GLOBALIZATION IS ON MY MIND. COMPASSION IS IN MY HEART.
PHOTOGRAPH BY AMY PIETTE
At North Valley Christian Academy, I’m achieving global and ecological awareness – right here in Phoenix, Arizona. Through advanced technology communications and school partnership programs, I am engaging with students all the way from the Eastern United States to South America!* Together, we’re addressing the global issues of illegal drugs and their effects on our world. This dynamic opportunity is rich in culture and progressive learning techniques. It affords me the ability to exchange, debate and learn with students and educators from around the world. It offers insightful perspectives and will inspire me to think beyond my own backyard – for years to come. My mind is open. I’m ready to become a conscientious local and global citizen.

s the holiday season approaches, many of us begin to make arrangements
to visit family or prepare to have them come and visit us. It can be a stressful time, but if you are fortunate enough to have family with you during this festive season, count your blessings and enjoy every loving moment with them. History tells us that those who have served our country have protected our freedoms, including the holidays that we enjoy today. A military family is expected to deal with the unexpected, and this family does it with courage, grace, and grateful hearts.

a place that he used to visit when he was a child, so he went over and took a chance that they would have an opening. Laura, fresh out of stylist school, cut Chris’s hair. In the coming weeks, she cut ....and cut ...and cut his hair. Chris kept coming back, even though he clearly did not need a haircut yet. Chris admits, “I told my brother, ‘That’s my next girlfriend ...I may even marry her.’” The day after one of those frequent haircuts, Chris stopped into the shop. “I was afraid that he had come back to complain about the job that I did,” recounts Laura. Instead, Chris had finally worked up the courage to ask her out on a date.
Exactly a year after the pair met, Chris left for his second tour in Iraq. Along with the usual worries and emotions, there was an unexpected drama just hours before Chris was set to get on the plane; he received a call that his father had passed away. He came home for his father’s funeral, and then embarked on his fifteen-month tour in Iraq.
During Chris’s last tour an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) went off in his face, leaving him with multiple wounds including a blown-out eardrum, back injuries, and a concussion. Chris is quick to dispel any “misconception” that he is a hero. He explains, “I made it home while others did not; I was scared at times when others were not; when I gave up hope others were there to let me lean on them. I am not a hero ...those soldiers who never came home are heroes. I cannot be compared to them, because I pale in comparison to those soldiers. I never did anything that another soldier wouldn’t have done for me. I am just an American who loves his country and knows that freedom must be defended.”

Every day we wake up and make choices. Choices that affect our health, well being and happiness. For several years, I made bad choices...I overate, stopped exercising, stopped being happy...not with my family or my husband, but with me. Each day I woke up and said, “Today I’m going to start exercising again and am going to eat right” and the day would go by and nothing changed. Finally, I was fed up with the way I looked and the way I felt, so I called SWEAT. I realized that doing it alone was no longer an option for me...it was not working. This choice proved to be not only a smart choice but in my case a life saving choice. After 6 weeks at SWEAT and a renewed respect for my health and well-being, my amazing husband of 9 years and father of our 3 year old daughter and 1 year old son was tragically killed in a plane crash. Within 24 hours of his death, I made one of the most important choices I have ever made. I made the choice NOT to quit SWEAT and the weight loss challenge I had only been in a week but rather to embrace SWEAT even further and show our kids that giving up would not help me through this tragedy, it would not bring their father back, it would not make me a better person or mother. I was blessed with a husband who had loved life, lived it to the fullest, and loved it with a passion, and the only way to honor him and teach our kids about who he was would be to get back in shape so I can show them every adventure life has to offer the way we had always planned.
feel so passionately about how SWEAT has changed my life and how important exercise is for each and every person. If I could only bottle euphoric feeling I get during and after an amazing SWEAT workout and share it with everyone who is struggling in their life. That’s one of my goals as I embark on this next chapter of my life.
After almost a year at SWEAT I have learned that by taking the time for me each day I am better in every aspect of my life. It has helped me grieve the loss of my best friend, it has helped me become strong inside and out, it has become family to me. Now, I have made another new choice in my life. I have left my executive level position with a private destination club to become a personal trainer at SWEAT. I
We all make choices each day. We can choose to be active, healthy, and strong, or we can choose to stay stagnant with the same routines that don’t bring us happiness. Coach Jay Kopas wanted to once again thank the Anthem Golf and Country Club members and staff for allowing the teams the opportunity to practice on such a pristine facility, stating, “We would not be the team that we are today if it were not for the use of the Anthem Golf and Country Club. Our players are given the best opportunity to prepare their games for matches and tournaments. We are very grateful for the opportunity.

STUDIOWEST PREMIERS PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES BY WES CHAPMAN StudioWest premiers a collection of sixteen original oil paintings and one bronze sculpture, which were done by deceased Scottsdale artist, Wes Chapman. These paintings, from a private collection, have never been publicly displayed. Chapman, a native of Canada, moved to Scottsdale after a successful advertising career, illustrating for prestigious clients such as Coors, Wrangler, and Seagram’s. He was well-known in his adopted hometown as a singer, guitar player, and all-around “good guy.” His paintings are reminiscent of the old west, featuring cowboys going about their daily work and the heroics of good guys chasing bad guys. His paintings possess a Norman Rockwell-like romanticism, each telling a story that celebrates the early American west. StudioWest has placed Chapman in good company; they are also featuring original oils by Heinie Hartwig and a collection of limited-edition Remington bronze sculptures in the same U"$%",-#R,%#S!9)5# !"#b&''",(#*$#98"-# ;"$.&(#%!,9;<!#>,*.&(#/0c00RH2Dc00aH?#&-.# S&%;,.&(#/0c00RH2Bc00aH5#Special wine and cheese evenings: October 14, 21, November 11, 18 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. ANTHEM SALVATION ARMY EXTENSION NEEDS YOU! Perhaps hearing a request from the Salvation Army for volunteer help in the Anthem area seems like a strange request to you. But it shouldn’t. Hard as it is to imagine, there are families in our area who are living with no water and/ or electricity. Cross of Christ School will be the host venue as the company present two hilarious one act plays by Carol Woods. “Ladies At Lunch” features six active, mature ladies, who meet for lunch each week. Between their arranging of chairs, sharing OTC medications, or discussing mammograms and men, they serve up quite a lunch to their waiter and restaurant manager. “Ladies At Poker” features the same ladies meeting at Suzie’s house to play poker, which they know little about. Suzie’s husband sticks his two-cents-worth in, and the game disintegrates into a sharing of make-up and poker-bridge. ,6B"&2#7-.#&!,2#5"%"`&#2!-A#)."#-%*/#9>L#")6!#)%8#)."#)+),*)5*"#)&#&!"#$%&!"'# Q-''4%,&/#Q"%&".#)%8#7.-'#)%/#6)2&#'"'5".D#$**#H.-6""82#A,**#5"%"`&# ")'#ODaD(DSD# @:KDLYCDK]K:# W% !" -A%"M6-1D%"&

NOVEMBER 12-14 SECOND ANNUAL CAVE CREEK BICYCLE FESTIVAL The Town of Cave Creek is engaged in a monumental effort to preserve pristine Sonoran Desert lands north of the Phoenix metropolitan area. By annexing over 6,000 acres of State Trust Land into the Town, Cave Creek negotiated a plan to preserve over 4,000 acres as permanent open space, which will be used for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and as a buffer against rapid urban expansion. This land must be purchased from the State Land Department. To raise the funds necessary for this critical preservation effort, the Town is hosting a number of special events to showcase the lands being protected, including a 20-mile race/ride along

Renowned artists from states including Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, and New Mexico have been inducted to the ranks; the unifying force is the common concern and commitment to art and the West. From its humble beginnings, the CAA is celebrating its 45th Annual Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) Sale and Exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum this fall. The Men’s Art Council of the Museum is presenting the event, which takes place beginning October 15 with the private sale weekend and is followed by the exhibition, which runs from October 17 to November 21, 2010. This premiere sale and exhibition is a convergence of distinguished artists showcasing art that evokes the sights, sounds, lifestyle, and untamable experience of the American West. It features more than 130 new, never-before-seen works of art created in the past year by the twenty-three active members of CAA, and introduces the two newest members, painter Tim Browning and sculptor Paul Moore. Included are bronze and stone sculptures, oil and water-soluble paintings, and drawings. To Tom, the most important part of any business is customer service. Everybody talks about customer service, but very few people actually listen to their customers. Tom s advice for anyone looking to do better in this area is to under-promise and overprovide. Pleasantly surprised customers will tend to come back if they receive a service of a higher quality than they were expecting. Don t give them what YOU want to give them; give them what THEY want. This idea seems so elementary, and yet it can make the biggest difference in attaining success in business.

baby essentials are always welcome as the Food Bank serves more than 300 families and
individuals each month. In addition to helping needy North Valley families on a daily basis, the FFB administers two additional programs. The CARE CLUB helps people stretch their food dollars each month by offering substantial savings on meat ($15 for a $45 value) and pantry items ($10 for a $40 value). A second program, FOOD PLUS, provides a free food package to pregnant, nursing, and postpartum mothers, children up to six years of age, and seniors. While private donations are a mainstay of the program, FFB also receives substantial help from North Valley businesses, along with philanthropic and service organizations. One of the most popular events is called EMPTY BOWLS and is held each October in honor of World Hunger Day. This year, for its 10th anniversary, the event is sponsored by the Sonoran Arts League, the Town of Carefree, Carefree Resort and Villas, Marjon Ceramics, and Laguna Clay. On Friday, October 22, from 11:00AM until 1:30PM, guests can browse the Carefree Town Center choosing from hundreds of ceramic and glass bowls, which have been crafted by members and friends of the Sonoran Arts League. IT IS NO SECRET THAT STYLE IS OFTEN A REFLECTION OF ECONOMIC CLIMATE AND CULTURAL MORES OF THE TIME. IN FACT, FASHION IS SO INEXTRICABLY TIED TO THE ECONOMY THAT SINCE THE LATE 1920S ECONOMISTS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO WATCH HEMLINES IN AN EFFORT TO PREDICT SHIFTS IN THE STOCK MARKET. THEY DO THIS BECAUSE WHAT WE WEAR SPEAKS VOLUMES ABOUT HOW WE FEEL ABOUT LIFE, AS WELL AS OUR EMOTIONAL AND FINANCIAL SECURITY. THINK BACK TO THE OSTENTATIOUS, BOLD, OVER-THE-TOP FASHION OF THE DECADE OF EXCESS: THE 1980S. SOME HAVE SPECULATED THAT WE ARE NOW SEEING A RETURN OF THE FASHION TRENDS OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION: CONSERVATIVE, CHIC YET UNDERSTATED, UTILITARIAN. A HAUNTED ARIZONA YOU WON’T FORGET! “YOU’RE TRAVELING THROUGH ANOTHER DIMENSION, A DIMENSION NOT ONLY OF SIGHT AND SOUND BUT OF MIND; A JOURNEY INTO A WONDROUS LAND WHOSE BOUNDARIES ARE THAT OF IMAGINATION. THAT’S THE SIGNPOST UP AHEAD — YOUR NEXT STOP, THE TWILIGHT ZONE.” ROD SERLING

Imagine yourself on a dark night in late October. The moon won’t be up for hours. Your Ghoul Guide glides up to your group asking, “Are you prepared?” You are about to embark on your journey “into a wondrous
land whose boundaries are that of imagination,” a journey into myths and legends of the American Southwest. Your Haunted History adventure at Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum is about to begin. From the safe haven of the Gazebo on Pioneer’s Village Green, you and your companions are led to one of eight buildings or houses around the perimeter of the Green. Stay with your guide! The only illumination is candlelight! For the next 90 minutes you will be entering a world usually reserved
only for denizens of the night, a Pioneer Twilight Zone. Many of the
buildings at Pioneer have been moved from their original homes, from
locations in remote areas of Arizona. Many have seen horrible deeds performed and, in some of them, the ghosts of the past still reside. You are about to cross the threshold into this other dimension as your Ghoul Guide escorts you to each of Pioneer’s Haunted Historians, who will relate legendary stories of Southwest disasters, murders, hangings, and lost loves.

4 small baking pumpkins (such as hooligan or sugar pie), acorn squash, or sweet dumpling squash 2 teaspoons sugar kosher salt
FOR THE SOUP: 3 tablespoons unsalted butter ½ small onion, chopped kosher salt 2 sprigs thyme 1 medium butternut or kuri squash (about 2 pounds), peeled, and cut into 1-inch pieces 1 teaspoon sugar 3 tablespoons heavy cream freshly ground pepper
DIRECTIONS: Make the bowls. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Use a paring knife to cut a large circle around the stem of each pumpkin (make a zigzag cut, if desired). -,.(/,'01,'234'564'7+((8'(90'01,'7,,47'564'*:,;7<' save the seeds and discard the rest. Sprinkle the inside of each with ½ teaspoon each sugar and salt. Place the pumpkins and lids on a baking sheet; roast until tender, 20 to 35 minutes, depending on their size.
Meanwhile, make the soup: Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add the chopped onion and 1 teaspoon salt. Strip the thyme leaves into the pot, increase the heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally until the onion is soft, about 5 minutes. Add the squash and sugar and cook, stirring, until glazed, 3 to 4 minutes. Add 5 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, until the squash is tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Working in batches, transfer the soup to a blender, crack the lid to let steam escape and puree until smooth; return to the saucepan. Stir in the heavy cream. Season with salt and pepper, and top as desired.
