PREFACE Incubate stresses the importance of arts and culture for the development of the region and the curiosity and creativity of people. By linking the strong program to the Piracy theme Incubate captivates a wide audience, including those not immediately interested in art or music. In this way Incubate reinforces the grassroots of the cultural infrastructure. Piracy is a very relevant theme within the arts. What interests are of more importance: those of the author or society? How do we as a society give free rein to creativity and innovation and what can businesses learn from these tactics in order to see their interests secured? An illustration of this dilemma can be found in the following quote from Lil Wayne’s No Ceiling Mixtape: “Why do you keep, why do you give out free music, why do you do this, why why / Because I’m weezy? / I’m different. / I have plenty of it. / So, there’s nothing for me to share. / Priceless, that’s why it’s free.” Let many be a witnesses to a beginning of the answer at Incubate 2010. Thus Incubate makes a wonderful example of what we call The Art of Living Together. Under this motto we in Brabant are currently reinforcing the development of this Art by nominating ourselves for Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018. Incubate 2010 comes at a crucial moment in the decision making regarding that nomination. It is important that Arts and Culture are given the room to freely develop. ‘Incubators’ should be encouraged where possible. Policymakers create conditions for this debate and artists and creators have the responsibility to fill these in with their professional expertise and creativity. Thus works the Art of Living Together. Thanks to the organization of Incubate for the occasion of writing the preface to this unique festival. So put 1 and 1 together, and you’ll get… exactly… Charles Leadbeater will open the Incubate festival week with an inspiring lecture. He is a creative phenomenon and a gifted speaker. He is Tony Blair’s favorite corporate thinker and consulted Microsoft and Vodafone. He also wrote for the Financial Times and The Independent. As a journalist of The Independent he has been closely involved in the creation of the novel Bridget Jones’ Diary. In his latest book, We-Think: The Power of Mass Creativity, Leadbeater discusses the possibilities of the internet as a catalyst for global cooperation and creativity. Brabant Stad has the ambition to become cultural capital in 2018. To become cultural capital, cities have to invest in innovation. As part of this ambition Tilburg invests in social innovation. The web is creating a more open, participative and collaborative approach to culture. In his keynote, Leadbeater will focus on the role the arts can play in this social innovation process. What’s the role of a changing arts practice in a changing society? After Charles’ keynote lecture, a panel of experts from the fields of arts, economy and politics will take place with amongst others the Queen’s Commissioner for the Province of Noord-Brabant Wim van de Donk and director of STEIM and professor at The Hague University of Applied Sciences Dick Rijken.

26 Piracy intro
Piracy
Piracy in the arts is the main theme of this festival edition. With this theme Incubate responds to the public debate that has been raging for quite some time now. Boundaries of copyright are questioned and creative and economical ownership, especially with the digitization of society, are no fixed rules anymore. Terms like “original” and “copy” seem to be words of the past. Due to the economic and legal developments of our society, almost everything that can be translated into worth or money gets claimed as property. It’s the artists’ task to explore new ways to spread his art and ideas, without stepping into this economic pit. This search can show, and open up, new ways for the artist. It can make his personal growth deeper and it can develop his ideas faster. Copyright has been developed to stimulate creation, growth and the spreading of culture. To again reach this end, a balance must be found between the availability and distribution on one hand and the desire of the creator to be acknowledged and rewarded on the other. This piracy-project not only shows how piracy already is very much interwoven in our society, but also offers an investigation in the way the current copyright and intellectual property rights work, to try and reach a situation of the best possible creation, development and distribution of ideas and work. Be this in music, art, clothes or tattoos, Incubate shows you that piracy and copyright issues are everywhere.

Original Pirate Material One of the first mediums to encounter piracy in its modern form was radio. With illegal transmitters, somewhere in an attic or on a boat floating on international waters, radio-amateurs were playing music they liked.
These radio stations became incubators for new music. Because we like music, and we like pirate radio, we give broadcast time to cool radio stations throughout the week.

Input/Output The main goal of Input/Output is to recycle media. Work by two young artists will be shown: Martijn Hendriks and Ryan Trecartin.
talk shows like Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O’Donell and countless others that are broadcast during daytime and are viewed by millions of Americans.
Martijn Hendriks shows work from his series “This is Where we’ll do it”, in which he downloads videos from video site Youtube, edits them and then uploads them back to Youtube again.
Tommy-Chat Just E-mailed Me (2006) Narrative video short that takes place inside and outside of a e-mail.
This is where we’ll do it #5, #6 (2008) & #7 (2010) This is where we’ll do it is a series of Youtube videos from which the performing people have been digitally erased. Nothing happens, but there are still traces of what was erased. Young American artist Ryan Trecartin shows three works, which are mainly characterized by constant quotes from so-called ‘day-time television’:
What’s The Love Making Babies For (2003) Technophile gods wearing acid-washed denim argue about the future of gender and produce cryptic TV commercials. Yo A Romantic Comedy (2002) recartin borrows clichés from hip-hop culture and genre films to craft a dark, dream-like narrative that veers from comic melodrama to goth fantasy.

Educate The centre of Tilburg harbors five “vrije plakplaatsen” (open billboards were you can stick posters). These places are meant for individuals or organizations to promote themselves or their activities. For young adolescents it’s crucial to form an opinion, to ventilate this opinion and to have the freedom to ventilate this opinion. For artists, freedom of speech is very
important. During the Educate-program at Incubate, these two groups will come together. High school students will learn how to communicate their opinion on posters from case studies given by students from the art school in Tilburg (Academie voor Beeldende Vorming Tilburg). During the Incubate-week, their posters will hang throughout the city on the “vrije plakplaatsen.”

Thomas I’Anson This Is War… A few years ago, Thomas I’Anson worked as a model for some of the ‘big’ brands like Alexander McQueen, Puma, Levi’s and Dior. He never was at ease with these images of himself and of the companies he was representing. In This Is War he will remake new
portraits of himself and of the companies he worked for. He is in a unique position to make a statement about it, not only questioning advertising, and the notion of piracy, but also himself.

Verhoef/Tanis Blueprint Verhoef/Tanis is a collaboration between Jacolijn Verhoef and Aram Tanis. Since 2007 Verhoef and Tanis work together on a regular basis. Isolation, standardization and the mass-produced are important themes in their work. They want to make the people aware and confront them with subjects they often pass by or ignore. They focus on the repetitive patterns in buildings and landscapes. It’s a symbol for the anonymity of the contemporary
urban environment and the isolation of the people who live in it. It can also be seen as a critique on the mass produced. This also has an effect on the people who live in these urban environments. The media determines what is beautiful and how people judge things. It provides standardization in society, from identical shopping malls to the ‘idealization’ of the human body. Verhoef and Tanis want to show the other side and go beyond the façade.

Sweatshop (In collaboration with Kant Social Design Label) Copies of brand sweaters, shirts and jackets are produced on an immense scale in China. Since the original brands are unaffordable for the average Chinese person, the cheap, illegal versions of these brands are very popular. Some companies that produce the ‘pirated’ versions of these brands are even created or supported by the Chinese government to be able to offer their citizens these so wanted luxury items. In the Incubate Sweatshop these
‘fake’ brand items are copied back to originals. Social design label Kant will adjust the items by hand and will add hand knitted and hand crafted elements to them. By doing so, a whole new form of copying emerges. Though a copy of a mass produced product, this ‘second generation’ copy is much more valuable than the original. The materials that are used in the reworking are collected through the Incubate community and the results will be displayed in public spaces by dressing the numerous statues in the city of Tilburg in them.

THE KIOSK OF PIRACY The Kiosk Of Piracy is an offline collection of torrents from sites like The Pirate Bay. At a wooden kiosk, visitors can download these torrents through a

PIRATE CONFERENCE
The Pirate Conference offers reflection on the comprehensive piracyprogram of Incubate Festival and on the value of creation in society. Incubate Festival is about artistic progress, that’s why the artist also takes a central role in this part of the program. How to reach optimal creation, development and distribution of ideas within the current state of copyright? A lot of the time, the discussion on Piracy revolves around the economic and legal position of the consumer and producer. This conference is about creation itself though. Both supporters and opponents of piracy will get a chance to express their views through panels, workshops, keynote speeches and information stands.

Students of Fontys International Event Music & Entertainment Studies, the Academy of Pop Culture Leeuwarden and the Utrecht School of the Arts will investigate the most desirable system for the operation of copyright within the near future.
Hank Shocklee (Bomb Squad) Hank Shocklee, Music Producer, founder of hip hop formation Public Enemy and The Bomb Squad, will be interviewed by Job de Wit (freelance pop/hip hop/house journalist) about his method of production, his view on (the future of) copyright, and sampling and the recycling of material to build a new work and a new context.
Stands Incubate wants to give organisations that are in some way related to the subjects of copyright the opportunity to represent themselves on the Pirate Conference. Expect to find Creative Commons, Pictoright and the Dutch Pirate Party here amongst others. Studystore Tilburg University will be selling some very interesting books on copyright/piracy this day.
Xavier Le Roy invites Mårten Spångberg Piracy and copyright topics are also prominent and important topics in the world of dance. Performance artist and choreographer Xavier Le Roy invites Mårten Spångberg (essayist, dance critic, dramaturge and choreographer) for a discussion on recycling, reinterpretation and re-enactment of performance art. Is it an infraction of copyrights, or should it also be taken as a compliment and a possibility to find a new audience for a work?
Rob Scholte lecture Rob Scholte (Amsterdam, 1 juni 1958) is a Dutch contemporary artist. He will treat the concepts of copyright and piracy approached from his own background. Scholte’s work is controversial because it often uses existing images. He shocked audiences with his work and knows how to effectively make the media and cultural industry respond to his will. Scholte will give a lecture on the meaning of piracy within his work and within the arts in general.

In the tattoo world, the one who handles the needle is considered the artist. From the perspective of the fine arts this is a unique situation because the ‘tattoo artist’ merely makes a copy of an already existing image. An art piece gets its value because of its uniqueness; only one, or a few copies, are made. With tattoos, this uniqueness is questionable. But who’s the real artist? The one who made the design? Or the one who handles the needle? Ten contemporary artists have created their own designs for tattoos. This collection will be presented in the traditional way, on so-called “flash sheets”. During the festival, visitors (who subscribed earlier) can have the works tattooed by master tattoo artist Darko Groenhagen for free. But Incubate will also distribute these flash sheets to tattoo shops throughout the Netherlands. This project will theoretically create an infinite number of copies of these artists’ works.

S. Lloyd Trumpstein S. Lloyd Trump Stein (Antwerp, 1969) is an artist, cartoonist and performer whose work is so diverse it can hardly be categorized. The work of this artist, performer, and cartoonist is of an absurd humor with a deadly serious undertone.
Koen Delaere Growing up, Delaere became interested in the punk scene and ended up in Art School somewhat by accident. Traces of the anti-design of the underground culture, the over-aesthetic aspects of graffiti and street art can be seen in his work, which is mostly abstract paintings.
Martijn Hendriks In the work of Martijn Hendriks abstraction, materiality and meaning are explored through a performative approach to the art work. Collected materials are used as a source for sculptures and videos that consider the language of abstraction in relation to the dispersion of images and information and their ongoing translation from one form or medium into another.
Marc Bijl Bijl is a highly versatile artist, steadily gaining recognition for the last five years from museums and galleries all over the world, who makes objects, actions, installations, videos and sculptures. wildbeaming
Wildbeaming is a temporary form of graffiti. An urban setting is used as a temporary museum for modern art. At three different locations the (unexpected) viewer is confronted with huge projected images using a beamer and the urban surroundings as a screen. The videos engage in a relationship with these surroundings, creating a different context and experience of the place. Not a rectangular projection on a white exterior, but a projection that blends into the architecture of a building in the street or in the form of a tree or other organic form. Next to three set locations there will be a mobile projection that keeps changing place and will respond to the events of the day in atmosphere and magnitude.

hester scheurwater The wildbeaming project is conducted by Hester Scheurwater, visual artist from Rotterdam, Netherlands. Her work focuses mainly on the three female archetypes: Virgin, Mother, Whore and the fine lines that separate them. Scheurwater’s films seek to express desires, fears and obsessions in an alarming manner. Her pictures show daydreams, fantasies and nightmares, in which the modern individual (pictured as grotesque doll-like women) appears isolated from reality, unable to connect with their selves or their surroundings. The women are shown as an object, isolated and sometimes absent, thrown back to basic animal instincts: “female behavior”.

With the help of project partners WEI, TAC and Avans Colleges a selection of the most interesting ‘new’ artists has been made that will present themselves within this program. Instead of focusing on a selection of big international names, this project wants to show the broad development of a new generation of artists from Brabant. In terms of imagery they regularly break with academic laws and come to new autonomous insights. All artists will incorporate the theme of Piracy into their own work.

Turkish remakes of Star Trek, the Brazilian version of Star Wars or the robots from Doctor Who starring in an adult movie. Mockbusters, remakes, sweded versions, re-cuts and found footage: the full range of piracy gets shown at this year’s Incubate film program. Creative re-use of scripts, names and concept imagery is one of the factors of Piracy we try to highlight at this year’s festival. And what better way to show it than in film! We’ll also be hosting a special around one of the most hated film studios in Hollywood: The Asylum. These guys produce “Mockbusters”, often made with a low budget, created with the apparent intention of piggy-backing on the publicity of a major film with a similar title or theme. Together with The Asylum, Incubate will present the premiere of Titanic II, a long awaited sequel to the 90’s blockbuster!

Daleks (18+)
Planet Wars
(Roman Nowicki, 2005)
(Adriano Stuart, 1978)
A bizarre erotic horror movie starring four women who got abducted by the Daleks from BBC series Doctor Who. The BBC tried to prevent the spreading of Abducted by the Daleks in 2005 upon learning of it, but despite this action, the film was leaked onto the internet.
Made in less than a month, this Star Wars rip off was released in Brazil a full 5 months before the original Star Wars hit Brazilian theaters, causing it to be a South American smash hit! The film features just about every Star Wars character you can think of; as well as some of the most embarrassingly bad sets, special effects and disco dance numbers you will ever find in a movie.

Alien vs. Hunter (The Asylum, 2007) Alien vs. Hunter is a “mockbuster” made to capitalize on the popularity of the more widely released Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. The alien in AvH is a rip off from H.R. Giger’s Alien series.
PLANET WARS
pirate cinema
Da Vinci Treasure (The Asylum, 2006) Based on historical events, a thrillseeking forensic anthropologist must unravel the mysterious code locked within the works of Leonardo DaVinci. In his search for the greatest hidden treasure known to man, his hunt turns into a deadly chase around the world, leading to an explosive finale that will shake the foundations of history.
H. G. Wells’ War of the Worlds (The Asylum, 2005) In this modern retelling of H.G. Wells’ classic sci-fi horror, civilization is laid to ruin when a super race of aliens invades Earth. In a blink of an eye, massive “walkers” cover the planet, annihilating all in their path. As cities crumble and human flesh is ripped from the bone, one man struggles to find the one weapon that will turn the tide for mankind.

War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave (The Asylum, 2008) The aliens return to complete their plan of human domination, launching a second wave of attacks that threaten to destroy what is left of humanity.
ODDSAC (Danny Perez & Animal Collective, 2010) ODDSAC is an experimental film featuring psychedelic visuals, directed by Danny Perez and with music by Animal Collective. The movie blurs the boundaries between sound and vision. The band and the director worked for almost four years to create an ambitious audiovisual project, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. In between, Animal Collective was at its creative peak, which resulted in the highly acclaimed album Merriweather Post Pavilion. Danny Perez is also known for his live visual performances for bands like Black Dice and Panda Bear.

Paranormal Ascendancy (ZAB, 2008) Kenny has experienced some strange events in the middle of the night and he’s convinced that he has a ghost living in his room. Expecting to see nothing but a few tricks, housemate Michael visits Kenny’s room himself one night and is totally freaked out by the experience. Soon the activity becomes increasingly worse and they find themselves being taunted by mysterious spirits.
Paranormal Entity (The Asylum, 2009) Actual footage of the events leading to the 2008 “murder” of Samantha Finley. This DVD, released against the wishes of the authorities, proves that nothing human caused Samantha’s death.
Shorts: Recuts A re-cut trailer, or retrailer is a parody trailer for a movie created by editing footage from that movie or from its original trailers, and thus are a form of mash up. They generally derive humor from misrepresenting the original film: for instance, a film with a murderous plot is made to look like a comedy, or vice versa.
Shorts: Stop Motions In Stop Motion Remakes, film makers use the plot and imagery of well known Hollywood blockbuster and recreate these movies using apples, Simpsons characters or whatever they find is useful. A lot of the stop motion remakes are made with Lego.
Shorts: Swedes The concept of ’sweding’ is easy. It comes from the American comedy film Be Kind Rewind that started a new internet hype with so-called sweded movies. In the film the main players recreate movies that got erased by accident. After the release of the movie a lot of people recreated their own favorite movies. At Incubate you can watch a selection of sweded movies.

Snakes On A Train (The Asylum, 2006) Under a powerful Mayan curse, snakes are hatched inside a young woman, slowly devouring her from within. Her only chance for survival is a powerful shaman who lives across the border. With only hours to live, she jumps on a train. Unfortunately for the passengers aboard, they are now trapped, soon to be victims of these flesh-eating vipers.

Titanic 2 (The Asylum, 2010) European Premiere! On the 100th anniversary of the original voyage, a modern luxury liner christened “Titanic 2,” follows the path of its namesake. But when a tsunami hurls an ice berg into the new ship’s path, the passengers and crew must fight to avoid a similar fate.
Tribulation 99 (Craig Baldwin, 1991)
SNAKES ON A TRAIN
Craig Baldwin is an American experimental filmmaker who uses “found” footage and images from the mass media to undermine and transform the traditional documentary. Upon its release in 1991, Tribulation 99 became an instant counterculture classic. Baldwin’s “pseudopseudo-documentary” presents a factual chronicle of US intervention in Latin America in the form of the ultimate far-right conspiracy theory, combining covert action, environmental catastrophe, space aliens, cattle mutilations, killer bees, religious prophecy, doomsday diatribes, and just about every other crackpot theory broadcast through the dentures of the modern paranoiac.

Transmorphers (The Asylum, 2007) In this low budget Transformers rip off, earth is invaded by alien robots. After 400 years of oppression a group of humans are preparing the ultimate battle against the robots.
Turkish Star Trek Turist Ömer Uzay Yolunda (Hulki Saner, 1973) Star Trek was so big in Turkey that life stood still when Star Trek was on TV. No wonder that people came up with this Turkish version of Star Trek. They ripped the story from Star Trek episode “Man-Trap” and added a new story line with Turkish hero Turist Ömer, who is transferred to the Enterprise where he makes fun of all the Star Trek characters like Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk.

Zea (NL) Zea is a breakpop one-man band from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Armed with guitar, mic, drum machines, sampler and synths, Arnold de Boer comes with fast-paced programmed drums, copious synth work, guitars that go from jangly to strummy on a moment’s notice, and vocals that chant as much as they sing; 8-bit electronic sounds exploding all over the place, and at the same time a pop tune isn’t out of the question either. Zola Jesus (US) The Ex (NL) The Ex is a legendary punk band from Amsterdam. They formed in 1979 at the height of the original punk explosion making them one of the longest-lived and most influential punk bands still in existence. Breaking from the relatively narrow confines of punk rock, The Ex has incorporated a wide array of influences, often from non-Western and non-rock sources. Because of their legendary status, and their original approach to music, Incubate asked them to curate the V39 program on Monday. Punk, Impro 22:15 – 23:00 V39
Zola Jesus is the endeavor of a solitary girl named Nika Roza Danilova to simultaneously combat and invoke the approaching apocalypse using the only weapon/offering she has; her voice. After a decade of opera study and a musical awakening involving such varied inspiration as Billboard bubblegum, classical arias, no wave, avant industrial, she was able to thread her influences into a sound uniquely her own. She has a split with Burial Hex and got raving reviews in The Wire, Pitchfork, The Fader and Dusted. Singer/songwriter, gothic 23:00 - 00:00 Cul de Sac

MUSIC PROGRAM TUESDAY Bongo A Bang Bang! (AU/DE) Bongo a Bang Bang is a composition for drums, pyrotechnics and prerecorded crowd sounds. It’s about climaxes, climaxes and more climaxes, with a nod to the epically but preposterous drumsolo’s of old (think: Ginger Baker, Cosy Powell, John Bonham and (yuk!) Lars Ulrich). The drums are handled by improv/jazz/experimentalist Steve Heather. His sidekick Skadi earned her pyrotechnics skills through shows for a.o. Lenny Kravitz, Robbie Williams and Genesis. Get a good giggle out of it!
Idiot Glee (US) Idiot Glee is James Friley from Lexington, Kentucky. The one-mansamples-and-loop-pedal-band has been influenced by bands like Pet Sounds, ENO, Yes and The Beatles. His astral indie-pop has been taking the internet by storm recently. As his Mormon beliefs prohibit him from drinking alcohol, he’s living proof that good songwriters don’t necessarily need drugs and alcohol. Indie-pop, samples 21:00 - 21:45 V39

Space Siren (NL) The foursome Space Siren is moody without being too heavy and catchy without being too poppy. Their songs sound like they know where they’re going, but they’ll never let you in on their secret. They have that forward drive every band should have: the sound of needing to make music, not just wanting to. Shoegaze, Noise Rock 20:00 - 20:30 V39

The Chap (UK) The Chap is an experimental pop band from London. Their music is a mix of rock and pop with small quantities of almost every other genre thrown in for good measure. They’re known for their energetic live shows which often end with exploding violins and cellos. Like Devo with Asperger’s, and attitude. Experimental rock, Pop 23:00 - 00:00 Cul de Sac
Women (CA) The four members of Women have been in bands together since childhood, and as a result the foursome is able to marry dense experimental noise and intricate instrumentation with delicate, melodic songwriting in a seemingly effortless manner. It’s as The Jesus And Mary Chain are visiting Andy Warhol with a big sac of pot. Experimental rock, Shoegaze 22:15 – 23:00 V39

MUSIC PROGRAM WEDNESDAY Drainland (UK) Irish friends of the mighty Shikari, who invited them for the special Shikaricurated evening on Wednesday. Drainland creates some of the filthiest sludge infused screamo doomcore, while taking their influences from the likes of Godflesh, Cattlepress, Dystopia and Unruh. Like they say themselves: Alienated and alienating. You better believe it. Screamo, Hardcore 21:30 - 22:00 V39
Drowning Dog & Malatesta (US) Drowning Dog & Malatesta has taken their anarchist hip-hop propaganda through Europe and the U.S. in recent years and was an original founder of this Entartete Kunst organization and the S.F. They can’t just shake off their twisted approach to music coming from bands like Golden Showers (Imler) and EC8OR (Catani) even if they learned to dress in suitable coats. Catani and Imler, both big fans and heavily influenced by garage punk, booty bounce, rockabilly, rap, dancehall, 60s beat and yes early and new (electro) punk, found the perfect pitch to face the upcoming facts in music. Expulsion (NL) The musical equivalent of a racecar: extremely fast, annoyingly loud and dangerous for the spectators. Once it’s on speed, which is obviously pretty quick, there’s nothing that can slow it down. Expulsion’s unbelievable speedy thrash metal will be the main reason for many moshpit induced injuries even before Shikari enters the stage. Trash, Metal 20:45 - 21:15 V39

Shikari (NL) This legendary Dutch hardcore/ screamo band is playing shows again after their split in 2005. So Incubate asked them to curate the Wednesday in the V39, inviting befriended bands. Their singer tends to fall on the ground and will be shaking like a maniac as the other guys will do on their instruments. If you think Enter Shikari is raging and intense, it’s time to watch the REAL Shikari. Hardcore, Screamo

MUSIC PROGRAM THURSDAY Bram Stadhouders, Sidsel Endresen & Jim Black (NL/NO/US) A unique collaboration between three giants of improvised jazz. Bram Stadhouders is a young atmospherotronic guitarist whose electronic music is introverted, sometimes alienating and certainly intrusive. He already played with Jim Black, who is known for his versatile style of drumming, varying loud drumming with subtle percussion. Vocalist Sidsel Endresen has been a convincing voice in all musical genres she has touched since the eighties, from avant-garde to soul. She has previously worked with among others adventurous saxophonist Håkon Kornstad and Bugge Wesseltoft. Jazz, Electronic, Ambient 21:30 – 22:30 NS16
ForgetToForgive (NL) Niche music is not meant to be liked by everyone. That’s why crabcore is called crapcore by those who don’t get it. Strong music creates strong opposition. But that does not slow down these four guys from The Netherlands. ForgetToForgive brings metal core in its harshest form: unrelenting and in your face. Metalcore, Crabcore 20:00 - 20:30 V39
Frog Pocket (UK) Frog Pocket is John Charles Wilson from Ayr (Scotland). His manic, physical sets are a spectacle that can only impress. Incorporating backing beats, live fiddle, guitar and vocal, Frog Pocket has maintained his credibility both as a musician and contemporary electronic performer. The fractured AFX-like beats alongside beautiful melodies are the trademark of his energetic live act and his somewhat misinterpreted demeanor only adds to his mystique. Haribo Macht Kinder Froh (NL) HMKF are taking their musical influences from bands like Enter Shikari and Asking Alexandria. They call it partycore, but you can call it anything you want. Frank Fairfield (US)
El-B is a very influential pioneer of the dubstep genre, who produces also a lot of hip-hop and UK Garage. His music has been described as “Edgier than UK garage but sexier than the cold drum & bass.” As Burial pointed out in 2006, El-B’s swing is the “last secret left in music”. That’s all you need to know. Now go dance.
This is not 2010. No, when Frank Fairfield plays his banjo or his fiddle you’re mysteriously transferred to the early 1900’s in between the hillbillies who dance barefooted in the mud. You won’t get you folk more traditional than this. No one should look surprised if he leaves the building through a time machine.

The sensibility of Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp is postpunk, and the instrumentation is appropriately bizarre - trombone, marimba, fiddle, guitar, drums and double-bass. This Swiss band is surreal in the true sense: more than art, it’s a way of life; of living on the edge of your senses. The players perform with a conviction that, in other circumstances, would be dedicated to fringe religion. Action Beat are an improv noise/nowave band which is often made up of musicians who are available to play a gig on any particular date. This young metal commando was born in the year 2000 in Albacete, an isolated small town in the middle of nowhere in Spain. Influenced by the early Bay Area Thrash Metal and N.W.O.B.H.M. scenes, Angelus Apatrida have crafted their career so far with two albums, countless of live-appearances on larger Spanish festivals and in the clubs of most of the country’s larger cities.

Circle Bros (BE)
Formed in 1991, Circle is the most visible and prolific name in the Finnish avant-rock underground. Having survived innumerable lineup changes, the band and its founder, bassist/ vocalist/guitarist Jussi Lehtisalo, have constantly reinvented themselves, weaving hypnotic mantras out of exacting Krautrock beats, heavy riffs, arty noise, dark psychedelica, and soundtrack-like beauty. Hard, chilly repetition has served as the lone unifying theme throughout 15 years of experiments.
Circle Bros is in fact a one-man band, because Wim does everything. This ‘post-rock type of thing’ started late 1997 as a bedroom project. The current sound of Circle Bros was more or less created along with the tape “Seesaw”, where references to bands like Windy and Carl and Azusa plane were pretty clear, though Circle Bros songs are more structured like popsongs. Edgar Wappenhalter (BE) If the term ‘funeral folk’ rings a bell, you know what to expect: Belgian electronic sound experiments that most of the time result in sonic mayhem. Tropical space cowboys The Cumbia Cosmonauts are fast invading dancefloors all over this planet with their monumental fiesta sound from Latin America. Their music is futuristfolk, refined low-fi culture based on the raw Afro-Caribbean cumbia roots music of Colombia mixed with Central European instrumentation and Jamaican dub wizardry.
The Feeling Of Love is born in 2005 and bring back best of nineties-garageblues, cold punk psyche and Kraut without the stench of revisionism. Guitars alternately slide and keyboards get punched. They run blues-trash and kraut-punk through the gauntlet and come out the other side reborn as some snarling beast.

Harsh and experimental noise from London, that’s BBBlood. Once described by Bizarre magazine as “Tinnitusinducing Insanity, like being vomited on by some angry digital god. From Montreal comes one of the most killer riff machines this side of the 3 headed love child of Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy and Fu Manchu. Damien Jurado (US) The music of Damien Jurado may very well be the most beautiful music you’ll hear this Incubate. He uses a lot of folk elements in his singersongwriter style, which creates a rather nostalgic atmosphere. El-G (FR) We don’t know a lot about El-G, aka French pop weirdo Laurent Gerard, other than he’s supposed to be sort of like a twisted modern day Serge Gainsbourg. Is this accurate? Fair Ohs (UK) It does not sound like them, but Fair Ohs has that same ‘happy crazy surf summer energy’ as Animal Collective has. Hellhounds (UK) This is a Welsh act that will blow the roof off with his unique sound of full-on-dirty-nasty-one-man-swampblues. The Rott Childs (BE) Out of the ashes of Rock ‘n Roll band extraordinaire El Guapo Stuntteam, The Rott Childs arises. Together with members of Rise and Fall and Mauro, this surely is a Belgian super group. Relentless rock ‘n roll, right in your face. Rock ‘n Roll 18:30 -19:15 NS16
Groningen has a great history of rock ‘n roll and punkbands. Of course, that isn’t weird when you have a club like Vera. Traumahelikopter plays in the vein of Black lips, The Oblivians and Mudhoney. Er gaat niets boven Groningen! Punk 16:00 -16:30 Kafee ‘t Buitenbeentje
Zombie Zombie (FR) Influenced by Krautrock (e.g., Can, Neu!) as well as horror soundtracks (e.g., Goblin, John Carpenter), Zombie Zombie is a French indie electronic duo with a penchant for vintage synthesizers. So they’re very excited to open for Hallogallo. Krautrock 19:45 -20:30 013 Kleine Zaal

106 glocal intro
glocal
Brabant is a rural province of The Netherlands. It’s considered mostly as an agricultural province. Glocal uses the unique aspects of Brabant, the countryside, the people, the gemoedelijkheid, for one-off and site-specific projects. The combination of hyperlocal surroundings and international artists in a community scale area not only creates great art. It also creates great social connections. Last year folk band Wardruna played an amazing performance in Nature Theatre Oisterwijk. This year we will take things a bit further by not only using the Nature Theatre but also the rural surroundings of Tilburg and the province of Brabant to stage performances. Ease back at a farm, Mary chapels and the beautiful surroundings, cause, like we would say: “’t Leven is goed in m’n Brabantse land.”

jeroen doorenweerd: Ghost Performance If you were at the Health-performance at deAffaire festival in Nijmegen, you could see somebody filming the performance of the LA-noiserockers. This was Jeroen Doorenweerd. He uses this footage to create his new piece of art called “Ghost Performance.” With beamers, Doorenweerd creates a virtual space in which visitors can visit places
and see performances they would never be able to see in real life. It’s like you were actually at that healthperformance on the 18th of July 2010. Dutch Artist Jeroen Doorenweerd is the son of a skipper. As a child he roamed the rivers of The Netherlands and Belgium. Landscape and movement within that landscape has always been an integral part of his art. Ghost Performance will also be travelling across the province later in the year.

Six Organs Of Admittance Six Organs of Admittance is the primary musical project of guitarist Ben Chasny. Chasny’s music is largely guitar-based and is often considered new folk; however it includes obvious influences, marked by the use of drones, chimes, and eclectic percussive elements. He records albums for Drag City and Holy Mountain, among other labels. Chasny is also a member of the psychedelic band Comets on Fire, and has working relationships with
Badgerlore, Current 93, Magik Markers, Devendra Banhart, Sunn O))), and many others. His musical landscapes can be as warm as a summer afternoon, or as beautiful as a winter landscape. It’s what you prefer. During the month of June, Ben Chasny visited little chapels by the side of country roads in the surroundings of Tilburg: the so called Mary Chapels. He drew inspiration from those visits to write new material for Six Organce of Admittance. During his performance in the Pauluskerk on Sunday, he will also play this new piece of music.

Black Mountain An ancient amphitheater in a rural surrounding, one of the most picturesque forests of the province of Brabant, and the roaring guitars of Canadian rock band Black Mountain will be the ingredients to a psychedelic experience at Incubate you won’t soon forget! Ever since their first self-titled album on vibrant indie rock label Jagjaguwar in 2005, Black Mountain has gained a large following among fans of indie, stoner, prog and psychedelic 70’s rock worldwide. Drawing on blues, psychedelica, acid rock and folk alike, their dark but trippy sound convinced not only fans but also received raving
reviews from the music press, including Pitchfork’s prestigious Best New Music tag. Their second album ‘In the Future’ resonates with the same epic ring that made their debut album an instant classic. The album shows the evolution and versatility of the band, seamlessly playing short folk-pop songs along with driving modern rock masterpieces, with the seventeen-minute rock opus ‘Bright Lights’ as an absolute highlight. Black Mountain’s brand new third album ‘Wilderness Heart’ was only released this week and already promises to be of at least as much impact as its predecessors. >

The latter even took them on tour with them through Canada and the U.S., which saw Black Mountain playing in arena’s for thousands of people.
This very special performance of Black Mountain will be open for everyone with an Incubate 2010 day ticket for Friday and of course the Incubate 2010 passepartouts. Black Mountain’s performance at the Natuurtheater in Oisterwijk will be an exclusive experience you’ll never forget. The open space and green surroundings give this theater a unique and magical atmosphere in its own right. One can only imagine what magic will happen when unleashing the spotlights and the heavy spiritual sounds of Black Mountain into this exceptional theatre and forest.

112 glocal Dan Deacon & Jimmy Joe Roche
Dan Deacon & Jimmy Joe Roche While in residency at the Incubate Festival, musician Dan Deacon and filmmaker Jimmy Joe Roche have collaborated on a new piece of video art. Deacon and Roche interweave the aesthetics of the Baltimore DIY underground, American pop, the rich beauty and history of Dutch culture and their own mental labyrinths, into a surrealistic narrative. They have created a film that is a melting pot of experimental performance and sound - quiet beauty - fantasy and (a little) social commentary. Expect a choir, AK47’s, a church organ, fire, smoke and weird costumes. Tilburg and its
surroundings weren’t safe during the shoot in the first two weeks of August. They had a lot of crazy ideas. And a lot of them made it in the film. Dan Deacon is a Baltimore, Marylandbased electronic music composer/ performer. Influenced by artists like Devo, Talking Heads, Scratch Orchestra, Raymond Scott, and Conlon Nancarrow, Deacon played in many bands, including tuba for Langhorne Slim and guitar in the improvisational grind core band Rated R. Dan Deacon’s compositional style is best classified as in the future shock genre along with Santa Dads, Blood Baby, Ecstatic Sunshine, Ponytail, and other bands in the growing Baltimore music scene. His electro is equally as

When playing solo he performs on floor level within the audience, his musical devices being set up on a low table, and surrounded by the crowd. Jimmy Joe Roche is an American visual artist and underground filmmaker. His videos have been screened internationally in different museums and festivals. Recently his music video for Deacon’s “Crystal Cat” was featured on the front page of YouTube, gathering over a million views. But next to working with long time collaborator Dan Deacon, Roche has also worked with the Academy Awardwinning filmmaker Jonathan Demme (director of Silence of the Lambs), most recently acting in the film Rachel Getting Married. In 2006 he shot and edited the Neil Young “Heart of Gold: Behind the Scenes” featurette, and
in 2003 he worked with Demme to create the journal for Corporal Melvin in the Paramount film the Manchurian Candidate. After the screening of the movie of Dan Deacon and Jimmy Joe Roche, there will be a performance by Dan Deacon. This very special performance of Dan Deacon in Boerderij ‘t Schop will be open for everyone with an Incubate 2010 day ticket for saturday and of course the Incubate 2010 passepartouts. Bus rides to the Boerderij ‘t Schop will cost € 3,-. More info on the bus rides on next page. You can also get there by own transportation.

The two leading alternative venues in Holland will be curating the Paradox venue at this year’s Incubate. WORM from Rotterdam and OCCII from Amsterdam will host the week program at the Paradox venue together. Combining the strengths of their network and the multi disciplinary focus of their organization, these venues and their respective artistic leaders will put together a piece of their history and contemporary views, both artistically and socially. Worm is the incubator for DIY-culture in Rotterdam. Worm organizes concerts, movies, workshops, master classes, festivals and different events. Next to that they have a movie working place, a sound studio, a shop and a very fast digital platform (WORM. station). They stimulate and help different productions like Dutch programs about national and international festivals and media publications. The OCCII (Onafhankelijk Cultureel Centrum In It) is a venue for independent performances in Amsterdam. Their aim is to provide a stage and hospitality for noncommercially touring bands and to select the freshest sounds of the DIY underground. The organization is mostly run by volunteers and has its roots in the squatting movement. Next to the concert hall, there’s a vegan restaurant (called MKZ), the Anarchist library, theatre for children (Kinderpret), a bike workshop (Farafina), a sauna (Fenomeen), rehearsal studios and Art work spaces plus a big courtyard with a garden.
