Natural Stone Industry in Turkey In terms of natural stones, and especially marble, Turkey has ample resources since it is located in the Alpine mountain range. Turkey has been one of the oldest marble producers in the world dating back to 4,000 years production on the Marmara Island. Turkey has immense reserves of marble, travertine, onyx, conglomerate, breccias and magmatic rock. Turkey’s total marble reserves are estimated to be ranging from 5.2 billions m3 which equals to approximately 13.9 billions of tons. Turkey has an exploitable deposits

of 3.8 billions m3 marble; the same figureis 2.7 billions m3 for travertine and 995 millions m3 for granite. According to estimates, Turkey has 40 percent of the world’s total marble reserves. Having a considerable and quite diverse mineral base, Turkey has one of the world’s largest natural stone reserves, which is considered to be excellent quality and exclusive due to great variety of colors and textures. Those projections rank Turkey among the world’s most important natural stone producers.

Production More than 2.500 marble quarries, 2.000 factories and about 9.000 workshops operating in the sector; 90 percent of the quarries are located in the west of Anatolia, mainly in the Aegean and Marmara Regions. The production of natural stones in Turkey has grown rapidly in the last decade. Large scale private companies invested in integrated processing plants, which resulted in developments in the local

market. With the introduction of modern production equipments and methods, Turkey has become one of the world’s prominent natural stone producers. Turkey’s total production capacity of marble is 6.5 millions cubic meters and for granite it is 10,5 millions square meters . In recent years marble production increased sharply.

We organize national participation of the world’s

outstanding natural stone and technologies exhibitions: Marmomac, Coverings, Construct Canada and Shuitou Exhibition, which are held in Italy, USA, Canada and P.R.C. We also support Istanbul Marble Exhibition, Bursa Block, İstanbul Marble Eurasia and Marble Show Antalya exhibitions which aim to build a trade bridge between Europe and Middle East. We also invite trade delegations from potential countries and organize buyers’ missions in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Turkish Exporters’ Assembly to improve export rate in the target markets. We host purchasing directors of buyers from foreign countries making them meet with Turkish natural stone exporters. 11


Natural Stone Industry in Turkey The Turkish Natural Stones Archive was created in 2008 and updated with the participation of 120 companies and the classification of 600 natural stones in 2014. It consists of sub categories of the types and colors of natural stones in the marble folder, nearly 450 marbles are classified by their colors and onyx type natural stones are also classified under the same type.

Our Projects: UR-GE IMIB manages 6 projects for the Development of International Competitiveness (UR-GE Projects), granted by Turkish Ministry of Economy with its 170 member SME companies. The projects’ members

attend prestigious exhibitons of natural stones all over the world: Italy, China, Singapore, Morocco, USA, France, United Arab Emirates, Canada, India, Australia, Russia.

Natural Stone Design Contest “Natural Stone Design Contest“ is a design competition targeting the youth with the aim of making them closer to the use of Natural Stones in many different projects. It’s being organized since 2012 and welcoming creative projects from students and professionals in the

field of coverings, Turkish bath and bathroom, decorative products and hotel lobbies. Besides money awards, the completion is also a great chance for winners to be awarded with scholarship for their design education abroad.
