The SBYC Annual Auction supports our Junior Sailing programs, BAADS and adaptive sailing, along with environmental stewardship and Clean Regattas. Every summer, for 5 weeks, SBYC Junior Sailing trains more than 120 junior sailors. Some are the kids or grandkids of members, but many are local community and broader Bay Area kids. For at least the past 7 years the program has been a huge success with parents clamoring to get their kids into the always sold-out programs. SBYC now uses paid instructors to help scale the program, and in recent years, program graduates have become US Sailing qualified instructors, including two members’ sons and lead instructor Natalie Davidson. Since 1989, the Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors, also known as “BAADS,” has been affiliated with the SBYC, which has a commitment to support community-based sailing activities. SBYC invited BAADS to share its clubhouse facilities, and along with BAADS, SBYC has updated its facilities to assist disabled sailors with adaptive features, proper equipment, and adaptive designs and resources. In cooperation with US SAILING and Sailors for the Sea, SBYC participates in the international Clean Regattas Program. Sailors for the Sea is a nonprofit that educates and empowers boaters to protect and restore our oceans and coastal waters. SBYC is active with direct action and partnerships along the southern SF waterfront, and reports its environmental and community activities to the Port and Board of Supervisors. SBYC and its members engage in environmentally friendly practices and partner with Sea Scavenger Conservancy on local shoreline cleanup.
