Editor’s note AFTER what feels like an endless summer, winter is slowly starting creeping up on us. While the dark icy mornings and long nights might not be everyone’s cup of hot chocolate, it does make for fab fashion moments. Oh to cover up in layers of comfy knits and over-size coats. To wrap up and cover up with long wool scarves and fluffy beanies. What’s not love? Last winter the pandemic kept us indoors and far away from all the elements. Untouched by the icy winds and heavy rain, we were careful not to leave ourselves vulnerable to the virus. Even though COVID-19 continues to be a real part of our lives, we are leaving our homes more but taking the utmost caution while doing so. Returning to work, attending social gatherings and basically just trying get back to “normality” while masked up and sanitized. Last year’s winter wardrobe, which basically consisted of PJs, gowns, slippers and tracksuits, will have to remain strictly indoors where is belongs. However, it did have one benefit - comfort.. Women wanted to go from the warmth of their homes to a quick shopping trip in style without sacrificing comfort. Hence the rapid growth in trendy loungewear. We saw the trend move into summer and it remains a key wardrobe element this winter. Matching (co-ord) sets are wardrobe essentials this season. Worn with chunky boots or sexy heels, the basic loungewear set can go from trendy casual during the day to an edgy look for a night with the girls. The over-sized teddy coat and shacket jacket are the hottest trend in cover ups. Grab one of these, slip it over your matching sets and you’re good to go! As we step out this winter, lets continue to do so safely. Keep all the sanitizing essentials in the latest must-have carry-all bag and learn to embrace the face mask. It still remains to be the most essential accessory. Keep warm and stay safe.

Get your skin glowing

THOBILE MAZIBUKO WINTER is not friendly to the skin. It tends to leave it dry and flaky, which is why when seasons change, one must adjust his or her skincare routine. It's not necessary to change the entire routine. A few tweaks here and there will help you maintain the glow. All you have to do is use products that cater to your skin’s needs. Your skin needs the same thing throughout the seasons – ingredients like hyaluronic acid to boost the water content in your skin cells significantly and highquality moisturising ingredients such as rosehip oil that prevent that hydration from evaporating through your skin. Skin experts at Claire Hill added that layering is vital. What this essentially means is that you have to apply your products in a particular order. For example, after washing your face, apply a toner, followed by a serum and then a moisturiser. The moisturiser locks in the benefits of the serum and prevents the dry winter air from sucking the much-needed hydration straight back out of your skin. Don’t forget the sunscreen, too. As mentioned, you can still use the same products you were using in the summer, like cleansers. It is also best to use a pad soaked in micellar water – it will gently remove the daily grime without stripping the skin of its natural oils. You'll also be able to give the skin a good boost of soothing, repairing antioxidants. Invest in an eye gel because the skin around the eyes is thinner than on the rest of your face, making it prone to dryness. To prevent dry skin, drink plenty of water and nourish your skin with the same gentle but effective products yearround.

Haircare

tips

THOBILE MAZIBUKO WINTER is fast approaching and while we’ll be changing our skincare regime, we shouldn’t forget about our hair, too. Hair can be fragile, especially during harsh winter weather, which is why you should wear protective hairstyles and use the right products. WASH BI-WEEKLY Depending on your hair type, it’s advisable to wash your hair weekly or twice a month. This is to ensure that you don’t strip away all the nutrients that your hair needs. Use non-sulphate shampoos and conditioner like the MPL Charcoal range. It’s suitable for all hair types and is paraben-free. KEEP IT INTACT It’s okay to let your hair loose for a few days but don’t leave it for too long, especially if you have an Afro, because shrinkage exists. Do some twists or braids to keep it in place. MOISTURISE Like the skin, hair needs daily moisture or it will get super dry. Spray it with a bit of water, and then seal it with a moisturiser or essential oils. EasyWaves recently launched an Alma Oil range. It helps deepcondition the hair and scalp while nourishing dry hair. COVER IT When going to bed, cover your hair with a satin bonnet or a cotton T-shirt. This will prevent the oils from staining your pillows. WEAR PROTECTIVE STYLES A wig can be a useful protective style to wear in winter because it may help with hair growth and will keep your head warm. CUT LOOSE ENDS Get into the habit of trimming your hair by cutting loose ends. It will help maintain healthy growth while giving your hair a better shape. Enjoy every step of your hair journey and play around with styles that make you feel like the queen or king that you are

GERRY CUPIDO WHILE we continue to spend time indoors, we are cautiously, venturing out more. In 2020, we stayed home and lived in our PJs, which has now evolved into lounge wear because, come on, just because we’re stuck indoors we still need to do it in style! The winter chill does however tend to keep us home anyway. Therefore comfy lounge wear continues to be a hot fashion trend. Slip on a funky pair sneakers or sexy heels and you’re good to go out shopping or lunch with the girls. Teddy coats. What’s not to love about them. They are so warm, soft and fluffy, which is why it’s understandable that one would want to wrap yourself in it for that snug and cosy feeling. Throw one of these trendy oversize coats or jackets over a casual outfit for an instant, on trend, upgrade. Even though tan tends to be a safe colour, off-white is a great option to elevate the look. Velour items are still having a moment and the trusty poloneck continues to be on the rise this winter.

It’s in the bag

The big bag is back. A carry-all bag is a must-have this winter. Gone are the tiny bags. The pandemic has forced us to carry so much more in our bags. You will need the extra space for those extra masks and bottles of hand sanitizers.

Statement sunglasses

Yes of course you can wear your sunnies in winter. Sunglasses might be small but they can have a great impact on an outfit. What better way to hide those tired eyes! This winter the square shape is making a huge comeback. In transparrnet acetates and tinted lenses, they go with pretty much everything. Narrow 90’s inspired rectangular-shaped shades are a go-to, easy wearing, style to rock on any day.

The silk scarf

One hottest trends is the simple silk scarf. For bad hair days, opt for a printed headscarf. Worn over the ears and knotted under your chin as your channel your inner Audrey Hepburn. Simple and chic! Use a long scarf to tie a simple yet elegant bow.

Bold tights

There are days when a girl just wants to wear a flirty feminine skirt. Who wants to wear pants everyday! Instead of sticking to those boring black winter tights, change things up with a pair of bold colour, printed or textured tights instead. Worn with a pair of pair chunky laceup boots, your look will be bang on trend.

Naomi Noinyane (@KNaomi)

n o i h s a f a t s n I THOBILE MAZIBUKO WINTER is upon us and this season's trends include loungewear, activewear and, of course, sleepwear. Our favourite Instagram stars have already set the tone on pairing your favourite comfortable clothes most stylishly. For your winter fashion style inspiration, these are the local Insta stars to choose from.

Ntando Duma (@dumantado)

Shorts aren’t reserved for spring/summer. They are very much on trend this season. Just like Duma, you can also rock yours with styling boots and a cool puffer jacket.

Karabo Makwaba (@karabo_makwaba)

The makeup artist and founder of Blink BossSA has a simple way of styling sweatpants. She usually wears them with a cropped top or fashionable bra. She sticks to one colour, and our favourite look is the all-white that she paired with black and red Nike Jordan 1 to add a bit of colour.

Junette Syster (@junetteva01)

The model is super creative when it comes to styling activewear, and she makes it look so easy. She would wear tights and a sports bra and pair it with block heels and a leather biker’s jacket, and then, voila, she’s ready for an outing with friends.

Nqobile Khwezi (@nqobilekhwezi)

She likes to show legs and does it so well. Although the temperatures have dropped, Khwezi still wears short dresses/pants, but she pairs them with knee-length boots and a stylish coat.

Sinethemba Duma (@Cne_shuga)

The fashion and food content creator showed us how to rock cosy loungewear in two different ways. To dress up, she wore the nude cropped cosy loungewear from Mr Price with a check blazer and strappy sandals. To dress it down, she wore the twopiece with comfortable slides.

Sithelo Shozi (@_sithelo)

She has a unique way of styling loungewear. If it’s not luxe, she wears it as street style, making it look like she’s ready for fashion week.

GERRY CUPIDO IT’S no surprise that this winter beauty trends focus mostly on the eyes. Wearing a mask is mandotory and has become a set part of daily attire. Whether you’re shopping, having lunch or attending a black-tie affair, most of your face will be covered with a mask. The eyes have become the canvas for creativity. Bold colours and graphic eyeliner shapes are all the rage this winter. Now’s the time to take a walk on the wild side and dare to be different by trying eye colour shades you might never have considered before. Shimmering metallics, from earthy coppers and golds to vibrant greens or purples, are amplified with a dab of gloss for super shine effect. The floating eyeliner trend is a creative and edgy use of your everyday eyeliner. Have fun with this look. Try different colours. Brights to pastels or mix them up, there’s no wrong way of doing it. It’s all in the shape. It’s official. Smudged, “yesterday’s eyeliner” look is an actual trend! You know that look you wake up to after heavy night out? That rubbed off mascara and messy smudged black liner look. Keep that in mind when creating this hot off the runways look. A soft, malleable kohl eye pencil is ideal to achieve those perfect smudges. Regardless what makeup look you go for, glowing skin will always be the greatest canvas. Dare to go barefaced! Healthy glowing skin, bushy brows and rosy cheeks is the perfect winter look.
