arry was over at our house for dinner the other night. I met him at the door and I’m all like, “Hey Larry,” (I call him Larry, he calls me Ray) and he’s all like “Hi Ray.” That glib repartee set the mood for the conversation that followed for the rest of the evening. Just Larry and Racer Ray, two of the movers and shakers on the cutting edge of sailboat racing having a mano-a-mano chat-o; me, all congrats, him all que sera, sera. The topic of our little tête-à-tête was mostly eclectic, jumping from sailboat racing, to sailboats, to racing sailboats and back again. From the antipasto to the zabaglione we expressed our personal thoughts about the color of the event T- shirts and our desire for a standard dimension of the AC logo on them. From the borscht to the beef stroganoff we debated the proper number of portable potties per event. We both had strong philosophical differences on this point and argued the various merits from port to starboard and from bow to stern; like two heavyweights slugging it out. Neither one pulling any punches, neither willing to give an inch, neither one willing to throw in the bar towel. Then he dropped a conversational bombshell. “Oh, by the way, I was re-reading my copy of your best-selling book SURFING THE WAVELENGTH as
I often do, and came upon your April 1992 article entitled “The Future”, page 47, in which you predicted the America’s Cup races being held in San Francisco Bay; you were 20 years ahead of your time. Amazing! What’s more, I read some of your thoughtful and well written articles suggesting the use of the Catalina 30’s as the challenge vessel for the America’s Cup. Now that is a brilliant idea. After all, to paraphrase Mark Twain, it’s not the size of the boat in the race, it’s the size of the race… er… you know, the fight in the… dog.” It’s hard to argue with logic like that, so I simply nodded, acknowledging his humbling praise. But all good things must come to and end, and with our arms thrown
fraternally over each other’s shoulders, we walked out to his classic 1959 Fiat Abarth Zagato sports coupe. And as he drove off I recalled the FIAT company motto: Often in error, but never in doubt!

hat can I do for an encore? If you missed the September member’s meeting (and you might have done so even if you were there), the business portion of the meeting was brief - to say the least. It consisted of a request for a motion for adjournment, a motion for adjournment, a second, an approval, and an adjournment — that was it! Julian Guthrie, author of “The Billionaire and the Mechanic”, assisted by Norbert Bajurin, “the Mechanic” and Commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club, gave a captivating presentation about Larry Ellison’s quest for the America’s Cup the subject of Julian’s book. After the presentation and Q & A’s, they both graciously signed a slew of books for John Bertrand presents Bill Adams and I with a signed Boxing Kangaroo flag. The flag was developed the members present. by John’s team for their ‘83 Cup Challenge. It has since become the symbol of all Australian sports.

Chef John’s creative dinner entree included radiatore pasta in honor of Norbert, the “radiator repairman”. Norbert is really a trooper. He was feeling poorly, and asked if the program could precede the business portion of the member’s meeting. I agreed, figuring I could run the business meeting while people quietly stood in line for signed books. I figured wrong! The ensuing discussions amongst members rose to such a pitch and level of enthusiasm that
convening a meeting was just not going to happen. Quickly realizing my error in judgment, I opted for a world’s record briefest meeting rather than risk the world’s record briefest tenure as Commodore.... And the encore? Well, I’ve presided over a number of SBYC Member’s meetings, but I have never before received so many compliments for holding such a great meeting! Yes, many of the compliments were directed at the “The Billionaire” presentation, but sadly, many more were re-
ferring to the “business meeting”. So, considering extreme brevity is what made that portion of the meeting “great” - what can I do for an encore? I think I’ll punt, leave the country, and let Bill Adams run the next meeting.... only one regret. I did not remind members of the upcoming Annual Auction November 2nd. ctober brings us a wonderful evening of music and barbecue at the Club with the band “Bleu” – Gil Cadilli and Virgil Thrasher are the musicians. Recently recognized for their performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival, they have a long history with vintage blues and gospel. Greg and Cathy Sherwood are your hosts. They are bringing a special recipe for Tri-tip barbecue, and will work with Chef Doug on the grill to create a memorable feast including the tri-tip, chicken and sausages with ranch beans, potato salad and dessert. Wendy Hanrahan will be hosting “Pancakes and Pumpkins” on Sunday the 27th and will give children of all ages a chance to carve a pumpkin. here is a well-known columnist for this fine publication (wild horses could not drag the initials RH from my keyboard on to this page) who clearly does not have enough to do. This person, whose real identity I will protect by calling him Racer X, has a strangely warped mind that ferments totally obscure topics into wildly entertaining ramblings, month after month—and he’s done so for 25 years. His column makes other columns, like this one, appear to have been written by third grade dropouts. Not only that, but when I told the illustrious editor of the Wavelength that I promised to be the first to get my column to her this month, she smugly told me that Racer X usually gets his next column to her within 30 minutes of her publishing each edition. Thirty minutes! That’s just not right. And it’s humiliating too! I have written a very nice note to Racer X’s charming young wife Natasha (not her real name) asking her to please give Racer X many more chores around the house because he obviously needs more activities to occupy his wandering mind. While we lesser scribes are still busy admiring our own columns in the latest Wavelength (well, isn’t that what every contributor reads first?), Racer X is trolling for brownie points from the Editor by submitting his next brilliantly weird concoction. No wonder he gets the front page treatment…
So if you see Racer X around the club, please tell him to dumb it down a bit out of compassion (assuming he has any) for other columnists. And you might hint that I’m on close personal terms with the HOOD who I can easily persuade to give Racer X some really nasty OOD shifts if he doesn’t clean up his act. Just sayin’… Behind the bar Our new red wine lineup is now complete with the recent addition of Bogle Petite Syrah to go alongside Lapis Luna “Moon Eyes” Cabernet and Poizin Zinfandel. REAR COMMODORE REPORT Preparing for winter racing:
While searching for some data to share with you for preparing for winter sailing on the San Francisco Bay I found this 1956 article from Sports Illustrated. I think it is as relevant now as it was 57 years ago! Here are the first two paragraphs. “It is Questionable whether San Francisco Bay sailing is a sport or a masochistic exercise. Furthermore, it is hard to say which season, summer or winter, is the more rugged. Bay winds blow from 12 to 25 mph on the average, and races have consistently been held in winds up to 35 mph. Summer has this slight advantage: the winds are westerly and predictable, always coming in strongly through the Golden Gate. In the winter they come from everywhere. Winter temperatures are slightly lower, but it is doubtful if the chillier air can match, for pure discomfort, the wringing-wet summer fogs which blanket the bay through all but midday. In short, the bay is as choppy, unfriendly and unpredictable a body of water as ever faced a yachtsman. Yet San Francisco sailors love it. In fact, there is little anyone can do to keep them off the bay. It’s known as the place where yachtsmen sail longer, harder and with more hard work than anywhere else. Bay sailors don’t haul their boats: they just elevate them briefly in the spring for a little washing down and repair work. Winter on the bay is a series of continuous frostbite regattas. The word frostbite was invented to describe the winter dinghy races in which a few hardy Yankee souls compete, but winter sailing is a thing San Franciscans do as a matter of course in every class of boat available.” Read the entire article here. With more tacks, more lead changes and more days sailed, the 34th America’s Cup has also demonstrated what a great place we have to play. As for the cruisers and power boaters; same thing, think of the numerous destinations, great marinas and yacht clubs you can visit. I say, keep that boat moving for the next 6 months and have a great Fall and Winter on the water.

Boat Name: Esprit do Liberte Club Interests: Candidate Biography: America’s Cup, Fleet Captain, OOD & Race Committee Bill has been a member of SBYC since 2009. He has been sailing for more than 40 years, enjoying One Design racing, Ocean Racing, cruising in the Pacific Northwest San Juan Islands, the Delta and bareboat chartering in the Caribbean. He currently has a Crealock 42’ sailboat in South Beach Harbor. Bill is Vice Commodore of SBYC, an active member of the race committee; an Anabel skipper; an OOD; on the AC34 Committee; and was small boat fleet captain during 2012. He is on the Board of Directors and is Treasurer of “Advocates for South Beach Harbor.” Since 1987 he is a member of the St. Francis Yacht Club, where he has also been a regular volunteer on their race committee. He attended the University of Oregon, graduating with degrees in Rhetoric and Public Address, Psychology and a Masters degree in Communication Theory. He is currently a yacht salesman in the Bay Area. His business career as a sales and marketing executive covered all aspects of transportation equipment sales and leasing. He is eager to use his planning and organizational skills together with his enthusiastic attitude to make the Club activities an enjoyable experience for all of its members.

Boat Name: After You Club Interests: Candidate Biography: SBYC Vice Commodore, 2012, OOD and Hospitality Committee Steve is excited to be considered for Commodore in 2014. He served as SBYC Vice Commodore in 2012 and has been an active member of the club. His 6-year-old daughter Suri can often be found twirling through the club. Steve is a boater and has a Searay Sundancer slipped in South Beach harbor, which he enjoys as often as possible. Steve has commuted between two homes for the past ten years, working in San Francisco and raising two older children in Southern California where he had lived most of his life. Finally both children are successfully off to college ending the need for split time. Steve and Nazy recently leased their home in SoCal, sold their condo and purchased a home in San Francisco consolidating their lives into a single home. With this major change, freeing up much of Steve’s time, he realized it was time to invest his energy into this club where his family intends to be part of for many years. Steve understands the balance of the club. Keeping it casual, friendly and intimate while still looking for smart opportunities to enhance the experience for all the members. Not forgetting about all the folks who have formed the clubs identity, living up to our commitment to support disabled sailors and junior sailing as well as providing experiences newer members have been asking for. There is so much to be accomplished over the next year. Steve’s experience of owning and managing the largest company of its kind on the west coast uniquely qualifies him to achieve success. Steve will work closely with each officer as well as the board to effect meaningful and lasting change for the club. Dock space, parking, on the water activities, integrating and getting the most of the 2014 BAADS World Regatta, the future of food service, as well as better administration, management, including setting and achieving expectations for both volunteers, employees and contractors as well as technology. The club has had an incredible 25 years all due to the efforts of the members. Steve hopes to kick off the next 25 by encouraging the 60% of membership who are not active to become more involved by providing a welcoming atmosphere, great events and fresh spirit.

Boat Name: Grand Lady Club Interests: Port Captain, OOD, Hospitality Committee Candidate Biography: Barrie Wheeler has been an avid boater all of his life, joining the Merchant Navy at the age of 15!! As a hobby, he started sailing 20 years ago and for the past nine years has owned a powerboat named Grand Lady on A dock in the South Beach harbor. Barrie and his wife Karen volunteer and participate in many of the events that take place both in the club and on the water. He enjoys cruising and annually organizes the cruise-out to the Corinthian Yacht Club. As SBYC Port Captain for the past three years, Barrie has hosted many of the other yacht clubs in the SF bay area. In this position he has worked closely with the past three Vice Commodores, the HOOD and Chef John Additionally he has worked in the wine industry for 25 years, and has used this experience to help select the SBYC house wines each year. Barrie is running for Vice Commodore because he feels he can contribute to the operation of the club and will enable a smooth transition from this year to next. Barrie is a retired account manager, and has the time to devote to this important office of the club.

Boat Name: N/A Club Interests: Sailing, Hospitality Committee, OOD Candidate Biography Toni has served as a Director on the Board and as the Head of the Events Committee for two years. She has also served three years as a member of the SBYC Hospitality Committee and has been an active OOD for many years. She spends a lot of time at the club and has started a Saturday Night Game night with a group of fellow members and friends. Toni is interested in continuing her service on the Board, and has decided to run for the Vice Commodore position. She worked closely with Steve Severaid when he was Vice Commodore in 2012 and believes as a team they can contribute to the leadership and enjoyment of the club. She enjoys the current group of members having become friends with many of the newest to join as well as remaining friends with many of the members who have been part of the club for the longest. Boat Name: Tupelo Honey Club Interests: Current SBYC Board Member, Membership Controller, and Racing Candidate Biography: Gerard Sheridan is a North Beach resident and originally from Ireland. He served on the Membership Committee for two years, the last as head of membership in 2008. More recently he’s served as a board director for 2013. As part of that role he’s part of a team of Officers, fellow Directors and other dedicated volunteers who care deeply about the club and our members enjoyment of it. He’s also a member of St Francis Yacht Club and earns a crust as VP of Sales for a telecoms software company selling to the wireless carriers of North America. An avid racer, he races his Elan 40, Tupelo Honey in the Friday Night Series and at various other IRC and PHRF regattas on the Bay. A two-time winner of his class in the Rolex Big Boat Series (06’ & 09’) and winner of the 2013 Aldo Alessio Perpetual Trophy Regatta and the 2013 Phyllis Kleinman Swiftsure Regatta. I’m seeking your vote and support for the position of Rear Commodore where I hope to continue the fine work of my predecessors and continue to move us forward in our water based activities, facilities and assets.
Roger Ladwig Member since 1999 Boat Name: HIgh Flight Club Interests: Staff Commodore, ERMC, Finance Committee Candidate Biography: I joined SBYC in 1999. Since that time I have been Rear Commodore (2009), Vice Commodore (2002, 2003), Commodore (2004), Director (2005, 2006), and Chairman of the Board (2007). I am also currently on the Finance Committee and serve as Co-Chair of the Executive Race Management Committee. I’ve been on the club Building Committee as well as Race Committee. In short, I have seen the club operations from many different perspectives, and believe I can provide continuity from our current Treasurer, Pete Hamm, and offer valuable direction for the future. My guiding philosophy is that as officers, we should always provide maximum benefit for the club members. Our stakeholders are you. You contribute to be a part of this, and activities and investments should be focused on your enjoyment and use of our club’s resources. Boat Name: Grinnin’ Bear Club Interests: OOD Candidate Biography: I’ve lived in the area my whole life, went to local schools (Hillsdale High, CSM, Cal, SF State), got a teaching credential and I’ve been a high school science (and occasionally, math) teacher for the last couple of decades. I like the work, I just wish there was a bit less of it. Leading kids through genuine challenges can be exhausting, but it’s always satisfying. I’ve also been elected staff leader of one of our “Small Learning Communities” at school, a post I held until I was appointed Teacher Coach for that SLC. I’ve been a master teacher three times, and served twice as union representative for our school and member of the union’s executive board for the district. In those capacities, I’ve come to realize that the two most important factors in the success of any group are getting folks to work together and following up on tasks and inquiries! I learned to sail in El Toros as a kid and Pop had a 24’ Del Rey at Pete’s Harbor in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. He sold that while my brother and I were in college and Dad and I got back into sailing in 1998 when we got a boat at Coyote Point. When we found out about South Beach Harbor, we moved the boat up here as soon as we could. We ran into Richard Smith and Martin Fay who said “Hey, ya gotta come over to the three trailers at the end of the “Pier 40 shed” and we’ve been members ever since. I’m the race skipper of the Cat 30 Grinnin’ Bear and have been an OOD for (I think) about five years. I’m pretty good at fixing and making things, having built innumerable model airplanes, having restored or built six cars and a motorcycle, competing in SCCA sports car races for about a dozen years as well as, of course, wrenching on Grinnin’ Bear. I’ve also had a couple of couple of articles published in motor magazines.
LYNN MAGNET Member since 2006 Boat Name:: Island Time Club Interests: OOD, Cruising, Racing Candidate Biography: Lynn Magnet has been a member of South Beach Yacht Club since 2006. She has been a strong volunteer becoming an OOD shortly after becoming a member and continuing to date. She also serves on our membership committee. She has been happy to help out at club events when an extra volunteer is needed. You might have seen her busing trays or judging at the pumpkin-carving contest for the kids. Lynn participates in on the water activities as well. She has been to several cruise outs, and has crewed for the Friday night race series and the Jazz cup. Lynn grew up sailing in New England but took an avid interest in the sport when she moved to the Bay Area in 1979. She has raced in the bay over many years and has cruised a variety of places. Currently, Lynn is a sailing instructor at Club Nautique. She has a US SAILING certification as a cruising instructor and holds a 50-ton coast guard license. Lynn also is a psychotherapist who works in the department of psychiatry at Kaiser. She specializes in anxiety disorders. Lynn is very interested in keeping the club an active and fun place. She believes in the volunteer ethic of the club and would like to keep and strengthen that ethic. She recognizes that leadership must include “buy in” from the members and will work hard to make that happen.

LYNDA MAYBRUCK Member since 1999
Boat Name: Chance Club Interests: Race Committee, Deck Captain, AC34 Committee, Membership Committee, OOD, Volunteer Coordinator Candidate Biography: Lynda Maybruck is a native Californian having grown up learning to sail an El Toro at age five around Big Geiger Cove on Catalina Island. As an adult, she found Southern California sailing boring and she and Alan moved to the Bay Area for “wind”. On a good year, she sails about 100 days a year out of Brisbane Marina on their S2 11.0m “Chance”. As an SBYC member since 1999, Lynda has participated in Race Committee; a three year veteran Deck Captain, and currently Deck Captain coordinator; three years on the SBYC AC34 Committee; associate representative at AC34 BAYCA committee meetings; two years, and currently, aboard the Membership Committee; and an OOD. Although not a member of the Membership Committee in 2009-2010, Lynda assisted the committee in creating recruitment campaigns for SBYC and conducted screening and interview sessions with prospective/recruited members. During this timeframe 60 new memberships were installed into SBYC. In 2013, Lynda took on the task of Volunteer Coordinator and has successfully recruited members to participate in club activities who typically would not volunteer. She also created a program to recognize and reward volunteers on an individual basis who have provided outstanding “over the top” support and contribution. As a successful business owner for 15 years, given the opportunity, Lynda is anxious to apply her leadership skills to developing a dynamic committee that will create programs to involve more members, generate better communication connections with members, and develop a stronger volunteer program.
KATHLEEEN DUNN Member since 2010
Boat Name: Sea Queen Club Interests: Deck Captain, Cruise Out Director Candidate Biography: Kathleen Dunn has been a member of SBYC for over three years. She has been trained as a Deck Captain and served as the Cruise Out Director for 2013. She always dreamed of owning her own boat and currently owns and captains a motor yacht, The Sea Queen. Kathleen grew up learning how to pilot ski boats, houseboats and small hobie cats. For many years she worked as a Pediatric Critical Care nurse and managed the PICU at UCSF Medical Center. Kathleen is currently retired and recently spent three months cruising across the US and visiting National Parks with a good friend in her land yacht (RV). She lives in Walnut Creek and enjoys hiking and biking in the East Bay parks. “I have applied for the position of SBYC Secretary because I want to increase my contribution to the club. As an administrative manager, I have many years experience leading committees. This involved setting agendas, documenting comments and then sending out summaries and minutes. I believe I have the skills and teamwork necessary to be successful and contribute to the leadership of our club.
