A note from the editor

WHILE we might still be experiencing a few summery days, there’s definitely a nip in the air signalling the onset of winter.

And it seemed to have happened overnight.

As a member of The 5am club, it’s suddenly become more and more challenging to wake up in the morning. Just a few weeks ago I could still enjoy my coffee while watching the sun rise but these days 5am looks and feels like the middle of the night and I find myself hitting the snooze button way too many times.

Besides the morning struggles, I’ve already had to start dipping into my winter wardrobe and layering has become essential. My longsleeved tops are slowly making their way to the front of my wardrobe.

I can no longer wear my Crocs without socks. Yes, I wear Crocs and yes, I wear them with socks.

If you have the same struggles then this issue is for you.

In our Autumn issue, we share tips on how to get your wardrobe autumn-ready. During autumn one can easily experience four seasons in one day. This means you’ll need to start making a few little changes to your wardrobe. Adding new accessories like gloves and hats is an easy way to update your wardrobe.

As the temperatures start to drop it affects our skin as well, which means it’s time to take a look at your skincare routine. Our beauty section is filled with tips on how to change your skincare routine to keep your skin looking healthy in autumn.

With winter slowly creeping up on us and as we brace ourselves for cold months ahead, let’s enjoy the few sunny and warm days that are still lingering but be sure to keep a jacket at hand.

Make these changes to your skincare routine

GERRY CUPIDO

I’M sure by now you’ve noticed that the weather has already started changing.

Early mornings are not only darker, but there’s a definite chill in the air, yet the afternoons can still reach peak summer temperatures.

This can leave us a bit confused about not only what to wear, but how to treat our skin.

Here’s how autumn affects your skin and how you should change your skincare routine. With cooler temperatures come dry skin and dehydration. We’ve already had the occasional rainy days and extreme wind. This causes the skin to experience more redness and inflammation.

Because of the cooler weather, there’s often the misconception that sunblock is no longer needed as much as during summer. With people using less sunblock, it leaves their skin exposed to the harmful effects of sun exposure, causing sunburn.

Here are some tips on how to start changing your skincare routine for autumn.

DON’T FORGET TO STAY HYDRATED

When the temperature starts to drop, people are less inclined to stay hydrated. Summer heat forces us to do so. This means drinking more water, consuming foods that are hydrating and using hydrating serums and moisturisers.

START USING FACIAL OILS

In summer, facial oils tend to leave your skin feeling too greasy. However, the dryer months to come are an ideal time to include them in your skincare routine. Opt for oils that are rich in antioxidants and antiinflammatory properties.

CHANGE YOUR LIGHT MOISTURISER TO A THICK, RICH CREAM

Due to the humidity in summer, you can get away with using a light moisturiser, but as the temperature drops, it’s time to upgrade to a thick facial cream that offers hydration and acts as a barrier between skin and the dry air.

EASE UP ON EXFOLIATING

While exfoliating has its benefits, it can be harsh on the skin. It can increase sensitivity, irritation and redness. During the autumn months, the skin is already experiencing a lot of changes – give your skin a break from such harsh treatments. Focus on protecting your skin instead.

Take care of your locs

I’VE had locs for almost fiveand-a-half years, excluding when I cut them off in 2020 because of the pandemic.

While it was refreshing not to have long hair, I missed them dearly and decided to reinstall them last year.

Some people think locs are easier to maintain because there’s no combing involved. However, like all-natural hair, they can be challenging, especially in cooler weather.

Here’s how you can take care of your locs this season.

THOBILE MAZIBUKO

WASH DAYS

Locs don’t necessarily need to be blow-dried. After washing them, use a microfibre towel and air dry them.

APPLY LIGHT OILS

The best oils to use for your locs are castor and argan oils. Not only do they protect your locs and give them sufficient nutrients, but these oils are also good for the scalp.

REMOVE BUILD-UP

Do not apply dye to cover up build-up. Instead, mix apple cider vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and hot water and soak your locs to remove the build-up from the oils you’re using. This is not something you do every month because it can lead to breakage; do it only when necessary.

DO NOT OVER STYLE

Like all hair, locs need to breathe. Sometimes you have to forget the styling and let your locs hang loose. Over-styling your locs can cause your hairline to recede because of all the pulling.

AVOID BLEACHING

Bleaching is not always good for the hair, especially if you have thin locs. I remember one time I was at the salon and this girl had bleached her hair. You could see the regret in her eyes but the damage was already done. Her locs had thinned out and were hanging by a thread. In situations like that, you probably have to cut them and start all over again.

COVER WITH A SILK BONNET

When you go to bed, cover your locs with a silk bonnet or scarf. Alternatively, use a satin pillowcase on your pillow. Also helps ward off facial wrinkles.

Get your wardrobe AUTUMN-READY

In autumn you can experience all four seasons in one day. Therefore, it’s important to get your wardrobe ready for the transition.

AFTER a wonderful summer, the time to say goodbye to hot summer nights and long lazy days on the beach is rapidly approaching.

Making the transition from summer to winter isn’t pleasant for those not quite ready to pack away their bikinis and cheeky shorts.

Here are a few simple ideas to help ease you into autumn.

Don’t rush out and buy a whole new wardrobe. Assess your winter wardrobe; yes, that means unpacking everything and finding what you have that can be used right now.

You most likely have a few classic winter garments. While they are your forever go-to’s, they might need some freshening up.

For now, you won’t be needing that thick puffer jacket or long woollen coat but a light trench coat and blazer are ideal. Those jeans that you missed wearing in summer, now’s the time to bring them out, especially the heavier, dark-toned ones.

Don’t be in too much of a hurry to pack away your summer frocks just yet. Add a pair of tights, swop your summer sandals for ankle boots or chunky socks with your favourite sneakers, and you’re ready for the cooler weather.

That lightweight blazer you unpacked can come in handy when you’re heading out for a smart occasion. Throwing a classic black blazer over any summer look will not only add a bit of warmth but elevate your look. Opt for an oversized jacket and you’ll be bang on-trend. Transitioning is all about layering. Always have a lightweight knitted sweater on hand. Bodysuits will offer a layer of warmth if you’re not keen on outerwear. Layer a button-down shirt over a T-shirt or wear the shirt underneath a sleeveless pullover knit.

A shirt can be worn over a dress instead of a cardigan.

And when it comes to shoes, swop sandals for ballet pumps, loafers, sneakers or ankle boots. Don’t forget about accessories. Scarves, hats and beanies are ideal since you can simply remove them without ruining your outfit.

Sweaters and hoodies are perfect for the in-between weather. Always have one on hand when you’re heading out during the day.

Colours to wear this season

AUTUMN is my favourite season. Not only because I was born in April, but because I adore the weather. It’s not hot, nor cold, just chilled. My kind of weather. Autumn is the season when fashionistas give us a glimpse of what to expect in winter. They try on different items and colours that could make a fun, warm winter. Here are some top five colours that you should be wearing this season.

Ginger

This colour gives both summer and winter vibes. Depending on how you pair it, it usually pops in Autumn, giving you a bright, bold look. It matches well with brown, making the perfect Autumn combo.

Nudes

It cannot be Autumn without any nudes. Nudes are perfect if you want to put on a lazy look but still be on par. Nude sweatpants and tank tops will forever be on trend, thanks to COVID-19 for making loungewear a thing.

Black

It is the ultimate colour. In the township slang, it is called “colour ya manyora” (which can be translated to “colour of the top dogs”).

Olive green

A classic. I wouldn’t recommend wearing olive green during the day unless it’s cargo pants. It is the colour you would want to wear on a dinner date. Don a satin olive green dress or a suit. That way, you are guaranteed a sultry look. For a day look, opt for lime green and match it with black to stand out.

Pink

We are not in winter yet, so we are trying to bring out as many colours as possible. What I like about pink is that it’s fit for every season. In Autumn, you can use it to break colours. For example, if you’re wearing a black outfit, you can throw in a pink coat to add more flair to your outfit. It’s that girl that’s forever ready to save the day.

WHILE it might not be full-on winter yet, there’s most definitely a chill in the air. Many of us are not quite ready to let go of our summer wardrobe, and you certainly don’t have to just yet. Adding these accessories to your look can gradually take your style from summer to autumn before winter sets in.

Stockings

Warm stockings are the ideal wardrobe additions to transition a summer look into autumn. Wear them under a summer dress or even a pair of shorts. While thick black tights will always be a safe bet, try wearing bright printed stockings for a more playful look.

Boots

It’s not quite thigh-high boots weather but you can certainly start to introduce into your autumn wardrobe. Ankle boots ideal for the in-between weather. Chunky lace-up boots continue to be all the rage. They are chic while adding a little quirkiness to an outfit.

Neckerchief

Neckerchiefs can be worn in so many different styles. If yours is big enough, you can even wrap it over your head.

yet, boots boots are Chunky rage. quirkiness

Loafers

If you didn’t get yourself a pair last season, it is best you invest in a pair now. Loafers continue to be a top shoe choice for the season. What we love most about loafers is that you can easily dress them up or down.

Gloves

Gloves are making a huge comeback this season. While it’s still fairly balmy during the day right now, there’s no harm in looking around for a classic pair of opera gloves for the chilly nights out.

5nail trends for autumn

WHILE our nails are small, we can still have so much fun getting creative with them. From various shapes to hundreds of colours to choose from and interesting textures to work with, the possibilities are endless.

However every season there are nail trends that take over the manicure scene and have everyone desiring “the look”.

Here are this season’s must-try nail trends.

GERRY CUPIDO

French tips

It’s time for the classic French manicure look to once again go back to its minimalist roots. Keep the white tips short and add a high-gloss finish.

Half-moon

Still on the minimalistic trends, halfmoon nails are the simple nail trend that’s making a comeback. The look involves painting a single colour on the entire nail but leaving the half-moon at the base of your nail showing. The look works for all nail lengths and shapes.

Velvet

Velvet nails are perhaps the most luxe-looking trend of the season. The sumptuous texture elevates any colour from deep blues to shimmering silver and everything in between.

Red

Red is one of this season’s biggest colour trends. We’ve seen it on the runway all over Autumn-Winter 23 fashion week shows.

Micro

“Barely-there” is this year’s buzzword. From barely-there make-up to barelythere brows, beauty trends are taking a giant leap away from the over-thetop dramatic looks we’ve been seeing.
