appy 4th of July! Start the day by attending your patriotic parade of choice, then hustle on down to our Club’s July 4th phantasmagorical festive feast of fun-food (anything BBQed) with all the trimmings, followed by the traditional, inspirational and always popular after dark display of multi-colored fog and loud noises (AKA San Francisco fireworks display). Altogether it just makes you proud to be an American by the Bay. I hope I’m wrong about cloud covered pyrotechnics but 4th of July in ‘Frisco has a semi-soggy track record.
and alert parents close by just in case. Finally, with sirens-growling and red lights flashing, the glistening Grass Valley and Nevada City fire trucks came into view. That signaled the end of the parade and the start of the traditional fire hoses water fight. Tension filled the air. The crowd whispered in anticipation. It was clearly understood these two fire departments were arch rivals with no quarter ask or given. The two Ray Hall – Dancing Bear Fire Chiefs stood in the middle of the street glaring at each other, like prize fighters in the ring, as the ground Speaking of soggy, that reminds me of the 4th of July parades I attend- rules were read. I highly recommend marching in a 4th of July parade at least once in your life! Put it on your bucket list. Get a little red wagon, stick a flag on it and the dog in it and you’re all set.

I
n case you considered dropping by the Club on a weeknight and then thought to yourself “the club will be dead... think again! The Club was jumping during the entire month of June! The Club calendar was chock-a-block full of activities each week, with something for everyone. Just check June out: For Adventurous Cruisers — Pete Sorensen’s multi-day Coastal Cruiseout to Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. Only bad news - was you had to come back...! For Laid Back Cruisers — Kathleen Dunn’s sun and wind filled Ballena Bay Cruiseout - complete with a Motown Barbeque and a tour of the local St. George Distillery. For Cruisers That Don’t Like Leaving The Dock — Lorianna Kastrop’s Dock Party the morning after the 25th Anniversary Dinner Party was a highly attended and much loved opportunity to visit fellow Club Member’s private boats, continuing the 25th Celebrations, and making it a great weekend. It had to be great — long time Club members, Willie and Vreni Borner came all the way down from the San Juan Islands for the celebration, and left the Dock Party with big smiles.
For Racers The hotly contested (or not, depends on skipper’s beer rations) Friday Night Series, complete with all you can eat Barbeque post race feast and camadarie. For Visiting Yachtsmen — (and an opportunity for SBYC folks to meet & greet) The Corinthian YC Cruise in, and the Presidio YC luncheon! For Budding Sommeliers — Roland Medel’s “Knights of the Vine” Wine Tasting Event For Intellectuals and Casual Summer Readers — Dina Scholtz’ Book Club Meeting For Supporting AC34— AC34 Course Marshall Training was again held at our beautiful abode! Plus the SFAMA -San Francisco Chapter of the American Marketing Association held a panel seminar devoted to sharing the strategies amongst partners of the AC34 Event. Unbeknownst to all, including yours truly, the guys with the sunglasses and white gloves appeared (again) with a long vintage trunk - containing the America’s Cup and the Louis Vuitton Cup! After a brief period of worship, it disappeared as quietly as it arrived.

And the Grand Event — The festively decorated 25th Anniversary Party with gourmet food, top flight wines and champagne, old time rock ‘n’ roll, 15 past and present staff commodores, and 1177 historic photos! Topped off with the dinner proceeds providing a donation toward BAADS All-Access Regatta coming up this Fall. If you missed any of the events, we can’t undo that, but you can take a few moments now and visit the July calendar, and you’ll see that July has yet another super group of events that you won’t want to miss. VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT

uly begins the “Summer of Racing” in San Francisco with the Louis Vuitton Cup and the 34th America’s Cup bringing members and guests to the Club to watch the races, and invited team members along with the Race Management group visiting the Club to share our hospitality. McCovey Cove will be full of Junior Sailing Campers for 5 weeks beginning on July 8th. The Club will be bursting at the seams with the Friday Night Race Series on the 7th, 21st and the 28th. We are pushing towards the record of race night meals served as Chefs John and Doug dish out their now famous “FNS Barbecue.” Speaking of, the first event of the month is our Annual July 4th BBQ! Our members will be manning the grill with burgers, super dogs, chicken and veggie burgers. Alongside will be buttery corn-on-the-cob, seasonalsalads, sides and juicy watermelon. On Sunday July 7th, Tim Gaughan and the Napa Valley Vintners will be producing another fabulous wine tasting with food pairings to introduce you to several of the fine boutique wineries they represent.

Our next member meeting is on Friday the 12th with a new RSVP system which provides place cards for the first 125 to register, assuring you of a seat, so please register early! Meanwhile Deb Phairas queries “what wine were you drinking in 1998?” She is hosting a Wine Pairing & Sharing on July 25th - don’t miss this sure to be hilarious shindig!
Volunteers are the driving force of our Club. When looking at the lists of volunteers that are recognized each month for their contributions, it becomes apparent that the same enthusiastic members are enjoying the rewards of service each month. Please take this opportunity to begin participating! Have you been hesitant up to this point, or feel like you did more than your share in the past? 2013 is a very busy year and we have a large appetite for volunteers to support not only our regular events but special events as well. Email Lynda Maybruck, our volunteer coordinator, and offer to help with a future event. Train to be a “Deck Captain” and learn about our point-of-sale system, one of the first steps to becoming an “Officer of the Day.” Help decorate the Club for an event, or help host a more inimate member sponsored event. As we look forward to the Fall, there are many family oriented events planned for the holidays that need lots of member support. Plan ahead by offering your time now to make our Club more enjoyable. SPLICE THE MAINBRACE
I
hope that a handful of you finally get around to reading this column (right after you’ve read Racer Ray’s inside front page flight of fancy, the Commodore’s report, and the Vice’s, the Rear’s, AC 34 stuff, BAADS and all the other fascinating reading such as the listing of email addresses). I can pretty much guarantee that you’ve forgotten the history of why my column has been called “Splice the Mainbrace” – me too, I had to look it up. Those who have paid attention to earlier columns (or visited Wikipedia) already know that “Splice the Mainbrace”was an order for one of the most difficult emergency repair jobs aboard a sailing ship, later becaoming a euphemism for authorized celebratory drinking after such, and eventually the name of an order to grant the crew an extra ration of rum or grog. It may still have some relevance in the British Navy where it doubtless started, but not in ours where alcohol has been banned for 100 years come July 1st – bet you didn’t know that, Mr. Racer Ray - ha! While this is certainly not a naval order, it is definitely a very strong encouragement to all our members to “Splice the Mainbrace” on the Fourth of July and enjoy an extra rations of grog or two. Your club thrives on your active participation in these important experiences. While I myself intend to be on a tropical island that day, I wish you all a very Happy Fourth – and drink up!
So, while I have your rapt attention, I want to give another shout-out to the amazing, wonderful, incredible OOD’s in our club, without whom SBYC simply could not and would not exist as the unique place that it is. Ladies and gentlemen of the OOD corps, you totally rock - and I, and all of our members, really appreciate everything that you do! Next time, and every time, you are in the club, please say thank you to these extraordinary volunteers. I am so proud to be one of them. Splice the mainbrace, y’all!

REAR COMMODORE REPORT
S
outh Beach Yacht Club runs a Summer “learn to sail camp” out of South Beach Harbor. The campers learn to sail in small boats in McCovey Cove adjacent to AT&T Park. Once again, our summer sessions were already filled to capacity by March with a wait list for space availabilty. There is more demand from the community than we can provide! Specifically we need additional space allocation for more boats and equipment. The program runs for five one-week sessions beginning July 8th and running thru August 9th. From 9am–4pm Monday through Friday. In 2012, SBYC had about 80 ethnically and economically diverse children, ages 8 – 15, attend the camp sessions; some returning campers with sailing experience and others, who had never boated before. The camper fee is $285 for the week
the dinghy dock shared with BAADS. However, the limited space limits the number of boats available and therefore requires us to turn away many kids each year. Bottomline, if we had more space we could teach more kids from the community to sail.

and scholarships were awarded to children in need. The program pays for four certified instructors and is heavily supported by numerous Club member volunteers. SBYC donated 30% of the monies required to run the camp. The children learn to sail on a variety of boats that are kept on

Our campers learn to sail small boats, water safety, rigging, teamwork, a respect for property, and to make friends outside their socio-economic circle. The first day a camper arrives, they must take the dreaded swim test. They must figure out how to get into a wetsuit and life jacket, and swim 50+ yards in the cold SF bay. This experience creates instant friendships, a wel earned sense of accomplishment and the ability to believe in themselves. BY

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race has announced it will
partner with SBYC to make it the official host of the race fleet when it calls into San Francisco next April as part of its 40,000 miles, eleven month, route around the world, starting from London on September 1, 2013 and returning to London in July 2014. The Clipper Race is unique in that it trains amateurs to take on the world’s most challenging oceans; crew come from all walks of life, are aged 18 to 70 plus, and nearly half are women. This will be the ninth edition of the unique global which was established in 1996 by yachting legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo, non-stop, around the world in 1968-69. Sir Robin Said: “I am really pleased that the SBYC is to be our official host. I know that their members are very keen racers and our crews will enjoy meeting them and enjoying the excellent facilities. It is a good location and we look forward to introducing our international sponsors to the city and the wider Bay area. Plus there’ll be some great sailing opportunities for our partners and their guests.” Bill Adams, VC, says he is looking forward to hosting the Clipper Race: “The fleet is likely to be berthed around Pier 40 and there will be a rota of open boats so that the public and yacht club members can see what life is like aboard an ocean racing yacht. The new third generation Clipper 70 yachts look very exciting. “The race will also make a significant economic impact on the city in terms of the hundreds of crew, officials, sponsors and fans supporting the event. This is the premier amateur sailing event in the world.” — CLIPPER RACE AROUND THE WORLD
IN THE SPIRIT OF LOVE Members Chris and Paul Kaplan graciously bought the rights to name one of our new RS Teras during the SBYC auction last October.
The Kaplan’s intent? To honor their good friends’, Marion & Gregg Armstrong’s son, Brenden, who died suddenly nearly two years ago at the age of 24, while on a cruise in Greece with his family and close friends. At the June member meeting a moving tribute to Brenden was presented to the attendees by the Kaplan’s. Now “Brens Wind” will sail the San Francisco Bay with abandon. “Brenden owned an old orange El Toro and would have loved sailing one of our new Teras with his triplet siblings, Jon and Laura.”

’d like to recap the outstanding 25th Anniversary Party
with an emphasis on recognizing those members and volunteers who made it all happen. The party concept was initiated by Janelle Van Rensselaer, and Eugene Hu of the 25th Anniversary Committee. Janelle and Eugene also gave tons of support throughout, including arranging for the commemorative glasses for the anniversary toast. The Club was spruced up and the past Commodored rehung by Mark Miner and Tom Rogers. Bruce Wicklund cleaned, catalogued and rehung the Burgees, and Barrie Wheeler hung the interior lights. With the room ready, Susie Fay’s experience and entertaining enthusiasm was a key ingredient in transforming the Club into a festive venue for a celebration, assisted by committee members Karen Wheeler and Val Schweyer. That Saturday afternoon, an ad hoc crew consisting of Nancy Ellen, Jayne Williams, Carol Shoaff, Pete Otten, Tad Sheldon, and Rick Cooley all pitched in with the finishing touches. Lynn Heiberger, member chef, planned the menu she and Chef John worked as a team on the preparation and delivery - a major effort! Dorian Cougias generously donated the wine and Mumm Napa Cuvee Prestigue for the night, enabling us to turn over the event proceeds to support the BAADS All-Access Regatta coming up this Fall. Tom Rogers introduced the 15 Staff Commodores in attendance, along with an array of volunteers/ contributors, and proposed a toast to the history of volunteer spirit that is the foundation of SBYC. Milt Smith photographed the night scene while 1,177 SBYC historic photos were streaming on the big screen. The Riptides Rock ‘n’ Roll Band arranged by Ken Ludlum got nearly everyone on their feet, and brought the night to an energetic and nostalgic close. While it took a lot of effort by a lot of people to make this happen, the reward was a truly memorable event.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the South Beach Yacht Club Once in a while someone comes along that we just take for granted because that person makes a task look so easy and is always prepared to do that job. Member Catherine Orr fills that description to a “T” and was our special volunteer recognized at the June member meeting with a signature lapel pin. For nearly 14 years, Catherine continues to be a stalwart member of our Race Committee Friday Night Series, as well as on a variety of other races on the SBYC RC team. From the 30 second countdown to the 10 second count, to hear her sound out “mark”, is a reassuring sound. SBYC recognizes our outstanding member with the most longevity in any SBYC task, the one with total control of the race deck, Catherine Orr.

ALERT: Five outboard motors stolen from BAADS and recovered by SFPD! Imagine. One guy managed to work at removing five motors for several hours without detection. He had driven away with the goods only to get pulled over for a traffic violation and outstanding probation violations. This is our marina that was so easily pillaged in broad daylight. The five stolen outboard motors have been recovered and returned, but you might not be so lucky. Keep an eye out for familiar faces and double back when it just doesn’t feel right!
