritage. Architectural design during the Victorian period (c. 1840-c. 1890) incorporated several different styles. Examples include the Tudor, Georgian and Italianate designs as well as the terrace house which is still prominent now in many inner Melbourne neighborhoods. Ripplonlea in Elsternwick and Werribee Park are both strong examples of Italianate design.

Next came the Federation period (c. 1890- c. 1915). Buildings at this time were primarily Edwardian in style but called “Federation” due to Australia becoming a nation in its own right in 1901. Houses comprised cream painted decorative timber features, tall chimneys and fretwork. Styles of the late 20th Century have largely been derived from the current world architectural trends, or have been imitative of previous Australian styles. They include brick veneer, timber and fibro cottages as well as the popular Queenslander. Contemporary styles from 2000 onwards include post modernism, modernism and pop architecture - think Sam Newman’s previous home in St Kilda featuring Pamela Anderson’s image on the facade. Craig J.
