The beauty of

Autumn Autumn is a beautiful season, marking the transition of summer into winter. Changing colours, falling leaves, lovely breezes, beautiful natural light. It has something magical and gracious to it. We decided to capture it. In this editorial all photos were therefore taken with natural light only. The clothing in the editorial came from collections of several designers. Young and new –graduation-talents like Florine van Rees and Lotte Mostert but also upcoming designers like Uzuri Couture. Last named designer has recently won a price -the dutch MAFB award- with her latest collection. Sano Wahyudi, very talented and experienced fashion stylist, took care of the styling and additional clothing pieces in the fashion spread. He was assisted by young fashion stylist Jenna Bergen. Often Autumn is seen as one of the least popular seasons because we love the atmosphere at the holidays during winter time and like spring for introducing our favourite season: Summer. However, Autumn is just as special too. So sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty of Autumn through my lense. Remon van den Kommer, Fashion photographer.

shooting seriously for the past 12 years. I’m: Did you start as a photographer or as a digital artist? I have been an artist since I was a kid. I went to college and studied art and graphic design. I had worked as a graphic designer since 1994. I had strong illustrative skills and a knack for Photoshop to sit and figure out retouch and composite solutions. I guess this gave

the times from multiple directions, sources and intensities. I try to recreate that sense in my lighting setups. I think it adds more dimension, death and drama to the final image. I’m: You have your own style, can you describe it? Hyper photo-illustrative! I like to take things a bit over the top with the model and scene styling but the retouch technique is where I boost the high-

I’m: Do you see yourself more as a photographer or a digital artist?

A photographer! While the retouch and Photoshop work is a part of my work it is more about finishing the image. I try to get as much accomplished in camera as possible. I’m: How long you have been creating images?

Photographically I’ve had a camera of some sort since I was about 14, well before digital. I was a creative person from the get go in my life though. I was always drawing, sketching and painting. Creating images is something that has been part of my life in some form or another since I can remember. More specifically to photography though, I have been creating images and

light and shadow contrasts selectively which in the end produces the illustrative look. Not so much my style, just my take on the popular dodge and little mixes pinup, fashion, horror etc. There is a lot of imagery I’ve absorbed in my life, studying art history, watching movies, etc. I’ve been lucky to have some talented designers and makeup artist I’M Image Magazine November 2012

anyone can do it. Well anyone can be a painter too so their point is moot. It’s a medium for personal expression not just documentation. I’m: What are your views/ opinions on photography in 2012?

wanting to collaborate on my shoots bringing and adding their unique touches as well. I like to hit up antique shops and look for old unique props to build a shot around. Good example would be the image of Kari lighting up a cigarette with a blow torch. I found the torch in a shop for $10 and gave Kari a call to come over and we just played around with it. Inspiration is all around. I just access what is available to me at the moment and as Tim Gunn would say. “make it work”.

From an art stand point I follow many of the principals a painter or sculptor would in terms of light.

The technology is allowing individuals to advance the creativity and sophistication of images at a very fast rate. Digital works form me as an artist and creator. If cameras were still only film based I would be doing this anyway. I’m: As a professional what would you say it takes to become a professional “image creator” Tough question! I make my living shooting product in-house for a company. I transitioned from a graphic designer

I’m: Do you consider your work as an art form? Yes I do. From an art stand point you still follow many of the principals a painter or sculptor would in terms of light, composition and form. I’ve had discussion with individuals saying photography isn’t art. That www.imimagemagazine.com

to product shooter about 5 years ago. I think it is tough for someone to make a living creating images like I do without the help of some luck, an artist rep and maybe having a style that come into vogue. My safe reliable job as a product shooter gives me the luxury to pick and choose freelance shooting projects and to work on my own personal ideas in my free time. This takes a lot of time and practice. My work is in constant evolution and refinement. If I haven’t shot anything new I will go back to older shoots and pull other images and work on my retouch. Like a pro athlete you have to live and breathe what you do 24/7 to become successful. I’ve worked hard to create my style and techniques. Each year I get more opportunities and recognition. My goal is to shoot the content and editorial for magazines. I like shooting people and creating stories. So when I get to that point, I’ll consider myself a professional “image creator”. serious injury. The passing of a parent. Ostracized for being different. Discontinuing education. Any of these would be enough to stunt the growth – let alone creativity – of an individual. Still there are those who excel where others falter; who turn their weakness into strength, death into life, pain into art, suffering into sewing. This is precisely what Montreal designer Daian Tang has done.

Despite her small stature she also played basketball and proved an adept point guard. However, post knee injury she entered a period of self-reflection since physical activity was her livelihood. She then tookup sewing, and it would be wonderfully easy to say “the rest is history”. But her life still contained unforeseen obstacles. Daian’s mother tragically passed away after being struck by a car.

Having lost her dream, her mother, and working in a call center, depression set-in. Daian cloistered herself at home and Daian hails from Regina, sewed. Whenever she Saskatchewan. learned that they only offered what she had already taken as part of her high school curriculum. She then decided to move to Montreal in the hopes of completing her studies at LaSalle Collage. She never acquired a degree, but rather dove into Montreal’s fashion industry by tweaking clothing for the mass market that is women’s wear. Daian quickly grew tired of meeting the industry’s requirements, and focused solely on her own designs. Daian finds motivation in being able to experience life and all of its offerings. After eating sushi for the first time she created a sushi-printed dress. Because of the care she puts into her work the execution time for each varies. That being said she has no issue meeting deadlines. She has only ever recreated a piece once as per special request by a woman pleading in a parking lot after one of her fashion shows. Daian justified the recreation as a form of sharing what she loved, and found that in recreating there is the opportunity for improvement.

Besides clothing-design, Daian has her own line of makeup bags, implementing her trademark hand-painted technique. Although never having planned for children, Daian is a proud mom who derives much support & encouragement from her daughter Khoko. She will be present at this year’s December designer sale organized by D.Y.D.H. Productions, where mother Daian will be launching her Spring 2013 “Under the Sea” collection. Price point is affordable, though for specific figures contact her directly. From paper carrier, cashier, waitress, cook, even donut-dipper, to production coordinator and self-made designer, Daian’s propensity for knowledge and selfimprovement is inspiring. Whether participating in a non-profit fashion event or collaborating with musicians on videos, she continuously exudes positivity & gratitude, and is an absolute delight to work with. Daian’s advice to other self-starters is to never doubt yourself and show the world what you see. For more on this fashionable fighter, visit iconsetter.wix. com/daian-tang1. Naiia walks the streets of Montreal looking for street fashion trends and style ideas.

A Blue meant for Royalty

Bright blues + nude hues make for a killer combo when you’ve got Eliza’s fiery hair and spirit.

Match fall patterns with loud mono-colored pieces to make your outfit pop, like Katie.

Showcase your royal blues on your shoes like Kim here, coupled with a tribal teal skirt and mustard sweater.

Astrit is rockin’ the royal blue with a pleated skirt, head-scarf, and matching DIY earrings.

A Rose by any other name

The Tamer Side of Wild

Looking fall-fab in the autumn-drab, Laura dawns a rose-patterned Betsey Johnson maxi and red Aldo booties.

From summer’s loud leopard prints to fall’s subtler spots, a neutral pattern like Antonella’s fits the changing season.

Wearing flambéed rose from her head to her toes, Astrit is back and pretty in pink.

Though the season is over, we still had to draw attention to Eti’s jeweled Hamsa flip-flops.

What better way to keep warm than to treat your feet to a fuzzy pair of Converse, like Doris has?
