preface

preface Brabant seems to be an excellent breeding ground for talent that, throughout history, has had enormous significance for Europe. An unbroken line runs from the magnificent absurdity of Hieronymus Bosch to the sublime madness of Vincent van Gogh, to the inventors of the NatLab who gave the world sound, light and image, to the fairy-tale tellers of the Efteling and to the colourful West African palette of Vlisco designers. And now: an explosion of ‘useful idiots’ who freely give society their special taste, music, furniture, buildings, arts and, above all, ideas. To name a few: fashion designers Viktor & Rolf; DJ Tiësto; lingerie goddess Marlies Dekkers; architects Winy Maas and Jon Körmeling; designers Marcel Wanders and studio Job; film-maker Jan de Bont; art director Erik Kessels; shoe developer Floris van Bommel; classical musicians Storioni Trio; artists such as Tom Claassen, Marc Mulders and Joep van Lieshout. And recently, the remarkable crew of Incubate: developing this independent festival truly ‘Open Source’ and inviting other festivals to take over parts of the programme, introducing a new concept called ‘Social Festival Model’. This rich harvest of people comes from a traditionally impoverished province, where people struggled for survival on barren sand. Where people learned to make good use of the little that the land provided - resulting today in extensive manufacturing, top research and technology. Where people shared what little they had with the family. And, whenever possible, celebrated life together. And so it became, too, the region of mass carnival, brass bands, flower pageants, circus, choirs, attraction parks and the largest funfair in Europe. It is exactly here that Breda, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Eindhoven, Helmond and Tilburg together want to become the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018. To celebrate life together with our European family, inviting special people like you to pool your extraordinary talents with ours. Peter Rijntjes, Trailblazer for BrabantStad European Capital of Culture 2018

embassy of piracy

embassy of piracy Time is epic, the ecosystem of the Internet is tested and we are here to defend it. Old regimes are passing new laws and new regulations to uphold a failing system that nobody really wants. The internet today is not some virtual entity, but a network that can materialize in everything from court systems, parliaments and phone networks to memes, music and art systems. Internet is a methodology, not a place. The idea of an Embassy of Piracy came up when Piratbyr책n and The Pirate Bay got invited to contribute to first Internet Pavilion that was part of this years Venice Biennial. As an Embassy our task is to represent the freedom of Internet and pirates of Internet and to promote the Kopimi way of life.

The Embassy has multipliable and modifiable form in shape of a pyramid. By downloading and printing out the foldable paper model you can make the Embassy materialize anywhere; in public spaces, in the forest, at work, school or on your dinner table or for your pets. Remember, when you form an Embassy, you are legally within internet territory. Together we will multiply a growing number of Embassies all over the world. Share your photos of The Embassy on the http://embassyofpiracy.org We are all the Embassy, we are all Ambassadors of the freedom of Internet. This adventure is ours to swarm, modify and share.

music program week

music program week Anaal Nathrakh (uk) Birmingham has a great rep when it comes to bands that like to push the barriers of sound and good taste. The town already treated the metal-minded to Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Napalm Death. Anaal Nathrakh spawned from the loins of these bands and will finish the work of their ancestors: to bring total Armageddon. It’s the audial essence of evil, hatred and violence. Anaal Nathrakh’s status as one of the leading lights in extreme metal is undeniable.

Bonaparte (DE) Bonaparte is one of a kind. Calling it weird would not even start to cover this freak show. But when you add words like interesting, spectacle, happy and circus Bonaparte gets a little more tangible. Make sure you don’t have to work on Wednesday morning. Because you’ll still struggle to shut your amazed eyes, have stomach aches from laughing, and will not be able to get their catchy tunes out of your head. tuesday September 15th, 23:30 - 00:30

bonaparte

Drums Are For Parades (BE) Usually loud, violent and aggressive, this power-trio touches on many styles, most prominently including heavy metal, hardcore punk and noise rock, spiked with a subtle sexual groove. Live appearances are supersonic exercises in conquest by volume and sheer heaviness. tuesday September 15th, 20:30 - 21:15 Sludge, Hardcore / v39

Future Of The Left (UK) Mclusky was bigger than your band. Future Of The Left is bigger than life. Future of the Left consists of singer/guitarist Andy “Falco Falkous and drummer Jack Egglestone, both previously of Cardiff band Mclusky. Future Of The Left follows the concrete path of noise, punk and indierock. Cool as fuck. Loud as fuck. tuesday September 15th, 22:00 - 23:00 Punkrock, Indierock / v39

30

music program week

jonquil

Jonquil (UK) Influenced by the likes of Joan Baez, The Microphones, Akron/Family, Swans and Stars of the Lid, Hugo Manuel of Jonquil spent a year collecting melodicas, reed organs, glockenspiels, dulcimers and whistles. With his band mates, he creates beautiful and engrossing dark gentle songs, dense summer drones, fairground field recordings and creeped-out dusty attic music. monday September 14th, 23:30 - 00:30 Folk, Indierock, Indie / cul de sac

Mentol Nomad (US) Mentol Nomad has been plying his trade on the New York underground for the better part of the ‘90s. Since 1999, he has been a foot soldier in the war against mediocre music, keeping the underground fed from the 1 and 2’s. Now, many moons and tainted twists of fate later, the Nomad finally rises to the task of his Incubate-debut. monday September 14th, 20: 45 - 21:30 Hip hop, Avantgarde, Dub / v39

music program week

Moustafa Moustache (FR) Remember any of the six performances of the stir crazy Monotonix at ZXZW 2007? Than get ready for Moustafa Moustache at Incubate 2009. Three overactive ADHD types make crows dance harder than the average human being can handle. Throwing electronics, jungle, noise and rock in the mix, Moustafa Moustache will do anything to shake things up and destroy serenity. As George Costanza would put it: “You wanna get nuts?! Let’s get nuts!” thursday September 17th, 23:30 - 00:30

31

PINTANDWEFALL (FIN) Garage grrrlpower like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, only more retarded. In a good way, like Modest Mouse retarded. Pintandwefall brings punky party music made by four girls from Helsinki. Happy music, light lyrics, and a beat that reminds of The White Stripes will definitely get a party started during Incubate 2009. Zombies, and octopuses are occupying their lyrics as well as issues closer to home, like what to wear. These girls follow their own path and that path does not follow the rules. Bad girls. wednesday September 16th, 23:30 - 00:30 Indie, Garage, Punk / cul de sac

Dance, Punk / Cul de Sac PINTANDWEFALL

Noiz Boiz (NL) Noiz Boiz is pure Dutch grime with heavy dubstep oriented beats, fusing hiphop with garage and 2 step. Noiz Boiz is 3 guys, 2 mc’s and a producer bringing lyrical reflection about daily life in Rotterdam. thursday September 17th, 21:00 - 21:45 Dubstep, Grime / V39

32

music program week

Sensational (US) Once in an eternity an artist will come along who defies any explanation, breaks all boundaries, and destroys all preconceived notions as to what music is. In hip hop, no one even comes close to the man they call Sensational. The tripped-out flows, the broken beats, the lo-fi ambience all went largely unnoticed by the Puffy-worshipping masses. Without the help of a sequencer, using only a 4 or 8-track, a drum machine and a turntable, Sensational creates a true and original blend of hip hop, banishing the competition to the land of mediocrity. monday September 14th, 22:45 - 23:30

Suckafish P (AU) Suckafish P Jones (aka Mr Cloak and Dagger) makes music that makes you stagger. Producer and voice of the music, Suckafish drops border-crossing heavystep riddims around anthems of lashingly ironically abstract lyricism. Haunting and confounding melodies spit fire around slippery beats that resemble and destroy grime, hip hop and club music. It’s a celebration of bass, rhythm and tropical electronics. It burns when you touch it. thursday September 17th, 22:00 - 23:00 Grime, Hip hop, Dubstep / v39

Hip hop, Avantgarde / v39

Tiké (NL) Spectre, the Ill Saint (US) Spectre, The Ill Saint, is none other than Skiz Fernando, a singular figure in the media/arts community, DJ, Producer and owner of WordSound Recordings. His D.I.Y. approach and unique melting pot of Dub, Hip-Hop and Drum ‘n Bass is known worldwide for innovation, experimentation and creativity and let him to work with Prince Paul, Last Poets, X-ecutioners and the Jungle Brothers, to name a few. monday September 14th, 21:45 - 22:30 Hip hop, Dub, Avantgarde / v39

Born in Willemstad, Curaçao, Tiké grew up with Reggae, Bachate, Salsa, Gospel, Country and Soul. At the age of ten he heard a Tupac record which made him fall for hip hop. He truly is a rapping poet. monday September 14th, 20:00 - 20:30 Hip hop / v39

music program friday Altar of Plagues (IRE) Altar of Plagues shift between unrelenting two chord black metal buzzsaw riffs, colossal melodies, lengthy atmospheric parts that build up tension and murky electronic soundscapes. Imagine a combination of Secrets of the Moon, Neurosis and Primordial. In 2008 they signed to Profound Lore Records and supported black metal legends Mayhem on their European tour. Terrorizer magazine about their debut: “one of the most promising debuts since Wolves in the Throne Room’s ‘Diadem of 12 stars’”.

Antoni Maiovvi (IT) We think he was there, sitting by the side of the pool, when Sabrina tried to get her ‘Boys Boys Boys’ in her small bikini top. It isn’t strange if Antoni Maiovvi had synthesizer lessons from Giorgo Moroder. And it wouldn’t surprise us if he roamed the disco’s with Falco. But it could just as well be that Anton Maiof (that’s his real name) paid attention to the charts when he was young. friday September 18th, 00:00 - 00:45 Disco, Italo dance / cul de sac

Big City Orchestra (US)

Birds of a Feather (NL)

This is not your standard Orchestra. The San Francisco Bay Area based band has released an enormous catalogue of recorded material over the past two decades. Formed in the late 1970’s the ensemble continues to maintain a free-flowing roster of artists from around the world that collaborate on specific projects. Categorizing the Orchestra into any given genre can be a task, as releases continue to surprise even the most devout listener. There is never any way to precisely classify the work of BCO.

Watch out for 80-ies style, youth crew sing-along hardcore, bringing an ever urgent message for a positive lifestyle and a better society. To show that straight edge is not “a passing phase. To show that hardcore is not a passing phase. To prove that our ideals still matter, and still need work. friday September 18th, 22:30 -23:00 hardcore / Little Devil

Brat Pack (NL) Hailing from the eastern part of The Netherlands comes Brat Pack: a punk rock band that you would expect from the western and sunny side of California. With ex- and current members of Beans, Antillectual, My Reply and Citizens Patrol they have a lot of experience in playing pure and uncut punk. Influenced by RKL, early NOFX, Adolescents and DI, they teamed up early 2006, for pure Westcoast hardcore punk worship. Think lots of speed and melody. friday September 18th, 00:00 - 00:45 punk / Little Devil

Celan (US) Celan is the brainchild of Ari Benjamin Meyers (Einstürzende Neubauten, Redux Orchestra) and Chris Spencer (Unsane). They met in Berlin during an Unsane tour and immediately got interest in creating a project to combine and melt their completely different backgrounds (classical, avantgarde, industrial, noise and hardcore). Dananananaykroyd (UK) “Their live shows have an utterly brutal magnificence” - Drowned in Sound. Once there was a little band from Glasgow that liked actor Dan Aykroyd. After a night of drinking they couldn’t pronounce it, and a great band name was born. That would be a nice story, but it’s not really true... The band describes their sound as ‘fight pop’, but it’s much more than that. They toured with Kaiser Chiefs, and if you like your onstage performance to come with a shitload of ADHD then watch this, watch this! friday September 18th, 21:15 - 22:15 Screamo, powerpop, post-punk, fightpop / 013 Kleine Zaal

Get The Most (CAN) Hardcore outfit that started as a fun tribute to legendary bands like Youth of Today, Insted, Uniform Choice, Unity and Unit Pride. In their own words Get The Most wants to “get wild” during live shows. Instruments (Make Music) (UK) Instruments (Make Music) make precise yet unconstrained math pop. It’s bouncy and fun, but hiding in the closet there’s a slice of drama which can’t help but rear its little head from the midst of chirpy melodies. These sounds are awash with jerky timings and impromptu closes, but this never compromises Instruments’ longing for the melodramatic pop song. It’s music to walk your dog, ride your bike or fly your kite to with a skip in your step, a beat in your chest and a smile on your face. friday September 18th, 22:45 - 23:30 math, pop / cul de sac

Manatees (UK) Darkness. Thick layers of filthy blackness. Escape is not an option. Covered by the slime that is actually dripping from the sound. It’s filling the room that seems to get smaller and smaller. The speakers cry by the sheer volume. Hypnotizing rhythms providing the groundwork for the dissonant screeching guitars and the vocals that come from deep within. Those places would be better left covered. Nothing left to do but to stand, watch and be carried away by the waves of these Manatees. friday September 18th, 21:15 - 22:00 Doom, Sludge, Post-metal, Drones, Metal / little devil

Kid Pang (UK) Kid Pang are like a hybrid paella from the sunny south east. ON (US) ON is a hardcore band from Seattle, featuring members of Champion, Go It Alone and other well-known hardcore punk outfits. With their positive attitude these guys have something to say about Western society these days but without blaming everyone except themselves. They have very relevant, really self-conscious lyrics. Pulled Apart By Pneu (FR) Vocals are overrated. And so are bass guitars. The two members of Pneu just bash the hell out of a drum kit and a guitar, in a way that makes The Death Letters look lake average Joes. Think Don Caballero, Victims Family, Jucifer and croissants. Their live energy is crude but controlled. Their shows never fail to unbore. Pneu preferably plays surrounded by their own audience, enabling both parties to engage in a maximum level of interaction. friday September 18th, 22:30 - 23:00 Noise Rock / Kafee ‘t Buitenbeentje

Horses (UK) AUWCH! It must be the most horrible torture method around: horses that tear limbs off. But Pulled Apart By Horses from Leeds isn’t a torture at all. Just don’t expect the most sweet singer-songwriter songs from this quartet. A mix of hardcore, crackling indie, punk will suffer your eardrums and make you dance the whole night long. But that’s a torture you will like to undergo for sure. Ps. You might be forced to buy their EP as well. friday September 18th, 22:15 - 23:00 Post Punk, Indierock / 013 batcave

The Damned (UK) Never Mind the Sex Pistols, here’s The Damned! The Damned are the true pioneers of punk. The single ‘New Rose’ was released a month before ‘Anarchy in the UK’ of The Sex Pistols and ‘Damned Damned Damned’ was the first punk full length. Despite being one of the definitive early Punk bands they were also one of the most ambitious; with their later albums moving away from the garage sound, they were taking in elements from Gothic and Psychedelica to Progrock and Metal. friday September 18th, 22:45 - 23:45

The Notorious Hi-Fi Killers (UK) Hi-fi is dead. Well, at least that’s what the name of this UK band suggests. And indeed, The Notorious Hi-Fi Killers embrace the lo-fi aesthetic with not just enthusiasm, but with downright aggression. With their amps turned up to 11 and the distortion pedals on maximum overdrive, the band jumps and crunches through a number of Punk influenced songs. This basic, down n’ dirty rock n’ roll. friday September 18th, 23:30 - 00:00

Tune-Yards (US) Tune-Yards from the United States make mini-epics that bring to mind an early, crude version of Juana Molina’s onewoman-band aesthetic; others sound like they’re being whispered around a latenight campfire burning a few tents over. The “production” is rough in a sub-demo matter: Like listening to a blocky digital clipping that happens whenever the voice recorder is overloaded, which is often. Incubate hopes you can stand it. friday September 18th, 20:00 -20:45 Alternative / Paradox

And if you haven’t seen them in 2008, you SURELY don’t want to miss them. Their dance influenced mix of Velvet Underground and Black Sabbath has earned them praise all over Europe and credited them as the next best thing coming from Israel after The Monotonix. music program saturday Alabaster Suns (UK) With ex-members of Capricorns. The band’s complex time signatures and atypical riffs create a sound all their own as they seamlessly blend staggeringly heavy freight-train bludgeon with more mellow breakdowns. The only thing that matters is: It rocks like nothing you have ever heard before! saturday September 19th, 17:30 - 18:15 Post hardcore, Mathcore, Post metal / 013 Batcave

Altaar (NO) When you like droning drums, noisy guitars and growling voices (and who doesn’t, really?) you will really enjoy your favorite festival again this year. Altaar is a Norwegian band which can be described in the manner above. They push funeraldoom/noise out of their speakers and into your ears. Featuring members of Killl, JR Ewing and Motorpsycho. saturday September 19th, 21:15 - 22:00 Doom, Metal, Noise / Little Devil

An Emerald City (NZ) Emerald is a green and not very hard stone. Not the preferred material when you want to build a city. Nevertheless are there at least ten cities on the globe that have Emerald City as a nickname. Maybe because the stone is beautiful and mysterious. Qualities that can also be found in the music of An Emerald City. Melting oriental melodies with trance-like post rock structures, An Emerald City creates a flying carpet of sound that takes you right into a mythical Arab city and lets you fly around minarets and over the head of snake-charmers. Fly into that dreamy wonderland you always thought only theme-parks could create. saturday September 19th, 18:30 - 19:15 Post-rock, Instrumental / extase

Awol One (US) Aufgehoben (UK) This band from the UK improvises freejazz, rock, noise and many more styles into great compositions. “If you know what Francis Bacon did to Velazquez’s portrait of Pope Innocent X, then you’ll have some idea of what Aufgehoben are doing to rock music; reducing it to a violent, nightmarish smear of a thing. It’s cathartic, ugly, beautiful and hard to ignore.”, according to BBC Experimental Reviews. saturday September 19th, 20:00 - 20:45 Impro, Freejazz, Rock / Paradox

Awol One is a LA underground hip hop legend, known for his perfectly simple yet clever self analyzing lyrics and characteristic gruff voice. He has collaborated with high profile hip hop artists such as KRS One, Kool Keith and Atmosphere. Cam Deas (UK) Cam Deas is a folk musician who has released a string of EPs on various independent record labels, and his first LP, titled “My Guitar is Alive and It’s Singing”, was released in February 2009. This led him to the University of Sheffield where he is studying for a BA in Music. saturday September 19th, 22:00 - 22:30 Acoustic, Singer-songwriter / Pauluskerk

Cheveu (FR) Cheveu is electrogaragepunk that’s dirty because you rubbed it on the floor, not just because they don’t shower. The French trio reflect a particular lo-fi music box brand of electro post-punk, mix of cheap distorted guitars attempting rock and roll licks, crap drum machines and broken pianos. Wire magazine wrote that their “primitivism is lush enough to make you fall over” and we couldn’t agree more. saturday September 19th, 19:00 - 19:30 Punk, Electro rock / Weemoed

CJ Boyd (US) One man and a bass. CJ Boyd creates beautiful, intimate bass manipulations. Equal parts ambient and virtuosic, melancholic and playful, CJ Boyd’s bass playing melts glaciers, creating a sea of low, flowing rhythms, while also supplying melodies that soar over the ocean to melt the sun itself. Waves of bass loops are garnished with harmonica drones and constant improvisational exploration. This is deep-sea-diving for the hungry and alone. saturday September 19th, 18:30 - 19:00 Instrumental, Minimal / Pauluskerk

De Anale Fase (BE) De Anale Fase is a Belgium singer/songwriter duo that makes sweet melancholic folk music. The surrealistic lyrics remind one of the Dutch Spinvis. About their lyrics they say: “Most of the time people die in our songs. That does not happen on purpose, it happens accidental. We tell them to live, but behind our backs they suddenly die anyway.” This innocence can be found in their music also. The songs sound as if they are meant to be nice and sweet, but when the notes fade away, only melancholy remains. saturday September 19th, 21:30 - 22:00 Poetry, Folk, Surrealistic / Kafee ‘t Buitenbeentje

finn. (de) It would be very hard to write something about Finn. (Finndot) without mentioning Sigur Ros. But we’ll try. Not mentioning the fragile voice of this German, would be very strange, so we won’t go that way. If you would think about rivers, nostalgia, films or other things listening to Finn., we honestly don’t know, so we won’t go into that either. The only thing we do know is that he writes songs you, at least once in your life, should have paid attention to. Jandek (US) Since 1978, Jandek has self-released more than 50 albums of unusual, often emotionally dissolute folk and blues songs without ever granting more than the occasional interview or providing any biographical information. The singer stayed a mystery until 2004, when he gave his first performance. Jandek often uses open and unconventional chord structures, although the lyrics closely mirror the country blues and folk traditions of East Texas. Jandek absolutely is a phenomenon and this is your chance to see him play live!

Jessica Bailiff & Annelies Monseré (US) Jessica Bailiff is slowcore’s next best-kept secret. Blending shoegaze, post-rock and singer-songwriter folk with her voice into an angelic combination that you only thought existed in your dreams. Until now. Brothers and sisters, prepare yourselves forJesus of Spazzareth. A great, dual vocal do-it-yourself hardcore/punkrock band that present blazing thrashcore with influences from Poison Idea, Disfear and Black Flag. Those who’ll miss their show at Incubate, will simply die and go to hell. Amen.

Justice Yeldham (AU) Yeldham’s live performance consists of grinding his face into a sheet of mic’d up plate glass. It is hideously awesome for a variety of reasons. You get to view his face all squished up against the other side of the glass like a kid on a special bus wiping his nose down the window as you overtake them on the motorway. Another reason is that the sound really is quite nasty. Don’t try this at home, kids. Katadreuffe (NL) Katadreuffe incorporates elements from post-hardcore, noise, shoegaze, post-punk and pop. An almost constant rhythmic tension and a contrast between high frequency (in terms of pitch-shifting and density) and “delayed” atmospheric guitar parts are some of the music’s most prominent features. Khuda (UK) Less is more. This 2-piece from the UK called Khuda is living proof. Mostly people call it yellow or white, depending from where you look at it (earth or space). ThE CoLor oF ThE SuN are a band that can start just such a debate: is it surf, pop or rock? Or is it as the color of the sun: it depends from where you look at it. Youves (UK)

Your Demise collide head-on with every hurdle you can imagine. Equipment theft? Check. Multiple line-up changes? Check, and make that twelve. And how about the 24 hours the members of Your Demise spent in solitary confinement in a Belgian prison? But they are still here, still hungry, still going stronger than ever. Isn’t that hardcore? We hope these maniacs will reach Tilburg. saturday September 19th, 19:45 - 20:30 Hardcore, Deathmetal / Extase

Formerly known as Mirror! Mirror!, the UK band Youves apparently had to change their name after an American group with the same name had a shitfit. Soon all of the words in the English language will be taken and each band will simply go by ID numbers, like “Band 528462”. These guys might be a little crazy, but we think we need that in musicians. The boring guys never succeed, and Youves are anything but. This is Foals for people that find them pedestrian. saturday September 19th, 23:15 - 00:00 Indierock / Cul de Sac

AJ Holmes & The Hackney Empire

:Of the Wand & the

AJ Holmes & The

Moon: (DK)

Hackney Empire (UK)

One of the leading acts in the obscure neofolk scene. The music is characterized by the use of acoustic guitar and key board next to flute, cello, various drums, accordion and/or violin, and a whispering way of singing. A prominent role in the music, artwork and lyrics are pagan and runic themes. All this together creates a strong dark but very soothing ambient atmosphere. sunday September 20th, 16:00 - 16:30 Folk, Neofolk / Pauluskerk

A.J. Holmes & The Hackney Empire play a distinctive blend Kwaito, Kuduro, Afro Indie, Tropical Dance, Turkish pop, Afro pop, Rumba and everything in between and do this incredibly well. That’s why they’re currently resident band at the monthly London Tropical party Secousse and have recently played with David Byrne at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Not bad, right? So check out these cheerful chaps and swing your butt off. sunday September 20th, 19:30 - 20:30 Dance, Afro, Tropical / Muzetuin

Aluk Todolo (FR) Experimental black metal influenced by people such as Hermann Nitsch and Albin Julius (Der Blutharsch). With the goal to create a timeless, organic mix of krautrock’s strangeness and black metal’s coldness, Aluk Todolo conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars. Subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magic summonings. Very dark. Very scary. Very nice.

Ashtray Navigations (UK) Ashtray Navigations are a psychedelic noise project. Whilst the music evades easy categorization due to variations in sound, approach and personnel, it often incorporates extended droning and lengthy guitar pieces. Not exactly easylistening, but it is one of those interesting artists you come to Incubate for.

Anything Maria (FR) Amolvacy (US) Amolvacy includes members of Volcano the Bear, No-Neck Blues Band and the Laboratory Theater Group. The band creates compositions from its improvisations, centred around strong elemental percussion, radical theatrical vocals, and classical acoustic instruments. sunday September 20th, 17:15 - 18:00 Avantgarde, Experimental, Folk / Paradox

The promising young singer and guitarist Anything Maria follows in the footsteps of those women (PJ Harvey, Courtney Love, Juliana Hatfield, Patti Smith or Kristin Hersh) who have a voice and make it known with their rough, raw and unrefined rock. sunday September 20th, 14:30 - 15:00 Indierock, Experimental / Sounds

Bain Wolfkind (AU) The music of Bain Wolfkind could be described as a minimalised and postindustrialised version of artists like Lee Hazlewood with dark brooding vocals and slow blues, rock, country, psychedelic, cinematic, surf, swamp and electronic overtones. The lyrical content draws heavily from crime fiction, blues, country and Americana. sunday September 20th, 18:15 - 19:00 music noir / Hall of Fame

Blakfish (UK) One of the newest and rawest bands and one of the brightest talents in the UK today. Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you Blakfish. bodi bill

63

Bodi Bill (DE) Bodi Bill is easy to dance to, but also for listening pleasure. Think of a laidback version of The Knife with a touch of Depeche Mode, without the pretentious frills that surround it. In die Heimat they are already boosting and now we can decide for ourselves if Bodi Bill is for dancing or for listening. Or maybe both. sunday September 20th, 21:30 -22:15 Electronic, Pop / Cul de Sac

Brethren Of The Free Blues Control (US) Blues Control are a psychedelic Queens NYC, New York band featuring the members of Watersports: Russ Waterhouse (guitar, electronics, tapes) and Lea Cho (keyboards, electronics). Their work is characterized by spaced out churchlady keyboard patterns, done in rock vocabularies and possessing metrics that belong solely to the realm of freedom and singularity. Something like Holy Fuck, but then sexier. sunday September 20th, 19:00 - 19:45 Psychedelic / v39

Spirit (US) Old things can be cool, no seriously. That is, when some cool dude does cool stuff with it, of course. Like Jozef van Wissem. He plays the lute in Brethren Of The Free Spirit. Together with guitarist James Blackshaw, he puts forth experimental folk with an ethereal, almost religious feel. sunday September 20th, 17:30 - 18:00 avantgarde, folk, acoustic / pauluskerk

Bronnt Industries Kapital (UK) Bronnt Industries Kapital is the work of UK-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Guy Bartell, who has spent eight years exploring deep frosts of electroacoustic melancholy, slow-burning sonic terrain and uncharted detours into the absurd. He draws as much inspiration from myriad marginal movies as from the dance roots of Krautrock.

Constellations (UK) When you are in Tilburg during Incubate 2009 and all of a sudden you find yourself walking the mountain tops of the Himalaya, you most probably stumbled into the Constellations gig. Constellations is a musician that creates sonic panorama views of mountain tops that makes the listener believe he or she is an eagle flying through that tranquil space filled with fresh mountain air. This is your ambient post-rock ticket to relaxation.

Crocus (UK) Unsatisfied with former projects, Crocus decided to quicken the pace, up the beats and pour every last drop of honesty and emotion they have. With ethics and values as important to the band members as the sound itself, they are all about honest expression, self-exploration and integrity. They combine elements of 90’s screamo and power violence and are an amazing live band. sunday September 20th, 19:15 - 20:00 Screamo / Little Devil der blutharsch

Deepkiss720 (UK) The Noisicians Noisician. Jason Williams (aka Deepkiss 720) is one of UK noise music’s best-kept secrets. A typically eclectic and terminally unclassifiable opus featuring genre-bending plunderphonics, lo:tech glitch, pre-lap top cut ups and general sonic mayhem. sunday September 20th, 17:45 - 18:15 Noise / v39

Der Blutharsch (AT) Der Blutharsch create a marching music of bombastic rhythms and folkish melodies, often infused with historical military speeches and orchestral samples. Their early works are minimalistic samplebased instrumentals in an industrial/ ambient vein. Later, they switched to a more folk/acoustic sound, and their latest release takes Der Blutharsch in a more experimental wave/rock direction. Diverse to say the least, Der Blutharsch does not follow musical paths they do not choose themselves. sunday September 20th, 20:45 - 21:45 music noir, Experimental / Hall of Fame

This is your chance to see if the label founder of the famous Cold Meat Industry can create some good music himself. We can tell you right now: this is ambient industrial of the highest quality. Gregg Kowalsky (US) Kowalsky completed a Master of Fine Arts degree in Electronic Music and Recording Media. His compositions range from drone and noise to meditative psychedelics. His recent series of Tape Chants explores the acoustics where the performances occur by setting up cassette players around the space, using only the cassette players’ speakers for amplification. Throughout the piece, Gregg moves around the space adjusting the amplitude of the players as a live mix. sunday September 20th, 16:30 - 17:15

Fol Chen (US) You know that mysterious black object that the creepy family is staring at on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Presence” album? Fol Chen sounds like that… But they don’t sound like Led Zeppelin. Instead, they sound like Prince with Amon Duul II and a children’s religious revival, not to mention Hot Chip, Pink Floyd, Gwen Stefani, Pere Ubu, Danielson Famile, Scritti Politti, Boards of Canada, The Blow, and Pulp. sunday September 20th, 18:45 - 19:30 Beats, Rock / 013 Batcave

hank bobbit (US) Hank is a Hillbilly Butch Dyke who’ll take you straight to heaven with a classic rockabilly sound. The homemade songs are presented by a character who stands tall in this hostile world with her greasy pompadour. She protects herself from many distractions, but stands helpless in front of one: Women. As she pounds out song after song about girls, heartbreak and more girls on her acoustic guitar, sweat pours down her face and the spirit of rock’n roll breaks way in its simplest, rawest form... sunday September 20th, 15:30 - 16:00 Country, weird / weemoed

Holy State (UK)

I Love Sarah (BE)

Holy State has its influences, but the guys don’t go as far as wearing them on their sleeves. No, they tattoo their necks with them. Influences from Drive Like Jehu and the Jesus Lizard has resulted in a sound that pays strong reference to their heroes. This is no imitation though, taking their cues from the new wave of punk bands like Fucked Up, Gallows and The Bronx. sunday September 20th, 15:45 - 16:30

I Love Sarah is a strange pop outfit from Mechelen. Their music is a weird trip through synthpop, jazz, metal, hardcore, mathrock, surf, folk and noise. Sometimes even during one single song. As I Love Sarah finds that humor belongs in music they sing about the Irish resistance to the Chinese invaders. sunday September 20th, 15:30 - 16:00 Indie, Experimental / sounds

James Blackshaw (UK) When UK-native James Blackshaw plays his 12-string guitar, something spiritual takes place. In his part improvised and part written songs, Blackshaw makes expert use of Eastern and Western scales, chord changes reminiscent of European classical music and incredibly intricate fingerpicking patterns. The result is a sound that is both challengingly minimalistic, yet warm and approachable to anybody who might hear it, with a rare sensitivity that conveys both immense beauty, hope and sadness. sunday September 20th, 18:30 - 19:00 Acoustic, Avantgarde / pauluskerk

Jozef van Wissem (NL) Jozef van Wissem is a Dutch minimalist composer and lute player. Van Wissem wrote out mirror images of hundreds of classical lute tablature pieces, copying them out from the bottom right to the top left corner. To these inversions he added new themes, accents and rhythms. He then applied the “cut up” technique of writer William Burroughs and cut, shifted, mixed and pasted the parts together to create new works. One critic has compared this work to that of German painter Georg Baselitz, who paints upside down. sunday September 20th, 18:00 - 18:30 Acoustic, Avantgarde / Pauluskerk

Kim Janssen (NL) Listening to artists like David Bazan, Iron and Wine and At The Close Of Every Day, Kim Janssen crafts mellow tunes that bare his soul through poetically molded lyrics sweeping you through his journeys of moral and emotional complexity. sunday September 20th, 16:45 - 17:15 Singer-songwriter, Pop / Pauluskerk

Los Siquicos Litoraleños (ARG) The music of Los Siquicos Litoraleños is a mix of cumbia, subtle noise, lo-fi tape manipulation and a rich variety of nonrock rhythms. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou (BEN) One of the hidden musical treasures of Africa has been around since the seventies and goes by the catchy name of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou. Their funky Afro beat music is inspired by the rhythms of voodoo, the religion originating from their home country Benin. Two voodoo rhythms dominate the orchestra: Sato, an energetic rhythm performed using an immense vertical drum, and Sakpata, dedicated to the divinity that protects people against smallpox. Psychedelic guitars and crazy organs induce these rhythms with funk and soul. sunday September 20th, 14:30 - 15:30 Afro beat, Funk / muzetuin

Stranger Son of WB are known for making Funk & Post Punk with mesmerizing hooks. There’s an orchestrated quality that begin to buzz and throb in your head. The bass has a hungry growl as the guitar cuts across the whole delivery with a brittle array of slams and grinding mantras that also mutate into smooth, angular hypnotic sequences. The drum beats are stark and have obvious references to those embryonic electronic days of Joy Division. sunday September 20th, 16:30 - 17:00 Funk, Post Punk / Kafee ‘t Buitenbeentje

nitsch

nitsch Highly controversial for some, highly regarded by others. Hermann Nitsch is someone you need to have an opinion on. As a prominent member of the Viennese Actionism movement, Nitsch is one of the instigators of performance art. 50 years ago, Nitsch introduced his first ideas for the Orgien Mysterien Theater: performances that draw inspiration from the ancient sacrifice ritual, where Christian and liturgical elements are interwoven with heathen and pagan practices. His work is highly multi-disciplinary: combining Wagners ideas of gesamtkunstwerk (‘total art’), Jackson Pollocks action painting and the Theatre of Cruelty of Antonin Artaud. His work has had a strong impact on visual art, contemporary dance as and musical genres like industrial and black metal. During the festival Nitsch’ full range of work will be shown. Incubate gives the opportunity to see this important artist at work on his actions, music and philosophy.

a part of nitsch’s handwritten script

nitsch

Exhibition: ‘Kreuzwegstationen’ Nitsch’s paintings bare a lot of resemblances to his performances. Mainly because the painted patterns remind one of the rubbing movements that take place during his Actions; either with paint, entrails or fruit. Nitsch paints in series and throws (mostly red) paint all over the vast canvas, afterwards altering them with his hands. Museum for contemporary art ‘De Pont’ presents an overview of some of Hermann Nitsch’ painted works, with paintings that have never before been seen in the Netherlands. From September 5th till October 4th, 11:00 -17:00 (closed on mondays) / museum de pont Free entrance with an Incubate wristband during the festival

81

Exhibition Scripts Hermann Nitsch carefully plans his performances through handwritten scripts. But is it possible to translate the intensity of the Actions to paper? The Scryption museum for written communication is turned into an easy accessible centre of documentation. Masterclass Incubate gives the unique opportunity to several students to talk about their mode of production with Hermann Nitsch. Just like in the interview with Henk Oosterling on Sunday 13th, the public will get a chance to get better acquainted with the incentives and methods of working of Nitsch. But of course students ask different questions than a philosopher. Hermann Nitsch is a professor at the University of Vienna with the Arts and Drama faculty, and therefore has a extended experience in dealing with students. This Master class will be open to the public.

Tussen Kunst en Nitsch, interview What drives this multidisciplinary artist avant la lettre? What is his reason to spend all his life seeking for, and crossing over, the borders of genres and the borders of public morality? In this live interview philosopher and Nitsch-expert Henk Oosterling tries to get closer to the versatile and distinct character of Hermann Nitsch. Sunday September 13th, 20:00 / nwe vorst

Organ concert Nitsch’s favorite instrument is the organ. He will perform one of his own pieces in the Pauluskerk. His music is characterized by a cloud of sounds and long-held, droning tones. Sometimes you’ll hear Wagner influences, but improvisation and volume are equally important. thursday September 17th, 20:00 / Pauluskerk

new jacks Opening evening: Thursday September 17th , 16:00 – 20:00 @ Duvelhok From friday september 18th till sunday september 20th 14:00 - 20:00 @ duvelhok New Jacks is project initiated by Incubate, together with artist collective WEI from Eindhoven, artist studio complex TAC in Eindhoven and the AVANS art academies in Den Bosch and Breda. Its aim is to present the most interesting artists that have graduated from one of the Brabant Province Art Academies in the last five years. These young artists get a place present their work outside the regular art circuit. This will help them to make new connections with other (international) artists and hopefully help put them on a path towards their own individual career in visual arts. For the first edition we’ve asked the artists to make work inspired by Incubates main guest Hermann Nitsch and the Viennese Actionists and examine the theme’s used in their work.

Jak Peters (nl) Jak Peters likes to surprise the viewer. He creates normal, everyday things into strange materials. An apple made out of snow. A house made from French fries. He likes to emulate things in strange materials, sometimes giving the object a mechanical feature. Peters graduated from the Art Academy in 2006 and earned a Lucas Award for his final presentation. The self-evidential style and the diversity in composition and materials delivers surprising and humorous works.

Leonie Ruissen (nl) Leonie Ruissen graduated from the school of fine arts in 2006. The medium in which she works varies, but her work is always about expressing her inner world of feelings and thoughts. For this occasion she chooses poetry, singing and performing.

Liselotte de Groot (nl) Besides a photographer, Liselotte also is a performance artist, vj, dj and performs with her two bands. Merijn Denkers (nl) Merijn Denkers graduated on visuals arts at St. Joost in 2008. He now searches for reconciliation of his nomadic nature. In his video installations history and philosophy goes hand in hand with the irrational.

Michiel van de Weerthof (nl) Michiel van de Weerthof is everything: from an orchestrator, composer, songwriter, songsmith, audio-designer, musician, performer, graphical designer, film maker, visual artist, choreographer and all round showman.

Renée van Trier (nl) liselotte de groot

manon van Trier (nl) Manon van Trier is a multi disciplinary artist. She uses a wide arsenal of visual means to escape the absurdity of the world that surrounds us. The impossibility of escape leads to tragic comic images that really don’t want to be tragic or comic.

Renée van Trier’s work is created from planned as well as coincidental moments. In her performance she works with different disciplines, such as videos, photographs, installations, and soundscapes. The human body is an important subject in the works and she plays with the time span, rhythm, and repetition. In 2009 Van Trier did a residency program at the MFA Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California.

Vincent Dams (nl) Vincent Dams has never seen a whale in real life and has never been in a hot air balloon, but he always looks up when one is floating around. Vincent Dams loves Sole, backed in rich butter and is very much an indoor person. That’s why he likes to sit around and hum in other people’s gardens. Vincent Dams tried to paste Zappa’s moustache on Nietsche’s face and vice versa the other day, but decided to go on a bike ride because of the nice weather.

space that can be filled

space that can be filled From Monday september 14th till sunday september 20th @ nwe vorst Contemporary dance is more than imitating a dying swan. It’s a physical spectacle in which the body becomes a weapon to give food for thought to the audience. Incubate presents ‘Space that can be filled.’ It’s a dance program which shows the diversity of contemporary dance and performance art. The dance program is divided in two parts: performances that are influenced by Hermann Nitsch, the main guest on Incubate. And autonomous performances of artists. But what all artists have in common, is their controversial approach to dance, their free and cutting edge minds and that they aren’t afraid to walk the cultural boundaries.

Doris Stelzer (AU) ‘Views in Process’ takes a look behind the superficiality of clichés and stereotypes in the media’s presentation of the body. Doris Stelzer has a fascination for movement and how we think about ourselves and others. In ‘Views in Process’ this is combined in a show that does embody a lot of movement that you do not necessarily have to call dancing. In this way, she uses the body to critique socialpolitical views on body images. monday September 14th, 20:30 / nwe vorst

Nuno Lucas (PT) ‘Pongo Land’ is a meeting of two very different bodies. Exploring differences, similarities and possible or impossible relationships between each other, Nuno Lucas and Hermann Heisig are reducing questions about civilization and order into a primitive landscape, in which they constantly compare, compete and copy, creating a state of permanent modulation... tuesday September 15th, 20:30 / nwe vorst

Franko B and Kamal Ackarie (UK) How far can you go with your own body? Until recently, Franko B used to bleed heavily during performances, but stopped for health reasons. But his new performance ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ is intriguing either way. Franko B joined forces with Kamal Ackarie (Technical Director for Diamanda Galas a.o.) to create an intertwining of performance and visual arts. Franko B’s body is presented naked and unpainted, leaving his many tattoos uncovered. The audience is allowed time to look at his body, to approach it as a sculptural form. After ICA in London and Palais des Beaux-Art in Brussels, the performance will have its Dutch premiere at Incubate. wednesday September 16th, 20:30h & 22:30 / nwe vorst

Pavlos Kountouriotis

Pavlos Kountouriotis (US) Not only being a choreographer, Pavlos Kountouriotis is also a legal expert. And he writes a lot as well. About dance, pornography, violence and the manipulation of images. Inspired by Susan Sontag’s last book about war photography ‘Regarding the Pain of Others’, this lecturer at the University of Chester will bring his vision on violence in the form of a ‘lecture performance’.

Costes (FRA) Shockpunker GG Allin once said that his body was public property, including everything coming out of it. Noise artist/ performer Jean Louis Costes must have heard this quote. Just like GG Allin and the Viennese Aktionists, Costes also uses various bodily juices, sexual gestures and religious symbolism to pour power into his performances. For Incubate this Frenchmen will give a special performance inspired by this year’s central guest Hermann Nitsch.

inqubate From Monday september 14th till Thursday september 17th @ Paradox QU Junktions from Bristol will be our ‘club in residence’ this year. Last year the people from BLA in Oslo treated us to a week of new and innovative music from their country. And now we cross over to that glorious city by the Bristol Channel called eerrmm… Bristol! Cary Grant, Wallace & Gromit and tarmac all have one thing in common; they all began life in Bristol. This is also where Banksy created his most famous works of art and where Blackbeard the Pirate used to live. You’ll be surprised at how many popular TV programs are filmed in Bristol and which worldwide recording artists started out here. Bristol’s music scene has a reputation for innovation, experimentation and quality. In the past the city has been home to a wide range of artists who’ve drawn their inspiration from the cities wide ranging musical cross-currents. Most of us remember the heady days of Bristol’s trip-hop scene in the late ‘90s when Portishead, Massive Attack, Roni Size and Tricky broke through into the mainstream. The message is clear - there’s a lot of talent in the city, so come by to see the inQUbate program and check out some of the best new artists coming up from the city and/or buzzing around The Cube, the second home of the QU people...

Nancy Elizabeth (UK) Nancy Elizabeth has one of Northern England’s finest voices. She is a gifted multi-instrumentalist and the piano has recently become central to her performances. She sings extraordinarily magical yet honest songs and has that special gift for moving audiences into appreciative wonderment with her ambiguous lyrics and emotional songs. Nancy has that unquestionable strength of conviction, emotionally terse lyrics and lack of fluffiness. Her new album ‘Wrought Iron’ is out on Leaf in October.

hauschka (De) Hauschka is the Düsseldorf-based pianist Volker Bertelmann, who plays the piano in a myriad of ways. His music can be microscopic in detail and quietly entrancing, or widescreen and cinematic in scope and feel. His beautiful post-classical chamber works draw on minimalism and are laced with the spirit of Fluxus. The results are startlingly original and vivid yet immediately accessible - Eric Satie’s mischievous miniatures, Indonesian gamelan and The Books all get a look in.

(BRA, 2009, Bruno Natal)

(DK, 2007, Rosforth)

“Dub Echoes” is a documentary that traces the origins of the Jamaican dub music and its influence on the development of hip hop and electronic music. The film shows how the Jamaican invention called dub ended up influencing much of the music we hear today, from electronic music to hip-hop, transforming the studio in a musical instrument and giving way to all of sonic experiments.

Dancehall is the music of the poor working class, and even if it’s all about looking flashy and being all sexed up in front of the video camera, the tension is bubbling up from under the surface - not least in the raw and ultra-sexual dance, which can easily take place up in trees and on top of lampposts, while living up to the deeply-rooted homophobia that accompanies it...

American Artifact (USA, 2009, Merle Becker)

American Artifact chronicles the rise of American rock poster art since its birth in the ‘60s. Director Merle Becker crosses the country interviewing rock poster artists from the different eras to discover that America is currently in the midst of a 21st century “rock poster art movement”, where thousands of artists around the country are doing silk screened rock poster art inspired by their local scene, the music of our time, and the spirit of our era.

Mr. Catra the Faithful (DK, 2005, Rosforth)

Mr Catra calls himself O Fiel, The Faithful, and he is indeed very faithful, in his own way, to God and to his facção, Comando Vermelho, the most powerful criminal organization in Brazil. This film offers you an insight into a unique part of Rio de Janeiro that the official Brazilian society abstains from acknowledging. Poverty-ridden and druglord-controlled, the favelas, for the most part, are totally inaccessible to cameras. This film is the exception.

z-stock Friday September 18th & Saturday September 19th from 14.00 till 22.00 Sunday September 20th, from 13.00 till 21.00 @ Pieter Vreedeplein The best concert posters have always captured both the essence of the music they promoted and the spirit of the time in which they were produced. This is as true today as it was in San Francisco during the Sixties. Z-Stock provides the public with an opportunity to see fine poster art and to meet the artists who’ve created it. During Incubate, the best concert poster designers from all over the world will display and sell their work in the best context possible. It will give you the opportunity to explore different styles within the visual ‘genre’ of the concert poster. There will also be a small market with clothes and music. You can also enjoy vegan food, while watching the posters. American Artifact If you are interested in the history of the concert poster, we advise you to see American Artifact, which will be showed during the Incubate film program ‘Film at Incubate’. Highly recommended for poster art n00bs and experts alike!

On Monday, Saturday and Sunday Kraaklink collaborates with November Music. They created the ‘Composers Club’ especially for young, relatively unknown composers. A recent solo work of a young composer is played and afterwards the composer will tell about his/her work. The audience is invited to participate and to ask questions

incubate innovation lecture 113

incubate innovation lecture Friday September 18th, 14:00 @ NWE Vorst At Incubate we love to innovate. So every year we organize the Incubate Innovation Lecture about innovation in the cultural territory. This year Incubate invited Andrew Keen to give a keynote speech. Keen is a web entrepreneur as well as a web critic. In 1995 he founded Audiocafe. com and built it into a well-known first generation Internet music company. But after a while, Keen saw the negative impact of the democratization of the internet and the web 2.0 hype. He wrote The Cult of the Amateur, which became an international bestseller and earned Andrew Keen the nickname ‘The Antichrist of Silicon Valley’. He has written for many other publications including The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, The London Guardian, Forbes, The Weekly Standard, Prospect, Fast Company and Entertainment Weekly. Currently he is a columnist for the Daily Telegraph. After the keynote speech, a discussion between an international panel of experts

from the fields of arts, economy and politics will take place. Panelist will be Konrad Boehmer, Hans Abbing, Amelia Andersdotter and James Kirby. The discussion will be moderated by Xandra Schutte. The Incubate Innovation Lecture is organized in cooperation with BKKC, Muziekcentrum Nederland and De Groene Amsterdammer and is part of the ambition of Brabant to become European Capital of Culture in 2018. andrew keen

114 wardruna

wardruna Saturday September 19th, 21:00 - 00:00 @ Natuurtheater Imagine: The sun is setting in a forest far, far away of the buzzing city and noisy indie bands swarming around Tilburg. Torches will be lit and Wardruna takes the stage. They’ll immediately take you on a journey through the dark forests, fjords and caves reining the Norwegian landscape. The Norwegian band Wardruna will give a special one-off performance at the Incubate festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands. The ambient folk project of black metal musicians Kvitrafn (Jotunspor, ex-Gorgoroth) and Gaahl (God Seed, ex-Gorgoroth) will perform at an amphitheater in the middle of a forest. Wardruna received raving reviews on their 2009 debut Gap Var Ginnunga. Bandleader Kvitrafn threw his metal roots overboard to make an album full of dark ambient folk. The album is a musical journey through the history of Norwegian mythology and paganism, made with traditional Norwegian instruments as the goat horn and tagelharp. Also sounds of trees, stones, water and

fire can be heard on the album. Shows of Wardruna are scarce, but always memorable. Previously, the band played on a Viking ship and in a chapel on a mountain. The surroundings gives the music a stronger mystical feel. The show of Wardruna in the Nature theater of Oisterwijk is the only Dutch show of the band. The concert will be introduced with a lecture on the history of paganism and esotericism in Europe. This very special performance of Wardruna will be open for everyone with a Incubate 2009 dayticket for Saturday and of course all Incubate 2009 passepartouts. The bus ride will cost â‚Ź3,- You can also get there by own transportation A cooperation between Incubate and Schatten van Brabant. putting the arts back into darts V/Vm is mainly known for his audio projects. Since the mid nineties he’s been raping, recycling and then releasing remixes of popular pop songs. This way of working is also known as ‘Plunderphonics’. In between he’s also been composing his own electronic music and doing lots of live shows across the world. In 2006 he performed at our ZXZW festival and in that same year he gave away over 600 releases for free. This way, V/Vm is busy with issues about copyright, creative commons and original versus copied works. In this year’s project he’ll combine these issues with his passion for darting. He invites all the Incubate artists as well as students from the Avans and Fontys Hogeschool to dart and discuss along at Kunstpodium T. The gallery will be turned into Incubates own Dart-Café. Besides darts and discussions, there will also be room for V/Vm’s enormous amount of outsider-like cd/lp artwork he made for his audio releases. These works often involve pop culture icons transformed into typical V/ Vm parodies.
