Micailah Cialella Design 3: Fall Semester December 14, 2020 1

This semester focused on the neighborhood of Sharswood, Philadelphia and required multiple site analysis’. A lot of emphasis was put on learning the culture of the residents and their needs. Every project completed this semester was specifically designed to increase understanding of what it meant to design for a specific group of people and/or community. Additionally, being restricted by local zoning codes proved to be another challenge. For project one, each person was assigned a specific codex and had to design a structure where someone woud go to read the codex. The space was to be small enough to fit within an urban environment and was specifically for one person to experience at a time. The codex for this specific project was the archicomic,“Yes Is More” by Bjarke Ingles and it focuses on the evolution of architecture as well as how best to present the architectural design process to the public. The final design attempted to replicate the architect’s design process as moement through different layers of the building until you reach the final room or “codex space” of the structure. For project two, the knowledge accumulated over the semester about the rowhouses in Philadelphia (specifically Sharswood) was used to design a rowhouse for a specific client (or clients) according to their individual needs. The space for the rowhouse was already a lot in Sharswood, where another rowhouse currently sits and the clients were a small family of three with a frequently visiting inlaw. The final design payed close attention to the client’s needs and desires as well as the restrictions of the zoning codes of the site. For project three, the challenge was to design a community center for the community of Sharswood at the existing site of the Dox Thrash House and neighboring lots. The main restriction was that original fascades of the Dox Thrash House and twin rowhouse had to be preserved at all costs. The community center is to function as a multi-educational space for the community and might become a reality sometime in the future. The final design focused on connecting the community through carefully designed art and garden spaces.

This semester had a unique set of challenges. Learning how to use digital rendering programs such as Rhino, remembering to design with CONTEXT, and adhearing to specific zoning codes were the key issues faced in design this semester. Additionally, a lot of importance was placed on designing for a specific client and community. All of the work done in this portfolio is a reflection of many long hours of hardwork and conceptual thought. Each project focused on developing a different set of skills and the skillsets built apon one another in order to produce a more informed design each time.
