“I DON’T BELIEVE IN UTOPIA BUT I DO BELIEVE IN INCUBATE”

If you’re like me you probably mistrust anyone who thinks that human affairs are just a hair’s breadth away from a golden period of enlightenment. There are too many who believe it is only a failure of their philosophy, religious creed or political orientation to gain more traction that is preventing us from standing round wearing white robes, holding scrolls and listening to whale music in the golden dawn of a new era. These people are pillocks. But even if Utopia did exist, I believe it would look something like Tilburg. It’s a new town that works. It’s always clean. People cycle everywhere. There’s art or something resembling art in every window you pass. Art is also on every other billboard and in most public spaces.

And despite being quite small, it still manages to host Roadburn, Stranger Than Paranoia and Festival Mundial. (And that’s before I mention the largest and longest running gay friendly fun fair in all of the Benelux Regions.) But above all else, Incubate is about as good as it gets when it comes to showcasing contemporary left field art and extreme music side by side. Want to see an extremely rare performance by Carter Tutti Void? No problem. Fancy getting far out and fuzzed up with Goat? You got it. Do you want to have your head cracked open Skullflower so the sunlight can pour in? Our pleasure. You’re going to have the time of your life and if you don’t you can punch me in the stomach and call me Susan because when you look at me, you’re looking at someone who knows how to have a good time. Best wishes, John Doran Editor, The Quietus

ART We’ve teamed up with several organizations to bring you a very colourful art programme. We’re extremely proud to bring this programme in close collaboration with TextielMuseum, Museum de Pont, Theaters Tilburg, Hall of Fame and Gastatelier Leo XIII. The following artists and works of art are presented at Incubate.

JENNIFER MEHIGAN  IRE Jennifer Mehigan is an Irish artist, currently based in Singapore. She is interested in how digital communication and intimacy, affection and sensuality are affecting each other. The relationship between the human body and communication technology and virtual worlds is what she calls ‘cybersensuality’. This manifests itself in interactivity through touch screens and keyboards and in online encounters between people. In her work she captures these relationships in both digital and analogue ways. With paintings, costumes, found footage video’s and sculptures.

Jennifer Mehigan has designed large textiles for Incubate that will be manufactured by the Tilburg Textile Museum. These will be shown between 16 September and 22 September at Theater Tilburg. And her Cybersensuality films will be show at Textielmuseum on 19 Sept.

Creates specially designed textiles at the TextielMuseum on 15 September Textiles are shown at Theaters Tilburg on 16 – 21 September Films at TextielMuseum on 19 September, 14:00 – 15:00h

ART

TEMPORARY COLLECTIVE – ‘WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR WAR’ @ A FOREST, TILBURG Temporary collective artist group: Sjuul Joosen, Maud van der Beuken, Charlotte Besuyen, Nele Brokelmann, Anna Maria Gerrits, Evelien Mattheij and Antal Bast. vulnerability and strength, politics and power The word WAR may seem to refer to armed conflict, but, within this context, war refers to harm done by any human being to any other being. The location of the project is a forest. Any forest is to be considered a habitat. Equal to a city. A city can be build with power but a forest grows on strength. The phrase WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR WAR expresses: “There are reasons for war, and they can be named, but even if we know these reasons and explain their mechanisms; the harm that is done can never be expressed with any words. So these reasons of war that are known, yet still incomprehensible, are therefor referred to as ‘WHAT’.”

▲ KUSTA A SAKSI FIN @ TEXTIELMUSEUM The works of Kustaa Saksi venture in the borderlands of sleep and wakefulness. The Amsterdam based and internationally appreciated artist Kustaa Saksi showcases the collection ‘Hypnopompic’ at TextielMuseum till November 2nd, presenting surreal and unique artworks manufactured with jacquard weaving technique. The textiles are made of different fibers, creating various textures and depth. For Incubate he’ll create a design that relates to Jennifer Mehigan’s work and that can be embroided on a shirt during the festive opening of the festival.

15

The participating artists create a piece in a forest with three guidelines: Bring little to no material from outside the forest into the forest; bring little or no tools from outside the forest into the forest, and; make a piece in such a way that the forest will be the same after departure of the artists, as it was upon arrival. To visit the project, please make an appointment via: temporarycollective@gmail.com.

WENDY WHITE – ‘WE’ @ OUTSIDE OF THE TIVOLIGARAGE NEXT TO 013 Wendy White’s site–specific project, titled ‘We’, is about the collective “we” in consumer sloganeering. All of our choices—what to buy, what to wear, what to sell and when—help to define who we are and how we’re spoken to. Common neon signs in the United States such as “We Bake Our Own Bread”, (“bread” being a 1970s euphemism for money or cash) references the self–starting, early– rising, almost ego–centric ethos of the entrepreneur. “We Never Close”, suggests that services are consistently provided, while “We Buy Gold & Silver” speaks to the Gold Rush ideal of rarities from precious metals to contemporary art. Interspersed with the signs are free form, neon improvisations that break into abstraction. These remind us that, despite an almost boundless sense of commerce that threatens to boil us down to a series of demographic stereotypes, we remain individuals—passionate and unique.

PURPLE & GREEN @ NS16 ‘Purple & Green’ is a live improvisation show with a temporary formed rhythm section group with Pim Kersten on drums and Joris van de Moortel on bass guitar. Purple and green refers to the light karma, which will be part of the performance. Purple and green according to the bands’ bass player; “I prefer rehearsing in green light, which gives a purple spectrum after. I mostly play live in purple light, which let’s you walk out in green.” 19 September 18:30 – 19:15h

POETRY

POETRY Because the poetry program is in Dutch, all info is in Dutch as well. If you wanna know more about the program or these artists, please ask someone next to you to translate it for you.

THURSDAY 18 SEPTEMBER @ TEXTIELMUSEUM Plink Flojd selection of short films Plink Flojd is a super audio/visual collective started by David Quiles Guillo with co–founders Yoshi Sodeoka and Eric Mast. They collaborate with artists from all over the world. Plink Flojd was originally inspired by Pink Floyd, but they’re not just another tribute project. They take the homage to the next level and make a new art form. Some of their works show traces of the influences of Pink Floyd, some show none. Anything goes with Plink Flojd. 13:00 – 13:45h

Dafna Maimon : ‘Vegan Venetian’ Shot in Los Angeles, ‘Vegan Venetian’ examines the isolation of this modern city recognized for its artificiality. Utilizing internal, rambling dialogue and nonsensical movements, viewers are led through moments in the daily lives of four characters and their societal positions: narrator, actor, pizza delivery boy, and girlfriend. Existentialist crisis is examined as each character is found longing for attention and creating a sort of self–involved captivity riddled with dysfunctional behaviour. 14:00 – 14:16h

Tim Hetherington: ‘Diary’ ‘Diary’ is a highly personal and experimental film that expresses the subjective experience of Tim Hetherington’s work, and was made as an attempt to locate himself after ten years of reporting as a war correspondent. It’s a kaleidoscope of images that link our western reality to the seemingly distant worlds we see in the media. His work took him around the world, and ultimately to Libya where he was killed in a mortar attack in April 2011 14:17 – 14:37h 22

Best of Borscht #1 Borscht is an open–source collaborative dedicated to telling Miami stories. They believe in regional filmmaking. They believe in Miami. 14:37 – 14:57h

Michael Blackwood: ‘The Sensual Nature of Sound’ ‘The Sensual Nature of Sound’ portrays New York based composers/performers in terms of their musical lives. Although all four women are pioneers in American music, each composer pursues a distinct direction of her own. You will get an insight in the life of Laurie Anderson with her trademark multi–media shows, Cuban born Tania Leon who composes orchestral music, Meredith Monk who has developed a genre of opera very much on her own and Pauline Oliveros (Performing at Incubate on Monday 15 September) who draws upon the rich resources of ritual, myth, meditation, and improvisation to create a body of work that is truly visionary. 15:00h

INCUBATE ARCADE Exploration of Music and Games

BIG SCREEN LIVE GAMING @ DE NWE VORST

Videogames have come a long way since the early beginnings only a few decades ago, establishing itself firmly as part of our culture. Since the start games have been developed by individuals that were looking to push boundaries in gameplay, graphics, storytelling, sound and music. We will focus on the latter with the first ever Incubate Arcade. Together with zo-ii and WOT / Playful Arts Festival we offer you a selection of games that explore the diversity of music and sound in games.

Live afternoon with performances, game sessions on a BIG screen and dj’s. Play on a gigantic screen, while the music creators of the games perform the soundtrack live. 20 September, 15:00 - 18:00h

Audio has played a significant part in the experience, atmosphere and impact of a game. Started as 8bit bleeps and glitches, now the medium has it all: composers, orchestras, musicians, djs, producers, sound designers, concerts and extraordinary audio experiences. Sound and music design is now an established part of game development to create an optimal interactive experience. Some of the designers started experimenting with music and sound in games. We explore some of these experiments at the Incubate Arcade. During Incubate you can visit our interactive Arcade where you’ll find installations and experimental games. We’re also hosting an interactive programme at De NWE Vorst on Saturday 20 September. Join us! Curation: zo-ii, WOT (i.c.w. met Martijn Verhallen), collaboration Playful Arts Festival.

26

▲ 15.00 - 16.00h — ‘ib and obb’ Kettel performs this soundtrack live for the first time ever. 16.00 - 17.00h — ‘Proteus’/‘Panoramical’ with live soundtrack 17.00 - 18.00h — ‘Icefishing V’ with live soundtrack Grab the chance to play JS Joust and Bounden between the live sessions.

GAMES

ARTISTS AND GAME DEVELOPERS OF THE INCUBATE ARCADE ▼ FRACT Maker: Phosfiend Systems (CA) FRACT is a musical exploration game. You arrive in a forgotten place and explore the vast and unfamiliar landscape to discover the secrets of an abandoned world that was once built on sound. As you start to make sense of this strange new environment, you work to rebuild its machinery by solving puzzles and bring the world back to life by shaping sound and creating music within the game. FRACT features a beautiful open world to explore and decipher with music-based puzzles, stunning visuals, and an amazing score that evolves as you play. As you progress through the game, you unlock tools to make your own music in the FRACT studio, where you can also export and share your creations with others.

MEMORY OF A BROKEN DIMENSION Maker: DataTragedy (US) Memory of a Broken Dimension takes its inspiration from the days in which computers where still mythic devices. The game presents an extraordinary experience in which you explore an eerie, abstract and glitchy nightmare of a computer. In this ambiguous experience you’ll be guided by an uncanny, almost ghostly soundtrack, as you encounter the distorted software in various forms.

27

ICEFISHING V Maker: Nate Gallardo (UK) Icefishing V is an interactive, virtual sound installation inspired by drone, noise and glitch art. Presented as a combination of sound-art EP and video game, the player generates the composition as they explore and interact with a series of abstract environments. The game features the ability to intentionally glitch out the image and audio at will at the press of a button, distorting the soundtrack and the world Icefishing V was created as a continuation of Nate Gallardo’s Icefishing series of noise-based sonic compositions.

▲ SOUNDSELF Maker: Robin Arnott (US) SoundSelf is the collision of centuries old meditation technology with the video game trance. An exploration game about the pleasure of playing, instead of the rewards of winning. You use your voice to control the world, whilst the software sings back to you with music and visualization. This results in an elegant symmetry of image, sound and body. Turn off the lights, amp up the volume, and use your voice to fall through an odyssey of light and body.

▼ PANORAMICAL Maker: Fernando Ramallo, David Kanaga (AR / DE + US) PANORAMICAL is an album of interactive musical landscapes with analog controls. Players can alter abstract environments, gradually changing the worlds’ shapes and sounds. Every combination produce a different visual and musical environment that is generated on the fly. Interacting with the 18-dimensional space players can explore, fiddle and be immersed.

REMEMBERING Makers: Monobanda & Sonic Picnic (NL) Remembering is a poetic exploration game driven by sound. The world of Remembering is like a half forgotten dream. Strange, but also vaguely familiar. This empty mysterious place is filled with sounds that invite you to use your own imagination. Remembering is a game that leaves room for the player. By building a world based on sound instead of visuals we’ve created a place that relies on interpretation. It offers the chance to perceive it in a personal way.

140 Makers: Jeppe Carlsen, Jakob Schmid (DK) 140 is a minimalist platform game with abstract aesthetics and an amazing soundtrack. You need to become truly rhythmically aware of the soundtrack, as each level is built to the rhythm of the music. Overcome obstacles and work your way trough clever puzzles in this intricate marriage between game and beats.

28

▼ JOHANN SEBASTIAN JOUST Maker: Die Gute Fabrik (DK + US) Johann Sebastian Joust is a no-graphics, digitally-enabled playing-field game for 2 to 7 players, designed to be used with motion controllers like the Playstation Move. Try to tap the controller of your opponents, while keeping your own controller steady. The goal is to be the last player that’s still in the game. When the music is slow, the controllers are very sensitive. But when it’s quick, the players can move quickly as well and attack other players. But beware: move around your controller to quick, and you’ll fail. The music that’s guiding the tempo are selections of J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.

BOUNDEN Maker: GameOven (NL) Bounden is a highly-praised dancing game for two. It’s created by GameOven who are known for games with new, weird and special ways for people to interact with each other. And they truly succeeded with Bounden. Both you and your friend hold a phone at one end. You need to tilt the phone around a virtual ball, whilst following the path. As soon as you let your limbs participate you are dancing. A dance choreographed by Ernst Meisner of the Dutch National Ballet and music by Bart Delissen.

GAMES

▼ SOUNDODGER LIVE Maker: Studio Bean (US) SoundodgerLIVE is a physical interactive installation about moving through music. Each level is one song during which you must weave in and out of hand– choreographed bullet patterns.

CAVE! CAVE! DEUS VIDET Maker: WeAreMuesli (IT) An interactive visual novel about the search for a mysteriously disappeared boy named ‘Hoody’. Cave! Cave! Deus Videt (or Beware! Beware! God Sees) is the 2013 winner of the Bosch Art Game competition, a competition in celebration of the painter Jheronimus Bosch. As the game takes its inspiration from the work of Jheronimus Bosch, you (if you know him) already know what to expect. If not, you should know that they didn’t call him the ‘devil maker’ for nothing. Music by Monroeville Music Center feat. MEGA.

PROTEUS Maker: Ed Key, David Kanaga (UK + US) Proteus is a minimalist game of pure exploration and sublime discovery in a musical wilderness environment. There are no challenges and no goals other than those set by the player. A reactive audio mixing system allows the player to explore the environment as music.

PULSE Maker: Cipher Prime (US) Enter an absorbing world where players become part conductor, part note-captor, part multi-touch master. Tap speeding notes as they cross the radiant pulse to conduct gorgeous original melodies.

► KEYBOARD MANDALA Maker: KM Team Keyboard Mandala is a musical and colorful experience playable with a synthesizer as controller. The first player, as a traveler, wanders through an initially empty desert, using a game controller. The second one as a musician, populates the environment with objects and colours by playing the piano. 29

KARMAFLOW Maker: Karmaflow (NL) Karmaflow: The Rock Opera Videogame is part of the multidisciplinary project Karmaflow. The aim of the project is to unite music, games and theater in a unique way, experimenting with sung interactive narrative. The music of the game features international singers from bands such as Dragonforce, Cradle of Filth, Epica, Sonata Arctica, Arch Enemy and more. The symphonic sound of the score is brought by the Dutch Metropole Orchestra.

FROM BIG BANG TO HEAT DEATH — A Performance Odyssey Upcoming Dutch performance artists are placing theater outside the venue, the actor out of the man. They’re art to the streets, without the … of street art. It’s highly visual. Surreal. Realistic. Moving. Staring, standing, floating. It’s cutting-edge or heavily conservative. Mind-blowing or teethgrindinglyboring. Based in De NWE Vorst, they’re creating performances throughout the city on unexpected sites. Look out for the signature cart!

At Incubate, we try to offer kicks and contemplation right next to each other. We like to learn new things while having fun; about music and art and all the wonderful things that come with it. That’s why we’ve set up six days filled with great artists, speakers, bloggers, critics, volunteers, supporters, journalists, teachers, politicians and others. They’re here to talk, to show, to learn and to hear from you. All this in splendid café with comfortable chairs, fresh sandwiches and great coffee. Come to Incubate Café and join the conversation!

Artists interviewing artists: artist and influential art blogger Niek Hendrix talks with Luke Jerram, who’s the creator of ‘Play Me I’m Yours’ (Incubate 2011) and ‘Lullaby’ (Incubate 2014)) about what it means to create art for, in and together with a city. Wednesday 17 September Hear the new councillor for culture in Tilburg being interviewed live about what art and culture can contribute to a city and society as a whole. Saturday 20 September On the last festival day, Incubate’s very own Vincent Koreman (artistic director) and Joost Heijthuijsen (chief developer) look back at this year’s Incubate and give the down-low on their favourite artists… and maybe even spill some beans about next year? Sunday 21 September

And much, much more. Live columns, Pecha Kucha, more interviews, pop quizzes: there is more happening in Incubate Café than these pages can contain, so please check the latest schedule on our website, in the free Incubate app or on one of the old fashioned flyers at Dudok. 30.000 MONKIES  BE indie, noise rock With a name so joyful and artwork this colourful and bright, it’s very plausible you’d be confused when listening to 30.000 Monkies. Their riff–oriented, sludgy guitars and nonsensical lyrics are frequently shredded harshly to pieces by noise. But these young fellows sometimes brighten up their songs with a catchy synth that’ll make you think of life’s delights, right before they drag you back to the cold depths. ► Part of project: Vi.be presents Wednesday 17 September, Cul de Sac

▲ 65DAYSOFSTATIC  UK post–rock, electronica, instrumental This year, 65daysofstatic celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album The Fall of Math, a post–rock classic. By taking elements from math rock and glitchy electronic music the band created their own niche within the genre. Since then, they kept gradually changing by drawing more from electronics. It’s a band that doesn’t need words but uses the movements of their waves of guitar, synthesizers and complex drums to tell a story. Their story. Friday 19 September, Midi

39

A MILLION SQUEEKS WILL DO YOU NO HARM  NL noise, ambient A Million Squeeks Will Do You No Harm is a one–man ambient/noise band from Eindhoven, founded by Mike Dobber. He breathes noise and has played in various bands that take loudness to the extreme. With AMSWDYNH, he mixes noise, ambient and drones by using various voice and sound recordings. He gives those the good old grinder treatment by manipulating them with various effect pedals. ► Part of project: Barreuh Records showcase Saturday 20 September, De Boemel

AARON DILLOWAY  US experimental, avant–garde, noise You might know Aaron Dilloway as a founding member of no–compromise noise predators Wolf Eyes. As a solo artist, he released an impressive amount of records, ranging from calming sounds and field recordings to hellish noisescapes. His most famous work is Modern Jester (2012) which was built around tape loops that he constructed and manipulated, transforming them into a monument of psychedelic noise with a strangely hypnotic effect. An absolute classic within its absurdist niche. Monday 15 September, Extase

THE ACID MERCENARIES  BE electronic, acid techno, dance The experienced DJ duo called The Acid Mercenaries bring some raw rhythms and heavy basslines to produce a surprising live–set. Powered by industrial and minimal elements, these guys bring fresh techno and acid music with a great passion for vintage sounds. ► Part of project: L.I.E.S. & Bunker label nights Friday 19 September, Hall of Fame

ACTION BEAT + G.W. SOK  UK noise rock Action Beat have a reputation of blasting seemingly formless noise with impressive might. Their jams consist solely of improvisation, but where others try to find each other during these jams, Action Beat start an instrumental pub fight. They are currently touring with G.W. Sok, known as the frontman of The Ex. They released an album together this April, called A Remarkable Machine and yes, there will be noise rock, and overwhelming vocals. Monday 15 September, TextielMuseum

ADERLATING  NL ambient, metal There’s no light at the end of the tunnel as you are drawn to the depths while roaring demons poke you with their pitchforks and other gruesome entities rip your flesh of your body. At least the ritualistic music of Aderlating is playing in the back, with their low–frequenced and blackened horrorscapes, screams of agony and skull crushing noisy ambiances. ► Part of project: Tartarus Records Presents Saturday 20 September, V39

40

ADRIFT  ES metal, sludge Adrift summons waves of heavy riffs straight from Leviathan’s sea of darkness. The immense sound of their sludgy guitars and blackened vocals that slice right through the soul are an intense experience for any listener. Their overwhelming live shows earned this band a well respected reputation in their home country. Highly recommended for fans of Neurosis, Isis and Mastodon. Sunday 21 September, Cul de Sac

AGRIMONIA  SE metal Doom crust punk band Agrimonia tells you a story about how life is far from how it was meant to be. They build the tension of this story with beautifully sweeping compositions. Blast beats, keyboards and stunning soundscapes are the cover of their storybook that will fully leave you in awe. ► Part of project: Doomstar Bookings Presents Saturday 20 September, Extase

◄ AIDAN BAKER  CAN ambient / drone Canadian musician Aidan Baker makes so many albums; it’s impossible to keep up with. Between 2000 and 2009 he released over 80 albums. Baker is a classically trained flutist and taught himself to play the guitar, the drums and various other instruments. Baker makes experimental ambient music. It ranges from peaceful to very intrusive. He stated that his last album was inspired by various myths and folktales about female water spirits. In the session at Consouling Sounds Aidan wil read excerpts from his book. ► Part of project: Consouling Sounds @ Incubate, Aidan Baker in Residence Tuesday 16 September, Consouling Store Tuesday 16 September, Paradox

PROJECT: AIDAN BAKER IN RESIDENCE During Incubate 2014, drone artist Aidan Baker will be performing six times, in various formations: “It is an honour to be offered a residency at this year’s edition of Incubate. This is something I have not yet had the experience of doing. My experience of festivals is more often than not limited to the single day on which I am performing and then it’s back on the road, on to the next show. Spending a full five days at Incubate, then, will not only be a novelty but an opportunity, both as a performer and an attendee, to properly experience the atmosphere and sensibility of the festival. And of course an opportunity to do what I like most – share music with people, in a variety of contexts and different projects. Certainly my projects may all be rooted in atmospheric, drone–based music, but each performance will present a different take on the genre, offering different listening and physical experiences. And that it should be at Incubate, one of Europe’s great festivals, ensures the experience will be a good one.” Nadja (Monday 15 September) Aidan Baker a performance and a poetry reading (Tuesday 16 September)

AIDAN BAKER/THISQUIETARMY: HYPNODRONE ENSEMBLE  CAN post–rock, drone Multi–talented musician Aidan Baker and the experimental guitar–based project Thisquietarmy collaborated on several releases, toured together and shared stage numerous times. They do so again at this edition of Incubate. But there’s more; For this ‘Hypnodrone Ensemble’ performance, they will also be joined by multiple drummers to present a collaborative, semi–improvisational piece exploring atmospheric guitar drones and propulsive polyrhythms. ► Part of project: Aidan Baker in Residence Friday 19 September, Paradox

AKKORD  UK electronic, dance, techno, idm Akkord was founded as a Manchester–based collective of artists by Synkro and Indigo. They gained a small cult following by just moulding their ideas and experiences into a skin–crawling, pulsating but also extremely danceable piece of sound design. Akkord seemed to have defined their distinctive sound by releasing their first full album last year. It displayed their stylistic approach on UK bass and industrial techno, polishing it with a melted–down metallic feel. Friday 19 September, De NWE Vorst

ALICE IN THE CITIES  DE post–rock This Berlin–based trio creates music solely within the instrumental post–rock genre, playing minimal compositions for imaginary films. The name Alice in the Cities is a reference to a 70s cinema classic. Don’t expect heavy compositions, but bright, simple and compact songs that wouldn’t be out of place as a soundtrack for Wender’s films. Friday 19 September, Paradox

Nadja + Uochi Toki (Wednesday 17 September) Caudal (Thursday 18 September) Aidan Baker/Thisquietarmy: Hypnodrone Ensemble (Friday 19 September)

ALPHA WHALE  BE psychedelic rock, surf An alpha whale is a former alfa male who gained a bit of weight and is therefore no longer at the top of human coolness. But the band Alpha Whale wouldn’t care, because they always sound cool. These four Belgians are looking for mind–expanding sounds with their sun–exposed psychedelic blues, surf and country. The weather is an important theme in their work, and indeed it’s easy to picture yourself on the beach while playing a guitar (or a girl). ►Part of project: Vi.be presents Thursday 18 September, Cul de Sac

ANCIENT OCEAN  US ambient / drone Ancient Ocean is the pseudonym of John Bohannon, who is positioned in Brooklyn. He uses his electric guitar and samples to create subcutaneous, atmospheric soundscapes that are as comforting as they are sinister. Bohannon released his third full album ‘Wien’ this year which features two long dark and meditative tracks. Saturday 20 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder

► ANGEL OLSEN  US singer–songwriter, folk She got known from her contribution on the album of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, but Angel Olsen is here to stay. She uses a seemingly simple chord progression and her lyrics are as abstract as they can be. But Angel Olsen gets away with it. Angel Olsen haunts you with her fragile, beautiful, almost ghostly voice and her flawless yodelling sound. It’s not without reason this is her second time playing Incubate. Friday 19 September, Theaters Tilburg – Schouwburg

42

ANGSTGEGNER  NL hardcore punk There’s not much we know about Angstgegner, but we sure know their 2–track demo is great as hell! We also know the song The Bearded Lady is not about Conchita Wurst. And we know that it’s brought to us more genuinely than the Eurovision songcontest winner. Angstgegner brings us hardcore straight from their souls. Brutal as a real angstgegner should sound like. ►Part of project: Black Death Records Presents Sunday 21 September, V39

ARVIND GANGA  NL ambient / drone, improv Arvind Ganga is a guitar player from The Hague, the Netherlands. He freely shops around in the fields of drone, noise, north Indian classical music, free improvisation, sound art and experimental rock. With a few effects, a handful of objects, and his trusty red guitar, he molds this into a loosely structured chaotic mess that is bathing in the rays of a deep red sun. Ethereal noise with a punk–improv attitude. Friday 19 September, NS16

MUSIC A – B

THE ASTEROID #4  US psychedelic Psych enthusiasts will have seen this name on the bills of festivals like Austin Psych Fest and Liverpool Psych Fest this year. This diverse rock band explores the far sides of genres like psych rock, power pop and ’60s pop. Get your psych on, and come space out to The Asteroid number four. Sunday 21 September, Extase

AUDACITY  US garage By playing at parties and delivering fun and catchy tunes with memorable hooks, the garage band Audacity that rose from the Californian suburbs quickly became one of the most promising bringers of teen anthems. So: good news for the ones who are looking for eternal youth, because their timeless songs form an emotional, fist pumping rollercoaster that make everyone feel young again from the first second up to the last. Thursday 18 September, Cul de Sac

AUROCH  CAN metal, death metal This death metal trio was spawned straight from the mountains of madness. Their music is often described as ‘Lovecraftian death metal’, and when it comes to creating a world of unsettling horror and extreme aggressiveness they sure have a lot in common with the great writer of horror fiction. Forget the over polished new takes on death metal, Auroch is all about reviving the brutal ’80s underground with maniacal speed, technicality and shrieks like they are possessed by Cthulhu himself. Monday 15 September, Little Devil

AZAGHAL  FIN metal, black metal Azaghal is named after a dwarf king in Tolkien’s mythology. After seventeen years of dedicated service you could call them veterans of black metal. Azaghal are not the biggest name in the scene, but true black metal lovers will know them for sure. This Finnish anti–Christian metal band is known for their fast, really aggressive, and nihilistic music. If you love unpolished, uncompromising and passionate black metal, this is a must–see. ► Part of project: Finland Music Presents Friday 19 September, Extase

BAABA  PL free jazz, electronica We don’t expect you to be down at Incubate, but if it happens to be so, you’d better pay a visit to Baaba’s performance. They’re known for their superb shows in Polish underground clubs. A lot of synths and saxophone on a jazz rhythm and brought to you with a lot of energy. Baaba will make you dance, move and smile in seconds. ►Part of project: Polska na Incubate Sunday 21 September, Paradox

43

BAD VISION  AUS garage, rock ’n roll, punk rock This foursome was formed in 2011 in order to make some noise, which they accomplished by creating some raw abundant yet melodic guitar noise. With energetic vocals and perfectly imperfect guitar sounds, Bad Vision lives up to a recognizable mixture of garage, post–punk and proto–punk. The band describes themselves best as a dirty takeaway on a Friday night: it hits the spot and goes well with beer. Sunday 21 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder

PROJECT: BARREUH RECORDS SHOWCASE Underground label Barreuh focuses on experimental music, noise and other sonic wonders. It presents three artists on the roster on Saturday September 20th: capcap...cap, LL presents… and A Million Squeeks Will Do You No Harm. Saturday 20 September, De Boemel

BAPTISM  FIN metal, black metal Amongst the Finnish shadows, there’s one that brings all godless depths to light. Baptism is a prayer for esoteric Satanism, orchestrated by aggression and the grim arts of melancholy. Mainly being the solo project of Lord Sargofagian, this black metal ceremony is one with a sincere sense of passion, and draws you into the world and mind of this Lord’s own tribe as told by occult hymns. ► Part of Project: Finland Music Presents Friday 19 September, Extase

BARDO POND  US psychedelic rock During their twenty years existence, Bardo Pond developed a unique musical aesthetic. Their approach to psychedelic space rock also found acceptance in the many side projects in which the Gibbons brothers committed themselves. In Bardo Pond, the mother of all these projects, it gets combined with the thin voice and flute of Isobel Sollentuna Berger. And to be honest: that’s just the best sound. Saturday 20 September, De NWE Vorst

44

BASIC HOUSE  UK avant–garde, noise, ambient, techno Basic House is the moniker of producer Stephen Bishop from Teesside (UK), who also runs his own label called Opal Tapes which is specialized in cassette tapes. Along with the artists signed to his label, he represents an underground wave of cutting–edge electronic music. Bishop is a sonic adventurer who’s experiments with rhythm and texture result in a wide pallet of interesting, obscure and deep sounds. Sunday 21 September, Paradox

MUSIC B

BEAR BONES, LAY LOW  BE ambient/drone, psychedelic Hailing from Venezuela, now long time based in Belgium, Bear Bones, Lay Low is the moniker Ernesto González uses to explore shifting psychedelic moods in electronic sound. Active since being a teenager in the Belgian noise underground, González’s music has evolved from spontaneous bedroom noise/drone jams to colorful synthesizer tunes where library–esque vibes meet entrancing rhythms, dubby use of effects and plenty of freak outs. Saturday 20 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder

BEAR RUN  BE indie, pop It started as a one man band of Xavier de Clercq, but later drums, double bass, violin and keys got added. Bear Run are able to create a special vibe with their music. They have a soft, friendly sound with a schizophrenic edge. Sometimes their music can be ominous and at other times it’s playful and sweet. You can hear vaguely that they are influenced by artists like Bon Iver and Patrick Watson. ► Part of project: Vi.be presents Sunday 21 September, Extase

BEAU WANZER  US electronic, industrial, ambient, dance Beau Wanzer lives in Chicago. He is one half of Mutant Beat Dance and one half of Streetwalker. But Wanzer als is 100% of his own project called, ehm.. Beau Wanzer! He spends the majority of his days sifting through paraffin embedded tissues and reading old copies of Fangoria. ► Part of project: L.I.E.S. & Bunker label nights Saturday 20 September, Dudok

45

◄ THE BESNARD LAKES  CAN indie, shoegaze, post–rock This four piece, centered around husband/wife Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, pull shoegaze and dream–pop out of the body of water that is The Besnard Lakes. Their songs fluctuate between haunting and romantic, with beautiful vocal harmonies, epic swooshing violins, thundering drums and sparse guitar melodies all seeming to come from the depths of their souls. All of their albums were nominated for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize. Must see for fans of Bon Iver! Wednesday 17 September, Paradox

BISMUTH  UK doom, drone No orchestra or collective here. Just an amplifier worshipping, sonically terrorizing bass/drum two–piece, who form a perfect example that only two can sound like a bloodthirsty army of the dead. Prepare yourself for a visceral experience by listening to their blackened screeches, slow shifting mountains of riffs and an instrumental sound that’s heavy and distorted enough to break down any holy temple. ► Part of project: Tartarus Records Presents Saturday 20 September, V39

PROJECT: BLACK DEATH RECORDS PRESENTS Black Death Records are from the province of Noord–Brabant and have been putting out great punk, hardcore and stoner albums since the beginning of this millennium, with Otis’ ‘Otis Christ Superstar’ as most recent and highly praised release. Otis, Angstgegner, The Unborn, Zachte G Harde P, Schelles. Sunday 21 September, V39

MUSIC B – C

▲ BLACK OAK  NL indie, folk With great admiration for each other’s music, I Am Oak and The Black Atlantic decided to join forces. This led to the establishment of a breathtaking and enchanting Black Oak EP. Their co–operation is the beginning of a very fine and warming elaboration of folk pop music which is powered by beautiful changing chords and heavenly vocals. Sunday 21 September, Pauluskerk

BLACK WIZARD  CAN psychedelic rock This Canadian quartet knows how to play catchy riffs with heavy–hitting rhythms. They released their first full album ‘Young Wisdom’ last year; a tower of stoner/doom–heaviness and ’70s hard rock–grooves. Unless sharing the stage with similar acts like Radio Moscow and Weedeater, Black Wizards still stands on its own with a unique vibe and stage charisma that can easily turn every venue into the inside of a boiling lava lamp. Sunday 21 September, Little Devil

BLOUSE  US indie, dream pop, shoegaze, electronic This fairly popular band creates sparkling yet dark and ethereal yet driving pop music which is often compared to the sound of bands like Beach House, Broadcast and Stereolab. The subcutaneous electronic sounds and dreamy female vocals lead towards some compelling sweltering indie pop music. Tuesday 16 September, Midi 47

BOMBINO  NE psychedelic rock, african, blues Renowned media called Tuareg–singer Bombino’s 2013–release ‘Nomad’ “the most exciting blues album of the year” (Rolling Stone) and “utterly, utterly fantastic” (BBC). Born and raised in Niger, Bombino is a member of the Tuareg. His dazzling live performance and virtuosity on the guitar have earned him comparisons to Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Neil Young and Jerry Garcia, though local influences make his sound one–of–a–kind. Sunday 21 September, Dudok

BORED NOTHING  AUS indie, lo–fi Bored Nothing, who haven’t played in Holland before, aren’t reinventing the wheel, but who cares when you play such enjoyable fuzzy guitar pop? The group is centred around songwriter Fergus Miller, who wrote his songs out of boredom – a recurring theme in his work – on a 4–track. Friday 19 September, Little Devil

CAIRO LIBERATION FRONT  NL electro cha3bi, electronic, dance Dutch based dj–collective who’s bringing you the most exciting sounds from the popular neighbourhoods of Cairo, better known as electro cha3bi: a unique mix between traditional Arabic rhythms and sounds from Western genres as hiphop, r&b and electro. Started just a year ago and after they got featured by media like New York Times and The Guardian it seems like they’re conquering every city all over Europe with their unique sound and energetic live performance. ► Part of project: Eurabia Thursday 18 September, Extase

CAPCAP...CAP  NL new wave capcap…cap grew up under the smoke of the industrial city of Eindhoven. The atmosphere in this city played a sole part in the development of their musical style: dark and new wave, trademarked by the use of synthesizers, hypnotizing bass, looping guitar effects and electronic drums. Capcap...cap tries to be more than a band, they try to immerse their spectators in a total experience. ► Part of project: Barreuh Records showcase Saturday 20 September, De Boemel

CAUDAL  CAN ambient / drone Why buy an expensive ticket to space when Caudal can lift you to similar heights with their cosmic mixture of krautrock, ambient and post–punk? The trio, that features multi–instrumentalist Aidan Baker, explores universal depths with their steady and spellbinding rhythms, leaving enough empty space for Baker to overlay with his hypnotic layers of guitar. Do androids dream of electric guitars? ► Part of project: Aidan Baker in Residence Thursday 18 September, Paradox

CARNE  FR metal, sludge, noise rock Carne from Lyon, France, formed in 2008 to create an overwhelming mix of sludge inspired noise rock with hardcore influences. The guitarist’s vocals are fueled by a boiling point combined with many, many beers. But don’t think these guys will calm down after releasing their wrath, since it will only return with even more ferocious fury. Saturday 20 September, Little Devil

CAVE  US psychedelic rock, krautrock The Chicago–based Cave (with members of the amazing Warhammer 48k) makes it look so easy playing in tradition of the vintage kraut, space and psychedelic music that’s based on instrumental jams and hypno repetition. But you don’t even have to listen closely to hear that they sound much more adventurous and exciting than that. Droning keyboards, funk, spacey guitars and full–blown riffs – all in service of mind–expansion, of course. It all blends so well together, like mac ‘n’ cheese. Sunday 21 September, Extase

► CARTER TUTTI VOID  UK electronic, techno, industrial Incubate is extremely proud to host this unique performance by two of electronic music’s true pioneers and one of its new trail blazers. Said The Quietus of the first and only performance to date: “…a warm embrace, creating a deep connection… Carter at the back manipulates the electronics while on either flank, Void scratches noise with bowed guitar and Tutti plays while singing vocals that she mangles and distorts… there is no nihilism in this noise, nothing but a deep and wonderful sense of love.” ► Part of project: Female pioneers of electronic music Thursday 18 September, 013 – Jupiler Zaal

MUSIC C

CHAD VANGAALEN  CAN indie, singer–songwriter Canadian illustrator, musician and animator Chad VanGaalen takes you on an adventurous trip through his distinctive and admirable creativity. After releasing some independent handmade CDs, he now has a catalogue full of original and experimental songs with which the multi– instrumentalist crosses various musical genres ranging from electronic to folk to indie rock music. Monday 15 September, Paradox

CHARNIA  BE sludge, doom Charnia, young wolves from the Waasland in Belgium, have been making quite an impression in the underground live scene since 2012. Their mixture of sludge and post metal, combined with ambient and drone elements, makes up for a gripping listening experience. What seems like an odious wall of sound at face value, keeps on revealing its inner–strentgh and inner beauty with each listening session. This album will be released at Incubate 2014, exclusive pre–sale in the Consouling Sounds Store. ► Part of project: Consouling Sounds @ Incubate Saturday 20 September, Consouling Store

CHENG–YU WU  TW classical At Incubate, The Taiwanese Cheng–Yu Wu will play a solo programme on various flutes, playing music from composers from all over the world who were inspired by poems from the Chinese Tang dynasty. He plays transverse flute and baroque flute and makes music for the Goudsbloemduo and CVA Trio. ► Part of project: De Link sessions Friday 19 September, Consouling Store

49

CHICALOYOH  FR ambient/drone Chicaloyoh is the project of multi– instrumentalist Alice Dourlen. As can be heard on her first full debut album ‘Folie Sacrée’ that came out last year, she has an ear for crafting minimalistic folk, driven by a ritualistic rhythm. Her performance is quite subtle, slowly building a haunting realm of organ and guitar, which she all plays herself. Most important however is her ghostly voice which often recalls a comparison with Nico. Thursday 18 September, Paradox

COILGUNS  CH hardcore/punk Like a real coil gun, Coilguns have a habit of discharging chaotic coils of hardcore riffs. Seemingly chaotic, because even though this happens at extremely high pace, these guys from Switzerland perfectly calculated their raw produced vibes into complex mechanisms. Fury like this can only come from being stuck in a no man’s land, which is one of the concepts their lyrics are based on. Saturday 20 September, Cul de Sac

PROJECT: CONSOULING SOUNDS @ INCUBATE In their mobile office Belgian label Consouling Sounds bring you the best of what they have to offer: an independent label, an agency, a shop and a coffee bar. They will also record the live performance by Aidan Baker and produce a release for sale by the end of the festival. Live performances by TYSMFYH, Aidan Baker (reading), Sardonis, Kiss The Anus of a Black Cat, Nordmann, DelvitaGroup, Charnia + Monnik + Innerwoud, Thisquietarmy, and an exhibition by Nicky Hellemans. Consouling Store

CONTAINER  US electronic, techno, industrial, noise Ren Schofield, who has his roots in the harsh noise scene, strips techno from all its flesh and replaces it with a metal armor of industrial heaviness and sonic decay. With relentless industrial grooves and a thrilling raw sound that draws from full on noise, he forces the listener into submission. You’ll have no other choice but to dance once your helpless brain is augmented with the noisy aesthetics and the repetition of Container’s vital and pulverizing techno. Sunday 21 September, De NWE Vorst

CORRUPT MORAL ALTAR  UK metal, punk These four guys from the UK known as Corrupt Moral Altar create some intense obscenely grindcore mixed with a bit of sludge and crust. They still manage to stay remarkably catchy while producing some hard hitting music which occasionally leans towards metal influenced grind and sludge hardcore. ► Part of project: Doomstar Bookings Presents Saturday 20 September, Extase

► THE COSMIC DEAD  UK psychedelic rock The Cosmic Dead, a self–proclaimed Hawkwind tribute band, makes classic psychedelic music and krautrock sound very much alive. Since their formation in 2010 they are releasing albums every year and in 2011 they performed live with Can’s Damo Suzuki, an absolute icon in krautrock. Extended jams often reach great lengths, with their 40–minute song Father Sky, Mother Earth as hallucinatory magnum opus. It’s hard to find another band that will bring you closer to a spaced–out eargasm. Friday 19 September, Little Devil

50

COUSINS  CAN rock, shoegaze With their greasy guitar lines and electrifying singing, Cousins turn every note they play into a vigorous explosion of fuzz and energy, but also sweetness and simplicity. They released their new album ‘The Halls Of Wickwire’ this year. It’s produced by Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck/Metz) and a product of refining their sound and just playing their hearts out during their long tours. Monday 15 September, Cul de Sac

CRANK STURGEON  US noise American noise artist Crank Sturgeon, will do multiple ten minute guerrilla sets at various Incubate venues every day of the week.

CROWN  FR metal, doom, sludge By implementing programmed mechanical drum patterns in their music, this French guitar duo behind Crown manages to create an annihilating sound that alternates between organic atmospheres and desolate, bleak metal. Music that can be raw and hellish, but also clean enough for you to hear their thrilling compositions that sink into melancholic depths. In a future world where cyborgs pulverize the earth to apocalyptic ruins, Crown would be king. Saturday 20 September, Little Devil

MUSIC C – D

CROWS  UK indie, post–punk Did you know that crows can eat over a thousand kinds of food? The London–based CROWS will devour you alive on stage as well. With only a couple of official singles in their catalogue and an own label called Dolphinarium, they are already making (pitch black) waves in the circuit with their gloomy take on rock ‘n roll and ominous stage presence. With music this possessive it’s recommended to have an exorcist waiting for you at home. Sunday 21 September, Cul de Sac

CRYWANK  UK folk, sadcore There are people who listen to happy tunes to feel better and people who listen to sad music for the same reason. The duo Crywank is obviously for the second group. It started as a one man project by James Clayton. He began writing folk–punk influenced songs on acoustic guitar after a heavy break up, which resulted in the album ‘James is going to die soon’. He’s exploring his inner sadness ever since, converting his emotions in sorrowful tunes that are just as cynical as his album titles. Sunday 21 September, Cul de Sac

DE KONING DER DIEREN  NL singer–songwriter The one–man project De Koning Der Dieren performed during Incubated last April, and we asked him back to once again lift us up with his repertoire of dirty yet hilarious Dutch songs. With a remarkable outfit, story related songs, cheerful guitar playing and a suitcase filled with random objects, De Koning Der Dieren truly looks like a troubadour. His performance is surely suitable for everyone who enjoys a little laughter. Well, if you understand Dutch. Saturday 20 September, Pauluskerk

Wait until you’ve heard Death Alley’s music as this ’70s sound will blow you away instantly. And so will their live performance at Incubate. ► Part of project: Noisey Recommends Saturday 20 September, Little Devil

▼ DEATHCRUSH  NO noise rock John Doran, The Quietus: “Deathcrush are one of the coolest bands I’ve ever seen. They know that the spirit of Sonic Youth is the thing worth preserving not slavish impersonations of Murray Street riffs. By summoning the spirit of Glenn Branca, No Wave, the punk feminism of Valerie Solanas, a cheeky engagement with hip hop and an aesthetic that raises trash culture to religion, they have created riot music for the 21st Century.” Nuff said. ► Part of project: Norwegian Invasion Wednesday 17 September, Little Devil

DODECAHEDRON  NL metal, black metal And behold, out of the deepest pits of the black metal movement came Dodecahedron. A five headed beast that speaks through razor–sharp dissonance and is crowned with the radiance of a thousand suns. The source below fuels it with cold hate and chaos. It’s constant on the move, ever shifting shapes, never to be captured. If you thought Deathspell Omega was the end of all, gaze upon this creature; the offspring of Mayhem. Confront it at your own peril. Wednesday 17 September, Midi

DELVITAGROUP  BE jazz, improv DelvitaGroup does not shy away from cross–over projects. They combine jazz and classical music on a higher level. DOTLIGHTS  NL ambient / drone, post–rock Romantic post–rock melodies surf the glitchy sounds coming from Dotlights’ laptop. Concentrated he watches his fingers, making sure every bit of tone is squeezed out of his instrument. Meanwhile his laptop, by the use of sampled instruments and field recordings, oozes atmospheric background sounds. This combination creates one hypnotizing experience. Sunday 21 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder

DOUBLE VETERANS  BE garage Two guitars and a drum kit is all that the Belgium band Double Veterans needs to create some furious, psychedelic garage rock. Unpolished, hard at times and always dirty. They get their inspiration out of the simple things in life: cheap beer, girls, skateboarding, vinyl, cartoons and games. The band doesn’t exist that long, but the members are certainly no beginners – they got a lot of experience in other bands and after a year of performing, they are on full force with an album out and the small hit ‘Beach Life’. Wednesday 17 September, Cul de Sac

EKOPLEKZ/EMMPLEKZ  UK electronic, experimental eMMplekz is a musical symbiosis formed by sound–crafters Ekoplekz (Nick Edwards) and Mordant Music (Ian Hicks/Baron Mordant). They both share the love for analogue equipment and soundscapes that mysteriously creep up to you. It’s not a surprise that they get along so well on stage. The creation of an ominous atmosphere combined with sheets of spoken word– declamations swirl through echoes and distortion which entangles in a constant fight for the leading position. Saturday 20 September, De NWE Vorst

55

ELECTRIC EYE  NO psychedelic rock Electric Eye play droned out psych–rock inspired by the blues, India and the ever more expanding universe. On the band’s inspirational mix tape, you will probably find songs from the The Black Angels, Wooden Shjips and Pink Floyd’s Live in Pompeii. Their debut album ‘Pick–up, Lift–off, Space, Time’ released early 2013 and ever since the band’s international carreer went sky high. Hop on this rocket to psych space and lose gravity at Incubate. ► Part of project: Norwegian Invasion Sunday 21 September, Dudok

▲ EMPLOYED TO SERVE  UK post–hardcore, power violence Maybe you’ve heard enough happy–go– round bands for today, or are fed up with happiness in general. Still, you’ll enjoy yourself at their show for sure. ► Part of project: Holy Roar Records Presents Friday 19 September, V39

EUGENE CHADBOURNE  US experimental After being inspired by Jimmy Hendrix, innovative guitarist Eugene Chadbourn began experimenting with distortion pedals and fuzzboxes. This ultimately led to Chadbourn’s impressive style containing free improvisation, equal parts of protest songs and avant garde jazz/country topped off by notable, squeaky vocals. With his vast body of work, Chadbourne has earned following in the indie rock world. Sunday 21 September, Pauluskerk

Despite the fact that Exivious plays songs that are entirely instrumental, their sound is catchy and rich with melancholic melodies. Friday 19 September, Midi

FALLOCH  UK metal Despite being in the center of Tilburg, there’s still a way to get deeply connected with the nature of Scotland. Inspired by its landscapes and traditional music, the haunting atmosphere Falloch creates with their post–metal is one out of nostalgia and sorrow. Walk through highlands and forests, stay in an isolated cottage on the Isle Of Skye or have a cold swim in Loch Lomond. Sunday 21 September, Little Devil 56

PROJECT: FINLAND MUSIC PRESENTS Almost everyone knows that Norway and black metal go hand in hand. Only the elite however are aware of the impact the Finnish black metal bands have made on that obscure genre since the beginning of this era. From behind the shadows they have blended sheer power with haunting melodies to bring us the most vile and razorsharp black metal ever witnessed with Sargeist, True Black Dawn, Azaghal and Baptism. Friday 19 September

FIST CITY  CAN indie, punk rock Named after country star Loretta Lynn’s break–up song, Fist City’s a Canadian four piece with a penchant for churning out music that screeches and rings with the blood–rush of a night crime yet charms with sugary sweet pop jangles and kool surf sleeze. Their music has been described as “pop songs clouded in a lo–fi basement show sheen”; a blend of post–punk and dark–surf, with a twinge of pop. Fists in the air and expect the unexpected crowdsurfer. Friday 19 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder 57

FRIGHT EYE  DK garage rock, punk Fright Eye is a punk band from Denmark with members from Urban Achievers and Narcosatanicos. Their songs are short, fast and filled with energy. Friday 19 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder

◄ FULL PUPP  NO dance There is not only amazing metal and noise from Norway, but also some really danceable music! Magnus International and Blackbelt Andersen are two of Prins Thomas’ co–pilots on the Full Pupp club nights. This year, the party visits London, Berlin, and now you can check them out in Tilburg during Incubate! The Full Pupp sound is all–encompassing, including disco, house, techno, combined with things you never would expect to find yourself dancing to. ► Part of project: Norwegian Invasion Saturday 20 September, Carpe Diem

GALG  NL metal Galg (Dutch for ‘gallows’) grabs you by the throat and will leave you hanging for a bit until you start to hallucinate about horror– cult films like Begotten and Tombs of the Blind Dead. They draw influences from black metal, doom, noise and dark ambient and build their songs around improvisation, resulting in wide and light–consuming voids. They say that they are happy individuals who find their inspiration in the nihilism of everyday reality. ► Part of project: Tartarus Records Presents Saturday 20 September, V39

GARETH DICKSON  UK folk, singer–songwriter Songwriter Gareth Dickson constructs a ghostly realm on his acoustic guitar that seems to come deep down from his consciousness. In combination with his voice, his ambient–like songcrafting assimilates extraordinary notes that form a constant struggle between bleakness and warmth. When Vashti Bunyan noticed his distinctive style of playing, she took him on tour as her guitarist. He once released an album with Nick Drake covers, leaving no doubt that Drake’s soul lives on and inspires Dickson. Saturday 20 September, Pauluskerk

GGU:LL  NL metal, doom When they delivered their Sunday punch last year at Incubate you met this four piece unprepared. We both know this time you won’t be taken over so easily by their crushing tidal wave of sound. Until you find out: their new material is even darker than before, with riffs as heavy as elephants. It’s not a sunshine parade; there’s no euphoria, no light of love, no higher ground. Just doom. Bow down, for this is Ggu:ll and they’re coming to conquer again. None can resist. Behind them only wasteland. Wednesday 17 September, Extase

► GAZELLE TWIN  US electronic, electronica If you listen to the music of Gazelle Twin and think that it’s dark, avantgarde and edgy, you’d have to check out her videos. Elizabeth Bernholz knows how to keep her audience focussed, both visually and musically. The cold industrial beats and haunting vocals make the music of Gazelle Twin scary and danceable at the same time. Perfect for setting the mood of this evening with among others Carter Tutti Void. ► Part of project: Noisey Recommends, Female pioneers of electronic music Thursday 18 September, 013 – Kleine Zaal

GERYON  US metal Geryon pushes the boundaries of technical/ avant–garde death metal with colossal might, using only bass and drums. Together, they (Nicholas McMaster & Lev Weinstein) form the rhythm section of Krallice, but don’t think this is a slightly undressed version of this black metal band: Geryon is a force itself with its low toned fuzzed out riffs and time changes. The mythical giant that Geryon got its name from has three heads, but the band only needs two to inflict similar overpowerment. Thursday 18 September, Extase 58

PROJECT: GLOBAL ACTIVISM Just like the past couple of years, we collaborate with Hivos once again in bringing non–Western producers to Incubate so they can work with Western producers to learn from each other. ► GOAT  SE psychedelic rock Hailing from Korpilombolo, Sweden, psychedelic worldbeat band Goat pursues the very remote village’s legend that inhabitants were dedicated to the worship and practices of voodoo. Since Christian crusaders tried to burn out this non– Christian ritual, survivors cursed the village as they fled. To date, Korpilombolo is still haunted by this curse. Performances of Goat include many aspects of the original voodoo ritual, making their shows one of the most mind blowing things you’ll ever experience. THE LOWEST STANDARD  NL indie, emo, acoustic, pop punk A project formed by frontman Daniel Calder, rooted in punk/indie, and drenched in early 90’s emo. Raw emotion with a soothing undercurrent is what defines this act. Friday 19 September, De Boemel

MAGIK MARKERS  US garage rock, noise rock Magik Markers played with Sonic Youth and their music sure has that same Confusion Is Sex–aesthetic of sonic lunacy. Their musical landscape contains ‘80s experimental rock inspired beating, scraping and bleating instruments and hypnotic beats, all sewed together by angsty and wispy vocals. MARIA MINERVA  ES electronic, electronica Just let yourself go on the dance floor. The Estonian miss Minerva will guide you by connecting the avant–pop dots and forming a spectral mixture of lo–fi shoegaze and handmade dance beats. Happiness has found us. ► Part of project: Female pioneers of electronic music Thursday 18 September, 013 – Foyer

MARIE DAVIDSON  CAN electronic, electronica Composer, singer and poet Marie Davidson is one of the finest artists rising from the electronics dark–synth scene in Montreal. Her voice is a stark half–spoken monotone, which will tell you stories from which you can’t escape unchanged. She refines storytelling with suffocating tales that are both intimate and melancholic. Her miraculously human electronic rhythms are as frantic and hypnotic as an intense stare. Not only will she spin you a tale, but her music will also immerse your soul in images of sweet anxiety. ► Part of project: Female pioneers of electronic music Thursday 18 September, 013 – Foyer

◄ MARISSA NADLER  US folk, singer–songwriter Nadler finds her roots in American gothic soil, from where she writes serene and sinister folk songs. Listening to her music will make you find a place of beauty and class, but underneath the surface crawls a ghostly world of superstitious eeriness and melancholia. In February she released her new album July, which is subtly layered with soothing backing vocals and enchanting arrangements. Live, she accompanies herself with various guitars and a peaceful voice that’s drowned in echo and space. Sunday 21 September, Theaters Tilburg – Schouwburg

MICK BARR  US metal We dare you to follow Mick Barr’s all out dynamic and rapid shredding on stage. This avant–garde metal guitarist and composer is known for his band Krallice (who are also playing Incubate this year) and his solo projects Octis and Ocrilim. He released several albums in which he unleashed a heavy force of his characteristically eccentric solos, and complex pieces on guitar under a programmed drum machine. Thursday 18 September, Paradox

MICK TURNER  AUS ambient / drone Mick Turner is the man who’s touch colours the work of the band Dirty Three – not only as their guitarist, but also by providing some of its album covers with his own paintings. It’s easy to pick Turner’s guitar playing out of a crowd. His distinctive style is dissonant, rough and not easy to get a hold on. His compositions as a solo artist are just as remarkable and transcend the limits of ordinary songwriting with beautiful and mesmerizing guitar tones that sweep through dreamy soundscapes. Friday 19 September, Theaters Tilburg – Schouwburg

MIKROKOLEKTYW  PL free jazz, experimental Mikrokolektyw are known for their high energy, electronics and acoustic jazz. MIND RAYS  BE indie, garage, psychedelic rock The four deranged devotees known as Mind Rays were founded in the swamplands of liberty and levitation, which led to the production of an infectious savagery. 70

MITOCHONDRION  CAN metal, black metal, death metal Their swirling death metal riffs, gutteral vocals and erratic drumming make Mitochondrion highly regarded within extreme metal circles. Their unrelenting and uncompromised sound sets them apart as one of the few death metal bands pushing the boundaries both sonically and musicianship–wise. MOE  NO noise rock Experimental Norwegian noise rock band MoE infuse their minimalistic compositions with a hint of no wave. This is no middle of the road stuff you should take your mum to. ► Part of project: Norwegian Invasion Tuesday 16 September, Cul de Sac

MUSIC M – N

MONNIK  BE psychedelic, drone, experimental Monnik (Dutch for ‘Monk’) is a very apt moniker for this Belgian based experimental one–man band. Monnik wants to explore the boundaries of spiritual isolation, making his musical drones almost ascetic meditations. Layer upon layer of sounds and textures try to evoke an almost shamanistic – if not religious – atmosphere, in order to captivate the audience in an introspective hold. ► Part of project: Consouling Sounds @ Incubate Saturday 20 September, Consouling Store

◄ MOON DUO  US psychedelic rock, krautpop The ‘70s sunlight from San Francisco shines with intoxicating might on Moon Duo, that’s formed by Erik ‘Ripley’ Johnson of the noisy psych outfit Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada. Inspired by Spaceman 3 and Silver Apples, they base their monotonous rhythms and soaring psychedelic guitars on hypnotic looping. These instrumental mantras are a base for Johnson’s vocals and solos that are drowned in a wide scale of effects. Did repetition ever sound this exciting? Monday 15 September, Midi

MOON RELAY  NO psychedelic rock Highly inspired by the vision of the future as projected in many science fiction and detective stories, this psychedelic rock band/ four piece orchestra Moon Relay comes across as raw, alluring and otherworldly. While improvising is an important part of their set, their music seems to arise out of utter focus. Equally effective in the collective ecstasy of concerts as in solitary contemplation, shows that this band has the right formula to make a clear impression. ► Part of project: Norwegian Invasion Monday 15 September, Extase 71

MYSTERY GUEST NL rock After their appearance at Incubate last year they took off and it seems there’s no stopping for these notorious youngsters. ▲ NADJA  CAN ambient / drone Nadja is a project of immense heaviness by the prolific multi–instrumentalist Aidan Baker, who was later joined by bassist/vocalist Leah Buckareff. They have the ability to craft a devastating and slow–moving flood of beautifully textured doom that’s augmented with elements of shoegaze, noise and drone ambient. Their style is therefore often described as ‘dreamsludge’. Since Nadja’s formation in 2003, the band build an extensive discography by releasing several albums, EP’s and splits every year. ► Part of project: Aidan Baker in Residence Monday 15 September, Paradox

NATURAL CHILD  US psychedelic rock, blues rock Natural Child are currently one of the gems of the hip Burger Records. Their hometown Nashville, Tenessee is clearly noticeable in their music: armed with vintage organs and a lap steel Natural Child play an exciting hotchpotch of r&b and genuine country. They stole the show (and probably a lot of brownies) at the SXSW festival. Sunday 21 September, Extase

THE NEON JUDGEMENT  BE industrial, post–punk, ebm The Neon Judgement began their career as an influential EBM band in their home country Belgium, pioneering within the genre alongside with Front 242. Especially in the ‘80s they earned their fame combining mechanical drums, minimal and industrial synthesizers and a melancholic (sometimes even emotional) style of song writing. When playing live, they won’t fail to impress with their charisma, possessive rhythms and aggressive sound that’s also very suitable for dancing. Sunday 21 September, De NWE Vorst

NEXT LIFE  NO noise The poles of violence and fiction are brought together by this alternative metal band from Norway, founded in 1999. As sound and media artists, they atom–smash heavy metal with fast paced, ultra–intense video projection, game and music culture in an impenetrable fusion of sound and image. This strange fluctuating mixture will transform the negative and destructive into something aesthetical and beautiful, and will show you that “fucked up” and “fundamentally different” can be a very good thing. ► Part of project: Norwegian Invasion Wednesday 17 September, Little Devil

ORGUE ELECTRONIQUE  NL electronic, minimal techno, dance Orgue Electronique’s starting point is his own taste. After that, anything goes, as long as it is revolutionary. ◄ PINS  UK indie, post–punk PINS are a combination of energetic post–punk and garage rock. Their songs are extra dynamic because of the amazing polyphonic singing they incorporate. Friday 19 September, Little Devil

PROTOKIDS  FR indie, power pop, punk In the tradition of the best punkbands of the ‘70s/’80s these powerpoppers from Paris crank out some fiendishly infectious pop songs. With the ruff ‘n tuff attitude of early punk (Richard Hell, New York Dolls) and the melody of their more feminine/ poppy offspring (Undertones, Protex, The Outcasts), Protokids create the soundtrack for the nicest gang on earth. Look tough and cry at the same time. ► Part of project: Nightbirds Friday 19 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder

PUCE MARY  DK electronic, electronica The Danish Frederikke Hoffmeier began Puce Mary as a minimal and rhythmic industrial solo project, but she grew as an artist through her live performances and became more and more diverse. Monday 15 September, Little Devil 79

▲ RODRIGO AMARANTE  BRA folk, singer–songwriter You may know this Brazilian singer– songwriter and multi–instrumentalist from his band Los Hermanos or Little Joy. His last album however was a solo–album named Cavalo, and we can assure you that it doesn’t get more sultry than this. RUDE 66  NL electronic, acid techno, dance Bored with corporate techno and empty acid, Rude 66 unfolded his style into industrial electro funk. Rude created a sound out of everything from the early ’80s alternative club music to his own dark acid past within the Dystopian spaces of futurism. Via noise and EBM in the ’80s, he settled on Bunker Records in 1993. With regularly being labelled as ‘the kind of dark electro–wave death race’, Rude will let you think you’re on the red carpet to hell. Dancing. ►Part of project: L.I.E.S. & Bunker label nights Friday 19 September, Hall of Fame

For the Black Wind, Fire & Steel! ► Part of project: Consouling Sounds @ Incubate Wednesday 17 September, Consouling Store

RYLEY WALKER  US indie, singer–songwriter, psych folk After a few years of freaking out in the noise circuit of his home town Chicago, Walker chose to take these experimental aesthetics and melted them down into a charming psychedelic/acid folk sound. It led to the release of his debut album ‘All Kinds Of You’ this year, which is influenced by great American songwriters like Tim Buckley and Bert Jansch and displays his talent for writing gorgeous songs, magical finger picking and composing lush arrangements on strings and piano. Tuesday 16 September, Paradox

SARGEIST  FIN metal, black metal In 2013, Behexen made a very big impression on visitors of Incubate. This year, three members of that cult band are coming back with another Finnish gem from the underground: Sargeist. Having released one of the finest black metal albums of 2014, Sargeist come to Tilburg to cement its solid live reputation. One of the best black metal acts around. ► Part of project: Finland Music Presents Friday 19 September, Extase

SAMOWAR  BE indie, electronic, art–pop Samowar is the electronic project of Leen Diependaele, who uses a looping station to layer and deform her warm and vulnerable voice over electronic beats. This minimal approach results in a set of fragile songs. Her biggest strength is that she clearly follows her own experimental path in this electronic/r&b–landscape by flirting with elements of techno and the avant–garde, making your mind a sweet mess. ► Part of project: Vi.be presents Friday 19 September, Cul de Sac

SCHELLES  NL punk, garage How can nostalgia be a good thing if it’s haunting you? When time changed their teenage angst into cynicism, Dutch garage unit Schelles decided to take it slow. On their self–titled debut album they sing about subjects like walking when your car is out of gas and policing the world Cold Way style, secretly still being wild. SCHMERZLABOR  NL electronic, techno, dance Guy Tavares is the founder of legendary electro label Bunker Records, which he brought to life to release music from his own outfit Unit Moebius. When he plays live as Schmerzlabor, he casts a devastating spell on the audience with his raw techno that varies from extremely danceable ’90s house and rhythmic noise to ’70s acid soul freakouts. ► Part of project: L.I.E.S. & Bunker label nights Friday 19 September, Hall of Fame Saturday 20 September, Hall of Fame

SKITSYSTEM  SE hardcore / punk This Swedish d–beat punk band decided to discharge their pure aggression into pure crust after meeting up with each other for a jam somewhere around 1994. Their music is what a couple of beers can bring to life. Skitsystem is a recommendation for fans of Discharge blended with some characteristics of hardcore punk. So don’t expect inappropriate additions of complex technicality that takes the purity out of punk, but just one fierce attack on society. But please, leave your dog at home! ► Part of project: Doomstar Bookings Presents Saturday 20 September, Extase

SKULLFLOWER  UK avant–garde, noise No compromise–band Skullflower and the genre noise go hand in hand to clothesline everything in their way. Build around core– member Matthew Bower, the band always stuck to their formula: harsh noise and droning soundscapes, adding psychedelic and blackened elements along the way. Their walls of buzzing guitar–feedback, repetitive drum patterns and distorted vocals make a Skullflower show a physical and hypnotizing experience, leaving you behind in a state of pure ecstasy. Saturday 20 September, Dudok SHUN CLUB  BE indie, rock The Belgian band Shun Club is built around songwriter Johan Verckist, who gathered multiple songs during the previous years and recorded them with artists from all over the country. The result is a collection of songs that excel in clever arrangements and catchiness and are so well–timed that their overall cheerful moods can suddenly show cracks and make room for sweet melancholy to seep out. ► Part of project: Vi.be presents Friday 19 September, Cul de Sac 82

SNØFFELTØFFS  DE garage, lo–fi, indie Are you a fan of that characteristic lo–fi rock sound? Then prepare yourself for one of the lowest of fi’s. Berlin–based Snøffeltøffs’ jangly, raw and up–tempo garage punk turns sounding sloppy into a form of art, and their lyrics are poetic in their teenage simplicity. Don’t get fooled by those two prohibition signs in their name, because Snøffeltøffs defy the rules of conventional garage rock with high energy. Tuesday 16 September, Cul de Sac

MUSIC S

SOL INVICTUS  UK folk, neofolk Tony Wakeford, who is the founder and sole constant member of Sol Invictus, is a master in writing songs that combine apocalyptic folk noir with neoclassical arrangements. The mournful lyricism that appears in his songs has an imaginative effect, portraying landscapes of decay and the loss of everything beautiful. The melodic compositions in his music alongside with his profound songwriting make everything by Sol Invictus a memorable listen. Sunday 21 September, De NWE Vorst

SPINDRIFT  US psychedelic If you’d ask us, we’d say Spindrift are on the official soundtrack of at least one Zorro movie. Imagine, Antonio Banderas chasing a bandit or, even better, in a battle with Catherine Zeta–Jones with their ace track ‘The Matador And The Fuzz’ playing in the background. Further, Spindrift make rather fine psychedelic rock for over 2 decades now. Oh, did we mention they were on the OST of Quentin Tarantino’s Hell Ride? Saturday 20 September, Midi

SOVIET SOVIET  IT indie, post–punk The Italian post–punk trio Soviet Soviet make clear connections with bands of the past, such as Joy Division. You hear driving drumbeats that are carefully layered under a warm, nearly synth like bass and hypnotizing droning guitars. In combination with vocals that are echoing and nearly shrill in nature, they create an effect that reminds us of Bauhaus. Their songs are gloomy, but also contain a massive amount of energy. Sunday 21 September, De NWE Vorst

STAER  NO noise rock Beware of the three–headed beast called Staer! They’re back in The Netherlands and ready to crush Incubate again with their heavy instrumental sounds. If you missed them last year in the Little Devil, this is your chance to redeem yourself. If you like hard–hitting bands like Noxagt or Ultralyd, you’ll love this! ► Part of project: Norwegian Invasion Friday 19 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder

◄ THE SPACE LADY  US indie, minimal synth Over the last 30 years, The Space Lady (Susan Dietrich) built a reputation performing on the streets – the only place where you might find her, alongside the subways and storefronts. Shrouded in a veil of obscurity and clothed with a steel helmet with angel wings, she became a cult figure. Recently she recorded a collection of songs in the studio, characterized by the same lo–fi synthesizer sound and haunting vocal performance that earlier on delivered a remarkable cover of Major Tom. ► Part of projects: Noisey Recommends, Female pioneers of electronic music, Gonzo(Circus) Recommends Thursday 18 September, 013 – Foyer

STARA RZEKA  PL psychedelic, drone, folk Stara Rzeka (Kuba Zio_ek) uses guitars, pedals and synths to channel various styles like drone ambient, folk and slowly crawling black metal through dark and moody atmospheres. It’s like a haunting wind, blowing through the Polish countryside, this transcendental folk that evokes nostalgia and a sense of the sanctity of nature. But it also chills your spine like a haunting presence in pitch black darkness. Visitors and co–workers of Incubate placed his 2013 album in our top 50 of the year. ► Part of project: Polska na Incubate Sunday 21 September, Paradox

▼ STELLAR OM SOURCE  FR electronic, electronica The moment Christelle Gualdi sculpted her synthpop into a sound with more percussive elements, she began attracting a lot of attention as Stellar Om Source. Many called her 2013 album ‘Joy One Mile’ the best of 2013 in the electronic music scene. Quite remarkable when you know Gualdi was a double bassist in the Konigin Katharina Stift Schulorchester and a student of music theory at Université Paris VIII. And she studied architecture, which we like to think of as a background helping her structure her intricate songs. ► Part of project: Female pioneers of electronic music Thursday 18 September, 013 – Foyer

STEVE SUMMERS  US electronic, house, techno, dance Rarely records and performs under his real name. The man of thousand faces and of thousand projects is most commonly known for his work as Steve Summers, Rhythm Based Lovers, Innergaze, Malvoeaux, Alan Hurst, 2 Dogs in a House (together with Ron Morelli), and more. With releases on Clones Jack for Daze, Future Times, the label of the Beautiful Swimmers and his own acclaimed Touch Your Life, Echovolt and L.I.E.S., a constant stream of outstanding music has been released over the past several years. ► Part of project: L.I.E.S. & Bunker label nights Friday 19 September, Dudok

SUN GLITTERS  LUX electronic That feeling that you experience when you’re riding your bike on a beautiful summer day with the wind in your hair. You get that warm, happy sensation from it. The music of Luxembourgish musician Victor Ferreira is very relaxing. He uses lush melodies, pitch–shifted vocal samples, warm bass pulses and ambient scoundscapes to make beautiful, sparkling music. From the bands name to the washed out pastels in their artwork: it all screams nostalgia. Friday 19 September, De NWE Vorst

SVALBARD  UK post–rock, hardcore / punk British band Svalbard is nothing like the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard and they share nothing but a name. Where the latter’s cold, the band delivers warmth in the pit with their post–rock’ish hardcore. Lyrical influence from early 20th century existentialism, Svalbard alternate between moments of aggression and moments of frailty with an all–encompassing sense of desperate hope. ► Part of project: Holy Roar Records Presents Friday 19 September, V39

SVART CROWN  FR metal, death metal, black metal Driven by black metal and orthodox ideas, French band Svart Crown know how to use these ingredients to create hard–hitting songs filled with demonic energy. This generates itself into a vertiginous whirl of seemingly incoherent and dizzying notes and cords. With the release of latest album ‘Profane’, the band wrote some sort of testimony of a world going to hell. Wednesday 17 September, Extase

▼ SVENGALISGHOST  US electronic, techno, house, dance The performer SvengalisGhost is a child of light and magic. He uses hypnotic rhythms and a fork tongue to seduce through coercion. Highly stimulated by the unknown sonic textures that caressed his ears at dance parties and seeing Ron Morelli and other Chicago Djs whenever he could, he realized the social responsibility of the DJ as a shamanic Force that elevates the dancer to a higher frequency of consciousness. ► Part of project: L.I.E.S. & Bunker label nights Friday 19 September, Dudok

TALVIHORROS  UK ambient, electronic, Dark ambient Composer Ben Chatwin works primarily with guitar and analogue electronics to explore various sound scaping possibilities. Sunday 21 September, De Boemel

TEEN CREEPS  BE indie, rock J Mascis & co teached Teen Creeps well, we think. Their crunching indie–rock has a sound you could easily relate to J Mascis’ Dinosaur Jr. or Superchunk, though it includes way more intense vocals. The 5–tracks self titled EP Teen Creeps released in the first week of 2014 gave us 5 more reasons to invite the band for the 2014 edition of our festival. Only one of these should be enough for you to check out these creeps at Incubate. ► Part of project: Vi.be presents Tuesday 16 September, Cul de Sac

TEETHING  ES hardcore, punk Inspired by Napalm Death, Converge and Discharge these four guys play some of the meanest, fastest and ugliest crust grind we could find. This means ultrashort, ultraviolent and ultrafast songs. Come get your crust on. ► Part of project: Doomstar Bookings Presents Saturday 20 September, Extase

TELEPATHY  UK ambient, metal, post–metal Wordless music filled with both heavy passages of darkness and brief hints of light, Telepathy delivers post–metal like it should be: intriguing, evocative and balanced. The well structured compositions take the audience on auditive journeys through time and space. Alternating sludge riffs with ambient soundscaping, Telepathy know how to keep their listeners captivated. Saturday 20 September, Little Devil

◄ THEE SILVER MT. ZION MEMORIAL ORCHESTRA  CAN post–rock, neoclassical Canada’s a great country with great music, and the city of Montreal is the top supplier. What we especially love, is the whole scene surrounding Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (since 1999) consists of three members from that epic band. 2014–album ‘Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything’ is the first definitive document of the band’s new–found sound and style as a quintet. Call it post–rock or neo–classical; we think it’s beautiful and perfect music for a very special theatre show at Incubate. Sunday 21 September, Theaters Tilburg – Schouwburg

► THIS WILL DESTROY YOU  US doom, shoegaze, post–rock While many would use the term post–rock to describe This Will Destroy You, they themselves prefer the term ‘doomgaze’. And they’re right: blending slow doomy passages with explosive shoegaze eruptions, this is more than the clean post–rock of others. Let yourself get carried away in this musical mayhem. Let them destroy you, only to build yourself up again. Stronger than ever. Friday 19 September, Dudok

THROW ME IN THE CRATER  NL metal, sludge While throw me in the crater could also be about sacrificing yourself for the sake of others, these five guys will have none of that. Their nihilistic take on life is utterly depressing and negative. There is nothing to live for. Give up trying. It’s not worth it. Nothing is. Wednesday 17 September, Extase

TONS  IT metal, sludge TONS arose from the ashes of Turin’s best–known hardcore bands. Moving on to sludge and stoner rock, this trio released the first gut wrenching record in 2012 on which they are at war with the Lovecraftian cosmic entity Yog–Sothoth. Locked outside of the universe, this entity unveils the psychedelics infused direction of the band. Friday 19 September, Paradox

TORN HAWK  US electronic, experimental, dance First gained notice for his visual work for the likes of Autre Ne Veut, Mi Ami, and Steve Summers. Though he had been making equally arresting sound works for some time, ‘Tarifa’, his debut on LIES as Torn Hawk, brought his music to a wider audience. The Torn Hawk live attack features an artisinal tilework of distressed denim beats, behind a foreground of gestural guitar emitting everything from Sawzall–shorn sheetmetal riffs to Gottsching–meets– Verlaine watercolor dapplings and washes. ► Part of project: Gonzo(Circus) Recommends, L.I.E.S. & Bunker label nights Friday 19 September, Dudok 87

TRAAMS  UK indie, post–punk, krautrock Originated purely out of the mission to stand up against the dullness of West Sussex , the trio known as Traams decided to go on a quest of creating some groovy krautrock. This led to their energetic post–punk sound which is driven by distorted vocals and guitars with a touch of friendly pop melodies. With the gained stage experience alongside bands like Parquet Courts, Dope Body and FIDLAR, Traams have truly evolved into an edgy live band. Sunday 21 September, Extase

TRAVEL CHECK  FR garage, psychedelic What makes a great garage band? The fuzz? The well–rehearsed sloppiness? Denim jackets? Fuck no: the songs do. All songs need to be stone–cold killer party–starters. Travel Check probably told themselves: ‘Will this song get people moving? No? Toss it.’ These guys from Paris take the garage sound (made popular by bands like the Black Lips ) and infuse it with psychedelics and some good ‘ol French ‘Joie De Vivre’! ► Part of project: Nightbirds Friday 19 September,City Hotel – De Stadskelder

TREMORO TARANTURA  NO noise rock Ranging from orchestral extravaganzas to short death escapades, Tremoro Tarantura explores its own limits between the ugly and the beautiful, constantly verging on the edge of disaster. They shake hands with imperfection, but somehow manage to keep a strong melody which guides the listener through the eclectic romanticism, and into the light. Tremoro Tarantura is loud, distorted and repetitive and are set to spread earth–shaking dissonance at Incubate. ► Part of project: Norwegian Invasion Friday 19 September, Dudok

TREPANERINGSRITUALEN  SE Industrial Exploring themes of religion, magick and the occult realms of consciousness while taking its musical cues from the old school of ritual ambient and death industrial. Rhythmic and seething at times, and oozing forward with a creeping sense of desolation, Trepaneringsritualen conjures forth bleak but mesmerizing visions of the end–times. Sunday 21 September, Little Devil

TRUE BLACK DAWN  FIN metal, black metal Black metal is controversial in nature. Since its inception the purpose of the genre was to attack the status quo with sonic warfare and to use shock value to give a voice to unorthodox ideas. If we were giving grades for shock value, True Black Dawn would get an a+. Blood, satanism and controversy, this is raw black metal in its bleakest form. ► Part of project: Finland Music Presents Friday 19 September, Extase

THE TUBS  BE garage The Tubs combine the simplicity and immediacy of punk with unique perspectives on arrangement, vocals, and song writing. The garage rock trio released their debut ‘Birds Don’t Sink’ last September and became part of the cassette label Gnar Tapes, next to White Fang and R. Stevie Moore. Their trashy lo–fi garage sound is supported by catchy underlying melodies. ► Part of project: Vi.be presents Monday 15 September, Cul de Sac 89

TUSMØRKE  NO experimental Identical twins Tusmørke turn time into an illusion when they play. Transmitted from the heart of the darkest northern forests, these Norwegian magicians channel the spirit of classic British folk and soak it in a black witch’s kettle. After recording their demo in 1997, this Norwegian duo returned in 2009 with a full electric line–up to dissolve everything that the modern world made us believe in. ► Part of project: Norwegian Invasion Saturday 20 September, Paradox

◄ TUXEDOMOON  US new wave, indie, experimental New wave group Tuxedomoon, founded in 1977, has been experimenting with the avant–garde ever since, constantly evolving within their own creative space. They can be as menacing as they are seductive, and always implement their music with a hint of surrealism. Their flirtations with jazz, art rock and minimal synthesizers give them the ability to turn every venue they play into a hybrid of a smoky nightclub and an abandoned factory. Friday 19 September, Theaters Tilburg

TWEENS  US garage, rock ‘n roll Girl vocals with mean snarls; bass licks plucked straight outta 50’s rock ‘n roll; trashy drums made for bubblegum party’s. Tweens are our garage pop wet dream! We’re sure that Tweens’ Bridget Battle would have fronted a bad–ass, all–girl doo–wop group if she would have been born in the 60’s. Now she just cranks her flanger pedal and sings songs about teen–angst combined with musings on love and being young. More glitter, more pop and more rattlin– and–a–rollin please! ► Part of project: Nightbirds Friday 19 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder

TYSMFYH  BE noise, experimental The project TYSMFYH (Jean D.L. & Sandrine Verstraete) assembles not only the large musical background of both artists, crossing genres from metal over field recordings to spoken word and noise, but also their love for cinematographic atmospheres. These influences are incorporated by both musicians who create in this project their own morose universe, with lots of tension which leaves little space for the audience to breathe. In a good way of course. ► Part of project: Consouling Sounds @ Incubate Monday 15 September, Consouling Store

UNAUSSPRECHLICHEN KULTEN  CL metal, death metal When a band name signifies both death metal juggernauts Nile and the Ctulhu mythos, you know you’re in for something wrong, forbidden and hideous. Unaussprechlichen Kulten (Nameless Cults) are exactly what you’d feared it would be: pitch black death metal filled with muddy riffs, unrelenting drums and a haunting voice that summons up the things that should not be. Thursday 18 September, Little Devil

THE UNBORN  NL hardcore/punk This Dutch hardcore punk band lives by the resounding slogan “You can easily fit 13 songs in ten minutes”. So it’s not unexpected that their music is fast, dirty and loud. The band has been together for 14 years, and released two unofficial albums, a digital single and a tape. The latest achievement, ‘Massavalpartij’ came via Black Death Records on an old fashioned, genuine 7 vinyl. ► Part of project: Black Death Records Presents Sunday 21 September, V39

UNIT MOEBIUS  NL electronic, industrial, acid techno, dance Unit Moebius was a group from the Hague that started experimenting with earlier forms of house. With a background in punk music they started looking in a different and refreshing way to the genre, what resulted in various releases on Bunker Records and the current legendary ‘acid planet’ parties in the Hague. In 2007 UM was reborn as Unit Moebius Anonymous, the solo project of main UM member Jan Duivenvoorden. His electronic music is still freaky, machine– like, raw and resembles elements of the ‘90s hardcore movement. ► Part of project: L.I.E.S. & Bunker label nights Friday 19 September, Hall of Fame

UNKIND  FIN metal, hardcore/punk As if Mogwai made a record of Tragedy covers, is how Relapse Records described Unkind’s record ‘Penol Juuret’. We hear this band’s earnest love for destruction and revolution translated to melodious crust. They have a beautiful way of interpreting violence. This said, be sure that Unkind will make up for the fact that squats in The Netherlands aren’t anything like the enlivening ones in grim Finland. ► Part of project: Doomstar Bookings Presents Saturday 20 September, Extase

UNTOLD (A/V SHOW)  UK dance, techno UK producer Untold (Jack Dunning) strips his music from all sorts of conventional structure and melody. What’s left is a monolithic sound that’s based on a wide variety of dark textures and deep sub basses, as can be heard on his EPs debut album Black Light Spiral that’s released this year. It’s a redefinition of the concept ‘techno’, or even ‘music’. He takes this album on tour with a special audio/visual show. Friday 19 September,  De NWE Vorst

UP RIVER  UK hardcore punk This four piece from Brighton wrote the soundtrack to their own hardships and frustrations. Disheartened and desperate, Up River excavated the most honest melodies out of their groundwork of hardcore punk. Writing their angst ridden songs since forming in early 2011, the band have been growing intensely while being dragged down with emotion. This time there’s no place for apathy. It’s time to run amok and be part of Up River’s outbreak. ► Part of project: Holy Roar Records Presents Friday 19 September, V39

VIRGINIA  DE techno, electronic, electronica This multi–talent from Munich is probably known best for her DJ sets, but she’s also in possesion of a strong voice, song–wring qualities and know–how when it comes to producing. Her techno is lush, downtempo and addictive. Now you can hear for yourself why she had a series of longstanding nights at Sven Väth’s Cocoon club in Frankfurt, which ran for over 3 years. Inspired by the warm and analog tracks of the ’80s and ’90s, her DJ sets combine this sound with modern records in an exciting fusion, layered with spontaneous live vocals. ► Part of project: Female pioneers of electronic music Thursday 18 September, 013 – Kleine Zaal

VOISKI  US electronic, techno, dance Forward thinking electronic artist, sharing his music with the world through various sessions, labels and collaborations. WAIVER  NL avant–garde, noise, krautrock, space rock Somewhere in the future, there lies a promise of a zombie apocalypse. Until then we can at least listen to Waiver, an experimental noise rock band from Amsterdam, sending out their waves into space. While they’re singing about a vibrator escalator and natte meisjes (‘wet girls’), they’ll give us a chance with those same space waves and their moonstruck show to prepare for the post–apocalyptic future in which civilization turns into the absurd. Saturday 20 September, Cul de Sac

WATENGWA  TA hip hop Watengwa is a hiphop group of musicians based in the slums of East Africa. Their lyrics are rooted in real life experiences, with particular attention to the world–view of Africans and the global flows that inform their lives. While their music is deeply embedded in African perspectives and realities, they have been influenced by Western hip–hop legends. ► Part of project: Global Activism Tuesday 16 September, Cul de Sac Wednesday 17 September, Cul de Sac

WEVAL  NL electronic Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte met while working in the film industry, and the music they make has this same cinematic touch. Weval (derived from the Dutch word for ‘waterfall’) sounds like a sedating stream of electronic pulses in which you could also find the occasional jazz, house and trip/hip hop reference points. ► Part of project: Percolated Thursday 18 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder 92

WOODEN WAND  US folk, alt–country, singer–songwriter, psychedelic Singer–songwriter James Jackson Toth offers an accessible balance between unconventional free/freak–folk and the traditional folk music from the ‘60s and ‘70s (think Dylan, or Young), a mix that’s known as New Weird America. His new album Farmer’s Corner has excellent wordplay and touches these classic country roots as well. Like a desert wind that blows gently over an old American landscape, the hints of calm and sadness in music bring forth a feeling of inner serenity. Saturday 20 September, Pauluskerk

▲ WOODS  US folk, psychedelic This Brooklyn–based band’s music is joyful, with bright guitars and pretty vocal harmonies, but also slightly odd. It’s easy to picture yourself sitting in front of a tent in the middle of a forest with Woods playing their folk songs while their image slightly blurs in the vibrations of a big campfire. But while everything seems fine and happy, there is this feeling of mystery and sadness coming from the trees. Their eighth album in nine years was released this April. Sunday 21 September, Dudok

WOODSMAN  US psychedelic rock Woodsman is a Brooklyn/Colorado–based trio of autodidacts that play manipulated psychedelic rock. Saturday 20 September, City Hotel – De Stadskelder

YADAYN  BE indie, drone, classical, folk yadayn (Arabic for ‘two hands’) is a solo project by Zura Zaj guitarist Gowaart. ► WOVENHAND  US folk, americana, alt–country Wovenhand is the vehicle of ex–16 Horsepower lead singer David Eugene Edwards, who gained a broad following as a gothic country/folk songwriter. His artfully crafted songs are known for being intense and spiritually–lit, with lyrics that are able to purify the blackest of souls. The new album Refractory Obdurate was released in partnership with the hardcore punk label Deathwish. This heavier approach to his musical explorations can only mean a new stage in Wovenhands existence. Saturday 20 September, Midi

THE WYTCHES  UK psychedelic rock, surf The Wytches call their music ‘evil–surf doom’ and we can find no better way to describe it. The melancholy–tinged guitar music of the British three–piece, both lyrically and musically, is sometimes hectic and fierce, and other times heavy and psychedelic. They haven’t released much music yet, but just this summer they released their fabulous debut album with the title ‘Annabel Dream Reader’. Sunday 21 September, Dudok

YAWNS  BE indie, psychedelic pop These Belgians chose such a misleading name for their band, because their groovy neo–psychedelic rock is nothing to yawn at. Their music fits perfectly within an exciting wave of ‘60s psych–revival bands, like MGMT and Tame Impala. With a guitar sound that’s jangly and fuzzy, reverb–drenched vocals and addictive rhythms, they showcase the perfect recipe for a brain–baking hallucinatory experience. ► Part of project: Vi.be presents Monday 15 September, Cul de Sac
