Usually, whenever I do a portrait shoot, I do not have a specific plan other than make the girl look and feel beautiful and to incorporate nature in some kind of way. The same is true for these images. I knew that I wanted a more natural styling, wavy hair and a reddish brown makeup to complement the model’s skin tone and eye color. I have been wanting to shoot with Shannon for a while, she has such gorgeous features and I love her freckles! The makeup artist and I understood immediately that we did not want to cover them up and to pronounce them as much as possible. The hair was not supposed to dominate this shoot, however, with the wind that was present that day, it unintentionally did. In hindsight, it would never have worked out as well as it did if it was not for nature and its ways to make images beautiful. This is something I experience over and over in my shoots and I would never want to miss that special something nature contributes which is why I’d rather have to deal with rain and wind and such than to have perfect lighting in the studio where everything can be controlled. I think it’s all about letting go. I absolutely love how the wind brings life to these pictures – it’s not about perfection but emotion.

REFLECTED LIGHT photos by NILS WACHTER

When i started portait photography last November i haven’t found my style yet – and i’m still not sure if i have found it by now to be honest. Therefore inspiration and constantly being open to new ideas was and is still very important for me. Having a fun time together during a shooting is crucial for me so laughing and joy is a part of it of course. Regarding the shots shown here, there has been a moment when Tina and I had to leave the location because the security guard was not very happy about us shooting in the building. Showing him a nice picture didn’t convince him at all. At least he waited some minutes before stopping us so we could create some amazing shots. Apart from that I always love the reaction of the models when I decide to use a piece of bulky transparent plastic during a shoot. They look at me sometimes as if I’m completely out of my mind and both of us start to laugh. When I show them the result after some clicks they are always like „Wow! That’s so cool!“. I love that moment. Shooting through a window is something completely else than having the model right in front of the lens. A piece of glass is like an invisible wall that separates the model from the photographer. It helps the models letting go and be far more real because there is some kind of protection inbetween. Working with reflections of light as in the shots

The reason why I started to shoot through windows is a pic by one of my favourite photographers, Sagar Manjarres. He made a shot through a window that is incredibly strong and interesting. So I decided to try this myself and I still try some of those shots in every shooting if possible – as with Tina, Corinne and Larissa. The shots of Venja and Kira have been possible through using a piece of transparent plastic that created reflections of the light and surroundings. Those shots were created during a workshop lead by Jean Noir. His work always fascinated me and having him as a teacher during a workshop is an experience for a lifetime. He is an incredibly inspiring person and his portraits are absolutely unique. He pushes you to leave your comfort zone and he loves and lives art. That is why I tried completely new stuff during those two days, with props described above and I ended up with two of my absolute favourite shots of all time. The shots of Venja and Kira were created during the workshop. We created moodboards with artistic shots to get a feeling of what we want do achieve. Corinne, Larissa and Tina either contacted me or got a request from me. I choose the models regarding my style, portfolio and the type of shooting of course. Even more important is sympathy for me. I only work with friendly people and people I find interesting or special. I’m not interested in a model but in the person behind that term. That’s why connection is very important for me. And this begins during the first talks and messages before making an appointment. I never used a make up artist for my personal shots. The models did the make up themselves. However I ask them to keep it as natural as possible because too much make up can be very distracting for me and it doesn’t suite my personal understanding of portrait photography.

of Kira and Venja can create amazing effects and an artistic touch, as well as it can bring more depth into a picture. That’s why I always work with those props. Shooting with in camera effects or reflections as in the shots of Kira and Venja is not easy. Its important that one thinks about the own reflection and that one pays attention to what reflects in the pic not to overdo an effect or distract from the model. Since window sometimes doesn’t allow to communicate well, it’s crucial that the model can act herself without many directions. Expression and acting out one’s feelings is very important. Music can help incredibly with this. I always shoot with music that supports the mood and helps a model to let go.

THE DRESS

photos by JANINA PULVERMÜLLER I’ve always been fascinated by haute couture. I love to put these special dresses on beautiful women. Even though I really like to work in the studio, I love to photograph the couture on location. Especially with Amy I like to develop special ideas, she is brave and creative, a great mixture. We wanted a scenery that was in contrast to the flowery that was in contrast to the flowery ,colorful dress and just a while ago I discovered this wall on a walk with my husband. The view, the old tree, and a single rock face - I knew straight away, I have to shoot in this place. It was very exciting, because you almost have to climb a short way and the slope is very steep. But Amy was immediately hooked, even though she probably hated me when she had to climb onto the ledge with the dress. With Anja, however, I wanted to create a color contrast between the

model and the dress. I love ginger girls and Anja has these wonderful blue eyes - perfect for the blue dress. The make-up should emphasize her eyes, which our make-up artist has done very well. What one does not see at all: the pictures were made in the backyard of our MUA’s apartment, where the sun gave us beautiful soft light. It didn’t need any more, I didn’t want any bric-a-brac, it was only about Anja and she was stunning.

NIGHTSHADE

photos by VERENA MANDRAGORA NIGHTSHADE was a challenge for my make up artists to define and accentuate the faces of the models just by small amount of make up using subtle nuances of shimmer and glitter. Eyes looking like pearls, every brush stroke turning into jewelry .... you cannot only wear make up as cosmetic but also as definition for nighty nighty dreams. When I learned that one of my models was wearing braces, which is a k.o.-criteria in classy beauty editorials, I immediately booked her. I love it a bit edgy and uncommon and those dental braces gave the special extra that made this heavenly extraterrestrial faces quite down-to-earth and just real. One of the models mentioned came from

Hungary, quite a new face and not fluent in English language, so her agency sent a scout with her for the translation and better commu nication. I appreciate when all parts of my team care for each other making the shoot not only possible, but also much more comfortable for everyone involved. NIGHTSHADE is a story about stardust on your skin, sparkling tears and deep deep dreams floating between wishes and reality you never want to become true.

BLUSH BABY MAKE UP: Helga Hanis ; HAIR: Areti Kasapi for Franck Provost The Make Up Artists Story behind the shot: Seraina is a young and beautiful Model with a strong look in her eyes. She still has that childish innocent face but in her eyes you can see that wild yet innocent look. This combination is what I wanted to show with the Baby Blush makeup look. I used the color pink to have this young, girly, fresh look and worked it all over her cheeks and messed it up to get that wild, rebel look. This shooting was rocking! It was a great team work, we were all in a super creative mood, and we just went with the flow! The results speak for themselves! I love all look s we created that day. Although I envisioned the looks in my head I had to be flexible and let go a few of my ideas as they did not look as good on the photo as they did in my head. The Hairstylists story: The inspiration for a shooting comes to me mostly spontaneously. When the make up artist and/or the photographer approach me with their visions, it doesn´t take me very long to

26

come to creative ideas. At this shoot it was very important for me to create a futuristic hairstyle, to support the make up and the idea of the photographer. It fit the model perfectly, because it is very fresh and also naughty. I love the connection of the results of the individual artists who made the picture what it is. My preparation for a shoot is more mental and then put it in practice to create my idea. To have fun and freedom is the most important thing for me to be able to free my imagination.

VIKTORIA

photos by DINA SCHMID When I’m doing a free project I love to bring in all my creative energy. I often plan all little details before the shoot and have already the finished picture in mind before I start searching for the matching model, location and accessories for my idea. Last year I made a makeup artist training so I’m able to work in a more flexible manner. A perfect make-up is very important for me because it safes me a lot of editing time in Photoshop. For this project, the photographer Gabriela Stiep invited me. We wanted to plan a shoot together for a while and she had booked the Ukrainian model Viktoria and rented the photo studio «deinstudio.ch». I was very excited because I already saw some amazing pictures from Viktoria. As we arrived at the studio we were overwhelmed by the possibilities of the different set ups the studio offered. While I was doing the hair and make-up we had to decide which

outfits and sets we are going to use. I like the series at the window the most. I love working with natural light because it gives the pictures a special kind of tension. Due to the soft light, it gives the picture a nice play between light and shadow. Viktoria works very professional and every pose she shows is perfect which gave us the possibility to take beautiful and unique picture within a few minutes. Viktoria knows how she appears and what looks good. I had an amazing time doing this shooting and it was a great experience. Therefore, a big thanks goes out to Gabriela Stiep and Viktoria for this amazing photoshoot.

TAYLOR

photos by VERA GREINER What a face...She's a stunner! I’m an all in or an all out person when it comes to my projects. I need something about the model that fascinates me, that really makes me want to shoot with that Person. And Taylor just got me when I saw pictures of her on facebook. Her skin and her face symmetry is so flawless. Maybe too flawless…? So I wanted to have pictures taken of her in which she is not as flawless at usual. I wanted do have her more rough, strong, cool with some dirty smokey eyes. A female James Dean. She should rock it! And whohoo.. she did… Her messy hair was not planned, but it turned out so cool that they became my favourite pictures of the series. We did the shooting in my atelier with a black background and one soft light in front by using a Canon 5D Mark III and a 50mm f1.8 lens. My shootings mostly don’t need a lot, I like it as simple as possible. My focus is on the model.

I want to register every mood in her face that’s why I work with the Speed Mode. As a make up artist since many years and photographer since 2014 I create my shootings all by myself. And yes it is exhausting to work like this, but its also the highest level of creativity and fun for me. When I do the styling and make up I discuss & laugh a lot with my Model and make her feel comfortable - and so I am. Taking pictures of a person is a very intimate process. I think the time I have with the Model before the shooting helps a lot. They know me now as a person not only as a photographer and this level of trust creates the most beautiful pictures.

EGZONA

photos by MAIK KANYANGA I'm always on the lookout for something special in a model; something that would catch my eye and compel me to do a photoshoot together. What I really like about Egzona is that she has the ability to be a real chameleon in front of the lens. I loved how she was playful in front of the camera! We really sense that she's completely free; a liberated spirit that cannot be caught! That's why I love to work with her, she has this little "je ne sais quoi" that makes her particularly unique. She is sophisticated, sensual, glamorous and wild, all the while being very natural.

We couldn't expect a better model for this story. We did this shoot at the makeup institution Ket's Akademie, and chose to use the raw grey wall to give it natural feel. The shoot was about nights in Havana, inspired by the colorful streets and happy spirit of the Cubanos. Renata used colourful pigments for the make-up and created sexy curls to add to the exotic and free-spirited vibe.

HUSKIES

photo by ANNE NITSCHKE Our model Adelina proposed me to do a huskies photo shoot and I was so happy because I always wanted to shoot with huskies. The shooting was planned many weeks ahead as it was big production. We actually were supposed to shoot December 2016 but as there was no snow, we had to postpone this shoot to January 2017. A team of 8 travelled to the Muotathal in Switzerland just for this shoot. We arrived at the heart of Switzerland full of snow - 50 cm waiting for us! The scene was just perfect. Exactly as I imagined it. A film maker and a making of photographer accompanied us to make a short “making of video” and take “behind the scenes photos”. We also organized smoke bombs to make the setup perfect. The huskies were so cute, I really wanted to get one so bad but the space in the car just gave me the opportunity to take a soft toy husky with me. Shooting with animals is not that easy. You can’t plan a photo or a setup, as you can’t always get the animals to do exactly as you ask. It gets especially hard if you have this one picture in your mind...honestly: We made the impossible possible and thanks to the help of the marketing manager of the “Erlebniswelt Muotathal” and his amazing tricks to get the huskies to pose for us, we reached this perfect picture. He worked hard the whole time to get the attention of the two huskies just to look as majestic as the model. Everyone was wearing a warm jacket, but Adelina just posed as she didn’t feel any cold. She was brilliant. And after an hour we got this perfect photo, that we wanted!

BALLS

photos by ANDREAS STEINER In 2017, my theme was “corporealities”, in the sense of “the many different possibilities of visualizing the physical appearance of the human body”. When researching, I stumbled across the artist Bart Hess, a visual artist, who has dedicated his whole work to this theme and has found extremely fascinating ways of working with the human body. The outfit in our shooting was clearly inspired by his work and chosen to be minimalistic and abstract; cloths transform the appearance of our bodies in a very direct way, which then impacts the way we feel. Transforming our body shapes our mindset – “cloths make people”. The interaction of physical reality and mental state is complex and not unproblematic; external ideals of beauty collide with physical reality and our own, internal, perception of our bodies often deviates. This shooting is the result of a non-commercial collaboration between model, MUA and photographer. We found the model through Visage International Management Zurich. Such shootings always require a healthy dose of trust, there is always a fine line between failure and success in rather experimental creative works, so I communicated intensively with MUA and model to make sure that everybody was on the same page. This was especially important since we did not work together before. The MUA contributed the ideas for hair and facial makeup, which turned out really well. The posing emerged

during the shooting when interacting with the model; not the easiest task especially for a newcomer model. I think all parties involved have more than one anecdote especially from this shooting. The one I will always remember is buying the stockings in the store. I encountered more than one raised eyebrow from both men and women when spending a long time in front of the shelves and paying at the checkout. Ask me if you have any questions, I am an expert in stockings now. What I loved most about the shooting was the freedom to experiment with new techniques, styles and also people; experimental editorial work is always a good opportunity to get to know new MUAs and models. I usually further develop ideas that worked for editorial shootings, some ideas then become part of my standard repertoire. Cutting stockings such that a hole of a certain size results is a science on its own. Also do not underestimate placing styrofoam balls on the body of a model. But we’re back to anecdotes, these were not really obstacles. I dare to say that we did not encounter any obstacles during this shooting.

DOT´S AND LINES photos by NOÉMI OTTILIA SZABO

To be honest, we had no clue what were doing. We just wanted to try something out with a male model and my brand new daylight studio. We thought: why not do a beauty-shoot with a boy ? Challenge accepted! I have no idea how to do beauty-stories and I’m rarely shooting boys. I found Jonas on the website from Time Model Agency and fell in love (like you fall in love with a face you just want to shoot, not that thing with real feelings). So it was clear who would be our test-person. Sylvia the Make up Artist wanted to try something with

colours and painted some dots and lines on his face and tadaaa, that’s how it turned out. She really did an amazing make up job. We all had fun and I think it turned out pretty cool for a someone who has no idea about beauty. I just like to catch a moment in between and this is so much more difficult if you have just a face with some colours on it to catch.

BLUE IS THE NEW BLACK MAKE UP by DANKA TOPALOVIC

The Make Up Artist´s Story behind the shot: Inspiration is everywhere, we just need to open our eyes for it. Nowadays people are staring constantly on their screens instead of looking what’s happening around them I think that’s a huge problem in our society.. I call this „the death of the own creativity“ It’s so important to us, we who are creative, we need to feed our senses. Not only with other artists work, also with everything that surrounds us. I find my inspiration everywhere. Just a few days ago I was cooking and the food inspired me to do a textured look, which I am currently planing. Of course the internet and many other stunningly talented artists inspire me too, but more and more I try to find my own creative style and this works only if I allow my own creativity to flow and trust myself in what I’m doing.

It’s very tough though, but even after ten years in the make-up industry I am still growing and I learn everyday something new I love to play with textures and colours. The past months I felt like I had to do a blue eye make up, but topped with other colours and different kind of textures. So I started with a simple Blue Look on the eye. I enjoy the process of my own creativity, that means that I start with a basic look and build it up to the final image. Of course I create a few looks in between the first and last one. It‘ always tricky to know when to stop.. because once the products are placed, there’s no turning back..
