Atualmente és Um Lugar ao Sol, desfrutando da sua tenra idade de 20 anos. Dentro do seu caloroso abraço, apresento esta exposição onde Eu grito e declaro:
Afaste-se da mentalidade da idade das trevas e desfrute da idade da luz jovem e tenra de Timor-Leste. A todos os líderes, por favor, permitam que as gerações mais novas cooperem e trabalhem de forma a criar consciência, promover e divulgar a identidade de Timor-Leste no exterior. Partilho e peço:
Nós conseguimos! Esta Vitória pertence a todos nós. Esta Independência é para todos os Timorenses que vagueiam pelo mundo. Penso e pergunto: Onde está a minha independência? Se é “A Nossa Vitória, A Nossa Independência”, então porque é que ainda não posso voltar ao meu local de nascimento, onde o meu cordão umbilical e o dos meus familiares estão enterrados?
Que se procure sempre apreciar e facilitar a interação que promova a comunicação e a compreensão cultural, tanto a nível nacional como internacional. Estas atividades ajudarão a cultivar a compreensão, impulsionando assim a paz, a estabilidade social e a diversidade cultural na nossa sociedade global. Isto é fundamental em tempos e acontecimentos como o 20º Aniversário de Timor-Leste, quando se deve recordar o passado, abordar o presente e recriar o futuro.
Examino e digo: Deste Lugar ao Sol, precisamos abrir os olhos e permitir que a luz nos ajude a ver com clareza, dignidade e orgulho, quem realmente somos.

Step away from the dark ages mentality and enjoy Timor-Leste’s young and tender age.
Congratulations Dear Mother Earth. You are my Place in the Sun.
To all in the leadership, please allow the younger generation to cooperate and work in order to create awareness, promote and divulge TimorLeste’s identity abroad.
In the past you faced dark ages. Currently you are A Place in the Sun, enjoying your tender age of 20 years. Within your warm embrace I present this exhibition where I shout and declare: We did it! This Victory belongs to us all. This Independence is for all Timorese that roam around the globe. I reflect upon and ask: Where is my independence? If it is “Our Victory, Our Independence”, then why am I still not able to return to my place of birth where my family members’ umbilical cord and mine are buried?
I share and state: One must always seek to appreciate and facilitate interaction that promotes communication and cultural understanding, both on a national and international level. Such activities will help to cultivate understanding, thus prompting peace, social stability, and cultural diversity within our global society. This is fundamental in times and events such as the 20th Anniversary of TimorLeste, when one must remember the past, address the present and recreate the future.
I examine and say: Within this Place in the Sun, we need to open our eyes and allow the light to help us see with clarity, dignity, and pride who we really are.

Maria Madeira moris iha aldeia Glenu, rejiaun Ermera, iha Timor-Leste. Iha tinan 1976, durante invazaun indonézia, Forsa Aérea Portugeza evakua tiha husi Timor-Leste, no nia hela durante tempu naruk husi tinan ualu tuir mai iha kampu refujiadu Cruz Vermelha nian ida iha arredór Lisboa, Portugál. Maria Madeira nasceu na aldeia de Gleno, na região de Ermera, em Timor-Leste. Em 1976, durante a invasão indonésia, a Força Aérea Portuguesa evacuou-a de Timor-Leste, tendo passado a maior parte dos oito anos seguintes num campo de refugiados da Cruz Vermelha nos arredores de Lisboa, em Portugal. Em Agosto de 1983, migrou com sua família para a Austrália.

Ao longo dos anos, obteve diversas qualificações académicas. Formou-se em Artes Visuais (B.A. Fine Arts) pela Curtin University em 1991 e dois anos depois, recebeu um Diploma de Graduação em Educação (Major in Art) pela mesma universidade. Em 1996, obteve seu segundo diploma em Ciência Política (B.A.) pela Universidade de Murdoch. Em 2019, doutourou-se (Doctor of Philosophy – Art) na Curtin University.
Maria Madeira was born in the village of Gleno in the Ermera region of Timor-Leste. The Portuguese Air Force evacuated her from Timor in 1976 during the Indonesian invasion. She spent most of the following eight years in a refugee camp run by the Red Cross on the outskirts of Lisbon in Portugal. She migrated with her family to Australia in August 1983. Over the years, she obtained several academic qualifications. She graduated with a B.A. Fine Arts (Visual Arts) Degree from Curtin University in 1991. Two years later she received a Graduate Diploma of Education (Major in Art) from the same university. In 1996, she obtained her second degree, a B.A. in Political Science from Murdoch University. In 2019, she finally obtained a postgraduate (Doctor of Philosophy – Art) from Curtin University in Australia.

Entre 2000 e 2004 regressou a TimorLeste para viver e desempenhar o seu papel na recuperação, reconstrução e desenvolvimento do seu amado país e da mais nova nação da Ásia. Atualmente, ela vive em Perth, na Austrália, com o seu companheiro e filho.

O seu trabalho artístico foi já apresentado em mais de 30 exposições internacionais na Austrália, em Portugal, no Brasil, em Macau, na Indonésia e em Timor-Leste. Na pintura, escultura, desenho, colagem e instalação, Maria utiliza nas suas obras uma ampla variedade técnicas e materiais, onde estão patentes as suas raízes.

Uma das suas principais preocupações como artista, educadora artística e conselheira cultural é transmitir a cultura e as tradições de Timor-Leste a outras sociedades – e vice-versa. Ela acredita que a arte e a cultura são o espírito e a alma de uma nação, constituindo um veículo através do qual as gerações futuras podem aprender a apreciar a beleza e a força de sua própria cultura para, dessa forma, descobrirem quem são no mundo.
Between 1996 and 2000, she worked in Western Australia as a high school art teacher, visual artist and cultural advisor for several arts and cultural organisations. Between the 2000 and 2004, she returned to Timor-Leste to live and play her part in the recovery, rebuilding and development of her beloved country and the newest nation in Asia. She currently lives in Perth with her partner and son. Maria has produced artwork in a wide range of media, from painting to sculpture, drawing, mixed media collage and installation work. Her work has been shown in over 30 international exhibitions across Australia, Portugal, Brazil, Macau, Indonesia and Timor-Leste. One of her main concerns as an artist, arts educator and cultural adviser is to convey TimorLeste’s culture and traditions to other societies— and vice-versa. It is her strong belief that art and culture are the spirit and soul of a nation, and is a vehicle through which future generations can learn to appreciate the beauty and strength of their own culture—and, in this way, discover who they are in the world.
