THOSE WHO DISRUPT THEIR INDUSTRIES CHANGE CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR, ALTER ECONOMICS AND TRANSFORM LIVES. HEATHER SIMMONS

A

different view BY JUDY MCCUTCHEON

If this isn’t a time of reflection and redirection then, I don’t know what is. This period has caused us to do things we never thought we’d ever had to do. But then again that’s the very nature of uncertainty, isn’t it? Mike Tyson, one of my favourite boxers even though he maddened me with the shortness of his fights said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth, and then like a rat they stop in fear and freeze.” In many ways, we are getting sucker-punched by an invisible opponent, or some would say enemy, one that did not exist 18 or so months ago. But I know that we are resilient, even though, if we listened to our brains, it tells us we are scared helpless little beings. When your brain perceives a threat, it immediately sends your body into a fight, flight, or freeze mode.

Throughout my journey one thing I have found that we consciously omit from our lives is pleasure. I am not talking about sexual pleasure although that is part of it, I am simply talking about the activation of your five senses. We escape from ourselves through our continuous busyness, texting, talking, the constant need to be with others – it’s almost as If we are afraid to be with ourselves, afraid of what the silence will reveal. What I want you to know is that you are enough – you really are. There is no need for you to work harder, do more, or dial it up two notches to get more. And if you have been sitting on the sidelines waiting for approval or frozen in fear, I am letting you know that it is time. It’s time to get serious about your dreams. The

Goodness of Grenada AT SANDALS

Not only has Sandals Resorts International copped the award for World’s Best All Inclusive Company for 27 years in a row, but Sandals Grenada has also won the accolade of Grenada’s Leading Resort since 2014. What makes our company so special? Well we have said it time and again; it’s our people, our team members and the amazing culture that they infuse in our resorts.

Sandals Grenada was always special, and when it launched it featured amenities never seen before, such as the sky pool suites- which as the name suggests houses infinity-edge, ocean-facing swimming pools at the front of penthouse style suites that seem to merge with the sky and ocean.

19

ATTIC | JANUARY 2016

For the first time Grenada was able to offer to the world a luxury all-inclusive concept resort with high food and beverage demands; steady occupancy throughout the year and the steady demand for talent in a wide variety of skillsets required for the operation of the resort. At the time of opening, the late legendary Sir Royston Hopkin, owner and managing director of Spice Island Beach Resort, one of the top luxury resorts on Grenada, said that Sandals' presence in Grenada "is a win-win for us as hoteliers and Grenadians. Sandals is helping all of us. The destination will see more visitors because of Sandals." Indeed immediately as we opened our doors the airlift saw a significant increase with American Airlines announcing new routes to service the Spice Island. Over the past eight years, Sandals has sought to imbue the resort with all the goodness of Grenada, a goodness reflected in the consistently warm personalities encountered at every turn. Many will say this comes naturally, as the Grenadian way- and perhaps they are correct.

Employees are inspired and motivated to deliver quality service with smiles, even behind a mask. The local culture of close-knit Christian communities predisposes team members to a pleasant temperament, which is elevated with Training and Development, an important programme of the Human Resource department of the luxury resort chain, coupled with learning via their internal Sandals Corporate University, internal succession planning, internal awards and rewards programme for outstanding team member performance. Employees are inspired and motivated to deliver quality service with smiles, even behind a mask. For example, the Dive Team of the resort is an online sensation. As scuba diving is included for certified divers, Sandals has its own team of local professional Dive Masters and Instructors, many of whom have come up the ranks and attained these qualifications during their time with Sandals.

Throughout the years, with attractions such as the Underwater Sculpture Park, many wrecks and many comparatively healthy reefs, word has spread about Grenada among the diving community, and this has become a major market segment for returning guests so much so the resort has plans to attain a third boat for the operation. Another department of popular mention is the Butler/ Elite Services department. General Manager, Peter Fraser shared, “Upon opening when we advertised Butler vacancies, we received a handful of applications. Grenadians probably did not understand the role. However now, eight years later it is one of the most sought after roles on resort, as our butlers have made quite the name for themselves.” For Butler Manager, Shannell Findley, who started as a Butler a few months post- opening in 2014, her journey, has been fulfilling;

“I knew of the brand and there was always an inkling of wanting to have an experience with the company. Eight years later I am honoured to be a part of such an exquisite brand that represents family and community. Being Grenadian, I am even more proud to be a part of a team that gives back to my Community and my Country, my Region of the world through our Sandals Foundation.” She added, “My professional experience with the company has taught me commitment, dedication and perseverance reaps success. What an absolute pleasure it is to be part of the essence of Caribbean success.”

With the winning combination of a quality product and good people to deliver it, Sandals Grenada continues to offer all that is good. SANDALS GRENADA

SARAH INGLEFIELD

Having assumed her first CEO position the year of a global pandemic it should come as no surprise that in her first year in the role Sarah Inglefield would make an example out of it. In 2020 she completely disrupted the traditional advertising agency landscape in T&T when she rebranded and pivoted her agency, Inglefield, Ogilvy & Mather from its idyllic 'brick and mortar' suburban location, transforming it to Ogilvy Caribbean, a 100% fully remote hybrid model. What was once labelled as 'crazy' by some of her industry peers is now respected and replicated. Sarah's spirited fearlessness has shown the community what being a change-maker can lead to and accepts the labels it sometimes comes with. She strongly believes that the only way to transform an agency and an industry is through personal transformation. When she's not running an agency Sarah balances her days with mindful meditation practice, yoga, mentoring kids with the aid of her popular Tik Tok platform and enjoys sharing time with Scotty, her Yorkshire terrier puppy.

DISRUPTIVE LEADERSHIP

PANEL DISCUSSION Dr. Luz Longsworth Judy McCutcheon Dr. Safeeya Mohammed Dr. Ann Wallace

Disruptive Thinking – Is the Future of the Caribbean Female?

Disruptive Thinking Panelists

We’ve heard the expression over and over again – The Future is Female. First off what does that even mean and secondly, as a region is that even possible for us?

Yet when used in relation to women it conjures up images of aggressive, bossy, and pushy. Why does it seems when women gain positions of power it’s at the expense of men and how can we reverse this type of zero-sum thinking?

Given the male dominated culture that exists in most of our Caribbean organisations, how can we even begin to see women as partners and drivers of what we all want – better societies, prosperous economies?

We can’t get to the place of equality without having men as allies. Why is there is there a need to have men as allies in our equality fight? How do we bring them into the conversation and where do we find them?

We all know the stats – more women are enrolled in colleges and universities globally. Women are highly skilled and more educated, yet they continue to face pay inequity. Even if women are given the chance for upward mobility they are not paid equally as their male counterparts. Black women face an even more dire situation – they have a double whammy of being female and black. How do we reconcile this from a Caribbean perspective? When the word power is used – it carries with it very different meaning for men vs women. Power denotes strength and might in all dimensions for men.

In our Caribbean context we’ve had female Prime Ministers, female Heads of States, and female Ministers of Government, yet still, there are laws on the books that dictate what a woman can and cannot do with her body – a kind of ownership if you will. How do you suppose we can collectively change these laws or maybe the more apt question should be is there a will to change these laws, because in asking men to be our allies in this fight, we have to first lead the way.

For the future to be truly female, it has to be one that is all encompassing. It has to be an inclusive future.

For the future to be truly female, it has to be one that is all encompassing. It has to be an inclusive future. Are we as a region actively hiring women who are differently abled? Are we creating workspaces that cater to them? Better yet, the pandemic has collapsed the need for physical workspaces, we can now work from anywhere- are we even considering hiring these women? The pandemic has seen the rise of several entrepreneurial initiatives among women. It looks like women are now on the rise more than ever. However, do you think that the pandemic has advanced the women’s agenda or set it back some, since women are now faced with the extra burden that comes with working from home – teaching, caregivers to ill and aging parents, and finding the line between their work and home life?

Our individual experiences and our ability to influence are key factors in shaping the perspectives of the next generation. How can we rewrite the script on living with intention both in our homes and at work? Networking is a key that opens doors. What are some non-traditional practices that can be employed to help women to understand the role we play in building and making connections, and mentoring and managing talent? What are some of the cultural habits that need to be developed within our organizations in order to foster a healthier approach to the women's leadership experience?

STRESSED EMPLOYEES? Reimagine your Culture of Wellness and Resilience

“Most of the world’s 3.4 billion workers are unwell.” As stated in the 2016 Global Wellness Institute research report on The Future of Wellness at Work. Today, 2021, during the unprecedented pandemic of COVID-19, where our world is changing at an incomparable pace, there is a rising epidemic of an unwell stressed workforce where economic insecurity plagues our population. It is further reported that 76% of the working world is struggling with their wellbeing and fulfillment.

Is stress a perception? It is well documented that different people perceive different stimuli to be more or less stressful. Many times, stress can be a time-consuming, and counter-productive reaction to an inert stimulus.

However, once we can deliberately choose a response versus a reaction to this stimulus and we can intentionally train our minds to cope better with stress. Stress can be helpful, but The Economic Cost of a Stress stress can also bring a person to full blown panic attacks and In the United States, where the most at worst, depression, and extensive data are available, the costs suicide. of chronic disease, work-related injuries, stress, burnout, and Subsequently, in this article, employee disengagement is the GOOD, the BAD and the estimated to be more than $2.2 UGLY of Stress are explored trillion each year or 12 percent of and ways to prevent stress GDP. The Good: Eustress Eustress: moderate or normal psychological stress interpreted as being beneficial for the experiencer. Stress means you care about something. Being stressed out is the body’s attempt to tell us this thing is important. A study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology shows higher levels of stress correlates to more meaning in the participants’ lives. Kelly McGonigal, a health psychologist at Stanford University, maintains that stress has numerous upsides, if it is viewed in the right light. “Those who believe stress is negative have worse outcomes than those who recognize that stress is a natural response that people can use to their benefit.”

Stress can be good, with the right mindset. Going back to the definition of stress, it is a natural, physiological response. While stress can be a complex response to neutral situations, evolution designed stress to help us survive harmful situations. Whether one is newly confirmed positive for COVID-19 or to appear in a public speaking event or take an exam, our brain communicates signals to prepare for the situation, releasing our battle hormone, Adrenaline. Over-exposure can be damaging to ones health. Because of this, adrenaline is a hormone worth understanding.

The fight-or-flight hormone:

Adrenaline Adrenaline causes a noticeable increase in strength and performance, as well as heightened awareness, in stressful times. This reaction causes air passages to dilate to provide the muscles with the oxygen they need to either fight danger or flee. Adrenaline also triggers the blood vessels to contract to re-direct blood toward major muscle groups, including the heart and lungs. The body's ability to feel pain also decreases, which is why you can continue running from or fighting danger even when injured. Adrenaline also causes a release of glucose which a fight-or-flight response would use. After the stress has subsided, adrenaline’s effect can last for up to an hour.

Problems associated with adrenaline While adrenaline is an important survival strategy of your body's ability to endure, sometimes the body will release the hormone when it is under stress but not really facing physical danger, it may be perceived danger. This can create feelings of dizziness, light-headedness, and vision changes. When no danger is present, that extra energy has no use, and this can leave the person feeling restless and irritable. For a diabetic, the extra glucose circulating within the bloodstream will cause a hyperglycemic spike. Excessively high levels of the hormone due to stress without real danger can cause a jittery, nervous feeling, palpitations, increased blood pressure, anxiety, heart damage, insomnia, and list can go on.

Heightened stress within a pandemic is NORMAL.

But it can quickly transform into anxiety that impairs clear concise thinking, alters behaviours and have long term adverse health effects.

The Ugly:

Becoming Anxious and Overwhelmed Globally we know that this pandemic is causing people to feel anxious, distressed or worried: fear of contracting the virus, of family becoming sickened; stress and anxiety related to isolation and quarantine measures; distress about separation with family members; losing ones job, now unable to meet bills; fear of longer term impacts of the global disruption; among other reasons. The stress of a pandemic can take a toll on your mental health. With the rise of technology and artificial intelligence, work is becoming more demanding and fluid, requiring constant learning and adaptation. Technologies that are meant to create efficiency and convenience, paradoxically also keeps us tethered to our digital devices and leave us unable to “unplug” from work and obligations. In a vicious cycle, we may bring our underlying poor health and personal issues to the workplace, where we become unmotivated and unproductive. Or the workplace may never leave our consciousness as the possibility of disconnecting increases.

It is now imperative to develop sustained coping mechanisms to stay resilient during this coronavirus pandemic. What is fundamentally important to acknowledge is that stress is the end of a process, the beginning is how individuals manage their experiences on a daily basis. Do they make the right choices? Do they develop the right skills? Do they develop the right habits? Do they manage themselves well? Or do they just succumb to the overwhelm and stress.

Prepare, Plan not panic Knowledge and preparation can help reduce feelings of panic and associated stressed. Prepare for the worst-case scenarios and create a plan for you and your family. Write down specific worries you have about how coronavirus may disrupt your life. If you start feeling overwhelmed, take a break. Make a list of all the possible solutions you can think of. Try not to get too hung up on “perfect” options. Include whatever comes to mind that could help you get by. Focus on concrete things you can problem solve or change, rather than circumstances beyond your control. After you’ve evaluated your options, draw up a plan of action. When you’re done, set it aside and resist the urge to go back to it until you need it or your circumstances significantly change

Emotions are contagious, so be mindful who you seek support and counsel from.

businesses, the neuroscience of mindfulness, the other emerging fields of study that justify doing good and the pursuit of wellbeing. These emerging and converging trends have led some futurists to label the next economic age as the “wisdom economy” or the “human economy.”

This is where organizations can differentiate themselves. When a holistic approach to getting the best from people extends beyond hitting targets and focuses on the health and wellness of its employees, this can have a tremendous positive impact on behaviour. It can also become a powerful discerning factor for the organization as this improves its culture as well the organization’s brand. This solidifies the necessity for wellness integration within the workplace and tools to equip the working population to counter stress, burnout and develop resilience strategies. Imagine creating a harmonious cycle of wellness and work, where we feel healthy and balanced, where we create a consciousness of energy and focus, where we feel appreciated and supported, where our wellbeing is nurtured and valued. In order to thrive in the future, it is highly recommended that businesses and organizations adopt a ‘culture of wellness and resilience’ within the ever-changing work environments.
