MY heart was pierced by the passing of His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu. The relationship I had with my nephew, the king, endured for the full 72 years of his life. There are just too many memories to speak of. It pains me to think of this loss to the Zulu Nation. I still remember the passing of the king’s grandfather, King Solomon Maphumzana kaDinuzulu. I can never forget the wave of voices that crashed over KwaDlamahlahla Palace in the wailing of thousands of mourners. For days they arrived, weeping and lamenting. When King Cyprian Bhekuzulu Nyangayezizwe kaSolomon ascended to the throne, and appointed me as traditional prime minister to the Zulu monarch and nation, I thought I would serve my cousin for decades. Yet on 17 September 1968, we received news that the king had died. Again, there was an outpouring of grief. Never in my wildest imaginings could I anticipate living through this again. The loss of another king within my lifetime seemed impossible. When I stood at the coronation of King Cyprian’s son in December 1971, I prayed for longevity for our king, knowing that our people would benefit from a long reign. I thank God for answering my prayers. King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu became our nation’s longest reigning monarch. For almost 50 years he lived and breathed to serve his people. I consider it an unparalleled privilege to have served him for all those years. We have lost a monarch who reigned over 12 million people, and who commanded such respect that kings and presidents from around the world have mourned his passing. His reign was characterised by wisdom, compassion and courage. When he spoke, we knew that he had the interests of our nation at heart. He urged us to protect ourselves by going back to the land, and he led by example. When he told us to plough our fields, he also ploughed his fields. When he told us to grow food, he was growing food. This gives the measure of his integrity. His Majesty was a champion of social justice, the greatest advocate for education, and the finest philanthropist we could hope to have. I was present when the University of Zululand bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate in Philanthropy in recognition of his work to uplift his people. He worked with and through countless organisations. The Sivananda World Peace Foundation, the Bayede Foundation, the Victor Daitz Foundation, the Gandhi Development Trust, agricultural associations, conservation programmes, education trusts, HIV/Aids campaigns, cultural
preservation initiatives, work against gender-based violence, moral integrity movements and religious bodies. Wherever he saw value in the work being done, he generously supported it. One of the greatest testaments to his leadership was the decision to reinstate some of our traditional customs and ceremonies, including the Reed Dance Ceremony. He understood the importance of restoring the moral fibre of our nation, to protect both our health and culture. He urged us to return to precious values that are fast disappearing. Values like respect, discipline, responsibility, sacrifice and integrity. To the present generation these words may sound archaic. But our nation was built on the values of sacrifice, endurance and commitment. If we are to honour our king’s legacy and secure our nation’s survival, we have no choice but to invest again in these sound values. A changing world does not demand that we lose our identity. In fact, unless we become more conscious of our identity and fierce in preserving it, we may become lost. There are calls everywhere for change; for the course decided by others to be disrupted. That is what His Majesty our king achieved. He disrupted the course of HIV/Aids that was devastating our nation. He disrupted the instructions of the apartheid regime to comply with their every command. He disrupted the idea that democracy in the African context must exclude traditional leadership or the role of the monarchy. And he disrupted the path to poverty that would have been created if our communal land had been lost in 1994. Our king’s forebears waged war to preserve our identity and protect our land. Our ancestors paid in blood to see our kingdom recognised. After generations of conquest, colonialism and dispossession, the Zulu Nation was left with only pieces of land. It is this land that we protected through the Ingonyama Trust Act, ensuring that it could remain as communal land, administered under indigenous and customary law. His Majesty’s people retained the security of being able to access enough land to live on, to raise a family and produce food. Had we not placed this land under the Ingonyama Trust, it would automatically have been ceded to the state in April 1994. The communities of our kingdom would be living today on state-owned land, with no security of tenure. Instead, the families of our nation have land to live on, and land to farm. I cannot imagine a more fitting tribute to our king than to see his people return to self-help and selfreliance by cultivating the land. If we can see the hills and valleys of Zululand green again with crops and vegetables, we will have honoured his greatest wish.

Final salute to His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini ka Cyprian Bhekuzulu THE king among kings has departed. His light shall forever shine on the path to develop constitution-based democracy on the roots of indigenous knowledge and culture. Our country woke up to the news of the passing on of His Majesty, King Zwelithini ka Nyangayezizwe Cyprian ka Nkayishana Solomon ka Dinuzulu ka Cetswayo ka Mpande. The bowing out of iSilo Samabandla was announced by the Royal Family on 12 March 2021, leaving the multitudes of his subjects and all that had come to love and respect the king, in great sadness. His Majesty King Zwelithini ascended the throne at the young age of 23 in 1971 at a time when the people of our country resumed the project of open defiance of the colonial apartheid system. Almost a century had passed since the victory of the Zulu Royal Army over the British colonial forces at the Battle of Isandlwane on 22 January 1879. The Zulu Kingdom had to face the severest test in the wake of defeat by the British at the Battle of Ulundi on 4 July 1879. His Majesties King Cetshwayo and successor Dinuzulu suffered the wrath of British imperialism. South Africa was a different country after the British-sponsored Union of South Africa on 31 May 1910 was established. Black people came to be governed under institutions in which they had no direct representation. The indigenous people responded by establishing the South African National Native Congress (SANNC) uniting all Africans in South Africa and the then so-called British Protectorates of Basutoland (Lesotho), Bechuanaland (Botswana) and Swaziland. The kings of the various nations in the region were actively involved and represented in the founding of the Congress on 8 January 1912, in Mangaung. They rallied behind the call for unity across language and ethnicity. The apartheid regime recognised His Majesty King Cyprian Bhekuzulu as the Paramount Chief of the Zulu people in 1951. This was the first time the imperialists acknowledged the king of the Zulu people since 1879. The move was a cynical pursuit of the old imperialist strategy of divide and rule, in its new form of so-called separate development, dividing the indigenous people on the basis of language and ethnicity. The indigenous people led by the African National Congress, as the SANCC had been renamed in 1923, resisted this policy at every turn. The reign of His Majesty the King came at the height of racist attempts to balkanise our country along racial and ethnic lines. On the other side the broad national liberation movement led by the ANC had begun the final push to end minority racist rule. The people became divided between those who were resisting apartheid in all its forms, on one side, and on the other, those who still
believed they could fight the racist system from within. History thus thrust the responsibility upon the shoulders of His Majesty to work with other leaders to promote peace among his subjects while championing the liberation of the people of South Africa. The unifying role and presence of His Majesty became ever more critical in the dying days of apartheid rule; and the early period of the now free and democratic Republic as revolutionary violence confronted state violence. His Majesty could bridge the rift between his uncle Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who, in his role as the leader of the Inkatha YeNkululeko Yesizwe, was then pitted against the Congressoriented United Democratic Front (UDF) and other formations of the liberation movement. A conducive climate was created in which the leadership of the ANC headed by Isithwalande Nelson Mandela and Inkatha President Prince M G Buthelezi could find common ground in the long and difficult journey to peace in Natal and the Vaal Triangle. Further loss of lives and destruction of property could be ended. Prince Buthelezi was a member of the ANC before it was banned in 1960. The ANC effectively deployed him to enter the so-called Bantu tribal authorities and collapse the system from within. The role always had a hidden contradiction. On the one hand it could promote united resistance against apartheid among the traditional communities in Natal. On the other hand it could solidify ethnic separation and exclusivity. This contradiction became a factor in the tragic manipulation of the liberation struggle in Natal and the Vaal Triangle, first into narrow Zulu nationalism, and second into so-called black-on-black violence. His Majesty had an important calming effect among his subjects and between them and other nationalities across the political divide. He continued to play his role as unifier and peace-builder in the context of the free and democratic South Africa where the priority is socio-economic transformation and development. He joined hands with the provincial government and supported its programmes. He played an excellent role as custodian of indigenous culture and customs nationally and beyond our borders. He has played the roles of statesman and international diplomat. We dedicate ourselves to honour his memory by sparing no effort to realise the total emancipation of all the people and building peace and prosperity in South Africa, Africa, and beyond. Indeed as South Africans we should look through petty political differences and one-upmanship; to win the prize of real national self-determination and national sovereignty. “
INKATHA FREEDOM PARTY MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE
His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini ka Bhekuzulu, the King of the Zulu Nation, led his people with dignity, wisdom and compassion.
He was the longest serving monarch of the Zulu nation, having reigned for almost fifty years. He led his people through the dark era of apartheid and, after we achieved democracy, remained a champion of the ongoing struggle for full liberation from the bonds of social and economic injustice. His Majesty led by example as he called on the nation to return to subsistence farming, to produce food and invest in agriculture. He emphasised the importance of cultural values and preserved the traditions of the Zulu Nation. Under his leadership, every family in the Zulu Kingdom enjoyed the security of being able to access enough land on which to live and raise a family.
“

His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu – a symbol of reconciliation and peace ELA GANDHI
IN paying tribute to His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekuzulu, I want to firstly record our deepest condolences and solidarity with the Royal family, from the Gandhi Development Trust and Phoenix Settlement Trust and from the Gandhi family. It must be recognised that His Majesty’s life was filled with many challenges. Prior to being installed as King in 1971 after attaining the age of 23 and after his marriage to his first wife, Sibongile Winifred Dlamini or Ma Dlamini as she is referred to, he had to leave the province for a few years to seek shelter away from threats to his life. In the 50 years of his reign over KwaZulu-Natal he faced many challenges and criticisms. His status was often undermined. His life was often threatened. He has faced many criticisms and has had to struggle to gain recognition as king of the province and not just the Zulu nation. Amid these challenges his many attempts at reconciliation and peace in KZN have neither received wide publicity nor widespread support. It must be noted that while he has been recognised by many across the racial and ethnic divide for both his status and his work, he also faced bitter criticism by many who neither recognised his status nor respected his calls for reconciliation but when there were lapses he was harshly criticised. A monarchical system in the present world faces many challenges of legitimacy as so many other structures do. Like with religion a monarchical system is based on faith. An essential feature of reconciliation in our country and province is to try to understand the beliefs of each other and more particularly the traditional beliefs and customs of the majority of the people in our country. A challenge that His Majesty faced was the challenge of being accorded the recognition by all in a democratic South Africa and in KwaZulu-Natal. Recognition as a monarch and respect for the position does not mean that criticisms should not be levelled when a lapse is recognised. But such criticisms have to be tempered with respect for the position and balanced in its allegations of being the sole cause behind unrest, through a deeper investigation into causative factors. In fact, in some of the incidences deeper research revealed that while there might be misinterpretation of statements His majesty may have made, there were also deep-seated causes in the community for the unrest and violence. But be that as it may, my point simply is that we need to understand the traditional beliefs and accord respect for those beliefs in the same way that we expect our customs and beliefs to be recognised and accorded respect. From our own side as the
Gandhi Development Trust and the Phoenix Settlement Trust, we have observed His Majesty’s efforts towards reconciliation and peace in several gatherings where he has publicly called for peace and social cohesion. He has on numerous occasions recognised the importance of Mahatma Gandhi from the very early days of his assumption to the throne. He visited the Phoenix Settlement in October 1969 just after his nomination as king and before his installation. This was when he attended the centenary celebrations of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi and Kastur Gandhi. He has spoken at various public meetings of the significance of the scattering of the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi in the Indian Ocean on the shores of KwaZulu-Natal. He said that this created a bond between the two nations, Zulu and Indian. He also spoke of the values that Gandhiji brought to the province. He also addressed a number of other meetings where he spoke of social cohesion and the need to understand each other and live peacefully together. I quote here an extract from a speech he made on 27 February 2000 at a mass meeting at the Phoenix Settlement which was researched by my niece Professor Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie. “Phoenix Settlement was established as a symbol of resistance and was for decades a reminder of what could be achieved with courage and determination. The landmark must be recognised and valued as an important part of KwaZulu Natal’s heritage… and I call on all our people … to ensure that this settlement becomes a beacon of reconciliation and peace and a living monument to the man whose social and political ideals remain as relevant today as they did in 1904… “I extend to the Trust responsible for this remarkable project my congratulations and sincere appreciation for the work, which you have undertaken to restore to KwaZulu-Natal this monument of peace and unity… “It is my hope that Phoenix Settlement will stand and prosper in the century ahead and that it will come to symbolise our collective ability to emerge from a difficult past into a brighter and more enlightened future.” After 20 years, last year the Phoenix Settlement was given national heritage status. Application for World Heritage status is in the pipeline. We pay tribute to His Majesty King Zwelithini on this sad occasion of his passing. May his spirit rise and continue to bless this land. * Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, is a South African peace activist and was a Member of Parliament in South Africa from 1994 to 2004.

A torchbearer of hope, the king led from the front DR NKOSAZANA DLAMINI ZUMA, MINISTER OF COGTA
THE untimely passing of His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini Ka Bhekuzulu, Isilo Samabandla has definitely left us poorer as a nation and people, looking at the important role he played in beholding a new democratic South Africa. His Majesty King Zwelithini was the longest-serving monarch of the Zulu Kingdom, with a reign spanning over five decades following his crowning in 1971, following the passing of his father in 1968. During his reign, he was an example of diligence and persistence and he placed the development of his people first and that rare generosity, thoughtfulness and embracing of diversity have shaped many lives. He was indeed a giant, upon which many stood tall and his name will be engraved forever in hearts of those who he touched in many ways than one. He was a true leader whose good deeds and untiring endeavours unified the Zulu nation which he led through difficult times, including under the brutal hand of apartheid. As a true custodian of the Zulu culture, he took pride in his identity and heritage. He was not the one to shy away from challenges and he took a stand to protect the lives of people, calling for an end to political killings and thus contributing to bringing peace among communities. To ensure a peaceful South Africa, he travelled the whole country and engaged with all people, irrespective of their race, colour, creed or political belief. During the height of political violence in the country, he became a mediator, peacemaker and a voice of reason that preached peace. The king played a critical role in bringing about the new democratic dispensation we enjoy today. He wanted nothing, but to see a South Africa at peace and with a thriving democracy. His Majesty profiled the developmental role that the institution of traditional leadership has to play to ensure development of their areas of jurisdiction and ultimately the whole country. He became a voice of the voiceless, especially the poorest of the poor and also spoke about the role of the institution of traditional leadership in a democratic South Africa. The king flew a flag of royal traditional leadership both in South Africa and the African continent. In an effort to consolidate unity and nation-building, His Majesty pioneered a gathering of African kingships in Durban to discuss the global perspective on indigenous leadership seeking, among others, to facilitate cohesion and make a call for a united front to fight social ills and negative effects of conflict in our continent. The king was always available to support government initiatives on projects related to the promotion and preservation of customs and traditions in South African communities. On two occasions, His Majesty supported the government initiative to develop protocol guidelines for
the institution of traditional leadership aimed at keeping with a need to create harmonised relations between the institution of traditional leadership and all its stakeholders and to ensure effective and efficient governance and social cohesion in the country as well as contributing to the transformation of the institution, placing it in a position where it can effectively partner and work with other stakeholders. Ahead of the launch of the District Development Model (DDM) in eThekwini, he supported the efforts of the government to ensure service delivery in municipalities that would ensure communities were developed. Through the DDM, the aim was to improve coherence and impact of government service delivery with focus of 44 districts and eight metros as development spaces that are used as centres of service delivery and economic development, including job creation. As a torchbearer of hope, the King led from the front in the fight against HIV/Aids and TB. He encouraged responsible behaviour, mobilising people to stop the spread of HIV/Aids. He took a courageous stance on HIV/Aids prevention challenging the international community to avail more funding against the pandemic and the South African government to provide medication to the people. Although the initiation of young men is not part of the Zulu culture, having been stopped by King Shaka, he encouraged young Zulu men to go for circumcision as one of the HIV/ Aids initiatives. In some instances, he spoke against the prevailing socio-economic challenges that continued to besiege all communities. Since the District Development Model was launched, Isilo wanted to know the role that was to be played by the traditional leaders in the KwaZulu-Natal. He often called me to brief him on the developments of this programme. In the last meeting, he held with me, he indicated his availability to support the department whenever there are challenges in implementing the programme. As part of demonstrating patriotism, in December 2020, His Majesty signed a pledge to fight the scourge of gender-based violence, child abuse and human trafficking as the country observed 16 Days of Activism. For his sterling work and in recognition of the social impact of his work in changing the lives of the people, the University of Zululand conferred him with an honorary doctorate. Our hearts are with his family, his children, the Zulu nation and South Africa as a whole. Phumula ngokuthula Mdlokombane kaNdaba! Hlanga Lomhlabathi! Ngangezwe lakhe! Silo samaBandla onke! Bhejane phum’esiqiwini kade bekuvalele! Bayede! Indeed, the shield of the Zulu Nation is smashed (Isihlangu sikaZulu siphukile).

MAY KING ZWELITHINI’S SPIRIT OF UBUNTU PERSEVERE
BY NIGEL WARD, PRESIDENT OF THE DURBAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY NPC
UHLANGA lomhlabathi, a peacemaker who always availed himself, gave guidance to his people and promoted unity. Ubhejane phuma esqiwini the teacher and custodian of heritage and culture, he taught his people to embrace cultural practices with utmost pride. His Majesty a tourism ambassador, it is through cultural events such as Umkhosi Womhlanga and Umkhosi Wokweshwama where you would see numbers of local and international visitors flock into KwaZulu-Natal. Not only would visitors be exposed to the Zulu culture and heritage, these events created jobs and businesses opportunities for locals through visitor numbers. In unveiling the former late president’s statue in Mitchell Park, King Zwelithini said it is a symbol of social cohesion, especially between Africans and Indians in eThekwini. “The relationship between the Zulu nation and people of Indian descent has developed certain negative stereotypes. We need to get to know each other’s habits, cultures and traditions and stop being ignorant,” said King Zwelithini. He was adamant at not letting his people forget their history and believed that through historical sites, South Africa would be able to tell its own stories and educate people about its rich heritage. His Majesty encouraged his subjects into entrepreneurship which is consistent with the Durban Chamber’s strategic goal of economic growth and job creation. Imbube promoted economic growth and unlocked new investment opportunities through his good relations with other kingdoms, governments, and leaders from all spheres all over the world. The businesses community has had a healthy and positive relationship with the king. His credible leadership positioned KZN as a favourable investment destination. King Goodwill Zwelithini
presided over Ingonyama Trust. It is through the trust where agriculture development was identified. He played an integral part in poverty alleviation through agriculture. He and other leaders made land available for farming and wanted the government to create access to markets for SMMEs. He was an advocate for small business development and wanted small-scale farmers to be assisted in opportunities to export to international markets. Through the Ingonyama Trust he championed economic growth and made land available for development in the rural areas for the benefit of the people. The passing of the king came at a challenging time where His Majesty’s wisdom would have empowered our society to win the battle we are currently facing. The vulnerable in our communities face times of intense difficulty. It is critical for organised business to uplift poor communities by strengthening ties with various economic sectors through socioeconomic relief measures. We believe it is important that KwaZuluNatal comes together in assisting poor communities and preserving livelihoods. As we try and move forward without His Majesty, organised business believes the interaction with social partners including traditional leaders is critical and must be mutually beneficial for it to be profitable. Frequent consultation on key matters will lead to sustainable solutions. Engagement that is participative, facilitative and accountable is critical to promoting a healthy relationship with stakeholders. A recent article cited the king as having been a king for everyone and not only the Zulu nation. We believe the legacy of equality will resonate in the hearts of many business leaders. The Durban Chamber will remember strides the king took in ensuring that business, government and community work together to build social cohesion. May the spirit of Ubuntu persevere. Bayede! Wena Wendlovu!
