14 Hats: The ultimate fashion accessory

I’m honoured, to be recognised as a designer. My designs are featured on the cover as well as a 3 pages spread of HATalk magazine. I am also in the final 20 in talent house competition design a hat for the queen’s diamond jubilee. I’M: What, or who inspired you to become a hat maker?

From the Editor Claude Bélanger

E “I have always loved design and fashion from a very early age, and in particular I have always loved having my own unique style! ” Janice Charles.

nter the world of hat designer Janice Charles. Based in Liverpool U.K , Janice designs hats under her own label, House of Charles. Learn more about Janice’s work, how she started, what inspire her design. I’M: Janice, did you always wanted to be a hat maker? What did you do prior to this? No, I didn’t always wanted to be a hat designer/ millinery, my background is varied design wise but my main focus

www.imimagemagazine.com

was on Architecture and interior design, this is where I saw my future. In 2010 I entered a hat design competition called who wants to be a “milli-naire”. I was placed in the final 12 out of 250. On this competition I beat milliners who had studied and trained for 6 years to get to the final. As a result my design was put up for sale in London UK’s John Lewis’s flagship store. I was shocked when it actually sold at this very high end store, this gave me the confidence to pursue Hat design/millinery as a career.

I have always loved design and fashion from a very early age, and in particular I have always loved having my own unique style! I think it was something I was born with! I never played with my dolls as a child, I just designed and made clothes for them, as the years went by, I found my creativity broadening, from cake decorating, fashion design which I have a city guilds in. I later went on to study a BETEC HND 3-dimensional design, which i passed with flying colours and used this foundation to go on to become an Architect and an interior designer. I have worked professionally in both of these fields.

I’M Image Magazine August 2012

My journey into Millinery/hat design was purely accidental, as I had to take time out from my working life due to ill health! It wasn’t too long before I became bored, then, one day, I came across some materials left over from my design course, which I had previously used to make furniture for my scale models. As I looked at some fabric and wire, strangely I saw

www.imimagemagazine.com

these items through new eyes and though I could make a hat out of them, but at this time it was purely thought. I didn’t know how I would actually turn idea into reality.

wore this hat to the races and was surprised that everyone was asking me where I got my hat from? People told me I should enter the best hat competition as I would win!

One year later I was invited to go to the races with some friends and couldn’t find a hat I liked, so I decided to buy a plain black hat and customise it, thinking nothing of it. I

A few days later I decided to pull out the fabric and wire and tried to turn my visualisation of turning these materials into a hat work. Continue on page 18

18 “I hope to convert the non-hat wearers and make them see how a hat makes you not only feel good, but look good ”

I showed these hats to my partner, who asked me where I had ordered them from? I told him I had made them; he told me I could sell them! I laughed and said who would buy them? My partner told me to put them on eBay to test the market! I was surprised that over 700 people looked at them and they sold within 3 days. I’M: Where did you learn your craft? I have no formal training. I am totally self-taught! I feel my design background has given me the ability to turn my hand to anything design related and also to think outside the box! I’M: What inspires you the most? My inspiration is all around me it can be anything from a shape, or sometimes it is the fabric that informs my designs. I also feel my architectural

18

www.imimagemagazine.com

background has a strong influence in my designs. It is not a conscious decision, it just happens! I’M: Would you say that you have your own style? Can you describe it? Yes I would definitely say I have my own style. I create unique sculptural designs that are created to make a statement! I’M: What do you hope to accomplish with your design? I hope to convert the nonhat wearers and make them see how a hat makes you not only feel good, but look good. I’M: Do you consider your work as an art form? Yes I see my designs as wearable sculpture. I’M:What are your views/ opinions on fashion ? I love the last few seasons of fashion, its going back

to the Hollywood glamour era's which I love. I’M: How do you see hat as a fashion accessory and why should people wear headwear? I definitely see headwear as the number one accessory, it changes an outfit completely a hat can be used to dress an outfit up or down, a hat can make you feel good about yourself including covering up a bad hair day turning it into a chic day! 50’s Look by

SHANNON The 1950’s heralded the revival of femininity and glamour for women’s fashion and makeup. The icon who is the most synonymous for this ultra feminine bombshell look was, of course, Marilyn Monroe. However, looking alluring was not just for Hollywood stars. Continue on page 54 50

50’s Look by

SHANNON

It was post WWII, and women were now returning home from working in the factories. It’s not hard to see why they were anxious to replace their uniforms, head scarfs, and minimalistic makeup with sweat-heart necklines, perfectly quaffed hair, and a flawless face. Looking seductive and lady-like was not just a form of therapy for these women. It was also a way to attract a man seeing as the female to male ratio was quite high due to the war. The trend for makeup was to enhance all of your features simultaneously to their maximum womanly capacity. Their eyebrows were perfectly manicured

54

www.imimagemagazine.com

and filled in with a dramatic arch. They brought drama to their eyes by elongating them with black liquid liner across their top lashes.

What makes this look so timeless, and fashionable to this day is that it relies on your own natural female beauty.

By flicking the liner up at the outer corner they would create a cat-like appearance to their eyes. They wore thick foundations that gave them gorgeous, flawless complexions and then topped that off with bright corals

and roses for a healthy flush of colour on their cheeks. Last, but not least, they completed their make-up with a very lush, pouty lip. Lots of bright colours were popular for lipstick including various shades of pinks, corals, and oranges. However, the most popular and memorable, being red. What makes this look so timeless, and fashionable to this day is that it relies on your own natural female beauty. You can wear it by replicating it exactly, or you can take certain elements for less drama. Also, by playing with different textures and colours you can add a modern twist to this classic look. Ana Text by Ana Pauna

‘‘Entering Scorpio’’ In the beginning, I was weak. Like many models starting their career, I was shy, uncertain and naïve. All I knew was that I was somehow on the right path; since posing in front of the camera offered me some sort of catharsis. A year has passed, and I grew into the person I am now: a strong and professional model. Virgil once said ‘‘Audaces fortuna iuvat – Fortune favors the bold’’ and that is exactly what I aspire to be: bold. I believe that it is my strength: physical, mental and emotional strength that sets me apart from the other models. And through my pictures I wish communicate the perfect balance between masculinity and femininity; the marriage between the warrior and the princess, the beauty of both light and darkness. My name is Ana Pauna, and I am entering Scorpio.
