ARCHITECTURE

Koonalda Dwellings

Drafting for Dwelling Duplex, Koonalda Grove Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, in collaboration with Jonatahn Merin, client: Mutahar Hussain

The project was a dwelling duplex for two families, on a site with an existing dwelling that will be demolished. On the empty site will be proposed a dwelling duplex, responding to the local building codes regarding the site limitation, as well as the required surfaces for a family house. The proposed houses will be treated as one, having the same exterior treatment: materials

and exterior characteristics, but separated by a rated firewall. To respond to the urban and building local regulation, the layout of the houses is asymmetrical and in steps, so one house will have a bigger total surface area than the other. In both cases, the surface is calculated to answer the daily needs of a family, without creating small spaces or wasting space.

Regarding the functional scheme, the ground floor of both houses will accommodate the more public, opened functions, like the family room, dining space, lounge area, kitchen and utility spaces (laundry, powder room, storage, garage), while the first floor accommodates the more intimate functions: bedrooms, dressings, and bathrooms. The first floor will be smaller than the ground floor, the remaining spaces will be covered with roofs, or will become balconies for the bedrooms located on the main facade.

On this project, I was in charge with the drafting of the architectural drawing for the preliminary issue of obtaining the building construction permits. My role in this project was to bring the existing architectural drawing up to date, to make the required changes based on the requirements of the client. The main job was to create the files and documents in 2 D AutoCAD format and printing format, using the collaborator’s specific working requirements.

Separate from the main job, I worked on the creation of the 3 D model and renderings of the duplex dwelling, based on the technical drawings of the house, following the indications of materials and details. Taking into consideration the location of the project - in the southern hemisphere (different from the northern hemisphere characteristics I learned) and for a better understanding of the house orientation, I created a shading scheme, showing how the spaces will receive sunlight during winter and summer.

Metricon Houses

Landscape design for Metricon Homes, Lot 737 and Lot 738, Swan Roadm Pimpama, Queensland, Australia, in collaboration with Jamie Loft, client: Metricon

The project was to create a landscape design for two dwellings in a newly developed neighborhood, to answer the requirements of two potential clients. The landscape design was made based on the existing architectural drawings if the houses, with the purpose of construction and advertising for sale. Each Lot was treated differently, depending on the requirements of

the client and the overall dimension of the house, using plant and exterior furniture characteristic to the Australian environment and design trends. The houses are not included in the personal design, being designed by the client according to the developer’s requirements and based on the local residential design guidelines. The landscape design followed the same guidelines.

On this project, I was in charge of creating a 3 D model and renderings of both lots, based on the guidelines offered by the client and the collaborator. The detailing and architecture of the houses were not part of the job, the modeling and rendering were made based on the existing architectural drawings offered by the client. The second phase of the project was to create the technical drawings for obtaining the building permits, in the case of both houses. I was in charge with the architectural drawings for the landscape design, as well as the drawing of the technical details for the pool, pergola, water feature, and fence.

The first Lot was design based on the nature features, having as the main theme the green and the grass, incorporating a small fountain and pergola in the design to offer an exterior living and dining space in the back of the house. The main entrance and the sides of the house have beds of various plants, as well as wall crawling plants and trees. The aim was to combine all elements: green, water, mineral, into a unique and balanced design with the main aim of creating a peaceful and interesting landscape design.

The second Lot was design based on water features, incorporating fountain and pool into the landscape design, to create a recreational and dynamic space for the house. The plants and vegetation used in this case are similar to the ones found in the first lot, so the overall image will be continuous. The front of the house has a water feature at the entrance as well as characteristic plants, combining the element of water with green and mineral. On the left-hand side of the house was proposed a small barbecue area that needed to be fitted to respond to the limited space and to avoid the blocking of the pathway.

Dinu House

Technical drawings for a single family residence, Dambovita, Romania, in collaboration with Eduard Pascu, client: Dinu Dragos

The project is a single family residence located in the countryside, having small dimension and a design that will answer the requests of the clients’ everyday uses. The concept of the house tries to create a link between the interior functions and the exterior image, generating this way a different treatment of the first floor from the ground floor. Taking into consideration the fact that the first floor is dedicated to family functions: living room, dining room, kitchen, utility rooms, and the first floor is dedicated to sleeping functions: bedrooms and bathrooms, the upper floor is treated in a darker color, obtained from the vertical extension of the roof.

On this project, I was in charge of creating the technical detail drawings for obtaining the building permit, taking into consideration the collaborator’s proposal and the offered architectural drawings. Also, I created the final renderings used for the purpose of presentation for the client and for obtaining the building permit.

Mediterranean House

Proposed residence for a single family, Ilvesheim, Germany in collaboration with Eduard Pascu, client: G Design

The project is aiming to create a house based on Mediterranean architectural styles and the personal needs. The project is looking to create segregation between the two parts needed in the house, the living area, and the guest/gym area by creating a succession of spaces, resulting in the composition of the main block that accommodates the main functions of the house and a secondary

main functions of the house and a secondary block that accommodates the guest house functions. The house tries to make the best of the sites and the legal building limitations, resulting in the positioning of the house near the access street, so the back of the lot will have the function of a garden with tall vegetation for privacy purposes.

The lot is composed of three united lots, located in a small town, where privacy and intimacy are important features of the community. The project had two phases, the first proposal being too compact for the client, we reached the final design by opening all main functions to the garden and closing the faรงade from the street. The landscape is following the line of the house design, adding the water, the fire, and the earth as part of the house whole concept. The colors and materials are following the Mediterranean style and on the south, east and west part of the house, where there are wooden shutters and white stucco. The exterior shell of the house is created in such way that all interior spaces will have natural light and ventilation.

The project was a team project, my role being in creating the 2 D AutoCAD drawings based on the concept sketches offered by the collaborator, creating the renders and post processing of the final renders. Also, being a team project, I was an active part of the concept phase, trying to find new ways of resolving the functional problems, keeping in mind the requests of the client.

INTERIOR DESIGN

J Apartment

Interior design for an apartment, Miami, Florida, USA, client: Steve James

The project was to design a Miami apartment for holiday use, taking into consideration the existing layout and dimensions, as well as some existing pieces of furniture (sofa, whole kitchen, and bar, bed). The aim of the project was to create an airy design, with as little furniture as possible considering the seasonal use, using light colors and natural textures, such as wood, textile, and

ceramics. The main provocation of the project was to create a functional connection between the kitchen, living, and dining, taking into consideration the existing location of the kitchen and the preferred location for the living and TV. The result is that the dining will be positioned near the windows, with the possibility of using it as an entertaining area.

Through this project, I tried to create small frames where the furniture, decoration and existing apartment layout will combine in an interesting and dynamic image. Regarding the functions, the only change made from the original layout was the transformation of the storage space located in the middle of the house into a game room or work room, considering the fact that the client had requested a working office. The dark color of the walls is proper for working on the computer, avoiding the risk of light reflection on the electronics. Considering the clients’ profile and requests I created a small space for lounging and reading, using the space layout created by the structural beams.

The project was based on the client’s wishes and furniture preferences, taking into consideration the possibility of acquiring the listed items. My main job was to create the 3 D model and rendering in order for him to see the final images, as well as the final furniture list with detailed descriptions. The spaces that needed to be designed are the living, dining, workspace, and bedroom. To create a complete image of the apartment, as well as for a better understanding of the layout, I created the 2 D drawing, the lighting plan that is based on the photos of the space, and the furnishing of the remaining spaces: bathrooms, dresser, and hallway.

4R Apartment

Interior design SCF / 3BHK, Bangalore, India in collaboration with OG Design, client: Mr. & Mrs. Rajat

According to the client’s brief and taking into consideration their family profile, objectives, design preferences and personal hobbies, the proposed interior design tries to answer all the requirements. The main theme of the design is the use of modern and contemporary design with a touch of traditional decoration. Giving the profile of the clients, the materials used in the whole apartment are warm and natural materials, like wood, stone, white plaster and warm colored textiles. Considering the types of hobbies that the clients have, the design proposes a series of decoration and paintings that enhances and incorporates them into the apartment.

Due to the fact that the family consists of two small children, the other two bedrooms, except the master bedroom, were turned in children’s bedrooms. So, the bedroom that is the nearest to the master bedroom is turned into a nursery for a two-month child and the second bedroom is for the four-year-old member of the family. The foyer is composed of a big round mirror, an n interior bench and a closet for daily used clothes. The unit used in the living is part of a series of storage and bookcase units from MDF Italia- Random Bookcase, which incorporate a working space and a media space. The stone cladding wall is defining the dining area and the wood panels define the media corner of the house.

The kitchen has a simple white and wood design and contains cabinets and drawers, space for storage, incorporated stove, fridge and washing machine. Also, there are tall cabinet units for food storage. The kitchen tiles are of Indian influence, creating a special and colorful space. To make the most of the small kitchen space, there is a proposed breakfast area near the window, creating visual continuity with the kitchen countertop. The master bedroom has the same theme as the living, with a wooden panel at the top of the bed, to give it a warmer and royal feeling. The colors are the same as in the living and dining, white and wood, creating a unique and whole picture.

The project was based on an existing layout and specific furniture positioning, the intervention being in selecting the specific furniture, creating the required atmosphere and managing the color palette to answer the cultural and traditional requirements, whilst keeping a modern overall feel. I was in charge of creating the 3 D model, renderings, and post-processing, as well as proposing the furniture, walls and floors treatment, color palette and decorations. Separately from the job, I created the 2 D AutoCAD proposed furnished plan, to have a better understanding of the space and the connection between the functions, and a detailed 2 D AutoCAD representation of the wet areas.

N. Bratescu House

Interior design for a converted burned historic house, Targoviste, Romania in collaboration with Eduard Pascu with Adiela Talos, client: Confidential

The project is a scenario of implementing the function of library and tea house in a locally, well-known, historic house. The house had a strange and sad destiny, being abandoned and set on fire, today is just a ruin that keeps some of its old characteristics. The aim of this project was to revive the house by giving it a different function, converting it to a more public usage, so people can see and understand the importance of conserving and using heritage buildings. Considering that the existing house has its exterior shell intact, the project was more focused on the interior of the house, how to integrate the new function into the existing spaces without ruining the historical layout of the house. The existing layout of the house allowed the adaptation of the rooms to accommodate a small library and a tea space. The main hallway has a sealed door opening that keeps the memory of the fire by exposing the burned wall, so the house faith not to be forgotten.

The house is a two level house, with spaces of different surfaces. The ground floor is partially buried, with brick walls and brick vault over the main room, elements generating the perfect space for small events – movie projections, conferences, expositions. The first floor can be accessed through an imposing stair, accommodating the main functions of the house – library and tea house. The project was a teamwork, each member having a specific job in order to create a successful final project. I was in charge of the 3 D model of the interior based on the collaborators’ house model, as well as the rendering and post processing. Also, I had an active part in creating the 2 D AutoCAD files, specifically the furnished plans and furniture list with descriptions.

COMPETITION ARCHITECTURE

Island Waterfront Residence and Cottage

New Residence Competition organised by Arcbazar and Radu Oancea, St. Croix Island, Caribbean, USVI, in collaboration with Eduard Pascu, 2nd place

The main aim of the competition was to design two buildings, landscape design, conceptual drawings and technical plans for a waterfront residence and cottage in the United States Virgin Islands. The requirements were to create the main house for one family, that contained all the necessary functions, as well as an entertainment area with easy access and opened to the exterior;

and a cottage that can serve as renting house or guest house, that will be linked with the main house but with the possibility of having separate access points. Taking into consideration the climate, the functional requirements, as well as the aesthetic preferences, the project is composed of two units: the main house and the cottage, linked by a concrete slab, but separated by height difference.

The main house is a two-story house, where all the functions are on the top level - the entry level, while the underground level is for entertainment and summer use – summer kitchen, living, and interior-exterior pool. The cottage is a single story house, following the same architectural and aesthetic treatment as the main house, and is connected to the underground level of the main house.

Taking into consideration the abrupt topography of the site, the main house is partially buried, having the technical rooms and garage as buried functions. Considering the sustainable and environmental requirements of the competition, the project proposes buried water tanks with the possibility of collecting and filtering rain water, able to support the whole requirements of the complex. Also, having in mind the location of the project, each housing unit has solar panels and energy generators able to store and supply energy for the whole complex.

Considering the complexity of the project, the work was divided between collaborators, having as common ground the main concept and ideas for the project. For the purpose of full understanding of the project, we proposed the interior design for both houses, landscape design, and full technical drawings.

My role was to create the 3 D model of the house based on the concept sketches, creating the exterior design and well as the landscape design for the complex. I was in charge of creating the illustrations and infographics for a better understanding of the project, the exterior renders and post processing. Also, being a team project, I was an active part of the concept phase, trying to find new ways of resolving the functional problems, keeping in mind the requests of the client.

Faรงade for Vacant Block in Sydney

Remodeling Competition organised by Arcbazar and Tjinta Hulscher, New South Wales, Australia, in collaboration with Eduard Pascu, 2nd place

The aim of the competition was to remodel the façade of an existing design offered by the client and propose a landscape design for the lot taking into consideration the competitions’ requirements as well as the new development design guidelines. The house is located on a corner lot in a new development area and the main problem was to create an exterior treatment for

all the facades, considering the fact that the house has to be street appealing from multiple angles. Considering the requirements of the competition, the proposed changes were made on the exterior of the house, as well as to the interior layout, in order to obtain a correlation between the houses functions and exterior treatment.

The design proposes a similar treatment of the ground floor and first floor, connecting visually the windows with wood panels, to create an image of continuity and unity. The back of the house is treated slightly different from the street oriented facades, creating a difference between the treatment of the ground floor and the upper floor, connecting both with a glass block that houses the corner staircase.

The project was a team project, my role being in creating the 2 D AutoCAD drawings with the changes based on the existing plans, creating the renders and post processing of the final renders. Also, being a team project, I was an active part of the concept phase, trying to find new ways of creating an interesting and appealing, whilst keeping in mind the competition’s requirements.

Tiny Homes International Competition

New Residential Competition organised by AIA Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA, in collaboration with arch. Eduard Pascu

The main aim of the competition is to create a lower-cost solution for the need of affordable and subsidized housing in Chicago, particularly for young adults. The proposed project tries to answer the question of living spaces for the homeless people of Chicago. The proposal focuses on creating affordable, low-cost housing units that respond to the social requests as well as the environmental and architectural standards of the site.

The project was a team project, my role being in creating the 2 D AutoCAD drawings of the plans, sections and technical details, creating the landscape design of the complex, as well as the cost material list. Also, being a team project, I was an active part of the concept phase, trying to find new ways of creating an interesting and functional complex and housing unit, whilst keeping in mind the requirements of the competition.

Tree House Competition

Concept Design Competition, organised by Inspired Competition, in collaboration with arch. Eduard Pascu

The purpose of the competition was to imagine a tree house that can be used as a weekend retreat in a city in Romania. The location was chosen in the city of Iasi, located in the north of the country, a city that is said to be surrounded by seven hills. Considering the extension of the city and the fact that Iasi is one of the biggest cities in Romania, as well as a very active city, the tree house will be located on one of the city hills, becoming a point of belvedere as well as a retreat from the buzzing of everyday life. The main concept of the tree house was the total closing of the house from the exterior, becoming a house of secrets, an intimate and unique space for one or two individuals. The house can be completely closed to the exterior, or opened, depending on the situation and the needs of the user.

The main functions of the house are evolving around the trunk of the tree, on the main level being the living space, little kitchen, toilet and a technical room, and on the partial floor is the sleeping space with a sky window. Every glass wall in the house can be enclosed, so when the house is not occupied, it becomes one with the forest, considering that the mainly used material is wood. The project was a team project, my role being in creating the 2 D AutoCAD drawings of the plans, sections and technical details. Also, being a team project, I was an active part of the concept phase, trying to create an interesting and adaptable concept, whilst keeping in mind the technical, structural and buildable aspect of the design.

Varna Library International Competition

Concept Design Competition organised by Varna Municipality, Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria, WhAT Association, Varna, Bulgaria in collaboration with arch. Valentina Cacescu, Ioana Sararu, Georgiana Stanciu, Ioana Voiculescu

The project was conceived this library bearing in mind our own experiences as readers each time we open a new book. Every new story is a journey hidden within the pages of a book every new hero discovers the world around him for the first time through your eyes as the reader. The project tried imagining this library as a story in itself with you, the reader, being the main character from the very moment you lay your eyes on the massive and seemingly impenetrable

structure and want to discover more about it.The curves of the landscape pull you towards a secret pathway, narrow and windy and not so well lit at the beginning only to open up around you, later on, letting you perceive the space around layers upon layers. The core of the book, or in this case, the library, is the tall, well-lit atrium that goes all the way up till the last floor letting you glimpse a bit of what happens on each level without revealing all, each level in itself having a story of its own.

The static and dynamic go hand in hand with molding the aspect of the building: while inert, rough and austere in its outside appearance, the stories it tells on the inside are a whole different matter, but only to those who dare to venture on a journey of discovery. The project was a team project, my role being in creating the 3 D model of the interior, the interior design, and furniture design, taking into consideration the offered plans and concept sketches. I created a part of the interior renders and post processing, and I had an important role in the creation of the 2 D AutoCAD plans for the library main levels and sections. Also, being a team project, I was an active part of the concept phase, trying to create an interesting and adaptable concept, whilst keeping in mind the requirements of the competition.

COMPETITION INTERIOR DESIGN

New flat for a family with 2 children Competition

Interior Remodeling Competition organised by Arcbazar and Sergey, Москва 82, Мoscow, Russian Federation, 3rd place

The main purpose of the competition was the remodeling of a one bedroom apartment into a two bedroom apartment that can answer the needs of a young family with two children. The apartment was a 60 m flat with gray walls and no finishes, located in a 25 story new building. The main provocation of the project was the remodeling of the interior layout having in mind the location of the structural elements as well as the creation of new, functional and bright spaces.

After the relocation of a couple of walls and the demolition of some walls, there was possible the existence of an opened kitchen and dining design, creating a free flow layout. The old kitchen became a children’s bedroom, whilst room 1 became the master bedroom. The project tried to avoid small, dark and unusable spaces, making the most of the available space of the flat.

The color palette is a bright one, based on whites and warm and natural colors, trying this way to create the illusion of extra space and enlarged rooms. Considering the lack of space and the usage of an opened space kitchen design, there was proposed a furniture design for the

kitchen that can close while is unused and offer a more elegant and minimalist look. For this project, I created the 3D model based on the existing plan with the additional changes, the renders, and post-processing, as well as the 2D AutoCAD plan based on the existing plan.

Master Bathroom Competition

Interior Remodeling Competition organised by Arcbazar and Private, Kansas, USA

The aim of the competition was the remodeling of a Master Bathroom in a very modern style. Having into consideration the big dimensions of the room, as well as the requirements of the competition, the proposed solution was the usage of modern and rectangular shaped fixtures, as well as the usage of travertine as a general treatment if the floors and walls.

The bathtub and the shower are connected in an individual block, whilst the sinks and toilet are located on the opposite side. The line followed by the design is a clear and simple one, in a minimalist, trying to create special frames with a succession of elements from the foreground to the background.the ground floor and the first floor.

The color palette is a bright, based on whites and warm and natural colors, trying this way to create the illusion of extra space and the image of enlarged rooms. Considering the space dimensions and the usage of an opened space bathroom design, there was proposed a furniture design that can be easily integrated into the design. For this project, I created the 3 D model based on the existing plan, the rendering and post processing, as well as the 2 D AutoCAD plan with the proposal.

ACADEMIC

Square House

Proposed residence for a single family, Academic project, tutors: prof. dr. arch. Cristian Drughean, conf. dr. arch. Daniela Calciu, asist. dr. arch. Mariana Nitu

The residence is for one family and it’s designed based on a structural grid of 4.8x4.8 squares. The main objective of the project is to understand and apply the principle of modern architecture, free plan, and floating functions. The aim of the design is to create a functional layout within the limitation of the structural grid, that with functions that can answer all the needs of a single family house. The proposal is based on the case study houses, creating a horizontal and clear architectural image of the house.

The provocation was to connect, and yet to create a clear segregation between the day and night functions, whilst keeping privacy and intimacy. This way, the name of the project is based on the walls that form a square around the night functions, enclosing this way the bedroom area from the public, and yet keeping it opened to the exterior. The concept of the house is based on the enclosing with glass panels only, and with a minimum usage of internal walls.

The project was a dwelling duplex for two families, on a site with an existing dwelling that will be demolished. The proposed houses will be treated as one, having the same materials and exterior characteristics, but separated by a rated firewall. To respond to the urban and building local regulation, the layout of the houses is asymmetrical and in steps, so one house will have a bigger total surface area than the other.

02.Hero Children’s Museum

Proposed museum, Diploma project, Louisville, Kentucky, USA, tutors: prof.dr.arch. Dan Serban, drd.arch. Ana Mari Vesa, conf.dr.eng. Adrian Iordachescu

02.Hero museum is a children’s museum located in Louisville and was a direct request of the local authorities through multiple local development projects and international competition. Taking into consideration the location within the city – the educational district, and the fact that the architectural program is a new one in the city, this project represented a provocation.

The hero’s journey is the main theme of the museum and tries to teach children, and parents, teachers or tutors, that everyone can become a hero in their own way. The exhibition follows the hero’s steps of transformation, from a simple element to an extraordinary one, so, in the end, everyone can become a hero.

The architectural object is based on the concept of the child’s behavior, a very dynamic and fun, in a constant state of movement. The image that is created by the project is unique within the urban context, playful and dynamic, just like a child in an adult world. The museum is composed of curved slabs, the ground floor and the underground parking being the only straight floor slabs, suggesting that all that is above ground floor is unstable and floating.

The facades are treated like a hide and seek game, where the perforations appear and disappear in the construction. The functional scheme is based on the segregation of the functions based on different floors. This way, the ground floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions and public functions, whilst the upper floors are for permanent exhibitions, playgrounds, nursery, early childhood spaces, workshops and administration.

The functions are floating in space, combining the spaces dedicated for children with the spaces dedicated for adults and administration, offering full transparency. From mythological heroes like Hercules or Thor to international heroes like Tin Tin, Sailor Moon or Son Goku; from the wellknown Marvel heroes to literature heroes, the museum tries to offer a different experience with each space, discovering that every hero covers the same steps in becoming.

Tram Museum – The regeneration of the historic center Proposed museum, Academic project, Bucharest, Romania, tutors: prof.dr.arch. Dan Serban, drd.arch. Ana Maria Vesa, asist.drd.arch. Irina Florea

The main aim of the project is the revitalization and reintegration of a historic part of the city center, through a project that has a big urban and social impact in the area, whilst appealing to a historic element of the area. The tram circuit in the area dates from 1872, being the first tram circuit in the city that is still used today. Taking into consideration the existing empty lot in the area, as well as the historical importance and interesting history of the tram, as well as the fact that there isn’t a tram museum in Bucharest, the project proposes a tram museum as a form of urban revitalization. The purpose is to attract new visitors in that part of the historical city, conducting to the revitalization of the shops and public functions in the area.

The interior spaces proposed for the museum must offer the visitors a unique experience, so the project is composed of three instances: the past, the present and the future, incorporating the existing and functional tram rail into the circuit The museum is composed of two building blocks and the functional tram rails, each corresponding to a period. This way, the bigger building accommodates the past of the tram, with permanent exhibitions of old trams, the present is represented by the actual tram rails, where everyone can see the current state of the trams, and the smaller building represents the future, with temporary exhibitions and new exposed tram prototypes, also workshops and public spaces.

SKETCH

Sketching comes as a natural part of designing and it’s an important aspect of my professional life. Most of the projects have started from a single sketch and evolved to full detailed architectural objects.
