Back from another amazing easa and refueld with new enthusiasm provided by all you easians, we’re at work again for the next easa event, the INCM009 Liechtenstein. This is the first issue of the Newsletter “RÄGASCHIARM” which will keep you up to date and help you survive the post-easa-blues. We will send it to each NC and publish it on the blog easa.tk on a regular base. We need your support, your enthusiasm and your spirit to make this INCM what we want it to be! COMMUNICATION First of all, we need one NC of each country to send us name and mail of: -NCs during Italy -future NCs (2): In order to keep our communication less messy we’d like to ask you to avoid any email or facebook correspondence concerning INCM-matters with any organizer. Do ONLY send e-mails to organizer@incm009.li please use clear headers like the following ones: BASIC INFO VISA APPLICATION FORM POSTER COMPETITION ESSAY COMPETITION LOVE LETTER “XL, L, M, S, FL” description->incm009.li Quantity: There is only ONE poster per country requested and accepted. Urgency: Sending a poster in time is the only way your country can participate in the INCM. Quality: A1, color if you like. be aware that your poster will be exhibited as a picture with 40 others in a art museum. It should speak for itself, avoid (the need of) explanation texts! Be also aware that you are representing your country in a exhibition that might travel afterwards, in a book that will be sent all over europe. Take it seriously! Legally: By the end of today we will be providing some pictures, plans and data on incm009.li . This is material that you might or might not use. However it is all licence-free and all aditional material you use should be as well in order that we can publish it!
Jury: The jury will consider the following parameters: -concept: be creative and go further than we did with our example-poster! -recognizability of both countries -composition and visual representation -personal mysterious taste of the prince of Liechtenstein DEADLINE: 10. september Send us: -PDF of the poster -the original Photoshop/illustrater/ Cad/whatever-file. We got the opportunity to do a whole issue of the little “Al magazine” of the University of Liechtenstein. We decided to make an issue that discusses the easa-network on one hand and the underlying theme of this years INCM “the future of the profession of architecture” on the other hand. We will use the competition entries for this, wherefore we needed to change the deadline. There is still plenty of time left! Like this we will be able to send every NC a few issues of the magazine prior to the event! The participation of as many people of each country as possible is not only important for you (->check quota!) but for the success of the INCM in general. please show some spirit, support us! 42 days from now, you will enter the world of INCM009. Through snowstorms or sunshine - in october you can get anything here. By then, incredible artwork from all over europe will be ready to enrich the Kunstmuseum. A group of easians will be eager to show the strategy to get the easa-homepage done by the end of the INCM. Tonnes of essays will be written, some of them already published in a magazine. Loads of ideas of what easa is and where easa should go will be waiting to be discussed and presented. We’re really looking forward to experience this world with you!

AL-MAGAZINE! The next Rägaschiarm will be a printed version, sent to your home along with a copy of the “AL-Magazine” of the university of Liechtenstein. This months issue will be about easa, the workshop and will contain some of the most inspiring essays of yours! The expectations of the school are high and they doubled the number of copies to 3’000. It will be sent to students, NCs, professors and architects all over Europe! FINAL REPORT! The core of this years’ INCMs Final Report is focused on the future of easa and in relation to that, the future of the profession of architecture. We will create a document based on the material we gather through the INCM that is not meant for easians only. We will spread
300 copies to NCs, professors, architects and schools of architecture. We have the extraordinary circumstances to gather among the most ambitious students of architecture at one spot. There is an unique variety of 40 Nations and even more schools of architecture. Most of the students are still at a stage in their career where they can dream, set direction to their own developement, have pure ideas of what architecture could or should be, largly untouched by the rough and often desillusionating conditions of ‘reality’. We will use this occasion to take a sample of the thinking of tomorrows architects of Europe. All Posters and the best essays will be included! KUNSTMUSEUM! Your “XL ,L, M, S, FL” -artwork will be presented in the Liechtenstein national gallery, which is along with Bregenz and Chur one of the main art museums of the region. The museum was built 9 years ago by Morger, Degelo and Kerez, well-known swiss architects, and is a good example of the mythical swiss magic box: External shape simplicity and interior great complexicity, in this case structural and compositive. In this very simple and very shiny hand-carved box, Gaugin, Malevitch, Klee, Waarhol, Beuys, the Prince collection and the “XL, L, M, S, FL”- posters were and will be exhibited!

It is not yet 100% confirmed that they manage to come, but they are trying hard. Only one more country, Estonia, to be found (we’re working on that as well!) and easa would finally contain all nations of europe! Amazing! EASA011 Spain After 29 years in the organization, Spain has decided it is time to propose EASA in one of the most southwestern parts of Europe. deCOASTruction wills to establish a strong relation between site and theme, that is, between the coast and the deconstruction the Spanish shoreline has experienced over the last decades due to the fast speculative development. People from Spain and all over the World caused this process and now students of architecture from all over Europe will have the chance first-hand of providing creative inputs to combat this phenomenon.”
EASA011 Romania “We are proud of being part of a generation that has been evolving so much in such few decades. The help of CAD softwares from the last years has been a bless to architecture all over the world. The sizes of our projects increased, the structures are getting “harder, better, faster, stronger” each day and the mentality of architects is changing towards a different view. All these being part of our future life, we now say “f**k that s**t!” and let’s go back to the roots for a while! What we are proposing for 2011 is a no-technology Easa on the Black Sea coast line. Let’s give up computers and power tools for a while and see how we can manage to make something almost out of nothing! We are going to focus on the first purpose of architecture, that of a shelter. Let’s get out of the time context and create an easa village to see how a small scale society can evolve in a small time scale without the modern resources. Berlin once was a flourishing metropolis with more than 4 million habitants competing with others such as London and Paris. With the seperation of the country Berlin lost its importance within Europe. Since the unification the city experienced a constant fluctuation of habitants keeping its size to 3.5 million and leaving a lot of space for new ideas. It now looks for a new identity in the 21st century. Germany wants to invite you to its capital in 2010 to experience its current development.
INCM010 Copenhagen, Denmark The theme is ’community’. From the individual sense of belonging to a bigger regional perspective. An important current issue within urban planning and many other fields. We will use the oppertunity of INCM to set the EASA-experience in relation to examples of community in Copenhagen and Malmö – the new Øresundsregion. INCM will be located on the edge between city and suburbia. A former school, a beautiful modernist building, looking for a new function. During the INCM we want to examine EASA based on this context, and strengthen the notion and structure of this unique architectural community. We want INCM010 to be an intimate community where everyone contributes to the event. INCM010 Ohrid, Macedonia After the fabulous SESAM006 experience, we would like to take the EASA community out east once again. We offer an unforgettable Balkan train trip to Bitola, after to Ohrid where the INCM will take place. Ohrid is located in the southwestern part of Macedonia and it is unique for having 365 churches, one for each day of the year. It is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, tourism is predominant. The city of Ohrid lays on the shores of Lake Ohrid which straddles the mountainous border between the southwestern Republic of Macedonia and eastern Albania. It is one of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes, today protected by UNESCO. In the middle of the INCM010 we plan an excursion to eastern Macedonia, where there will be a hiking trip to famous old monasteries. Right after we will see some of the old Ottoman architecture to offer a diverse cultural experience. Macedonia, the heart of the Balkans (Turkish: Bal= honey, Kan= blood), is expecting you for a great EASA experience of mixed culture, architecture and religion. We hope to get to host all of you our friends, because we are your friends!

Things are going wild. But still, all in all, they are heading in the right direction with the INCM009. Well, it’s about time now...because, you know, in one or two weeks from now, we’ll already know our travel-destination for the autumn 2010 and summer 2011! Some people will realize that they were just bidding for a mountain of unpayed work. And they got it and are even grateful for that. These people must be either somehow crazy or architects!? or a combination of both with lots of love. “easians”, they say, is the name for that. easians!
MORE THAN JUST ARCHITECTS We don’t want to be romantic (or do we?), but easa is one of the better things that crossed our way, ever. For us it’s somehow what many society-designers wanted, what always failed in reality. It’s people coming together from many countries. Strongly focused on the future, enough, to leave history and ideologies behind. Being proactive, instead of nostalgic or bitter. Easa happened throughout the last 3 decades. Three decades that saw wars and conflicts in many parts of europe. But easa happened summer after summer and people from all countries came and worked together. Society-designers failed, and house-designers succeeded? Maybe because there is not much of a serious theory, only positive and creative people giving their best. The theoretical idea of easa is not realistic. But easa doesn’t care. It is. Easy to feel but difficult to describe. MORE THAN JUST A NCMEETING Picture it: 120 ambitious and bright students of architecture from almost 40 countries on one spot. These are extraordinary circumstances. This is a ingenious potential. We already saw it with the poster-competition. The thing is not, that we got 40 posters and therefore we will have some really good ones. The thing is, that those 40 posters together are amazing. Just the fact that 40 heads from 40 countries interpreted a task their way, shown in the same room. Same thing with the essays. And the same will work for the workshop “the future of the profession of architecture”. But while the posters and essays were written without an interchange of ideas, the workshop will be a big exchange, some kind of massive brainstorm-cloud.
MORE THAN JUST A WORKSHOP At first sight, the workshop sets the bar a bit high - a bit too high actually. The title would be pretty naive, if it was announcing an answer. It is however only announcing a theme, for which there is no universal answer. It is something we can never reach, but are obsessed with - our future. Something we can’t describe accurately as a theory, only influence it, by thinking about what we want and then taking action. Actually a bit like easa. We are honestly very curious about the workshop, spent lots of time thinking about how to conduct it, how to break the big theme in palatable pieces. While developing the workshop, we often lost ourselves in long discussions about architecture, creativity and where we want to go ourselves. As nice as that was, we realized that a strong structure is needed, in order to have a most inspiring workshop-day. We’ll start by looking at the status quo. What approaches to architecture are there? Where do architects set themeselfes in society and how do they work? We’ll go on with a look at structures beyond the profession of architecture (Military, Wikipedia, TED-talks and more) and will try to transform them into a architectural practice: what do you get from that? Then we’ll step into the future and become proactive, developing our own idea of where to go. We invited all students of easa and all students of the HSL and will be around 200-300 people in total. Many of you will moderate a small group of students. Those already got additional information and inputs by mail. MORE THAN JUST CHAOS We ask a lot from you, we only assume your enthusiasm and ambitions. It’s not confirmed by you, just
felt by us. It’s a risk and it may end up at the border of chaos, but a creative and productive one. And oh, we have such a love for productive chaos! Why do we do this? Because we believe in easa. That you can do something like this with easa. That this experiment will strenghten easa. Where, when and with whome could this workshop be done, if not here and now and with you? And we believe that all your exceptional minds, together in one room, will create something great. And everyone shall leave that very same room enriched and inspired. MORE THAN JUST A FINAL REPORT We have your posters, essays, the results of the workshop, the symposium and 10 days of easians in photos, videos, texts, Rägaschiarms and in our minds. All this together is more than a statement on the future of our profession, it’s more than a document about an INCM, back in the early 21st century - this is easa for us. Our baby. Our little utopia. And we will treat it carefully. We will edit a book, your book! It shall inspire people that have never been to easa before, people that are not even architects. This is the final Newsletter before the event starting on the 16th of October, which means that we are getting really close. ahhh! When You get this, you are already packing your favourite Pullovers, good shoes and warm clothings, prepared for the possible snow, but hopefully also for lots of sunshine. In the mountains, it is not easy to predict the weather. We have everything ready for you and there is nothing else, what would be more important to us, but making this INCM009 a great experience for everyone.

After INCM009 in Liechtenstein, we are taking you to a Swisstrip to Graubunden (Grisons), where you will spend a free day in Chur, in the capital of Graubunden the oldest city of Switzerland in the largest canton in the universe. On the way to the thermal baths in Vals, we will stop by the most amazing pieces of architecture built in the swiss alps, there where nature really would like to take over the area again. We will look at architecture by Peter Zumthor, Valerio Olgiati, Gion. A. Caminda, Bearth and Deplazes, Iseppi & Kurath and Werner Schmidt, to the Bridges build by Engineer Jürg Conzett in the Viamala Gorge during the Excursion. WORKSHOP GUIDE WITH NO B.S. EASA Documents (Chiara) Buzzword: guide and pack This workshop seems pretty easy as the most important guides and packs are already finished to a high standard. Creating a new type of guide could be hard enough work. But how great would it be to have a guide on, for example “chat up techniques at easa” Work factor: 3/10. It’s just reading stuff and saying its okay.

CODE BREAKER In case anyone hasn’t noticed the internet code is not what I personally would describe as a word. But if you were to think that the organisers didn’t bother to change the default code you would be wrong. It turns out that TOERKAREBEL is actually the national food of Liechtenstein. Made up of a fine combination of corn salt and milk, it’s apparently not very good and only enjoyed by the native people of Liechtenstein. SKIWATER That’s right for only a meagre 9 tokens you can get a fantastic pink drink that is guaranteed to make you a winter sports pro. Get some at the bar now and hope for snow.

DAMAGE BAR: DAMAGING PEOPLES WALLETS. By Joseph Frame and Julie Bart TThe rumors had been circulating all evening, that the local bar was one of the hottest joints in town, full of trendy kids with fantastic haircuts. With Luis expertly shepparding people in its general direction (although some managed to get lost following a straight line) there was a palpable sense of excitement in the cold air. On arriving at Damage Bar one can safely assume that most guests were struck by the interesting choice of decor, which can be summed up quite succinctly by the phrase ‘Gay Biker Bar’. The centre peace of a mirrored D with artfully painted cracks surrounding it was truly a work of a genius, with the low mood lighting accentuating the plumes of cigarette smoke. Once the shock of entering had been overcome people could proceed with the serious business of having a few drinks. Yvonne was possibly the most enthusiastic with regards to this task, once again displaying the dedication and organizational skill which she has applied to organizing this wonderful INCM. Most of the clientele opted for the local tipple; Liechensteiner Brauhaus, quite an expensive yet tasty beer, with Alex Maxwell showing his appreciation of it by throwing 3 pints of it onto the floor. For future reference people, telling the barman that you dropped three pints will earn you one free replacement, if only because the barman thinks you are a retard and wants you to leave him alone. The entertainment provided was absolutely top notch, including the Worlds Strongest Man featuring a Sam Patterson look alike, which got a few of ladies a tad hot under the collar. Some of the boys took part in a complicated game of ‘Try and Hit the Bullseye’, which no one managed to do, although there were reports of Ville getting closest. Trying to avoid the lecherous attentions of some of the local men was also another past time for a select few EASA ladies. Many
agree that the most entertaining local was the man asleep on a table. The music was of the classic rock/metal persuasion, and a few devils horns were spotted waving through the air to the sound of Alice Cooper’s Poison, so it would appear that a few EASIANS are closet metallers. So after whiling away a few hours in the charming environs of Damage Bar and spending far too much money on beer, Pavle and Giom took the initiative of leading people back to the after party. So with stolen beer glasses in hands the convoy of people wended their way home, encountering a sober Christoph Holz and a drunk Jeanne Wood en route. Few people joined the ‘car park-Drum n’bass party’ coming from Alex Maxwell’s GB chav black car (well pimped by Patrick) teaching the locals how to party UK council estate style. Being shut down after 30 min, the party moved to the basement, crashing on the sumptuous recycled cushions, shaving hairy men faces, enjoying the red drink SKIWATER. Giom made his own party falling down behind the bar, and unfortunatly hurting himself, but those who witnessed it confirmed that it was a very graceful fall. He is obviously a professional. Julie had too much to drink but handled it with dignity. So to sum up, the first event was a rousing success, drinks were drunk, fun was had, and everyone is very happy to be here in charming and petite Liechtenstein, and if you plan to return to Damage Bar make sure your air guitar skills are up to scratch.

MINUTES Today’s meeting was to discuss the role of an NC, their duties and responsibilities. Neal Patterson opened the meeting by introducing the topic in his usual charismatic manner. Participants were split into five groups with a mix of experienced and new NC’s to discuss this and bring their conclusions to the group. Group 1 NC should be a tool for the organizers. They are a link between participants and organisers Make sure that his/her country does not get lost NC’s and participants should do more duties Process of selection is different in each country Organisers should not take advantage of NC’s
Group 2 NC should do pre-EASA work - informing participants of EASA, what to expect and what is expected of them through posters, giving presentations, emails Keep participants informed of EASA news, Promote EASA for tutors seperately, Ensure all payments etc. are on time and in full Onsite NC’s are mainly responsible that their participants complete their duties. Find a good group of participants, meet them before face to face, get team players. Group 3 Promote EASA clearly, make sure everyone knows that it is not a holiday. Give a personal presentation ensure a good balance of participants
Group 4 NC’s should be a human link, not just emails Be efficient in the information they give Anticipate problems such as transport or event problems and try to solve them before transferring this to the organisers. Try to make participants understand the EASA community and spirit Come to INCM if possible Act as a link between organisers and participants during event Encourage participants to be responsible and pro-active Choose a young and enthusiastic NC to take over when your time is over Group 5 Try to get new people to come the event Seek sponsorship fro their own participants and for overall EASA Meet with participants before the event

Day Two of this years INCM will definitly be a night to remember. After discussing the role of the NC within the Network and all its elements, the EASA History Night was a wonderfull moment, but as usual, we cannot describe it with words. We were just sitting there, thinking, wow-and we are part of this wonderfull idea of a Network for european architecture students, that has been living on since almost 30 Years? COOL! One of the Founders of the Liverpool Workshops, Geoff Haslam was visiting us in Liechtenstein. He has been texting Richard Murphy and told us, that Richard is a bid jealous for not being here with us. Next time we want both!
“EASA lives on” Geoff Haslam Last night the male Easian population retreated into the shadows feeling small as two easian legends had the females of Easa on the edges of their increasingly damp seats. Even as a red blooded hetrosexual male i cannot profess to being impervious to the charms and linguistic dexterity of these two substantial chapters in Easa‘s history. >All aboard the love train I will begin this column with the presentation of Morten (the magnificent) Gehl and EASA ‚97 also known as the train EASA. This phenomenal architectural journey was a demonstration in just how boundless and without limits EASA really can be. The room sat, slack jawed as we were smoothly led through a slick presentation that clearly (apart from a bizarre metaphor about an eggy moon) explained how a fantastically ambitious idea became a fantastically ambitious reality. After the independently formidable feat of raising a budget $1,000,000, we learnt how during
the train ride to paradise the ‚97 team managed to fix two locomotive engines and a brake system. Intimidated? fear not! This moving assembly is inspiration for the future EASAs if we IMPROVISE and ADAPT.

The conclusion of the first meeting on Saturday 17th October centred on the role of the NC, their responsibilities before EASA and how they can help the organisers on site. NCs should take a more active role during EASA. They could arrive a day or two early to help set up and get familiar with the site. An introduction to the event should be given to them so they will have more information for their participants and can take more responsibility. This will flatten the hierarchy within the event and take pressure off the organisers. NCs should schedule a country meeting after the NC meetings to keep participants informed. NCs should promote the idea of being a tutor within their country as well. They should have enough information to inform them for their proposal. If the proposal is accepted then the responsibility is transferred to the organisers. To help NCs a new improved NC guide is being written by the documentation group and will include their responsibilities and tips on how to promote EASA and get sponsorship.
They also informed us that they had a budget of 103.000 euro, which is less than half of the previous budgets.
SESAM009 Rome presentation: The organizing team presented SESAM009 in Rome. They thanked their sponsors and the participants. They also presented their budget which had a minor profit thanks to a lot of help from sponsors. EASA009, Italy presentation The organizers of EASA009 explained that the most important things you need when organizing an EASA is: 1. A good team 2. Written contracts and signatures from sponsors and fundings 3. A lot of time and energy to dedicate to the profit. Problems: 1. Italy had a lot of sponsors bailing on them in the last minute. 2. The organising team was spread all over Italy which made it very
EASA010 Manchester presentation Information: dates: 31th of july to 15th of august: www.easauk.net Theme: „Identity“ The chosen theme is identity because it is a broad term, but also a term that is hard to describe and define. Manchester wants to interact more with the surroundings of the EASA camp and has therefore chosen to place the EASA010 in a city and spread out the camp to different locations in the city. There will be one or two main centres as an infopoint and lounge and a main powertool and workshop space. The workshops will take place around the city and force it‘s participants to interact more with the city and move around in it. Some of the ways the Manchester team will experiment with the theme „Identity“ can for instance be experiments with the nationalities of the participating countries. A suggestion could be, that the nationalities have to swap identities on national evening and investigate and present a foreign country. This can be done in a number of ways, but the aim is to force the countries to interact and to learn more about each others cultures. Excursion destination: It is also debated at the moment whether or not the excursion of EASA010 should go all the way to Liverpool or to a mill at the countryside nearby. Number of participants: EASA010 can host up to 500 participants. Workshops: The first tutorpack was presented. This
tutorpack is only the first edition and will change and improve over the next six months. The workshops will be divided into theoretical and practical workshops as seen at previous EASA‘s. Tutors will probably pay half of the participant‘s fee which created a debate but ended up with the agreement that it is up to the organizers. Umbrella and Small interventions: EASA010 want to redefine and develop veteran workshops as Umbrella and small interventions. The goal is to allow these workshops to be represented every year but also allow them to change and grow. A way to do that could be to auction them away. Meaning that people can apply/win the job as tutors in these workshop by proposing interesting ideas and goals of how to run the workshop. This will allow the workshop not to die or be run by the same group of Easians year after year. Lectures: Manchester would prefer if more participants participate in the debates and lectures and suggest to encourage participants to do small lectures about a topic of their choice that is relevant for the location, site, workshop or profession. Questions and comments from NC‘s Security: concerns about the security of EASA when the event is spread out over a large area and the students have to walk around the city at all times in the day. the organizers promise to protect the campsites and workshops from theft but want participants to be responsible for themselves when they move around in the city. The theme: It was suggested that the organizers of EASA010 clarify the theme more to provide a greater understanding of the theme and better workshops. This will be done as the tutorpack evolves.
The Swedish magazine called „IDENTITY“ Kajsa from Sweden made the NC‘s aware of a Swedish magazine called Identity that is being published this fall. She would really encourage people to write contributions to this magazine, especially the organizers of EASA010. Suggested Improvements from the NC‘s: A library close to or in the lounge created by the participants. It could consist of magazines etc. brought from everyone‘s home country and field of architecture to EASA010. An improved information system to inform the participants about the activities of the workshops in the city. This could be a mobile phone chain or by filming the activities in the workshops and project the film on screens in the lounge. This would allow the participants to know when ever something interesting was going on in a workshop and encourage the participants to move and attend the event. It is also very essential that the participants know where the workshops are located in the city for instance on a map and allowing accessible conditions between the main camps and the workshops so that the workshops will be places in a reasonable walking distance from the main camps. Bustickets or similar is given to the participant in order to make the process of transportation as smooth as possible between the activities. Participants should be involved in EASA earlier in the process. They could be given small tasks and information before attending EASA. The workshop fair-system There was also a common interest in redefining and changing the structure of the workshops-introduction-fair to ensure that the participants get one of their workshop-top priorities. This should be done through a workshopintroduction-presentation as well as using priority notes that the participants fill out and hands to the organisers. This should lower the stress and
confusion of the participants due to the present non-functional workshop-fair and sign-up sheets system.. EASA007 in Greece was mentioned as a good example of a functional workshop-fair system. Greece started the workshop fair by having all the workshop present their workshop in a small presentation. Thereafter the workshop answered questions at their workshop table. In the end the participants handed in a note with the workshop-priority of their choice to the organizers. By using this method everyone got a fair chance getting the workshop they wanted without fighting over the signup-sheet. If this system need further adjustment a note with several priorities will allow the participants to get one of their top priorities and avoid the situation where participants are forced into workshops where they find no interest and therefore choose either to skip the workshop or show a low level of enthusiasm and participation. Former organizers pointed out that it was of great importance that the participants committed to the workshops and stayed there for the whole time to create the best outcome, interaction and group work in the workshop. Discussion about fees and payment roups. The organizers of EASA010 in Manchester suggested to minimize the number of payment groups from 5 to 3. This would be done by combining group 2 and 3 and group 4 and 5. This would mean that group 1: pay 100% of the fee group (2-3): pays 60% of the fee group (4-5) pays 30% of the fee. This suggestion caused a lot of debate and at the end it was decided that the organizers of Manchester EASA010 wont change the groups. The idea came up to get team UK to make a suggestion of the fees and the division of the countries in the five groups and present it to the NC‘s. Due to the amount of work and the doubt of being essential it was declined. The countries of group 5 made the NC‘s aware of the big prob-
lems associated with the VISA application process in their countries and they would really encourage the organizers to take this issue seriously and maybe provide some financial support as well as free VISA support. The travel issues such as costs and distance should also be taken into consideration when the group-division is made by organizers of future EASA‘s. The current participant 270 euro fee was set in Ireland and kept since in Italy and now in Manchester. This price made a little debate because it was decided in Moscow that the price should be 240 euros and kept on that level for a couple of years. In the end it was decided that the price could stay on 270 euros due to the increase in food prices and inflation in Europe. Tutor fees. The tutor fee was up for debate. There was a lot of different opinions on whether or not the tutors should be paying full or half of their participant fee. In the end it was decided that it should be up to the organizers of EASA‘s to decide the prices for the tutors based on the organizers wishes and financial situation. The relationship between the organizers and NC‘s. It was decided that the NC‘s should help the organizers as much as possible with fundraising as well as the updating of the tutorpack. We were in the end all invited to a big brainstorm with the organizers of EASA010 after dinner so we could all contribute to the creation of a super cool EASA010. The meeting was held when these minutes went into the press. The topic of fundraising should be brought up again later that week parallel to the work that has been done in the document group concerning sponsorship-gaining from the NC‘s.

“XL, L, M, S, FL� *After The lectures, the organizers had prepared a surprise. Each country was lured into the dark sexy cloakroom. Anyone trying to sneak in was well and truly faced, ask Jeannestoff. Once inside, confused people were force fed skank booze (unless your nation is after the letter U in the alphabet) and given an original INCM009 hoody (american apparrell too! oh la la). Your letter on your hoody represents the size of your country, with Russia being the only XL going, the organizers obviously forgetting that the sun never sets on the British Empire. Upping the UK quota to include the overseas territories will be discussed at length soon. The night continued on with Betty Swollocks (Fr) making many appearences thanks to the newly aquired garments. The Rune (Dk) shaped hole on the dance floor was well and truly filled by a dark and mysterious creature of night.
Now with everyone in the hostel wearing the same hoody, we look like a bunch of mentalists in a cult. Theres is a mass suicide meeting at the info point at 02:00. Bring three empty beer bottles, two aspirins, and a bottle of rum , and expect to get wet in the crop fields. *The 2nd Surprise was: The Presentation of the Final report and the exhibition of EASA007 in Greece! We celebrated this with all of them with a glas of Wine!

EASA 2011 SPAIN!!!!! So after a intense day of serious discussions, sitting inside and finally an outcome. We are all looking forward to a lovely walk through the scenic Liechtenstein countryside in order to work up an appetite for the fondue this evening. The walking tours were a big success and we all enjoyed last nights bbq. Keep up the good work organisers cause so far it’s a 10/10.
As we all know the bidding yesterday was a long and arduous process, that finally reached a consensus after 10 hours of discussing. Everybody was there so it seems slightly redundant to repeat what was said. Luis and Elena did an excellent job as moderators. Elena was especially good at telling people to stop talking which was great. It is generally felt that the debates brought up some real issues, which is nessary in an organiseation like this, but instead of talking about them I will just mention the stupid things.
Possibly the strangest comment was made that it was good that the Spanish team was mainly male so they couldn’t get pregnant. Alkistis would like to point out that the Greek team which was almost exclsivly girls managed to avoid getting pregnant in the run up to Elefsina. The bbq was a welcome respite and the beer helped grease the wheels of conversation. Walkingtours in Liechtenstein Lecture
Before the Walking Tours there was a Lecture by Xavier Calderón, Architect Urbanist, Guest Professor, Hochschule Liechtenstein, (MSAAD Columbia University N.Y./ UIA Mexico) explaining the problems Liechtenstein has and what his students have approached for solving the problems in a small land with a great need for individuality. Even if Liechtenstein is surrounded by the alps and all seems wonderfully nice, he was saying that a small country, which has no real city, needs much more infrastructure than a city. So the main problem is that it is not economical and not ecological at all. If you don’t have a car in FL you are lost…cause you wont get anywhere even if Liechtenstein is only 160 km2 and therefore is one of the smallest Countries in Europe. This is why the Walkingtours turned out more as Driving-tours around Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Austria, since the Neigbour-Countries are also part of the region we are in right now. Most of them used a car or minibus to get to place, and back to the hostel- It started like this…Luis stood in the middle of the room and started to call random names. Pandemonium was created. People running up and down, putting on clothes, getting their cameras, looking for their groups. And we finally set off. Many different tours, many different stories. >Stories from participants Vaduz The thing about my ‘walking tour’, there wasn’t much of walking.----------, a landscape architect gave us a ride to the center of Vaduz to show and explain us the metamorphosis Liechtenstein has been going through. There were big squares, wide pedestrian ways, big buildings but no one using them. It was very interesting to hear the story of an agriculture society with strong traditions turning into ‘urban’
in no time and still trying to adapt itself to it. After a nice talk about the change of the country and the affects of the change in architecture and how it’s actually not working, we found ourselves a cozy café and had some drinks. *anonymous With Ingrid and George
Ingrid and George from Liechtenstein took us to the trip called: having three beers in three countries during two hours. First stop in Werdenberg (Switzerland) visiting the smallest town in the world, which has about 90 inhabitants so after all there live less citizens than in the youth hostel at the moment. Went up to the castle and saw Pipilotti installations. The second stop in Feldkirch (Austria) in front of the prison and prisoners waving us. Took a beer in a town café, where you can have a drink and buy a chair that you sat on or a toilet paper installation you find in the bathroom. The last stop was a restaurant in Lichtenstein, where we tried a national meal “toerkarabel” consisting of specific Lichtenstein pasta, a mixture of a lot of different kinds of cheese, fried onions and warm mashed apples… it was good, especially we all have missed breakfast. We spend there a lot of great time telling George and Ingrid what INCM and EASA is all about (they were quite surprised- Luis told that it all is very serious stuff when he asked them to make a tour), showing each other our national passports and driving licenses. One gossip from the tour about Liechtenstein- you have to have not so much only one million Switzerland franks if you want to open an account in the
bank of Liechtenstein prince.We had a wonderful time. Thank you! *Julija Smallest City in Europe Yesterday we were in the smallest city in Europe called “Werdenberg”. In the middle Ages a large part of the Rhine Valley between Lake Constance and Sargans was controlled by the Counts of Bregenz. Werdenberg Castle was probably built around 1230 by one of their descendants Count Rudolf I of Montfort. The little town at the foot of the fortress is first mentioned in documentary sources in 1289. The inhabitants of Werdenberg received the status of citizens. In 1478 they were given a certain degree of independence, which was proclaimed in the construction of a town hall.
In 1803, the territory was transferred to the newly- founded Canton of St. Gallen Possesion of the Castle itself was retained by Glarus until 1810. In 1835 it became the private residence of the Hilty Family, which had lived in Werdenberg for centuries. In 1956, Frieda Hilty, the castle’s last private owner, donated the castle to the Canton of St.Gallen, which opened it to the public. And then we get a hot chocolate! *Laura

Malevich‘s composition «The Black Square» acquired the volume and became a cube faced with plates of black stone and… Attention! Polished by hand!!!! In a museum hall the atmosphere of calmness and peace was spread, the people were sipping the coffee and the kids were playing. After the museum we visited the brother of artist, the lawyer. The input in a new part of the house began with the lift which roof was covered with 70 ton solid stone plate! As this cobble-stone has been established there, for us remains a riddle. The lift leads to the huge concrete hall with graffiti on the walls. What do you think, why does the owner need such big space under the ground? There is nothing!!!He told that he has constructed the bunker, the third by size in Liechtenstein. *Natasha

So after a fun filled traditional evening we managed to shrug off the cabin fever of the previous nights that lead to some questionable behaviour. So with a fantastic walk along the side of a snow covered mountain we find ourselves back to business. The good news is that Yvonne is okay and was last seen relaxing and smiling in a bed with Joe Frame and Ruth Hynes. Would you? With so many presentations and bids going on we endeavour to keep everything simple and up to date so here goes…..
THE PARTY REVIEW So we put on all our winter clothes and headed up to the mountain! We took a bus for climbing up half way and as soon as we got off the bus burst into a snowball fight , and it went on as we climbed. Oh snowball fights are so much fun! When we got to our destination, there was a surprise waiting for us. Our wonderful organizers gave out some delicious snaps and gave us the chance to make your own postcards with Thomas and Franziska in their traditional clothes with a beautiful view of the Alps behind. Then there was a great band playing giant “horns” completing the feeling of being in the Alps. Right after, group by group people went inside of the wooden house and get the party started with some “après skii” music playing along. After we all jumped, danced, sang and had some drinks the fondue feast started. Hot cheese with wine was just the perfect combination and it was unbelievably good! No doubt everybody had a great time sharing the cosy atmosphere with the other EASAiens. Coming back tot the hostel was another story to tell, we had torches in our hands and we tried to manage walking in the light of the torch and watching the beautiful sky with the shining stars at the same time. The last surprise of the day was Franziska waiting for us on the half way with hot wine! I guess it was one of the main topics for everyone how amazing the organisers are. They made it defiantly a ay to remember for all of us!

No questions came up, the 3 proposals were really good and clear, making our job even more difficult. We all split up to find out what an INCM should be, what an INCM should provide etc…we all agreed on the key points : ORGANISATION + DISCUSSIONS, as a Scotman said « an INCM is a meeting not an event ». The travel issues popped over again but im not going to bother you with that as there ain’t no solutions, just keep telling yourself that you are as exotic as anybody else. Berlin, the Tempelhof airport proposal which was obviously the best accommodation ever, was the first out due to the ‘IF part’, not 100% sure to get the hangar. So the choice was to be made between Macedonia and Denmark. Tough ! To quote paddy, its like choosing between vanilla and chocolate ice cream, hard job as we all love ice creams. But we did after 4 and half hours (EASARecord there, the quickest easa bid in easa history), and what seemed really important to us was the potential of the discussions highlighted in the Copenhagen one. EASA is a community, we want to explore it , improve it more and this INCM will provide us good lectures+good examples+good discussions on this topic. It seems she is also not the only one to have fallen for his latino charachter, as there were strong mumblings of appreciation coming from the female audience. It seems this INCM is awash with male lecture candy.

Those who could tear their eyes from his chiseled features would have heard a review of his studio here at the University in Liechstenstein. With the starting point of FL being the most unsustainable country in the world he then preceded to present a response that mirrored projects by SuperStudio and early Rem, maybe not suprising as he did a three year sentance under Warden Rem. Replacing the perfectly proportioned Swiss boxes that line Vaduz’s main road, its black institutional palaces to a land where there is no local word for ‘reccession’, with Barcelona-style Hausmann Highways lined with five storey residential blocks was seen as an alternative to building three storey mega-basements with no purpose.

The redensification of FL is perhaps the only way it will be saved from impolding in on itself under the weight of their own wealth and well-being. Perhaps not. It certainly struck a chord with a few people who sparked a livley debate afterwards, which was unfortunately cut short for the start of the walking tours. This reviewer can only hope that the next lecture provides just as much interesting work for debate, and the the speaker is as dreamy as Xavier. Swoon.

So after a couple of busy days we at the shamrag have come up with a bumper issue. After a fantastic time in Liechtenstein we finally have arrived to Yvonnes home town Chur. The sleeping situation is getting more fun as we are now sleeping in the party zone!! With the pinnacle of the INCM being the trip to Zumthors Baths everyone is ready to go, but yet sad to leave.
SPOONING WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT Hey there boys and girls do you want to make history tonight? The first attempt at world architecture spooning record (in a bunker in October) will take place in the end room on the middle bun. Of the many firsts that have occurred at this INCM I think I speak for us all when I say that this is defiantly time for a bloody good spooning. For those of you as of yet uninitiated in the act of spooning, it is essentially cuddling whilst in bed. It is acceptable in a vrity of social situations; the optimum is a post-coital spoon with someone you love. However it cal also be appropriate with friends of both sexes, be it in a state of hungover monging, accidental sleep-spooning or just if you want to feel the warmth of another man. Selecting your
prospective spooning partener requires careful consideration, almost comparable to when one buys a car. One needs to consider the size, weight, durability, how many miles to the gallon of booze ect ect. All these criteria need to be individually assessed to ensure a successful and fulfilling spooning experience. For example, if one were to partener in the Neal Patterson model, what you gain in size and durability you loe in the distinctive scent and wandering hands. The other end of the spectrium is the Ruth Hynes model a petite yet feisty spooner, whose only drawbacks is her little arms are incapable of enveloping her co-spoonee. Can we do this? YES WE CAN!
LOCAL BAR REVIEW ISH... ZAGGAZOW! = S’PUB(ic) Okay theres ginger pubes on the sofa but the crossants are free! For those of you with a little taste, theres a chuffing good time to be had just mere stones throw away in your new local boozer, the S-PUB. With its truly wonderous English vibe and solid wood interior, the S-pub offers many delights. Microwaved Pizza for just 20 Swiss francs! Behave!while you suckers were sitting in a boring lecture, a select few were having an amazing conversation over some tasty beverages. Comfy food, tasty couches + Wethers Originals. But at the end of the day the most exciting thing is the jedi towel machine. Rock on tommy tomorrow.
EXHIBIT YOURSELF ????... To call last nights exhibit a success would be a complete understatement. It was a fantastic display of achievement from everyone involved in this INCM, not least of all the organisers. After a fantastic tour of the Kunst hall Liechtenstien we were treated to some lovely food and incredible soup. The posters were then displayed and accompanied by the ever popular free booze. After an innocent misunderstanding (Luis) the following winners were announced……3rd place Belarus and Russia, 2nd Norway and 1st was Greece with a fantastic greecstentien island. The prizes were well deserved even though credit must go to everyone for creating such a high standard. More free booze was dispensed from Thomas’s mobile bar belt and the night rolled on full steam ahead, with some enthusiastic dancing infront of the live jazz band. however in pereparation for Thursdays “what is the future of architecture” some people who were nominated as tutors had to leave to prepare. Those that were left managed to help Thomas finish those bar tokens and then hopped on the last bus home which was driven by the best bus driver in Liechtenstien, after some rousing chanting lead by Neil Patterson, the driver then dropped us directly don to the hostel , saving our tired legs so that we could party longer in the hostel. As soon as we arrived however everyone was hit by an attack of THE HUNGER after few puny sandwiches were dispensed. After this megar offering the crowd decide to celebrate Christoph Holzs 25th birthday with the creation of the “The Super Sandwich” measuring a whopping 600 x 30mm ish, taking 25 minuted to toast and full of as much sauce as Joe Frame, the sandwich finally emerged to the
delight of all and was promptly consumed.
SYMPOSIUM.
The afternoon symposium consisted of four swiss architects giving a presentation on their opinion of “The future of the profession of architecture” followed by a group discussion with Easaiens. The flaw in the plan was that only one of these fully qualified professionals actually spoke about the theme. Advice for those who might one day lead such an abstract converstation, reading an essay out loud or speaking for about details is not the best way to address a bunch of students. General fatigue and hunover sent several into a gentle slumber, however the discussion afterwards was filled with enthusiasm. Highlights of the event included Conor O’Brien basically calling the lecturers old and boring after they revealed that Switzerland doesn’t actually care about sustainability and Beppe Deluxe coming close to blows with Mr taditional over the definition of concept. Another high point was when the lecturers we posed with question of what they would be if not an architect. The imaginative answers included “a lawyer” “an hotielier” ironically from a man who dresses exactly like a holtelier, and ecomomist and one who could not imagine any alternative to being an architect.

Will go to Vals around 14:00 on Saturday and stay there till the next Morning. You can use the Baths from 15:0020:00. Then you ll have Dinner at 21:00. After this you can go out in Vals and see the Hotel Alpina Restaurant from Gion A. Caminada, or stay in the Hotel using the Fitness Center. On Sunday at 8:00 , you can start using the Spa again, till our Bus is picking you up on 9:30 in front of the Soa, where you will take your seat for the Excusrion around Graubunden.
Paspels school is a reinforced concrete monolith. The architect did not use right angles for the outside, so although at first glance the exterior geometry seems simple, closer study reveals a chain-like reaction of slight distortions that shroud the building in an air of strangeness. Inside, however each classroom on the first and second floors has two rightangled sides that make up the walls of cruciform access corridors. In sum, the school can be interpreted as an exercise in the phenomenology of perception.
VALS GROUP 2 Will stay in Chur on Saturday. At night Group 2 can go out in Chur. On Sunday our Bus is picking us up at the Bunker at 8:30 for the Exkursion. You ll get to Vals arround 18:00. You can use the Spa from 18:00-20:00, have dinner at 21:00. Night Bathing starts at 22:3024:00. If you have still Time on Momday, you can stay at the bath untill Noon and then take the Bus/Train back to Chur. You ll be back in Chur arround 14:00. 2: Service Station Viamala, Thusis (2008) Architects: Iseppi and Kurath The Service Station will be introduced through the architect Stefan Kurath.
3: Stone Church, Cazis Architect: Werner Schmidt 4: Via Mala Schlucht The name Via Mala is Latin and translates „bad road“. This place is the most narrow section of the Hinterrhein valley on the way to the important San Bernardino Pass (2,065m asl). This important north-south connection is used for millennias to cross the Alps. Stone Age and Megalithic remains are found here as well as Celtic and Roman
The name is of Roman origin, created when the Roman road between Lindau and Milano used this place and the Splügen Paß/Passo dello Spluga (2,113m asl) instead of the San Bernardino. The reason for the name is obvious: the valley narrows to a deep gorge and it is dangerous to cross it. At Roman times there was no road, but only a narrow trail, which was high above the gorge and thus included some ascend and descend. Some small sections are visible from the old bridge, they are marked with signs showing Roman travellers. The first road was built in 1473, however the first time it was mentioned to be completed was in 1723. This road was redone various times. There is a version which is still used today, which was built at the begin of the 20th century. But the modern highway is most of the time a four lane motorway and crosses this place through two long tunnels. In order to visit the gorge, it is necessary to leave the modern motorway and use the old road. Exit either at Zillis or at Thusis, where the old road through Via Mala is signposted. The gorge has two extremely narrow sections, which are the most interesting part. The northen one is developed with paths, bridges and many steps. There is a parking at the old road and a small kiosk. After purchasing the tickets you go down many steps into the gorge. Only ten metres above the bottom is a short path into the gorge to the north and a bridge. Across the bridge and through a tunnel the visitor finally reaches a concrete platform, with a view into the widening and to the souther, second narrow part of the gorge. All together the gorge is 1000m
long. Only two short parts are narrow gorges, both about 150m long and 80m deep. But the most impressive number is the width: at some points it is much less than one metre, and most of the time its little above one metre. When the water rises in spring after snowmelt, the water level in the gorge may rise several tens of metres.
5: Gelbes Haus (1998) Architect: Valerio Olgiati Ever since architect Valerio Olgiati converted a nondescript house in Flims into a museum in 1998, the «Yellow House» has been causing quite a stir simply on account of its architecture. The Yellow House generally hosts two seasonal exhibitions a year. These feature mainly architectural, design and craftworkrelated themes that are illuminated from both a regional and international angle with the aim of stimulating an ambitious cultural dialogue. Provoking Both the Mind and the Senses A house like a bleached skull. The whitewashed walls radiate but are rough, the rubble walls are full of flaws, a wild, patched mixture of wood, stone and concrete. The windows without glazing bars are set deep in their niches and seem blind. A memento mori in the middle of the holiday village of Flims where, at the weekend, the brightly coloured motor cars of the tourists create a traffic jam? This building irritates perhaps to an even greater extent than the school in Paspels (1998) which made the architect Valerio Olgiati famous: a skewed distorted element made of fair-faced concrete without a visible roof, without the familiar composition of facades and with walls which do not stand directly on top of each other. A dense architecture that uses an extremely concise form to connect a high degree of complexity with the associated manifold possibilities of perception and interpretation. „Simply beautifully complex“ as one newspa-
per headline put it. Density of this kind is also a characteristic of the (white) Yellow House in Flims. A special theme in this building is the explicit investigation of the architecture of Rudolf Olgiati (1910-‘95), the architect‘s father. Shortly before his death he had presented his significant collection of regional cultural artefacts to the local community on the condition that the Yellow House, which is important in terms of the structure of the village but had been neglected and is historically of only minor interest, should be preserved and converted into a museum and cultural centre. In the deed of donation Rudolf Olgiati insisted upon a stone roof and the colour white, two characteristics of his work, and that the conversion should be reflect his taste.
6: Caplutta Sogn Benedetg (19851988) Architects: Peter Zumthor and Annalisa Zumthor-Cuorad A cylinder that turns into an oval and then into a keel: the geometry of this church, however definite, is also dynamic and elusive to the eye, all this exacerbated by the implantation of the building on a steep slope. The form keeps on rebelling against any final definition as the appendage of the entrance is added seamlessly to the main body of the building, adding concavity to the convexity of the overall form. Stepping inside the issue of form becomes clear, even if most of us will remain unaware that we are standing inside a ‚lemniscate, an algebraic curve to the fourth power forming the figure of an ‚8‘, which proportionally shortened also determines the sections‘ You feel the reassurance of being in a church, the axiality of the plan, the enclosing curve behind the altar, the height of the space enhanced by the series of pillars and the light coming from above, penetrating through a continuous band of windows that separate the ceiling from the wall, isolating it and revealing the geometry and the focal point of the space which is drawn by the beams that support the roof. The care for the quality of detailing
is sustained even in those places where the eye is not supposed to observe (during your visit take a look behind the concrete stairs of the entrance). The sensuality extracted from the materials is a matter for many more lines, so as Zumthor has repeatedly stated we shouldn‘t talk more about the building, the building is there, standing.
7: Schulhaus Vella Architects: Bearth and Deplazes
8: Vrin, Val Lumnezia Architect: Gion A. Caminada Is a town, where the Architect Gion . A. Caminada mailnly extanded the very old town, which makes it seem, as if the time in this town is standing still.
9 : Vals Spa Architect: Peter Zumthor Zumthor was selected as architect for the spa. The facility was built between 1993-1996. The baths were designed to look as if they pre-dated the hotel complex, as if they were a form of cave or quarry-like structure. This is particularly evident (?) from observing the grass roof structure of the baths, which resemble the foundations of an archaeological site, and reveal the form of the various bath rooms, which lie below, half buried into the hill-side. Built using locally quarried valser quarzite slabs, the spa building is made up of 15 different table-like units, 5 metres in height, with concrete roof units supported by tie-beams. These units fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. The nature of the construction is revealed through close inspection of the roof. The roofs of the units don’t join, but are covered by glass. There are 60,000 1 metre long sections of stone forming the cladding of the walls. These are initially appearing random like a wall. Enjoy the Spa!
