I

t was the year when a gallon of gas cost 89 cents, the Chicago Bears won Super Bowl XX and Lindsay Lohan was born. You’re right, it was 1986! Not much else happened that year except for the activity down by Pier 40. There were a bunch of barges with cranes and pile drivers down there pushing and pulling, shoving and dredging - doing something. Some people thought they were drilling for oil, some said it’s going to be a new on-ramp to the bridge and some just didn’t know what to make of it. The only reason I knew that they were building a small boat harbor was because I was on the INTERESTED list.

Back in 1982 I had received a survey letter asking“ … to express your interest in relocating your boat to the new marina to be built at Pier 40…”

So, with a ten year waitlist at every other harbor on the bay, and living on the peninsula with the San Mateo Bridge, Nimitz Freeway traffic and

the Oakland A’s mob scenes between us and our boat in Alameda - yes, we were very interested. It wasn’t long before we started getting newsletters from the Redevelopment Agency updating the construction progress “… also allowing for the mandatory 12 week dredging shutdown during the herring spawning season…” and other such tidbits.

From time to time I sailed by the China Basin area and checked it out. Located in what used to be the bee-hive of San Francisco’s shipping activity, with trains and boxcars and forklifts and trucks crisscrossing in all directions, you took your life in your hands trying to get to the other side of the street. It was now one of the loneliest parts of town, where you seldom saw anyone, maybe a car now and then if the drivers were lost and looking for Pier 39. The breakwaters were in and they looked solid. Other than that it was a lot of old wood piling sticking out of the water. In fact

it was only the 3,280 seagulls and the 135 year old schooner DOLPH REMPP sitting on the dock of the bay overlooking the work that gave the shambles a nautical hint of things to come. In April of 1986 it looked like the new harbor was actually going to happen, but they still had a lot of work to do. Make that an awful lot of work to do.

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

W

e finalized the budget in March, got the new POS up and running as well and for the past few weeks SBYC has been full on into the 2016 season. Launching with our Easter Brunch we have been in “Full tilt Boogie.” We’ve been at the boat show, held committee orientations, trained skippers, trained OODs and Deck Captains, had parties and presentations, got the Friday Night Racing underway and cruise outs organized. It is a long list, and most importantly the Club has been open regular hours for your enjoyment… all this due to hundreds of hours of volunteer time given by our dedicated and skilled members. For me, that is inspiration; we have a great Club.

There are other great clubs on the Bay. At the invitation of CYC Commodore Tim Ballard, Carolyn and

I represented SBYC at their Tiburon Opening Day blessing and breakfast.

The weather was perfect for the 8 am ceremony on their deck, just the right mix of ceremony, humor and camaraderie, followed by a delicious breakfast with a short program… nicely done.

We left CYC heading for SBYC for our Opening Day Oyster Festo…said it before, saying it again, what a great day! Bob Mason and his crew outdid themselves. We had a big crowd including numerous newer members.

Anabel was decked out in all her finery thanks to Wendy Hanrahan and her talented crew. SBYC was represented well - placing 3rd in the Annual PICYA Boat Parade.

A few other observations while at the Club: On the 15th I did my first gig as OOD since 2014, it was a race night…from 5:30 until 11:30 my iPhone recorded 4,311 steps taken,

A Catalina 30 recently retired from 30 plus years of SBYC racing has now been fitted out with flower vases, carpet and a new bedroom ensemble. Boat name rhymes with prancing hare.

SBYC’rs travel a lot, I have recently spoken to people on their way to or from Florida, New England, western Europe, eastern Europe, Africa, even Antarctica…nothing on the whereabouts of our SBYC yellow buoy however. Over the last few years it has been to the Marin Headlands and Angel Island, last week it was spotted just west of the Saint Francis YC, now resting safely at pier 40.

Keep having good times at SBYC, that is what it is meant for.

H

ard to believe that as I write this article I have already served for five months as your Vice Commodore.

On the job training.....

Yep! That is what I am experiencing. At times the job has been frustrating but overall it is rewarding.

I was 17 when I bought my first boat, a 16ft runabout. We had so much fun; I was hooked on boating for life. Sure nice to be sharing that love for boats with all our members.

Our new POS system was a major project; now with the system in place we are moving forward. Our OOD's and Deck Captains and back office are all trained. We have had small issues crop up but for the most part the new system is doing just fine and has been well received.

Annual Oyster Festo was a fantastic sellout thanks to Bob Mason and the loyal oyster cracking crew.

And many thanks to the lovely Susie Fay and Lynn Heilberger who hosted a spectacular Mothers Day Brunch!

ear ye’, hear ye’, the bar is open and ramping up for the warmer drinking season by way of selecting a new Rose to extend the chilled wine options. The Hospitality Committee met and taste tested four different varieties. The winner by near consensus (one voter abstained) is the Alexander Valley Vineyards dry Rose of Sangiovese. Why not try it out and see if you agree? Sounds like a perfect activity–sitting on the deck on a warm sunny afternoon and sipping some Rose, eh?? (shout-out to former HOOD).

I continue to receive requests for a replacement Sauvignon Blanc and I promise I hear each and every one; in fact the Hospitality Committee executed another taste test consisting

of six labels. They all failed to exceed the existing Fume Blanc from Ferrari Curano – Honest Abe! The search continues, is a high priority and will be reported just as soon as one meets the high standards of our club.

In the meantime, lesson for the day…. Fume Blanc is in fact the same grape as Sauvignon Blanc, a creative marketing scheme by the late, great Robert Mondavi. You can thank me later for the education (and of course look it up).

The Friday Night Race season begun with a bang – rather a bust due to a race cancellation. The crowds on race night are challenging enough when staggered but when 150 people arrive at the same time it causes incredible pressure on our talented OOD crew.

Remember to thank your OODs, they serve without pay and often appreciation. Take the time to recognize the role they play in making sure you have an enjoyable time but also look out for your safety while “passing time” in our clubhouse.

I close with a nod to the winning team for their “Udderly Delicious” concoction this year during the Annual Appreciation Lunch.

It is wonderful being part of an allvolunteer club and I want to thank the many people that pitch in each week to make everything happen, especially our on-water activities.

It is true on every occasion, that nothing would get done without them. Such is the case on every race day, when nearly 20 members of the Race Committee descend on the Club hours before the race to prepare flags, sounds, race documents, Anabel, the RIB and a growing number of marks and ground tackle.

Those of us that race show up hours later, race, return, eat and often head for home before the final members of the Race Committee are finished with their work.

I hope you all, especially the racers, appreciate their efforts. If you see them dragging in, damp and tired, please offer them your seat and give them your thanks. Special thanks this month to our mark-set crews who work like Sherpas, often well after dark, to set and take down our courses; Dave Corbin, Lloyd Yu, Linda Ratterman and many others that join them each week.

Another example of volunteers in action, was the Versa Dock work party in early April. On a dreary, wet day, seven hearty souls unloaded the materials on the pier 40, carried it all down the ramp, repaired the damaged blocks and made the ramp three feet wider and longer, adding fenders and cleats in the process.

We did have a bit of a learning curve, made the worse because yours truly left the instructions at home! I'm happy to report nobody fell off of the slippery dock, though we all ended the day as wet as if we

had. I hope the before and after photos will help you appreciate everyone's hard work. Thanks go to our volunteers, Dave Corbin, Lloyd Yu, Chris McMahon, Andrew Lorenzen, John de Castro and David Trollope.

And who could forget our PICYA Opening Day on the Bay volunteers, who decked out Anabel in flags and signs honoring our heroes from our armed forces, police and fire, all on board for the parade.

We finished 3rd in the judging.

Thanks to Wendy Hanrahan, Kim Kyllo and Bob Semple for organizing and decorating, and to Enya and Finnagh for the handpainted signs. Well done everyone!

Lastly, I would like to recognize the volunteers who are working on our "volunteer initiative." That may sound a bit strange, but volunteers

don't organize themselves.

We are working on a number of fronts to engage our new members to get them involved on the water, train skilled positions, and try to find an appropriate online tracking and scheduling tool to make scheduling for events much easier.

Members, by now you have received your monthly statements.

You'll notice under the Clubessential System, the statements are looking a little different.

We start with the open balance, and then list all activity for the past month showing where it was entered (OOD or DC – Deck Captain station) and what was purchased by category (beer, wine, food, member dinner, etc.).

You will notice after the statement there are sheets that show copies of all of your charge transactions in detail.

This is much more info than was previously provided and should make it easier for you to identify and correct any issues that may have occurred during the previous month.

If you do see a discrepancy on your bill send an email to Gloria or to myself identifying the ticket # and the problem perceived and we will take care of it for you. We believe we have gotten the current and past due amounts shown on the bottom of the statement corrected for all.

Because this is a new system we are ironing out some bugs and learning. There may be some hiccups during the first couple months but we will try to correct them as soon as we find them.

So please be patient and let us work through the nuances.

Remember, our bookkeeper, Gloria, only comes in on Mondays and Thursdays, and we generally process deposit payments on Mondays only, so if you don’t see a payment credited for a week or so, it may be caught in this time gap.

Otherwise, the Club is in a good financial position and close to budget.

Kevin Wilkinson picked up the new RIB–it has plenty of power, rides great.

SBYC COWBOYS LAND AT CYC The Corinthian cruise out was just great.

From the help at the dock crew to the friendliness of the CYC members we met, CYC is certainly worthy of another visit.

We had some new cruisers join us: Cindy and Steve Rowe, Leslie and Eric Walls.

Deb Pharis and Michael Gibson came in on their new boat they brought down from Napa. The BBQ and cowboy outfits and line dancing and great live music made for some tired, stuffed buck-a-roos. Some dressed in their finest western gear, others not so much. – Alan Maybruck

AN AUCTION EXPERIENCE

W

hy should you attend the Annual Auction? Because it’s incredibly fun, and there are a lot of inspired active experiences to bid on, and when you win, the Club wins.

For example, previously Elissa and Tom Rogers were the winning bidders on a "San Diego Experience" consisting of a night in an ocean view suite at the Blue Sea Beach Hotel on Pacific Beach arranged by Patti Mangan, and a day on San Diego Bay on members Gini & Stan O’Hoppe’s 27’ powerboat with lunch and drinks provided.

The Blue Sea Beach Hotel is a charming place with a most helpful staff, a pool & spa, and a primo

location - right on the Pacific Beach Walkway, with the Mission Bay Walkway just across Mission Blvd.

The beach in front of the hotel is inviting, and there are lots of beachfront restaurants within easy walking distance. If you’re looking for a place to stay in San Diego, put Blue Sea on your short list.

The O’Hoppe’s were most gracious hosts, popping a bottle of champagne before embarking on a tour of gorgeous San Diego Bay. There was no chance for hunger or thirst with the spread of food and libations provided, ranging from salami and cheese croissants to caprese skewers with home-grown basil accompanied by a delicious La Crema Chardonnay.

The "Three Hour Tour" passed by the carrier Midway, the tall ships of the Maritime Museum, and the San Diego Yacht Club, to name a few of the highlights.

The only thing missing was a hair-raising trip across a “slot” which the San Diego Bay doesn’t seem to possess.

Following the tour, the crew enjoyed music and a glass of wine at the Chula Vista Marina Park and a potluck dinner on the docks with friends of the O'Hoppe's - all in all, a very special day.

The moral of this story is -attend and bid at our Annual Auction, have some fun and help the Club.

MERITORIOUS SERVICE SPIRIT OF SEAMANSHIP

On a very blustery day on the Bay, sixteen all women - crewed sail boats set out in the Red Bra Regatta. Midway through the race a crew member was knocked overboard by a boom. Lochan Ora was not far behind and came to the rescue. Properly equipped to rescue, Lochan Ora's crew quickly got the sailor on board, stabilized, and returned to the safety of South Beach Marina in record time.

Deserving of a nomination for the PICYA Club Meritorious Service Perpetual Trophy? We think so! Anyone else have stories to share?

Although Lochan Ora (Sail 42) had an exceptional crew and lead that day, skipper Marcia Bever didn’t hesitate for a second in making the decision to forfeit the race in order to do the rescue.

Thank you Marcia, for your Spirit of Seamanship!

Cynthia and Lee have been boat owners since 1988—mostly power— and currently own a Bayliner kept in South Beach. However, they love to sail and have sailed the BVI’s. They’ve made several trips to Catalina, and are open to branching out their boating experiences. Lee has a great understanding of volunteer clubs and Cindy is an expert at fundraising and organizing auctions.

JACK LUGLIANI

Jack has sailed various boats including FJs, Lasers, Express 37s. He currently owns a Laser. Jack has been actively involved with our Junior Sailing Program for years and ultimately wants to teach in the program.

For now, he wants to be a member of SBYC on his own.

Beth started sailing sunfish in high school in Maryland.

She started sailing more seriously in Santa Barbara and is now certified thru Spinnaker Sailing in Redwood City.

She was a member of Sequoia YC, and served on their Board. She now lives in SF and is excited to be in our racing series and also serving on Race Committee. She has been a bartender and knows various POS programs.

She is energetic and fun and is looking forward to more volunteering at SBYC. She is a romance novelist about to publish three books, plus a children’s book and an adult coloring book. Be sure to ask HER about her pen name.

NYNA ARMSTRONG

Nyna was looking for a club to join and someone from KKMI suggested us, because we’re FUN! And she’s fun! Her introduction to us was to attend the first Race Committee meeting where she managed to complete her application and get her three sponsors. She works fast!

Nyna is an experienced cruiser having cruised a Lazarra 76 from Maine to Grenada, Alaska to Acapulco, the Great Lakes and Mississippi River. She also owned/sailed a Swan 44 and coastal cruised 5,000+ miles. She is already part of our Race Committee and is hoping to get on a FNS race boat. She currently lives aboard her Carver 466 in Westpoint Marina. She is also an expert web designer and programmer.

LORI O'ROURKE Lori has been around SBYC for many years.

She has weathered all kinds of cruise outs with us, attended more parties, jumped in to help whenever she saw a need, and has spent more hours sitting in the car waiting for Roger to finish up Club business than we could count.

She recently decided it was time to be an official member as she loves being a part of us and wants to party with us cruisers.

WINE TASTING CRUISE OUT 2016?

The installation of a new dock at NVYC brings more opportunities for boat excursions to the Napa Valley. Spanning 180 feet, with six power pedestals, the new dock is capable of providing water and power to 24 boats. Aside from the Main Street dock downtown, the new guest dock installed at the NVYC is an attractive facility for out of town boaters to visit and enjoy the City of Napa.

As the City proceeds with river dredging August 1, the NVYC could not be more excited about offering this new guest dock as a space for boaters to enjoy the club and river!

Founded in 1987, the Napa Valley Yacht Club is a volunteer club offering boating and social events for its members and the greater community. Many boaters and clubs from around the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond enjoy cruising to the NVYC guest dock for special club dinners and events.
