My background is in rail – I entered the industry via Transport for London’s (TfL) engineering graduate scheme, accredited by IMechE, so I’ve been a member since I started my career. I’ve found the Institution very flexible – I started working towards my Chartership while at TfL and continued to do so when I moved to a new role as Fleet Engineering Manager at Heathrow Express.

Since the age of six, I have been keen on how everyday objects and large structures are built. I was always interested in mechanical toys or gadgets.

The boost that becoming a Chartered Engineer gave to my career, made me realise the importance of continued learning. I’ve taken a year out of work to pursue an full-time MBA. Being part of the IMechE has helped me to stay connected to the engineering community whilst I’m learning. The Library resources and the different divisions have helped me with my coursework. I’ve also been attending webinars to stay abreast of new technologies and advancements. I’ve enjoyed taking part in IMechE’s volunteering programmes, with the opportunity to travel the world. I’m also passionate about youth engagement, and organised an Engineering Your Future event for sixth form students at IMechE’s head office. There are plenty of social and networking opportunities, such as intra-institutional sports days, which help you meet people who work in different fields. If I want a second opinion on a technical issue, I can call contacts I’ve met through IMechE to hear their thoughts. There are so many reasons to be a member.

After graduating from my Mechanical Engineering degree at Brunel University London, I worked in different engineering jobs before joining Mendick Waring Limited; a building services consultancy firm in North London. Having gained a sound industry experience in building services, I applied to become an Incorporated Engineer with IMechE. I received a lot of support personally from the Institution during the application process, which proved to be very useful. They were very proactive in reviewing my draft application a number of times, and provided positive feedback. I regularly use the Institution’s online Library for technical reading and accessing books relating to the industry. The Institution’s many events keep me up to date with any global developments in engineering. I would like to further progress my technical knowledge and career to become a Chartered Engineer, then a Fellow. Professional registration shows my capabilities as a competent engineer, who can deliver projects accurately and on time. It has given me the confidence, to reach my full potential as an engineer.
