ENLIGHTENMENT IS ON MY MIND. LOVE IS IN MY HEART.

As a Kindergarten teacher at North Valley Christian Academy, it is my job to keep students excited about the process of learning and teach them to be lifelong learners. I am both a parent and teacher, and my experience and training tell me one thing loud and clear: children learn best while they play, and active learning is key to differentiated instruction. Our teaching philosophy and progressive learning tools allow students to discover letters, numbers, colors and language in a way that also teaches socialization, imagination, values® and joy. These methods combined with the Core Knowledge curriculum enable students to fully engage in each subject and reach their full potential in Kindergarten and beyond.

I love teaching insightful lessons in: reading, writing, language arts, math, science, technology, social studies, art, music, and physical education. I’m Laila Raether, and I’m building Christian Leaders prepared to thrive in Life, Work and Service. SEPTEMBER 2010

eptember is an exciting month. Summer is coming to an end and we can collectively

take a sigh of relief and look forward to eight or nine months of temperate conditions. With the more desirable weather comes many of our migrating friends, who have escaped the extreme heat of the summer. We welcome those back who have been away and look forward to reacquainting them with their Sonoran lifestyle.

We are thrilled to include the Arts Council of the North Valley Cultural Calendar 2010-2011 in the September issue. Our region is thriving with cultural events that are entertaining, enlightening, and enriching the lives of performers, artists, and audiences. I implore everyone to choose an event early in the season and attend. I guarantee you will not be disappointed and you will have the remainder of the season to continue your cultural journey.

September is a month of change, and this month ImagesAZ Magazine made changes to the logo, masthead, and layout. After nine years, it was time for a new look, and one that I am excited to launch. I hope that our readers like the updates to the magazine’s appearance, but we realize it is what is on the inside that counts. random connection. Whether it was a random connection, or fate at work, two educators-to-be came together to share a life full of love and learning.

Randy and Alison met in the parking lot of the school that they both attended, Grand Canyon University, in the fall of 1994. Randy spotted her walking across the parking lot wearing a “University of Iowa” shirt. Randy, having just moved from his home state of Iowa, hurried and parked his truck so that he could catch up and meet with the girl in the Iowa shirt. They started talking, one thing led to another, and the rest, as they say, is history. It turns out that Alison’s friend had given her the shirt ...her friend was from Randy’s hometown, and in fact, grew up surrounded by his aunts and uncles. The couple feels very fortunate to have met each other!

Alison was born in Scottsdale and grew up in Tempe. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University. She went on to complete her Masters Degree in Education and School Counseling from Ottawa University. Alison has been working in the field of education for the past fourteen years in both private and public schools. Her career started as a classroom teacher in Scottsdale. She taught fourth and fifth grades, as well as gifted education. She is a certified school counselor and has been a guidance counselor at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in both Arizona and Louisiana.

Alison continues her work in the field of education as the North Valley Supervisor for Arion Care Solutions. She also teaches at Arizona State University (since 2003) in the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education. She teaches Social Studies Methods and Instruction and Management to pre-service teachers at ASU West and the downtown campus, as well as a graduate course Social Studies Methods course at her alma mater, Grand Canyon University. Alison is also teaching Social studies methods at NAU –Prescott campus in the spring. She is a board member of the Arizona Council for the Social Studies and is a strong advocate for advancing social studies in the schools.

Randy is a Social Studies teacher and a boys’ basketball coach for fourteen years. Currently, he is teaching Advanced Placement U.S. History and U.S./AZ History at Boulder Creek High School. He also serves as the head boys’ basketball coach, leading the Jags during the 2009-2010 season to their first state championship in basketball. Prior to coming to Boulder Creek, Randy coached at Cactus Shadows High School, Horizon High School, and Northwestern State University, a Division I university in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

During the off-season, Randy runs basketball clinics through No Boundaries Basketball Academy (www.noboundariesacademy.com). This fall he is running his skills development clinics at the Anthem Community Center on Saturdays from 11AM to 2PM starting in mid-September.

Randy and Alison have two children, seven-yearold Josh, and twenty-two-month-old, Dallas. Josh attends Diamond Canyon School and likes golf, art, basketball, and superheroes. Dallas likes basketball, balls of any kind, Elmo, Winnie the Pooh, and wrestling his brother.

Even with their age difference, the boys play together very well. Mom, Alison, explains, “They love to dress

!

up in superhero costumes and run around the house.

Come out and support the Jags!

Josh takes piano lessons. Dallas is obsessed with basketball and shoots hoops much of the day.”

The last family vacation was spent on a tour of national monuments and historical sites such as Graceland, Monticello (Thomas Jefferson’s home), Gettysburg, the National Archives, and finally, the capitol in Washington D.C. They also spent a week in Iowa. The trip was made in honor of Randy’s parents’ fortieth wedding anniversary. A wonderful time was had by all.

When the Walker family steps out to eat, they enjoy going to the Shanghai Club, Streets of New York, Piñata Nuevo, and Quiznos. Alison explained, “We want to support the local business in Anthem. We also frequent Chili’s on Carefree Highway, and Logan’s and Red Robin at Norterra.”

The Walker Family wishes all of their Anthem friends and neighbors a wonderful school year, and encourages everyone to “come out and support the Jags!”

VIOLENCE PREVENTION THROUGH CHARACTER It’s often said that when tragedy strikes, a person’s true colors are displayed in response to the hardship. If this is true, then several of Boulder Creek’s students don’t solely shine black and red, but silver and gold as well. ALEXA MARKEY WINS PRESTIGIOUS PREP SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

18

It is never too early to begin thinking about the direction of one’s life and education, and Alexa Markey is one excellent example in Anthem. Her attention to her studies, worthwhile extra-curricular activities, and her determination has won her a place in the Freshman Class of the nation’s (and possibly the world’s) most prestigious boarding school, Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut.

Diamond Canyon School, but Alexa and her mom, Sonia, remember her common-sense advice and counsel fondly as a great source of support and help.

While Alexa maintained an outstanding grade point

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), Student Council, Yearbook Committee, Band and Jazz Band, and Girl Scouts – in fact, Alexa plans on continuing with the Girl Scouts and has set her sights on earning her “Ten-Year Pin.” She has been on the Principal’s List and the Honor Roll numerous times throughout her years at Gavilan Peak, received the President’s Award, and is a member of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youths. With an accomplished daughter such as Alexa, it is no wonder why her father, Richard Markey instantly saw her in the same position as the young student from Choate that he met on a plane ride from Connecticut in 2009. The young woman told him that she was on break from school and visiting her family. “She described her school and all of the wonderful things about it. She really encouraged us to look into it,” recalled Richard. Of course, once Alexa did look into it, she fell in love. The private, college-preparatory school, founded in 1890, has a stellar reputation for both academics and the extra-curricular activities it offers to students. They offer 240 courses, contemporary service requirements in addition to more traditional requirements, honors classes in all disciplines, Advanced Placement preparation in twenty-seven areas, and opportunities for trimester immersion and summer programs in China, France, Spain, and Italy.

As one might imagine, Alexa already has her sights set on new goals. She is looking forward to taking Spanish classes at Choate Rosemary Hall in order to better communicate with her mother’s side of the family. They are originally from Ecuador and primarily speak Spanish. Alexa also plans to take a term abroad in Spain her Junior year. Looking a bit further into the future, she is planning on attending New York University (NYU) and Harvard Law School. Ultimately, she would love to be a lawyer. Leaving Anthem is bittersweet, though. Her parents will “miss her tremendously” but are extremely proud. Mom, Sonia, shares, “Both her father and I are extremely proud of her. We have always felt that there isn’t anything she can’t accomplish once she sets her mind to it! She has younger siblings who look up to her and wish to follow in her footsteps. We are extremely thankful for technology, as we can communicate by webcam and texts.” Alexa’s father jokes, “With Alexa’s continued success, I am already planning my early retirement with a beachfront condo and a 1968 Dodge Hemi convertible!” “I will miss my friends and family here in Anthem,” admitted Alexa. This bright Anthem star will be home multiple times each year, though, during the holidays and spring and summer break – and when she is, Anthem will be a bit brighter. We have no doubt that she will continue to make Anthem proud, and that she will accomplish

The admissions representatives at Choate Rosemary Hall loved Alexa as much as she loved the school. She decided to apply for the ICAHN Scholarship Program, and that decision paid off. While the average award for a Choate student who boards is about

The Jaguars have the date they go up against Mountain Ridge again this year circled on their calendars as the most important showdown of the regular season. As Devyn Weber put it, “If we want to win region and receive a solid seed in the state tournament, beating Mountain Ridge is a must.” Boulder Creek’s schedule is favorable to their success with the majority of their games being at home. On the 25th of August, the Jaguars held their “black vs. red” scrimmage for the varsity team, and some top tier J.V. players. The younger girls got some good in-game experience and toughness. Dear Anthem Attorney, My family is in a financial crisis. We are considering filing bankruptcy. We are about 4 months behind on our mortgage payment. We took out a second mortgage back when we had equity in the home. I know I could get caught up on paying my first mortgage if I could get rid of my second mortgage payment. If I file bankruptcy will it eliminate this debt? Our other option is to walk away from our home. How long can we live in it without paying a mortgage? What are some of the implications I should consider if we do this? Sincerely, Anthem Resident 42104 N. Venture Cour t Suite C-110 Anthem, Arizona 85086

Wolfpack

cheerleaders range in age from 5 to 13 years old. This year, the Wolfpack has more than forty girls on six different cheering squads. Each squad cheers for a different football team. Wolfpack will begin sign-ups for next season starting in early spring. They hope to grow the program to give other girls the chance to share in this experience. If this sounds like fun for a young girl in your household, there is still a way to experience some of the action this season! All students K-6 are invited to participate in the 2010 Jr. Jags Cheerleading Clinic, which will be held on Saturday, October 23rd, from 9:00 to 11:00AM in the Mini Gymnasium at Boulder Creek High School. An additional rehearsal is scheduled for Wednesday, October 27th from 6:00 to 7:00PM. The price is $30 and includes three hours of cheer, dance, motion, and jump instruction, along with a tee shirt and admission to the home JV game on Thursday, October 28, 2010 To further cement the connection between Wolfpack and Boulder Creek High School Spiritline, the Wolfpack BCHS Spiritline uniforms, and they will

THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY STEPS UP, TO GET BCHS ON THE RIGHT TRACK‌. On the week of August 2, 2010, the National Honor Society (NHS) prepared, ran, and participated in the Jump Back Registration Days at Boulder Creek High School. During Jump Back Days, BCHS students walk through the school to register for the upcoming school year. NHS volunteers participated in the planning for registration. Members created posters to aid in directing the expected crowds to each station and provide information about the station. Other members helped design the layout, including setting up tables and forming lines with barriers. On the actual days of registration, August 4th, 5th and 6th, NHS members were on hand to help execute their plan. Members worked mainly as line directors, bookstore helpers, and concessions cashiers. At the end of the three days of registration, over 170 donors signed up to partake in the blood drive on October 7th, 2010, hosted by NHS. Understandably, The View Hotel is the most popular place to stay in Monument Valley, so it pays to book there way in advance. The only other hotel with some views is the famous Goulding’s, which is a few miles west of the park on the Utah side. The accommodations include a motel (The Lodge), separate cottages, and a large RV campground. Most rooms offer good views. The only other lodging options are in the town of Kayenta, about 25 miles from the Tribal Park; Holiday Inn, Best Western, and Hampton Inn.

DINING Your best dining options are at the hotels; otherwise, it’s the fast food facilities in Kayenta.

BLESSED WITH A HIGH CONCENTRATION OF ARTISTS AND ART ENTHUSIASTS, THE NORTH VALLEY IS A CULTURALLY RICH ENVIRONMENT THAT PROVIDES INSPIRATION AND ENTERTAINMENT FOR RESIDENTS OF ALL AGES.

The much-anticipated 2010-2011 North Valley Arts Season promises to be better than ever! It features a dynamic showcase of the diverse talents in the community as well as exciting concerts by performers that are known nationally and internationally. Expect to see perennial favorites as well as innovative programming, expanded events and new venues. Fewer productions will be held this year at Boulder Creek High School Performing Arts Center in Anthem due to less availability for non-school groups. The need for a dedicated center for performing and visual arts in the North Valley has now become critical as groups search for creative solutions to address their need for performance space. Two new venues in use this season are the FCF Holland Community Center off Carefree Highway in North Scottsdale and the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) performing arts theatre at the corner of Tatum and Mayo Boulevards, just off the 101 in Phoenix. Both opened in the spring of 2010. The Arts Council of the North Valley’s (ACNV) Cultural Calendar is available in this publication and provides a complete listing of the Season by genre, and a map of venue locations. Simply tear it out and keep it as a handy reference. An online calendar is also available at www.ACNV.org, which includes details and updates, and there is a place to sign up for a monthly e-newsletter. ACNV president Doug Clark explained, “We operate like a ‘chamber of commerce’ for the arts. In our Anthem area, there s a big need for water softeners, says Matt, who prides himself on the company s customer service. With the high level of hard water in Arizona, pipes often become corroded and can burst. No one ever wants to come home to six inches of water in their home. Another item in Anthem - Pressure Regulator Valves says Matt. We re seeing a great need

The valves help regulate the pressure of water, thus eliminating the potential for weakened pipes to burst and cause flooding, he says. However, while maneuvering the speeding vehicle away from the cliff, he hit a tree stump; two tires blew out and all three people were ejected from the ATV. Tracy and her grandfather were knocked unconscious. Luckily, Nick was not hurt too badly and was able to run for help. Both Al and Tracy were taken by helicopter to J.C.
