ou all know the words to Amazing Grace? ... good. All together now and sing it with feeling. Why you ask? Because for thirty years (come November 1st) we will have had the privilege of berthing our boats in downtown San Francisco, a.k.a. the City, that’s why. Our Club is situated at one of the finest marinas on the west coast, with the freeway exit/entrance right around the corner, light rail transportation at our front door, a super-duper supermarket just down the street, restaurants galore and a multi-

use ball park in our backyard. Ask any realtor; we have the holy trinity, the big three: location, location and location. Let’s face it, we’re spoiled. Anyone who has visited another harbor and stepped off their boat onto a wobbly splintered wood dock and ended up with a Topsider full of salt water knows what I mean. Anyone who has spent a night on their boat wondering if the surge would jerk the cleat off the deck before it broke the dock line knows what I mean. Anyone who has been locked behind the guest dock gate because the Harbor Master office locked up
early knows what I mean. Anyone who has had to wait for a high tide to plow their way out of, or back into their berth knows what I mean. Anyone who has tied up by a sign painted on the dock mentioning a “problematic mosquito and wasp condition” knows what I mean.
Ray Hall – Dancing Bear
Opening day, November 1st, 1986, thirty years ago, South Beach Harbor was a pretty lonesome place. There is a picture in the SBYC History Book taken from the East end of the South breakwater – now the location of our finish line – of four masts sticking up in an otherwise empty marina. The Loma Prieta earthquake was still storing up energy for a 7.1 whopper, and our yacht club was just a gleam in the eye of Carter Strauch, our Harbor Master. Thirty years is a long time to be berthed up in one place: just lucky I guess. Happy Anniversary South Beach, save me a dance.

COMMODORE’S COMEBACK

ECIPROCATION, TAKE ADVANTAGE. During the first week of August I was in Santa Barbara for an event unrelated to my boating life. Nevertheless, I presented myself at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, (yes another SBYC) and thoroughly enjoyed their hospitality. While there I was able to learn a bit of their history, fascinating stuff, i.e. during the winter of 1924 a gale washed the Clubhouse out to sea! Kind of puts our recent air conditioning problem into perspective. Upon my return to the environs of the Bay I began to research some of the numerous Clubs so close to us, I discovered some interesting stuff… St Francis YC – We are all aware of their 50-mile rule, however any member of a legitimate YC can attend their Wednesday Yachting Luncheons with guest speakers, just show up with your SBYC ID and tell them why you are there. Check their website for weekly topics… Corinthian YC – Was formed
M I LT S M I T H
back in 1886 when the SFYC Mosquito Fleet members decided they needed more attention for small boat racing… Oakland YC - During the first year, 1914, they were evicted from their Clubhouse so a committee was formed to find and build on a new location, which they did at a cost of $250,000… San Francisco YC – moved to their current location in Belvedere in 1934 having been in San Francisco since 1869, the oldest yacht club on the Pacific coast. Those members not wanting to move across the Bay formed the St. Francis Yacht Club. Bay View Boat Club – In 2013 our neighbor was listed, along with the Olympic Club, Villa Taverna and the Union Pacific Club, as one of 10 cool places in SF you’ll never get into… Aeolian YC – Founded in 1906, their first event was a clambake. Initiation was five dollars, one dollar per month dues or $10 per year if paid in advance. By-the-way Aeolian
definition…arising from the action of the wind. Richmond YC – Founded in the mid 1930’s, a great racing history and noted for their invention of the El Toro sailing dinghy in 1941, named for legendary “bull sessions” at the Club. So, I encourage you to visit other clubs when you travel* but don’t forget to check some of our local flavors**, can be quite fun, as demonstrated by our Cruise Outs! *Check with Mr. D for a letter of introduction and acquire a burgee to exchange at the more remote clubs. ** Find N. CA clubs by checking out the PICYA Yachting Yearbook published by our very own Patti Mangan at Imagine That.

VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT
T
his has been an amazing year as your Vice Commodore. Seems like I just got started and now I am trying to figure out how to best transition the role to the 2017 Vice. First, I am very proud of being part of the team that installed, tested and launched the POS SYSTEM. Working with Cat Reining, Roger Ladwig, Terence Hanrahan and many others, we got the job done. Secondly, we strengthened the club committees. House Maintenance Committee Chair, Richard Forst is such a steady hand. I learned much from Richard and fondly remember how he reached out to me when he was Commodore. Richard and the committee members truly understand what our club needs. Events Committee: Wow what can I say. This year Susie Fay and Toni Heyneker stepped up, took on the role and my job got instantly easier. They are truly great at what they do.
PA U L J A N O F S K Y
Our many committee members worked on our events and brought some really fun days to the Club. Hospitality: this committee is the most shall we say...FUN. Working with Steve Severaid I learned a lot. They test and select liquor and wine selections and help review the margins. This committee has a tough job, but someone needs to do it! It has been a special relationship working with the HOOD and Deck Captain. Collaborating with Cat Reining has been a pleasure. She and I supported each other and challenged each other along the way. Dick Haiduck is so very strong in his lead role of our DC’s and is also a strong sounding board for me. The role our OOD’S and DC’s provide is truly a key to what makes us such a welcoming Yacht Club.
I cannot forget the other folks that make up the team. Chef John and crew work hard each week and put great food on the table. MR. D works very hard to keep all the other gears in working order. Commodore Milt Smith and RC Dan Courter have been very supportive and great guys, I have enjoyed working with them both. Well as you can see I have had a lot of support doing my job. Thank you all! We have great events coming up! The Annual Auction, "Puttin' on the Ritz" Saturday, November 12, the HolidayInstallation Dinner and last but not least, the New Years Eve party! Let’s make the rest of 2016 rock! As I always say, If you're an active member then it's your Club, we hope to see you back in here soon!

ell, how ‘bout them Giants? What pairs perfectly with post season baseball? One tall cold draught, of course! Maybe two? Our pricing can’t be beat and the selection will please all palates; IPA, Pilsner, Wheat, Stout, etc. The outdoor grill provides the finishing touches so BYO burgers and dogs for the quintessential Fall evenings. Not to jump the gun but prepare for a new brew option when the Hospitality Committee introduces the holiday ale. The specifics will be revealed closer to the holiday season and is sure to be a pleaser.
If you have a “wish list” or suggestion for the Hospitality Committee to potentially be included in our stock, please let me know so it can be evaluated. There are no guarantees but we welcome recommendations for consideration. I tip my hat to the OODs that served on race nights last season. Many of whom took on multiple shifts to support the Race calendar. It is a grueling shift and many get burned out so bravo to the brave and generous volunteers for contributing to and supporting another successful race season! Cheers & splice the mainbrace ya’ll!

SBYC JUNIOR SAILING W E N DY H A N R A H A N
Our Jr. Sailing program has been very popular over the years thanks to Kevin Wilkinson and the support team. In fact it's been too popular! The Summer camps are always sold out. The kids enjoy it so much and are quite disappointed that such a good thing comes to an end. We can all relate.
But this year is different! We are extending the experience for dedicated and excited graduates. We have launched a year round Jr. sailing and racing program. Our first session began September 17th and finished November 12th. We are busy planning to resume and recruit in early Spring 2017 Lets start with some background for taking on this challenging endeavor. This past Summer SBYC had a first! A few of our SBYC Jr. Sailors raced in the BAYS Regatta Summer Series. At Encinal YC junior racer Taytum Wymer came in 3rd in the RS Tera division. At Half Moon Bay, Finnagh and Enya Hanrahan came in 1st and 2nd respectively in the RS Tera division! Racing against San Francisco YC, St. Francis YC, Half Moon Bay YC, Encinal YC, and the Peninsula Youth SF.
One of the required items desperately needed to continue participation in future regattas is a trailer to transport multiple RS Teras and Lasers to clubs around the Bay Area. As it is, we are limited to transporting only five boats to any event. We have nine RS Teras and two Lasers that kids can race on but are limited to five because of the one trailer. With our two year plan, by 2018 we will add several high school teams training and racing out of SBYC. The boats that the high schools race with are typically FJ's. We only have one leaking FJ. We need more. We are starting small - recruiting two local high schools.
So why is SBYC doing this? Our goal is to have year round youth sailing. To make sailing accessible to SF public school students. What we noticed this past year is that the kids competing from other yacht clubs, the high school sailing teams from St. Francis YC and Golden Gate YC, are private school kids with very few minorities represented. San Francisco is surrounded by water. We want and we need to make sailing accessible with no regard to race nor social status for young people. Will you help us reach this goal?! If you have a trailer or an FJ to donate, time to coach and spot, ideas for fundraising, extra sailing gear for youth, a connection at the high school level, etc., we implore you to reach out and connect!

SAILING LEADERSHIP
SPOTLIGHT...
JANELLE VAN RENSSELAER & GERARD SHERIDAN Janelle and Gerard have been indispensable this year to our racing program as well as the overall spirit around the club. Together, they have recruited new members, built and trained a race committee with more talent and numbers than ever before. As Race Chair, Gerard put together the greatest FNS, with the most participation and enthusiasm than we’ve seen before, he also chaired the Bay Bridge Regatta and the 15 FN races. Janelle has been the Executive for the race committee, only a few of her tasks have been assigning race chairs, working budgets, directing advertising, etc. She has had a hand in everything, and we couldn’t run as successful a race year without her.

SBYC Celebrates 1000 Members At the September Members Meeting champagne flowed as we celebrated after installing our 1000th member. Congratulations and thank you for your dedication, commitment, volunteerism and spirit, and participating in making SBYC the best club on the Bay. Cheers! AUSTIN WALLACE Austin saw how much fun his partner, Scott Hauser, was having and decided to join as well, thus converting their membership to Family. Whereas Scott is a racer, Austin loves pleasure sailing on the Bay and enjoys being rail meat from time to time, and is great at cleaning the boat after a sail. He is already a Deck Captain and looks forward to contributing much more to SBYC.
He has coached and taught sailing and is a licensed yacht and ship broker. His goal is to help more adults and youth to get involved in sailing, and to recruit youth to crew. One of his sponsors said: “I am a much better sailor because of what I’ve learned from Bill”. Bill came in first place overall on his boat Highlighter in the Spinnaker 135 division in our FNS.
Bill is a returning member, after taking time off to raise a family. He has fond memories of the double wide. And was the cofather of our original junior sailing program. He was a 15 year youth member of JPYC on Lake Michigan, cruising, racing, fishing and rowing. He’s been 25 years sailing the Bay, primarily racing his Islander 36 Highlighter in our FNS, Saturday series, and Jazz Cup. He has crewed in the BBS and has skippered Islander 36 one design.
family with active participation in the Corpus Christi YC. He’s been sailing since he was two; a single handed Sunfish across his home bay before he was 10; skippered his family’s 42’ sloop across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico at 16; raced Hobie Cats through high school; and worked a fore deck in his twenties when he lived in New Zealand. He’s been involved in our FNS and wants to continue sailing with his crew, and explore the Bay. “Any day on the water is a great day”.
BILL HACKEL
TREY GUINN grew up in a boating
NICO POPP Nico grew up windsurfing in the South of France. But he’s been 15 years avidly sailing our Bay as a member of Club Nautique and Sequoia YC. According to his boat partner “He is one of the most genuinely enthusiastic sailors in the SF sailing and racing scene”. Nico has been very active in our FNS on his shared boat, Dare Dare. And he had hopes to win the Rolex BBS this year (placed 6th in the ORR C division).
Matt has been sailing our Bay since he was a teenager and eventually worked his way up to our FNS on various boats. He now sails with his young family aboard his Tartan 41 Good Omen. He’d like to spend more overnites on the boat, do some coastal cruising, and cruise outs. He looks forward to contributing to our Club philosophy, our friendly atmosphere and relaxed style.
