Built in 1903 and lovingly restored in 2001, this 902-seat theatre hosts an array of plays, musicals, comedy shows, movies and more. Known as one of the country’s finest examples of Frank Matcham theatre design and one of Britain’s leading provincial theatres, the Opera House offers the perfect, family-friendly day out.

Set within 23 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, the Pavilion provides a wonderful family day out, particularly in the sunshine. This historic venue dates back to 1871 and displaying the Victorian grandeur of the era, the Pavilion hosts a variety of events and festivals throughout the year, from summer food festivals to Christmas fairs. There are also two brilliant adventure playgrounds in the gardens with plenty of space for the little ones to run around.

With over 1,200 pieces on display covering 360 million years of history, The Buxton Museum and Art Galley is a delight for art and history lovers. ‘Wonder of the Peak’ is the main, permanent exhibition and gives a fascinating insight into the history of Buxton. The museum opens Tuesday to Saturday all year round and also opens on Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter to the end of September.

Just a 20 minute walk from The George, is the magnificent Poole’s Cavern, which boasts many strange and magical formations formed of limestone. Evidence of prehistoric life has even been found in the cave making it a landmark of great fascination. You will even be treated to homemade sweet treats and trinkets from the gift shop and artisan café.

Dogs are welcome in the Visitor Centre, Café and on standard Poole’s Cavern Guided Tours. Dogs may not be permitted on special event tours.

solomon’s temple

Beyond Poole’s Cavern, Solomon's Temple sits proudly overlooking the dramatic Peak District landscape, and can be viewed from the upper floors of The George. Built in the 1800’s, on the site of a neolithic burial mound, this Victorian folly offers a delightful viewing spot to stop and take in the beautiful surroundings after a worthwhile walk.

We all know Buxton is famous for its drinking water, so why not fill up your bottle straight from the spring itself and enjoy a refreshing interlude on your travels around Buxton. Located in the historic Crescent area, close to the Pavilion Gardens, the geothermal spring is marked with a shrine to St Anne and offers an opportunity for some smooth hydration from a spring which Mary Queen of Scots is known to have used when she was prisoner at Chatsworth House.

Arnemetia was a Romano-British goddess and she still weaves her magic and mystery throughout her realm of Buxton. This treasure hunt will take you around the town to find pieces of the secret code and enter the portal if you are a worthy contender. A great way to get kids involved in a tour around this fascinating spa town.

national forest adventure farm

Part of Postern House Farm, the National Forest Adventure Farm started life as a ‘Maize Maze’ for visitors in 2004 and has since grown into a wonderful year round attraction for the whole family. With GoKarts, crazy golf, assault courses and fascinating fossil digs there is hours of fun to keep the little ones (and big ones) entertained. There are picnic areas and an ice cream parlour for delicious refreshments and as a working farm, visitors can amble round the animal paddocks and barns and make friends with cows, donkeys, sheep and shire horses. There is even a farmyard Safari Tractor to ride around the farm and see how many animals you can spot along the way.

Just a 10 minute drive away from the centre of Buxton and located right at the start of the fantastic Mosal Trail, you will find Blackwell Mill Cycle Hire. Choose from a selection of well-priced regular and electric bikes which also come with child seats and trailers if required. Once you’re all kitted out and ready to go, you can set off on this breathtaking trail. A disused railway line, closed in 1968, the line was converted into a traffic-free cycle track which leads visitors from Blackwell Mill to Bakewell with stunning views through lit tunnels, gorges and surrounding limestone hills.
